Question mark over certain applications

Hello, today I realized that my iMac was acting strange when I clicked on a few applications that I have on the dock and instead of them opening they simply had a question mark hover over the. These applications are DVD player, photo booth, mail, and a few others. I believe this may be that someone, I suspect my cousin, deleted them accidentally. Is there a way of recovering these basic applications?
Thank you.

question mark over an item in the dock means that the original item can not be found because it was either moved or deleted. first check you main Applications folder. that's where those things should be by default. if they are not there they may have been moved, do a spotlight search for them. try it from all user accounts you have on the mac as sometimes people move the apps to the desktop or a place like that. also check the Trash on all accounts. if the apps are nowhere to be found you can reinstall them from the leopard install DVD using pacifist
http://www.charlessoft.com/
you'll have to install 10.5.7 combo update afterwards to bring those apps to their latest versions.

  • Question Mark over the iChat application in dock

    hi,
I go to start my iChat application in my dock... but there is a question mark over it and it doesnt work when i click on it. what should i do? apple seems not to having anything to help me.

You deleting the icon from the dock does not delete the application from the applications folder. The question mark is there because the association between the dock icon and the actual application is broken (application missing, moved, etc.).
You don't have a Mac OS 10 installer disk? You should have gotten one when you bought the computer. Assuming that you do, there is an "optional installer" package. In Tiger, iChat was one of the applications that you could reinstall from the optional installer package on the Tiger installer DVD. I don't know off the top of my head if that is the case anymore for Leopard or not. I can't find an apple knowledge base article that talks about this for Leopard, but there is one for Tiger at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1442. If Apple still lets you reinstall iChat from the optional installer package on the Leopard operating system DVD, the procedure should be very similar.

  • Question marks on some applications in dock

Hi, when i opened my macbook today, i noticed that when i clicked on mail, there was ablack question mark over it, then i tried to open photo booth and aperture but the same thing happened, safari, itunes, pages and some other apps are working but some aren't. i verified and repaired disk permissions and searched for the broken apps in the finder but they're not there. please help...

Question marks on Dock icons indicates a hosed Launch Services database. Delete the current icons and replace them with ones from the apps. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this one-liner into the window that pops up, hit the return key, quit Terminal, and restart:

  • Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.

My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.  I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up.  Can anyone help?

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

  • IPhoto has a question mark over it. Wont open! Help?

iPhoto has a question mark over it. Wont open! It is completely inaccessible. How can i restore this to my computer and get my pics back?

iPhoto has a question mark over it.
You mean in the Dock?  Then the Dock icon is no longer linked to the application.
Did you upgrade MacOS X, so iPhoto is no longer compatible?
If you moved or deleted iPhoto, reinstall it. It will depend on your iPhoto version and MacOS X version, how to reinstall.
If your profile signature ""OS X (10.6.8)" is still valid, reinstall iPhoto from your system install disks, if iPhoto came preinstalled on your Mac, or from your iLife install disks.
If you already upgraded to Yosemite, you can reinstall iPhoto from the App Store.

  • My iphoto has a transparent question mark over it and will not open. How do I fix this?

My iphoto on my imac will not open. It has a transparent question mark over it...how do I fix it?

Is the question mark on the Dock at the bottom of your screen? Then it means that the Dock can't find the application.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Bought new iworks suite this summer - can't open numbers...has a faded question mark over the icon

I bought new updated iworks suite this summer.  I've opened and used pages, but when I tried to open the icon on Numbers on my dock it will not open.  I only get options" and then can remove from dock.  there is a faded question mark over the numbers icon.  any help would be appreciated.  thanks, K

Where are the applications stored on your HD ?
    Keynote.app, Numbers.app and Pages.app must be located
    in the folder Applications:iWork '09
What you see in the Dock are symbolic links (kind of aliases) to the applications.
It seems that for some reason the link between the Numbers symbolic link and the app is broken.
    (1) check the locations of the applications and if they aren't in the correct ones, repair this oddity.
    (2) If needed, uncheck the local menu item : Dock > Numbers > Options > Keep in the Dock
then drag the icon to the Desktop. You will get the Poof icon saying that the symlink is destroyed.
    (3) Double click the Numbers.app icon to run the app.
    (4) Now you will be able to check the local menu item : Dock > Numbers > Options > Keep in the Dock
so that the Numbers icon will remain in the dock when you quit the app.

  • I'm getting a question mark over my systems preferences icon

    hello all,
I'm getting a question mark over my systems preferences icon and now I can't open it or my time capsule icon. I uninstalled a program and after that I started to experience this problem. Any idea what is going on and how I can solve the problem.
    Thanks in advance
    ACinLA

Check inside your Applications folder and see if you can find your System Preferences Application. If you can see there try and open it. If it works then drag it to the dock creating a new alias and remove the question mark. If you do not see System Preferences in the Applications folder then it may have been moved or even deleted. Try searching for it. If you find it move it back to the Applications folder.

  • Installation issue - Question Mark over icon?

    Hi.
I just purchased FCE4 to upgrade from my old version.
I did the install, and it said it was successful.
    I rebooted.
My FCE icon has a big question mark over it, and clicking on it doesn't open the software.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

It sounds like you're looking at your Dock icon which can't find the old version.  Open your Applications folder and see if FCE will open using that icon.

  • Question mark over Quicktime logo in Safari - MacBook

    Hi,
I have a black macbook on which FCP studio is installed and therefore QT Pro.
While browsing in Safari, (Latest 10.4.7 and Safari updates) and trying to access a link which plays streaming Qt's or just plain ones, I receive a Question mark over the Quicktime logo in place of the movie.
When right clicking the link and saving target, it downloads the movie and opens it in quicktime ok.
What the **** is going on.
On my G5 no problems to access these exact same links...
    Pretty annoying I would say
    ThanX

Yeah, this is very common right now. Problem is not with Quicktime, but with the Shockwave plug-in in Safari. it is not yet native to intel-based Macs so it will not activate properly as is.
Unfortunately, there is nothing yet to update to, so you can either live with it as is or run Safari in Rosetta mode which will slow it down slightly, but give you all the web content properly.
    Try this:
    Quit Safari
Go to the Safari icon in Applications
    Ctrl-click the icon
    Go to "Get Info"
Click the box next to "Open using Rosetta"
    Open Safari
This will solve the problem until an Intel-compliant Shockwave plug-in comes out.

  • PhotoBooth Has a Question Mark Over the Icon in the Dock

I'm trying to fix my bosses daughters MacAir. Her brother was playing around with PhotoBooth and now you can't even open it. The icon in the dock has a question mark over it and when I go into her applications and double click on PhotoBooth nothing happens. It looks like it loads but really it's just a quick half second thing and nothing happens. No PhotoBooth options show up on the top either, it just doesn't load at all.
How can I get her PhotoBooth back working? She has Mac OS X Version 10.5.5 and all possible updates are installed.
    Any help would be appreciated...

Perform a custom install from the Mac OS X 10.5 disks and install only that component if possible; if not, use Pacifist to install it. In either case, rerun the combo updater for your Mac OS X version afterwards.

I have a problem with iphoto (have a mac book pro): the icon in the dock appears with a question mark, and the application is gone!!! Can someone tell what's going on? Yesterday I had the same problem with itunes: I downloaded the last version (it's free), but I cannot do the same with iphoto, and more important: I need to know what is happening!!! Please help me!

Applications should not disappear all by themselves.
If they are then that coud indicate serious problems with your hard drive.
Backup everything up as quickly as possible.
Using Disk Utility verify your system disk.

  • Question mark over the Mail icon

What can I do if there is a question mark over the mail icon in dock... I can't open the Mail now. Thanks!

you can reinstall Mail using the leopard install DVD. insert the DVD and open it in finder. among other things you should see a folder called "optional installs". Open it and double-click on Optional Installs.mpkg. Follow the instructions. at the appropriate page you'll have to check the box for "Mail" on the list of software you want to install.
This will install Mail 3.0. To update it to the latest version of mail reinstall
    [10.5.3 combo update|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1053comboupdate.html].
