Question mark on Quicktime logo

Just updated my Quicktime and everytime I try to go to something that requires Quicktime I get a logo with a broken corner or the Quicktime logo with a Question mark in the middle.
I have done everything I was supposed to, and it says it downloaded successfully, the logo is there but when I try to open anything I get the question mark.

I have had this problem too, and recently found a solution that worked for me over on this forum: http://sillydog.org/forum/index.php
(found by scouring google results for "quicktime question mark windows xp")
(also, I had already changed QT's MIME settings so that it wasn't handling Flash swf movies -- it didn't help)
the solution goes as follows:
copy this file >C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll
to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins
That did it for me.
Hope that helps.
This worked for me.
Now I can watch trailers on the Apple site again.
the flash plugin you'll be moving is version 8.0 r22, which replaced my newly installed version 9.0 r16. I have no idea why this worked... Anyone have any input on that?

  • Question mark over Quicktime logo in Safari - MacBook

    Hi,
I have a black macbook on which FCP studio is installed and therefore QT Pro.
While browsing in Safari, (Latest 10.4.7 and Safari updates) and trying to access a link which plays streaming Qt's or just plain ones, I receive a Question mark over the Quicktime logo in place of the movie.
When right clicking the link and saving target, it downloads the movie and opens it in quicktime ok.
What the **** is going on.
On my G5 no problems to access these exact same links...
    Pretty annoying I would say
    ThanX

Yeah, this is very common right now. Problem is not with Quicktime, but with the Shockwave plug-in in Safari. it is not yet native to intel-based Macs so it will not activate properly as is.
Unfortunately, there is nothing yet to update to, so you can either live with it as is or run Safari in Rosetta mode which will slow it down slightly, but give you all the web content properly.
    Try this:
    Quit Safari
Go to the Safari icon in Applications
    Ctrl-click the icon
    Go to "Get Info"
Click the box next to "Open using Rosetta"
    Open Safari
This will solve the problem until an Intel-compliant Shockwave plug-in comes out.

  • White question mark inside quicktime logo

I used to be able to open a video attachment in email by clicking on it. Now when I do that I get "loading" and nothing happens.
Then I get the quicktime logo with a white question mark in the middle.  If I download the video I cn see it, but if I try to see it
from the email I have to down load again - putting another copy in download. Can I fix this?

None of the videos at that site worked for me. Looking through the page code I couldn't find a URL for the QuickTime files.
Only the page author can fix it.
    src="http://chnmstreaming.gmu.edu/historicalthinking/Scopes_Stream.mov"
QTKirk, source code appears to be pre-cached by previous web page before jumping to this page. In any case, the streaming server appears to be down or at least off-line when you try to access the video stream directly which probably explains both the displayed question mark and the "now you see it—now you don't" nature of access mentioned by the OP here.

  • Question mark over Quicktime logo on some trailers

    Hello there
Some time ago i have an issue with QT 7.0.4. The issue was about a conflict with java when i try to run java app, so someone on this foro reply me to downgrade to 7.0.3 and give me a link to an installer to do that.
The installer working great and the java app too, but when i try to see the movie trailers, some of them appear with a question mark over the QT logo and can't see the trailers.
Right now i have 7.0.3 because i don't want the issue back.
Anyone may suggest something, please ???

Ok, here some of the trailers:

    http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/thesentinel/trailer_small.html

But i want to give credits to QT, because only some of trailers (like all this) have the problem, not all of them.

  • Flashing Question Mark & Sad Apple Logo

I had my Mac for quite some time and everything seem to be going well until yesterday, when I pressed the power key all it showed was a white screen and the apple logo, I had called Tech and they said i was out of warrenty, but informed me that it would best to load the Mac OS X cd when I loaded and reached the select a destination part I saw my hard drive with an explanation point. she stated this was bad and that i would need to compeltely whipe the hard drive which didnt bother me. I went to Disk Utilities and chose my hards drive clicked options and choose to zero all data, also clicked download OS 9 drives. After waiting for about an hr it was completed, and i gave it a volume and went on with the installation i choose the volume and all seemed well. yet, after the computer rebooted and all i saw was a Flashing Question Mark & Sad Apple Logo. not quite sure what this means but checked other threads and followed some of the advised given to repair this, yet for me it doesn't work, as of now i tried erasing all data again but now it seems i can't set a volume. Not 100% percent sure which OS cd i have i will double check and reply later, I have a powerbook G4. any help would be great.
      Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi Richard,
I was hoping you'd respond Thanks to the link to S.M.A.R.T reporter, but things have deteriorated since my last post and now it won't boot up at all.
I hit the power button, hear the start-up chime, then nothing but eerie silence and a gray screen.
The lack of noise usually created by a HD spinning up should be obvious that this is indeed a hard drive issue, but I want to make sure I can sound intelligent when throw myself at the guy who replaced the drive.
I tried booting from a 10.3 install cd (holding down 'c' at startup) to run Disc Utility but it won't even do that. I can hear the cd-rom spinning, reading the disc, but after a while it just gives up. In fact, I think if I listen hard enough, I can hear the faintest sound of mocking laughter....
Is this painfully, obviously, a hard drive gone bad?
It's not the end of the world, just very aggravating.

  • Why am I getting a blue box with question mark instead of logo image?  It happens in my signature (in gmail) and in mailchimp (again, only with the logo).

Why am I getting a blue box with question mark instead of logo image?  It happens in my signature (in gmail) and in mailchimp (again, only with the logo).

The question mark in the box, if it looks like this:   means that safari cannot find the linked image.  On windows machines, this would be the equivilant of  the small "page-with-a-red-X" logo that appears in the same scenario.  Check the reference to the image and make sure that the image is in the correct location, and is accessable by the reference.

  • Question mark on quicktime videos and links

Question mark on quicktime videos and links. Anyone have a clue about this one

That video presentation is great for Mac OS, but not
XP. Doesn`t happen on all sites, so is the problem my
    end or the other?
    What is exactly your problem?
If you see a question when you visit a site where a QuickTime movie is embedded, there are possibilities. One is that there is a link made to the QuickTime, and QuickTime cannot access it. The second possibility which most people have is that you don't have an appropriate decoder for the QuickTime video. I only responded to the first case. And the second case is discussed several times a day.

I suggest you get 9.2.  You need to install the same or later version of the OS.  One some computer the shipped version has extra drivers.  The drivers will not be in the official release in this case 9.1.  They would be in 9.2.
Mac OS 9.1 (Mac OS ROM 7.5.1) and Mac OS X 10.0.4 (4P13)
    *blinking question mark*
The blinking question mark means that your mac firmware could not find a valid operating system

Try holding down the option key then power on.  This brings up the startup manager.  Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down command+option+o+f
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."
You can download the Mac OS 9 updates from the Apple site.

hello i ma having this same problem...
at first i would just restart, then it got more often, finally it would not load at all...
i have backup copy of my hd on a partition and it works ok there, at least it loads...
i tried disk repair and it indicated "unable to repair volume"...
i just went through this on another hard drive that i finally had to just replace...
it seems that quick time is actully destroying another hard disk...
it was so bad on my other hard drive that i would re copy the startup disk from dvd...
then it would crash after awhile saying b-tree needing repair...
this is my delema, i have an older copy of os X 10.4, then to upgrade to quicktime pro i would up grade os x to 10.4.11 the most current...
now when the os crashes it seems that i dont have the right disk utility to repair any of the damage...
do i need a 10.4.11 dvd to repair my hd?
is there a patch or upgrade to my disk utility that can repair my hd...
    i have a powerbook g4 867 with 1 gig ram,40 gig hd...

  • Macbook Startup? ***! I get Question Mark before Apple logo then log in.

  • Dashboard shows question mark for quicktime

when i try viewing trailers in the movie widget, dashboard now displays a ? (question mark) over the quicktime icon.   latest quicktime,
snow leopard 10.6.8....any suggestions?   thanks a bunch

That does sound odd. But if it just started happening today, or within the past few days, some sort of file corruption could be the cause. If you want to test that, try this:
    1. Quit everything, except the Finder.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Preferences and remove (don't delete) the com.apple.Dashboard.plist file to the Desktop.
    3. Log out and log back in to your account and see if the problem continues. If not, and everything else is behaving normally, then the preferences file was corrupted, so you can delete the one on your Desktop.
    Post back with results.

  • Flashing Question Mark Folder/Apple Logo/Circle w/ line through it

I was restarting my Macbook and got the flashing sequence of a Folder w/ Question Mark in it, the Apple Logo, and the Circle w/ diagonal line though it.
I have disconnected all my peripherals
I have tried starting up holding shift = does the same thing
I have tried starting holding Alt = it shows my Mac HD and an arrow under it to allow you to select it. I select it and it does the same thing.
I have my wife's Macbook here also with Snow Leopard on it. We have just moved, and I do not have my household goods yet, which is where my original startup disks are located.
Is there a way I can put the startup files I need onto an external from my wife's and try to start up from there?
Any help would be appreciated. All my important files I have backed up, so data loss isn't a huge concern, but there is plenty of software and personal settings on everything I would like to retain.

a quick google search for "create bootable OS X CD"
    yielded these:
    http://lowendmac.com/misc/05/0126.html
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/portableosx/
No experience with the products, so cannot say how well they work...

  • Safari 3.0.4: question mark and quicktime Q

I've looked through many posting here, but am not sure that any of them deal with this.
Since upgrading to 10.4.11/Safari 3.0.4 webpages often have the Quicktime Q with a superimposed question mark. Consequently, I can not see images/streaming videos, i.e, nyt site, etc.
can someone explain what is going on and how to fix it, or how to downgrade too the previous version of Safari, where all was well?
If I haven't explained the problem well enough, please let me know, so I can help you help me.
Calls to AppleCare have led me through staring up as a test user, where the same thing happened, as well as tossing various com.apple.? from the preferences folder. some fixes have worked for a day or so, but the troubles return. quitting safari and restarting does not usually help.
thanks for any thoughts and suggestions.
    adp

    Hi adp,
In the past, one of the common workarounds proposed for these symptoms is to quit Safari and move the 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' file out of the HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder. Try that and see if it helps. Hopefully someone will be able to come up with a more complete solution.
