Question marks throughout my webpage

Hey guys/gals,
I just recently started with iWeb and it work good until I publish my site. At that point, my site goes live, but throughout the site there are random question marks in my text and in random areas of the screen. Can someone help me with this? I have no idea what is causing them.
Cratin

This is probably caused by the wrong settings in your FTP program. See this note:

More than likely the people reporting this problem are Windows users that use Outlook as their email client and you are using RTF for message composition.
Using Plain Text instead should resolve it. Since the same does not occur with all email clients when using RTF with Mail - primarily with Outlook, this is more of an Outlook problem than a Mail problem. There aren't any email clients that are completely bug free but for such an old/mature email client, Outlook has it's share.

  • QT logo with Question Mark and Blank screen sound ok on training videos

I suddenly had all sort of problems (before 10.4.9) with QT logo and Question Marks throughout all browsers and also suddenly unable to continue training programs using files such as "avibasicmono.htm" and "introbasicmono.htm" .
finally think I have solved the QT logo by replacing Flash 9.0 with the old 8.022.
I could now also see current issues of magazines again on a site www.picturebusiness.uk.com (weird naming).
however I am not able to see the training videos at all but I hear the AVI files
Macosx 10.4.9 Quicktime 7.1.3 (removed 7.1.5 to try that option did not work)
will stay with what works until I hear more...

    www.picturebusiness.uk.com uses Flash Media.
Tell us more info about the AVI's. Are they found at that Site?
    Give us a link.

  • Video error - seeing white question mark when post to my webpage.

Hey everyone, I was wondering if you can help me out.
I recently updated my software and now I'm using iWeb 2.0.4. I created a video using Final Cut Pro and rendered out a .m4v version which I've done several times in the past without a problem. The video of course plays fine in iWeb, I click Publish To Folder (since its not going to a .mac account), then upload the site via FTP. Once on the site, I get a white question mark.
So what I'm wondering is this...could it be the update thats causing the problem OR could it possibly be the server I'm using? This server I've never used before so I don't know how it handles video. Maybe it can't play QT or something...I don't know? I've done this exact same thing several times before and don't know why I'm having problems now. Its only a 3 min. video. I posted ones a lot bigger without a problem but those we put on another server.
If someone could offer me a suggestion I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you tried using the Publish All to MobileMe menu option? Also you can publish to a folder on the desktop and check to see if the movie file is getting included with the other files.
When you're viewing your site with Safari use the Window->Activity menu option. There you can view all the files that are loaded when your page loads and see the size and if it's there at all.

  • Instead of an apple, I get a file folder with a question mark!

Hi. I turned on my MacBook today, and instead of the apple popping on to the screen after a few seconds, I got something that looks like a file folder with a question mark in the middle of it. Then it starts to flash! Turned it off with the power button, tried again a few times...same result. Anyone know what to do? Thanks

If the computer starts up after a brief delay, you probably just need to reselect your startup volume. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Startup Disk and select the the desired startup volume.
If your computer does not start up, try repairing your startup disk and reselecting your Mac OS X startup volume. Click the link below for the webpage with detailed instructions.

  • HELP! Getting Blue Q with question marks when visiting web sites

I see from the replies to similar posts that is is recommended to use the default settings under Advanced/ mime settings, in Quick time
I always had all boxes checked in all the categories as my preference would be to have Quick time play every thing. And encountered no problems .
I recently purchased flip4mac studio and now every thing is all messed up, web pages that used to work fine as far as saving content to my desk top or downloads folder, or copying and pasting urls, for sharing now work no more, I get the blue Q with the question mark as shown in these web sites I am completely hobbled as far as sharing my videos.
[Post Edited by Hosts due to adult content]
What are the correct settings for quicktime preferences ?
and please explain kiosk mode , I do have Macromedia flash player installed, and I guess Adobe, when I visit different sites with video, and I control click on the player I am able to tell which player is playing the media, only quicktime offers the save to my computer option, this is how I wound up with flip 4 mac, it was recommended to play content , I also just upgraded my safari to the beta version

"What are the correct settings for quicktime preferences ?"
Make sure you have the latest versions of Adobe Flash Player Software
QuickTime Preferences > Advanced > MIME Stettings > Miscellaneous.
    Deactivate the "Flash Media" option.
This tells the browser not to to display Flash Media and lets the newly installed Adobe software work its magic.

    Thanks to QuickTimeKirk........
    Quit QuickTime.
Open User (Home)/Library/Preferences and delete any .plist file with QuickTime in its name. Don't worry as a new one will be created.
Open System Preferences/QuickTime and see if the window and tabs work as they should.

  • Pictures on internet coming up as question marks

PLEASE HELP....I recently purchased a Macbook Pro and am having trouble viewing pictures online. I am a college student and a frequent visitor of Facebook and Myspace. However, I am unable to view web pages and pictures on these sites. Pictures show as blue question marks and background on webpage doesn't show at all!! I use these sites to keep in touch with family, friends, and ex co-workers. Please help.

    Are you using an adblocker?
Go to Safari Preferences and check the box "Display images when the page opens"
Other than that, the only thing I can tell you is refresh the pages to see if the image comes up, use a different browser and see if the images show up, or take it into an Apple store and ask one of the employees there.

  • Japanese, Question Marks, Locales, Eclipse, and Windows XP ????

Hello. I am having some issues localizing JSP to Japanese. I have read a lot of stuff on the topic. I have my .properties file in unicode with native2ascii, etc.
When I debug under Eclipse 3.0, I see the Japanese characters correctly displayed in my properties file and inside of strings internal to to the program. However, when I try to print them with a System.out.println, I get question marks (??????).
My reading tells me that the ???? indicate that the characters cannot be displayed. I am somewhat confused because in the same Eclipse context I can clearly see the Japanese characters in the debugging window.
Thus I am missing the part where I set my standard output to correctly display the characters like Eclipse is displaying them in windows other than the "Console" window.
My default encoding is CP1252. If I do something like:
    out = new java.io.PrintStream(System.out, true, "UTF-8");
and print my unicoded resource from the bundle I get the UTF-8 character representation (). With System.out.println I get ?????
My first reaction would be that the Japanese fonts aren't on my system, but clearly they are as I can see them in other windows.
When I try to show a Japanese resource on the web page that is the result of the jsp file I get ????. I can display the same characters UTF-8 encoded in a php page.
    Here is another example:
    java.util.Locale[] locales = { new java.util.Locale("en", "US"), new java.util.Locale("ja","JP"), new java.util.Locale("es", "ES"),
    new java.util.Locale("it", "IT") };
    for (int x=0; x< locales.length; ++x) {
    String displayLanguage = locales[x].getDisplayLanguage(locales[x]);
    System.out.println(locales[x].toString() + ": " + displayLanguage);
    displays:
    en_US: English
    ja_JP: ???
    es_ES: espaol
    it_IT: italiano
instead of the correct Japanese characters.
    What's the secret?
    Thanks.

What do you want to do exactly? 1. Making a window application? 2. Making a console application? 3. Making a JSP webpage?
    1. If it's window application, there's nothing to worry about if you use Swing. But if you use AWT, it's time to switch to Swing.
    2. If you're making console application, solution does exist as others had pointed out but you'd better forget it because no console in whatever platform supports Unicode (Linux xterm may be an exception? But it probably has font problem). So, even if you could display characters in your computer, the solution isn't universal. You can't ask your every user to switch system locale, install whatever font in order to display a few characters!!
    3. If you're making JSP, I'd advise you to use UTF-8 in webpages. Most browsers nowadays (probably more than 90%) could support UTF-8. All you need is to add the following JSP headers to your every page:
    <%@ page contentType="text/html;charset=utf-8" %>
<%@ page pageEncoding="iso-8859-1" %>Now, your every out.println(s); will send the correct data to browser without the least effort from you. All conversions are automatic!
However, just to make things even surer, you could add this HTML meta header:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">You use Tomcat, right? I do, and I don't have any problem.
    Last words:
But, if all you want to do with System.out.println is for debugging, you could use
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "your string here");But you'd better have Java 5, or at least 1.4.2, if you want to have everything displayed correctly.

  • Chinese characters in outgoing emails become question marks

Hi, all. My AT&T Blackberry Curve 8900 loaded with the AT&T East-asian rom can read and write Chinese, in IM, email, webpages. There is only one problem with the outgoing emails. I can compose an Email in Chinese and send it. The email is displayed correctly on my phone, but when shown up in the receiving email-box, all chinese characters will become question marks.
I am using Hotmail - I don't know whether this is some problem with the server.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Question mark instead of apostrophe

In many webpages where there is supposed to be a apostrophe I see a blacked out question mark, as depicted below. Any ideas?
In the central system, for example, the MX-980 can trigger sophisticated smart macros, RS232 and relay controls via a centrally installed MSC-400 Master Controller. At each local system location, the MX-980 addresses an RF Base Station, like URCs new MRF-260, which extends the remotes range to 50 to 100 feet, and eliminates the line-of-sight requirement. In any room with a projector, lighting switch or other IR-controlled device not connected to a central MSC-400 or local MRF, the MX-980s built-in IR signal is effective at a range of 30 to 50 feet.

Thanks for the reply. If, while in Safari, I click View:TextEncoding and choose Western ISO Latin 1, the fonts are normal. Choosing Unicode, Default or Western MAC OS, the fonts are not correct.
So, I figured I'd choose Western ISO Latin 1. Problem is, when I close Safari and re-open, it's back to Default and displays the fonts incorrectly again.
I guess I'm not sure which text encoding is proper for the United States and how to set that proper encoding as default.
Thanks for any more help you can provide.

  • QUESTION MARKS IN BOXES ON EBAY

Starting yesterday I began to see a whole new ebay webpage with question marks in boxes where the usual click buttons are. I also have trouble seeing photos and all the pages seem a lot "rougher" (not as slick as they used to be). Did I do something easy or is this another kind of problem?
    Thanks Tim Trotter

Apple won't respond to your query. If you want a response you'll need to call Apple Care.
Something else you can try is cleaning the system cache files. There are a number of products that do this - I use OnyX. There is no charge for the software, but I believe the developer asks for a donation.
It's very easy to use. I run it twice a month. Once it is installed, you would double click on the OnyX icon in your application folder (or drag an icon to your dock for quick access) to open the application. After entering your administrator password, you would select "automation". The panel looks like this:
Select the same items I have checked, except for "repair permissions" as you have already done this step. Also, select in the cache section "system and kernel" and then select "execute". The program takes about 5 to 10 minutes to run. Leave your computer alone, that is don't use it for anything else until OnyX is finished. Once complete, restart the computer and try Safari.

  • Blue question marks in safari...

I was changing around the layout of my blog and made a large image file as the header. I use firefox mostly, but I checked it on safari to see whether or not it was rendering correctly.
In Firefox, the image displays fine.
In Safari, the image displays as a blue question mark with the Alt Text.
It's a standard, jpeg image... What is going on here?
    Derek
PS- www.colouroftelevision.com if you'd like to confirm.

the image fails to display in any mac browser I've tried - likely because it is specified as http://bp0.blogger.com/iS1G_xkE-wg/RwYAgfGLUI/AAAAAAAAADA/YjumUlp80dw/s1600/colour-of-television.jpg which blogger.com refuses to serve to a webpage, only as a download.
I would guess that the blogger software or page-writing app you use has maybe messed up the image storage somehow.

  • Blue Q's with question marks

After updating to quicktime 7.0.4 all my webpages that had quicktime images only displayed a Q with a question mark on top of them. I uninstalled 7.0.4 and went back to 7.0.1 and the problem did not go away. Updated to 7.0.3 and still have the same problem. What could be causing this?

I have all the same problems. I've installed Flash Player 8 and that didn't fix the problem. The MIME setting is also unchecked. I know that at www.metacafe.com all the videos seem to Windows Media files, but that hasn't been a problem in the past. I havn't tried removing the plug-in file, but others in these forums say that doesn't work. Should I try that?

  • Quicktime and question marks on web pages

Any time I went to a web page that had a QT in it, it was fine. Now when I go to a webpage I see the QT logo with a question mark in it. What happened!
    Thanks in advance

Regardless of what 'happened', Quicktime with a ? refers to Flash video. No idea why this question seems to get asked several times a day, by which I mean why is it suddenly happening to a lot of users. To rectify it, try this:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
