Ok so the first part of this is probably really obvious, but having spent over an hour on the second part of my problem I give up. So, when you are viewing photos, via home share form my  main mac, onto my apple tv, what does to mean when there is no photo, but a black box with a question mark within. Believe me I have searched these forums!
But this was all because of the main issue, which is "embarrassing" photos I have deleted from EVERY device I own, still show up in the albums on apple tv. So, in the light of recent events with photos popping up everywhere, if they're not deleted where ELSE can they be! Anyway. again I have searched these forums and this subject does pop up from time to time but Ive never seen a definitive solution! Help! Driving me crazy!

    I just want to add to this, in case someone else searches for this error on Apple Support (google doesnt cover apple support.. how clever is that?)
    I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
    I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
    Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
    So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
    It was Ram for me..

    I just found an Apple article dedicated to that called "Gray screen on startup."
    Symptoms
    Instead of seeing the Finder or the login window after startup, your computer may stop responding and the display may only show a persistent gray screen (you may also see an Apple logo, spinning gear, spinning globe, prohibitory sign, or a folder with a flashing question mark on it). Note: The below steps may not apply if a blue screen appears during start up.
    Products Affected
    Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.6, Mac OS X 10.5
    Resolution
    Note: Some steps below may reset preference settings or registration settings.
    Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
    Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
    Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
    Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
    Start up your Mac.
    If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Make sure the device is powered if it needs to be to operate correctly. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
    Note: If you have multiple peripheral devices and the issue only occurs when they are all connected, but not when each device is the only peripheral connected, see the Additional Information section below.
    If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
    If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
    Perform a Safe Boot
    Simply performing the Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
    Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
    Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
    Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
    If your Mac starts up as expected, immediately try restarting.
    If the Safe Boot does not work, or the restart after a successful Safe Boot does not work, go to the next section.
    Reset the NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
    Reset the NVRAM / PRAM.
    If the gray screen issue persists, go to the next section.
    Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility
    Insert your Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 installation disc (if you have discs with both versions, use whichever is closest to the Mac OS X version installed on your Mac; do not use a startup disc which came with a different Mac or which contains an earlier version of Mac OS X).
    Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
    Start up your Mac while holding the C key to start from the disc.
    Once started from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Utility menu.
    Note: If the gray screen issue persists and you can't start from the disc, go to the "Disconnect peripheral devices" section.
    In Disk Utility, perform a disk repair of your Mac OS X volume; if no issues are found, perform a permissions repair as well. If issues are found during the disk repair, try repairing again.
    After the Disk Utility operations are complete, restart without holding any keys.
    If the gray screen issue persists, go to the next section.
    Check your cables and power source
    Make sure your power cables are secure (especially if you use a desktop Mac). Try a different cable or outlet if possible. If you use a surge protecter, try connecting directly to an outlet as a test.
    If you have power-related issues (such as your desktop Mac shutting down or restarting, or room lights dimming when an appliance comes on, consider contacting a certified electrician to check your outlets and electrical wiring).
    If the gray screen issue persists, go to the next section.
    Remove third-party RAM and internal hardware
    Note: Skip this section if only Apple-brand RAM is installed in your Mac.
    Remove any non-Apple RAM or other third-party hardware upgrades (such as expansion cards or third-party optical drives or hard drives, if present) to help isolate the issue. This is necessary to get as close as possible to the original factory hardware configuration of your Mac.
    If you are not sure which RAM modules or other hardware is Apple or third-party, or if you are not comfortable performing these steps, or if you have a Mac mini, consider contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance. Otherwise, perform these steps before going to the next section.
    Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
    Open your Mac to access the memory slots. Refer to the User Guide that came with your Mac, or search Apple Support Manuals for a PDF copy of your Mac's User Guide.
    Remove any third-party RAM that has been installed.
    Reinstall the Apple RAM that came with the computer if available. Note that Mac OS X 10.5 requires 512 MB or more of RAM; Mac OS X 10.4 requires 256 MB or more of RAM.
    If your Mac starts up with only Apple RAM installed, contact the vendor of your third-party RAM.
    If the gray screen issue persists, go to the next section.
    Perform an Archive and Install installation of Mac OS X
    If the above steps do not resolve the issue, and you can successfully start from your Mac OS X Install disc as noted above:

    After installation, if the gray screen issue persists, go to the next section.
    Perform an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X as a last resort
    Important: You should only perform this step after trying all of the above steps. This process will erase all files from your Mac OS X volume. If possible, back up important files first, or use Time Machine. You may be able to connect your Mac to another Mac with a FireWire cable and FireWire target disk mode, in order to try to manually back up files. Alternatively, you may wish to make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.
    To erase your Mac OS X volume and reinstall Mac OS X:
    Insert your Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 installation disc.
    Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
    Startup your Mac while holding the C key to start from the disc.
    Perform an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X.
    After installing, starting from your Mac OS X volume, and verifying the issue is resolved, you should use Software Update to update to the latest available version of Mac OS X.
    Additional Information
    If the issue persists after you follow the above steps, you may wish to make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.
    If the issue only occurs when multiple peripheral devices are connected
    If a gray screen appears during start up only when several peripheral devices (that is, USB and/or FireWire devices) are connected, and you don't want to have only one device connected at a time, the issue may be caused by a combination of the peripheral devices.
    To illustrate this hypothetically, you may have three USB devices, which we'll call "A", "B", and "C". The issue may be that peripherals A and C have a conflict of some sort, and a gray screen only appears if they both are connected, but not if each one is connected separately. In the above "Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables" section you may have inferred that you have an issue only with device C because it was added after A. To avoid an inaccurate analysis, connect device C to your computer with no other devices. If your Mac has the startup issue with only device C connected, then you know it is the source of the issue. However if your Mac starts up, you have a conflict of devices to work out. To do this add the other devices one at a time with device C connected until your startup issue occurs (restart after adding one device). Repeat this process until you have just the minimum set of devices to produce your startup issue.
    What can you do?
    You should make sure each device has the latest firmware installed if applicable--check with the manufacturer for more information. You should also check for the latest driver versions, and if necessary install them while started in Safe Mode per above.
    If any of the devices requires a separate power source, be sure that power is connected to the device (for example, even if a device appears to be powered when connected via USB without the power cable, connect its power cable).
    Try different USB or FireWire cables with each device, as applicable.
    If you have a device similar to one of the conflicting devices, try replacing it with another one.
    Contact each device manufacturer or the materials that came with the device. for more support information or, if needed, service options.

    Other than put disc in you don't give much info about what you've done. With the install disc inserted restart your Mac while holding the C key, that should start it up from the install disc. Should also work fine with a wireless Apple keyboard.

    That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
    Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    When it does start up, you'llsee a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
    If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
    If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

    You can't delete an account, all you can do is remove any personal info from in and stop using it - but anything that you downloaded from the stores with it will remain tied to that account.
    If you don't know the password for it then try this page to get it reset : http://iforgot.apple.com
    If you also don't know your security answers, then if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then steps 1 to 5 on the page that you posted from should let you reset them : go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account, then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
    If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you won't get the reset option - you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

    This indicates the device is in recovery mode.
    Connect it to a computer running iTunes and restore it.

    Hey all,
    I've been having this problem where buttons (Start Slideshow, Email Me, and Made on a Mac) show up as Question Marks on one of my Photo pages (titled "New Photos)

    In the past I've been able to make a small change to the page and re-publish which corrects the problem. But this one is stubborn. Any advice?
    Note that I have already tried the "Publish all to .Mac" and that didn't help. And I do Empty my Cache in Safari after Publishing. Also, the problem only occurs on this particular photo page, the others in the site are just fine. So I recreated the page from scratch and re-published, but that still didn't help. Not sure what to try next. Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I see what you mean. The images for the buttons are not located by the page but they still work. Are these special image files you're using or the ones that come with the theme?
    You might try creating a new photo page, select all of the photos from the old page and past into the placeholder on the new one. Do the same for the text, copy it from the old and past into the text box from the new. Then publish to a folder on the desktop and see if the buttons are correct. If so , delete the old page, rename the new one to the old name and publish.

  • So i have a 2011 MacBook Pro and when i turned it on this morning a flashing folder came on with a question mark in the middle of it and it keeps flashing. So i tried googling any solutions and up so far nothing has worked. Please Help ?

    I tried googling several solutions, but so far nothing seems to work. Everytime i start up my laptop i press CMND+R to make it go to the repair disk utility but instead it takes me as if i have to install lion when i had Snow Leopard 10.6.8. When i do go to the repair disk utility, on the eft hand side shows two hardrives one is Untitled and another is Hitachi, i tried downloading snow leopard 10.6.8 onto a Re-writable disc  using my windows computer. When i insterted it onto the disc drive it came out under SUPER DRIVE and everytime i double click on the CD it says something about attaching images/ I also forgot to mention that the MAC OSX 10.6.8 Update shows on the left hand side on the bottom in DMG format. I dont know what else to do, please help?

    This is the firmware telling you it can't find a bootable OS X volume.
    Usually to solve this all you do is hold the option key down on the built in keyboard while booting the computer, this enters Startup Manager and then you choose OS X to boot, then in System Preferences > Startup Disk you change it to the boot volume and it tells the firmware.

    What you have is a 10.7 or 10.8 Recovery HD from when 10.7 or 10. was on the machine previously.
    The Macintosh HD partition only was erased and 10.6 installed on it, without erasing the entire drive like what should have occured to remove the Recovery HD partition.
    So you have a mucked up machine.
    i tried downloading snow leopard 10.6.8 onto a Re-writable disc  using my windows computer.
    Well there goes your problem there, your downloading illegal copies of Snow Leopard from a untrusted location.
    10.6 is not available for download, except from pirate sites. You likely have malware or a compromised system.
    I dont know what else to do, please help?
    What you need to do is call Apple via phone, tell them the make of your machine and order the appropriate 10.6 disks, they are inexpensive now. Some machines that came with 10.6.3+ origianlly need machine specific disks, other wise pre-10.6.3 Intel Macs can use the 10.6.3 white retail disks.
    Once you have the disks, you need to backup your personal information off the computer to a external storage drive using the emergency quick copy method, then disconnect it to prevent mistakes.
    Most commonly used backup methods
    Next follow this proceedure and make sure to select the ENTIRE drive on the far left with the drive makers name and size, this will erase the entire drive, then install 10.6 from the disk
    How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
    When finished setup the machine and log onto the Internet and use Software Update to get current on 10.6.8
    Don't use pirated software, it's likely been compromised in some fashion.

    I think that your Mac detects your hard disk, but the problem is that your new hard disk doesn't contain any operating system, so your Mac doesn't find any bootable partition and you see a question mark.
    If your Mac came with DVDs, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, just install Mac OS X. If the hard disk isn't prepared to install Mac OS X, you will have to erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html

    All of my photos have white question marks in blue boxes when I publish my site to my FTP server. I've read where this is caused by pictures not being linked properly, but I have re-linked and have left the location of the photo file unchanged, to no avail. I've contacted Yahoo (my provider), also to no avail. I have not fully published my site to my domain yet due to this, but this is the URL of my temp domain:

    The files haven't been uploaded. Take a look at the Activity for your home page, Option-Command-A, to see the URLs of the missing files.
    Look HERE to see the directory and note that the files aren't there.
    How are you uploading the files - iWeb FTP, an FTP app or Yahoo file manager?
    Good luck with getting help from Yahoo - their tech support is the bottom of the barrel.

    I installed leopard on my girlfriend's intel white macbook yesterday. i did all the updates, except I didn't perform the keyboard firmware thing (i did donwload it, but after rebooting when it asked me to connect the computer to a power source, i simply quit it cause I had to leave the house in a hurry). I remember that I also deleted the previous system folder, which I believe its okay since all the apps were on the new applications folder, so I assume the folder I deleted refers to the old Tiger system.
    She just called me now saying that her computer won't boot and a question mark appears flashing and won't go past that point.

    I told her to put the installation DVD on the drive and press C, which she did. I then asked her to go to disk utility to perform a disk repair. guess what ? hard disk ain't there. I've experienced problems in which the disk was not found and turned out that the disk wasn't dead at all so I'm not assuming right away that the disk is gone for good.
    im not home right now so I won't be able to help her till I get there, but I'd like to know your opinion on this. Thanx a lot !

    so, i have the faulty computer with me. Tried booting from DVD, the hard drive is definitely not recognized. ive tried using pressing D on startup to access the apple hardware test thing to no avail. My last option would be trying the Disk Warrior and/or TechToolPro and probably taking off the hard drive and putting it back again. maybe it's not well attached, although I don't see how it could come off like that, the computer has fallen (!!) twice (!!!!!) during its 2 year life and apparently didn't affect anything, nor even on the outside of the computer. maybe these are the side effects, i dunno...
    btw, i tried the firewire target mode thing and the disk didnt come up on the host computer's desktop.. i guess that says it all..
