Question mark on windows of folders and hard drives

I have noticed a question mark in the window of all folders and hard drives after installing Snow Leopard and still there after installing Lion. Is this something new or possibly a problem with my load?
Thanks

I failed to include the "traffic lights" in my screen shot, but all is there. When I click on question mark it says....

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • Blinking folder with question mark! Recovery mode not recognising hard drive!

So today on my MacBook Pro 13" mid 2010, for some reason a CD that I inserted inside the DVD/CD drive didn't come out, and was stuck inside. So I looked up on how to force eject it out, and I saw someone wrote that you can force eject the CD by putting a paper clip inside the hole next to the CD/DVD drive. I did this, and it did not work. After I turned on my MacBook Pro and on the startup I found the blinking folder with question mark! I went through Internet recovery mode, and I found out that it did not recognise my hard drive!
-Do I have to replace my hard drive?
Please help! I'm fairly new with computers :(

That was for very old Mac's and PC's, it's been a long time since any modern Mac had that ability.
CD that I inserted inside the DVD/CD drive didn't come out, and was stuck inside.
Press and hold the power button down to force a hardware shutdown.
Hold the trackbutton down and the option/alt key at the same time, now boot the machine.
The disk should spit out and you should eventually see a row of icons appear on the screen, this is Startup Manager and you can pres the eject key here also to get the cd to spit out.
If you see MacintoshHD (or your OS X boot volume) click it and the arrow underneath and when you get into OS X, head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and set it again. Your problem should be resolved at this point.
If you don't see your OS X boot volume and it shows RecoveryHD only, or holding the option/alt goes to Internet Recovery, then your boot drive is dead or there is some sort of other issue/power /Mac related.
Try a #1 SMC Reset and a #2 PRAM reset and see if that fixes things.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If not, I then suspect because you couldn't eject the cd that something electrical bad happened to the Superdrive and as a result it also effected the power or something going to the boot hard drive.
The hard drive might still work just fine if it's removed from the machine and a SATA to USB adpater to another Mac.
My advice is to take the machine to Apple for a free hardware evaluation, then decide what you want to do from there.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

  • Blinking Question mark after loading Leopard on replacement hard drive

I have a Mac mini powerpc and the seagate hard drive failed. I replaced it with a samsung, formated it as mac OS from the disk utility (from the cd), and loaded leopard from my store bought copy. The load takes about 2 hours and then when I turn on the mini without the cd in the drive, it gives the question mark blinking sign on a blue screen. I also tried to set the drive to be what needs to boot, but it only will show the Leopard CD so I can't select the drive as my boot drive. I've exhausted my searches and am stuck at this point.

I have verified it shows apple partition map. Also the drive was formatted as mac os extended (journaled)
It sounds like you made all the right choices. The only other suggestions I have for you fall in the category of grasping at straws:
    - Try it all over again (probably futile).
    - Hold down the "D" key while booting from the system discs that originally came with the computer (if you have them). If that puts you into the computer's diagnostics routines, run them on the disk.
    - Install from the original system discs (once again, if you have them).
    - Let a computer shop have a look at it.

  • MacBook Question Mark, or Dude, Where's My Hard Drive?

My white Macbook locked and was shut off by holding down the power button. Now it goes to the flashing question mark when I try to start. Booting from the install disk works, but when I use Startup Disk to get it back onto the HD, it does not show my HD! I do get a strange "Network" option, but that doesn't work. Disk Utility likewise does not show the HD. I tried going to a new OS install but can't do that either--no HD! I have reset PRAM, PMU, tried starting in Safe Mode, and removed and reinstalled the HD to "reseat", to no avail. At least now I know the HD is still physically in there! I ran Hardware Test and my aftermarket 2 gb of RAM checked out fine. I have not yet reinstalled the original 256kb RAMs, but the trouble is not pointing at the memory, as far as I can tell.
This is a remanufactured model. I had hoped all the bugs had already been gotten out of it!
I must express my frustration, I bought this computer only a couple months ago because my 12" iBook did the customary logic board failure but is not covered by the recall. Strange, my old 333 green iMac still runs like a champ after six years!
Anyway, I would appreciate any cool ideas for getting this Macbook up and going again. I have a dealer just up the street in Asuncion, but am putting off going there until I run out of other options.
    Cheers.

I had the same problem with my brand new MacBook only that I couldn't be able to use it. Since I bought it I couldn't make it to read the HD, 2 weeks since I bought it.
I bought it at MacMall and they don't even take the time to answer my emails, it seems like if they don't want to know about me. But you should have seen them when purchasing was the matter they treat me like a king.
    It is a shame.
I took my MB to an apple support center and I will have to wait 5-7 days to know what the problem is.
Maybe you should take it too
It’s my fist experience with apple, and let me tell you I feel very disappointed.
I just hope that when they repair it, no other problems will appear, like the sudden random shutdowns, o HD noise or vibration.
    Hope I have helped!

  • Windows Server 2012r2 Essentials - Dashboard - Server Folder and Hard Drives Not Showing..

    Hi,
Following the last series of Windows updates, I'm experiencing problems with our WS2012R2 Essentials server. When opening the Dashboard, the 'home:getting started' tab shows all correct except 'server folders n/a'. On checking the Storage tab, the normal
display for 'server folders' and 'hard drives' just shows 'refreshing list of items'.
Despite symptoms above, Storage Space and Server Folders show correctly in server Windows Explorer and are available to client computers across the LAN. It just appears that for some reason the Dashboard cannot see them.
One other related symptom I've noted is that for some reason the 'wsestoragesvc' Windows Server Essentials Storage Service no longer starts automatically. Even when started manually Dashboard symptoms remain - server folders and hard drives aren't visible
    on dashboard.
I've run sfc /scannow to check for problems - all clear and run chkdsk on the system volume.
Would welcome ideas on what steps to be taken to fix problem. Many thanks..

    Hi,
The issue could be due to a custom service knocks on effect on the Windows Server Essentials Storage Service and causes the service no longer starts automatically.
You could refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:

If the issue still exists, try to reinstall the Windows Server Essentials.

Not sure where these hard disk folders are located that you are referring to?  Finder, Finder tool bar, Finder side bar, Desktop, Dock?
More then likely they are  an alias that not longer point to the orginals,  thus the question mark.
I would reboot.  Delete icons if an alias and just recreate by dragging from the source. Try right click (control) click to remove.

Not sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server

When I open my files to download my pictures from my iphone 6 plus, there is a windows icon with a hard drive.  What is that? And why can't I delete it?  I already reset my phone and a week later they came back.

    I download my pictures by:
!) Connecting my iphone to he computer.
    2) It will open a window or I will go to my computer and select iphone device.
    3) Open up Iphone folders and download.
When I do that, I see a windows icon, with what looks to be a hard drive.  And when I click on it, it leads me back to my desktop.  Right now, I only have one.  I know by tomorrow I will have more.  It just keeps spreading.

"I plugged the external into the Mac and moved a folder of images onto the desktop.  It looks like it went from read only to not locked.  Is this possible?"
Yes, that's exactly what happened. If you buy another drive, you could copy from your existing drive to the new and your files will be read/write. The new drive will have to be formatted as an HFS drive (that's the Mac's format). If you need to format it, you use Disk Utility which is in the Utilities folder on your Mac. Be careful with that -- it wipes out whatever is currently on the drive. Make sure you format the right drive.
I keep all my images on an external drive, too. In fact, I have two matching drives and sync them so I always have a backup.

  • There is a question mark covering my safari icon and it wont open

Why is there a question mark covering my safari Icon and how do I remove it?

Where is it? Did you move it or did you delete it? Try doing a Spotlight search for it just in case you moved it.
Otherwise, get out your OS X installer disc and look in the optional installs folder for an installer from which you can restore pre-bundled software. You may be able to restore Safari. Or, you can download a Safari version for Tiger or Leopard at support.apple.com/downloads.

  • Can't instal Windows 7 to new hard drive

    Hello everyone,
I was looking for solution for a while, but cant find it, so I really hope you'll help me here !
First of all, I 've been using my pc until I received the S.M.A.R.T. warning about possible hard drive failure soon, and one morning PC didnt start - one of the hard drives was dead (in my hp model there are two hard drives). After finding out which one was it ( I tried taking one hard drive out, leaving the other and vice versa) I bought a new 500 GB hard drive. Aparently the damaged hard drive was the one with operating system, because of startup message which told me that operating system not found. Nothing fancy, just instal windows like I always did, or so I thought ..
Got my USB flash drive with Windows 7 64 bit, plug it in, the usual windows instal guide loads up.  I choose my language , keyboard input etc . At the point where I have to choose "where do I want to instal my windows" I see two hard drives: 1) disk 0 Partition 1 (my old original  232 GB stock drive) and 2) disk 1 Partition 1 (new recently purchased 500GB drive).
So ofcourse, since I replaced old hard drive with the new one I just bought, put it in the same slot, naturaly I chose my location for windows - new hard disk 1 Partition 1. When I highlighted it, a yellow mark apeared at the botom which said "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu".
Ok, so I tried to continue anyway, I pressed next and windows began to instal, took about 10 - 15 mins. Everythings normal until first restart part before completing instalation. PC restarted and .. Windows instalation setup started once more from the begining. So I thought , ok I ll try to instal to the old hard drive disk 0 Partition 1 ( this time there was no yellow warning mark). So instalation began again , restarted , and ... Once more instalation setup starting from begining !
I am really lost here, I tried replacing hard drives places whith each other, or leaving just one of them, every time windows starts instaling from begining ! Allthough, everytime there are less and less disk space, which means it actualy is instaling.
So any thoughts where to start ?
I would be so greatful for your help,
    And see ya

It is my understand that one of your two hard drives failed.  You have replaced the failed drive and are having a difficulty installing Windows 7 from a USB stick.
    I have some questions.
What is your exact model of n DV9700 notebook?
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Is this a retail version of Windows 7?
Were your drives setup in a RAID configuration or  just  two individual drives, one being the boot drive  with Windows.
You could try this,  I am not sure if it will work.
Remove the 232 GB drive completely from your system.
Boot to your Windows 7, USB stick and let Windows format the drive before it installing Windows.
If this completes successfully, make sure the boot order is set to boot to that drive and test it.
If you are then able to boot into windows,  shut down the notebook and reinstall the secondary drive.
    Good Luck!
