Question: Migration to new mac

I need help. Just received a new MacBook Pro and used the migration feature to bring all my apps and files to the new Mac. Logged out of Creative Cloud on older Mac. All my Adobe apps migrated EXCEPT for the Creative Cloud program itself. When I open an app, it says the Creative Cloud add is lost or damaged and gives me a link to download. But I have tried this about 6 times and the installer initializes and runs, but it never works and comes back with the same message that I need to download it. Any solutions to get running again on the new Mac? Thanks in advance! Kerry Jenkins

Run the cleaner tool and start from scratch. You pretty much screwed yourself with this migration nonsense.

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.
You'll need to first clean up the mess with this tool:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download an installer from here:

Or you can actived the right button on your magic mouse and click on they icon in the dock. then you select "stop" and it's out of your dock.

After migrating to new Mac iCal pop-up screen is mostly off screen and I can't seem to find a way to get it so that it pops up in the middle of the screen or anywhere else where I can see the whole thing.

This is a known bug which began to occur with the 10.4.8 update. I suggest you file a bug report with Apple. Its quite annoying and hopefully, the more people who contact Apple about it, the more importance they will give to fixing the problem.

If you are syncing using iCloud, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (computers) and checking Safari. If it is checked, try deselecting it, wait 10-15 seconds, and then check it again.

  • Time Machine after migration to new Mac

So, I just got a new Mac, and used the option to copy settings and files from a Time Machine volume to the new machine. Now that everything's run, though, I can't use Time Machine to backup the new Mac -- it says "Volume not found". I've Googled a bit, but most of the troubleshooting seems to assume that the drive is missing or won't mount -- the drive is there, but the Time Machine software won't use it.
    What are my options here?

    Hi VK
    A supplementray question:
I have one i-mac happily backing up with Time Machine to an external hard drive.
I have just bought a second i-mac (stops the fighting!) and propose to use migration assistant to move my [admin] account from the old to the new i-mac leaving two other accounts on the old one. I see from your posts that it seems as if Time Machine will start a new back up series for the new i-mac's back ups. But what about the old i-mac? Will that continue to extend the existing Time Machine back up files, albeit without my transferred account and its files? If so, should I partition the external drive and start the new back ups from the new i-mac on this new partition. I'd like to end up with the old i-mac continuing to build its Time Machine back ups (less my account and its files) and have a new back up series from the new i-mac building to a separate partition on the external drive.
Does this make sense? I can't see an answer in the forum to what must be a reasonably common issue in this expandin mac world.

  • I want to migrate to new Mac. How do I also Restore the partition with old Snow Leopard?

I will install a second internal HD first, and use Time Machine Restore to it with the Migration Assistant on the new Mac's Mountain Lion.
Then I will erase the preinstalled Mountain Lion internal HD, and:
How do I now proceed to Restore to an internal partition on the new Mac, my (still) left Time Machine copy of Snow Leopard,( just a spare system partition, also for Power PC Apps)?
If I install a new Snow Leopard first from DVD and then tries the Migration Assistant in it, can it us a Mountain Lion Time Machine backup of the Snow Leopard partition? Or can Mountain Lion Migration Assistant be used for Restoring and Migrating Snow Leopard.
I do not have a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup copy of the partition left. Otherwise I could have taken that on a new installed Snow Leopard.
Thankful for all ideas, also I understand that HD Restore fully on the whole partition without using Migration Assistant will not work.
    Another question:
I hope that I can use my new Mac with the old Mac OS X licenses and transfer the new preinstalled Mac OS Mountain Lion license to the old Mac, before giving it away?
    Thanks,
    /groundliner

    Thanks!
I'm not familiar with the issue of what Mac OS new Macs manages. That puts things in another perspective. I have Lion on a fast 8 GB USB Stick, can I not boot from that either? Of Course, I may be able to put the Mountain Lion Installer on the stick, instead. It could not upgrade the stick to Mountain Lion due to not having enough space for that. But I maybe could fix that. Just wondering - I have several hard disks around, I could try to put the preinstalled Mountain Lion OS version on one of those. Best copying method?
I did not know that transfer of OS Mountain Lion was not allowed. Leopard license document mentions transfer of hardware and software to another person. So I thought the Mac App Store license was similar - bought for and on just this old iMac, that it also could be transferred to another person. Which would solve the problem for my friend who should have it!
I keep planning, but I think running old Power PC Apps maybe was no big deal.

  • Migration to new Mac from FireWire clone

Hi. I'm planning to buy a new iMac in a few weeks when the line is refreshed. I'm currently running my 2006 iMac from a FireWire clone as the internal disk went south just before Christmas.
What I'm planning to do is use this clone drive to migrate all my stuff using Setup Assistant on first boot of the new Mac. I believe I can do this using the "another volume on this Mac" option (please correct me if I'm wrong).
    However, I have two questions…
    1) Should I connect the FireWire drive before I turn the new Mac on, or after?
    2) As this clone drive is set to be the boot drive on my current iMac, will that cause problems in terms of transferring settings? By which I mean, will the setting be transferred to have the backup drive boot the new Mac, instead of the new internal disk?
    Many thanks.

Thanks. For some reason I already have one of those cables - not sure why I bought it originally because I've never used it. Have a feeling it might be something to do with music.
Good fortune to have on at hand!
Anyway, yes I'll probably try migrating from the FW clone using Setup Assistant on first boot. I've done it before with other Macs and had no trouble.
Then you should have no trouble.

  • Problem after migrating to new Mac

Hi, I changed my Mac from an iBook to a new Mac Mini running 10.8.2
I had Dreamweaver installed from the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium. Version 9.0 Build 3481
Dreamweaver was working fine before I migrated all my files on old Mac to the new one.
Now when I launch DW I get a window with a question mark & another saying what version & build I have.
When I "Get Info' on DW3 in my applications folder size is 298,696,470 bytes (302.4 MB on disk) for 249 items in case that helps.
I thought to re-install DW from my instal disc.
Dragged old version to trash, then read the readme in the installer & put it back in Applications.
I tried to use the un-installer as directed but when I enter my password in "Set up"it says "Required resources are missing."
I thought to try to intall over the old version but when I start to install I get the same "Required resources are missing." message.
(Photoshop from the same suite is working fine, also Adobe Acrobat.
I'd also like to try Fireworks now I have an Intel Mac.)
How to proceed to get going again with DW?
    plmk?
    Thanks.

Thanks Preran, I chatted using that chat box & was forwarded to the instilation team.
They sugested downloading the CS3 Design Premium software for a fresh start but the link they gave me wouldn't accept my login, maybe because I bought though a University who has an account there.
They told me:  CS3 hasn't been tested with Mountain Lion...
I tried launching Bridge & that worked OK.
I thought about trashing all the apps ...
    But I didn't
I tried putting in the intall disc & re-installing over the old version.
I just installed the 2 apps I had already installed & shared componets.
They( PS & DW) now seem to be working fine so far, didn't ask for any serial number at all.
Just had to delete & add browers again in DW.
    So seems to working OK.
If anyone is in same position I'm not sure if the clean tool is the way to go.
Mabe it helped in long run but at 1st it just made it so I couldn't use the apps. at all.
Thanks for being here, that did help.

  • IPod behaviour after migration to new Mac

Hi. I recently bought a new Mac (I'm typing from an old one!) and used the Migration Assistant to move my account from a machine a work. I then copied the music files from this home machine to the new machine. Finally I exported the library from this machine and imported it onto the new machine. (I wanted to merge some of the account functions of my home and work machines on the new machine).
My problem is that both this machine at home and the new machine want to sync the iPod but are now not quite in sync (e.g. ratings, play counts, LastFM scrobbles, etc.) and this causes some hassle. I basically want to automatically sync with the new machine and for the old machine to ignore the iPod. However if I set the iPod to manual management on this old machine, the setting is also seen on the new machine. Is there some way round this?..
The third machine (the one at work) behaves differently - it sees it as synced to a different machine and so gives the dialog asking what to do. I think therefore a more specific question is can I make the iTunes settings on the new machine and the old home machine look like -different- machines? I'm happy to delve into the library XML if need be.
(All three machines are authorised to my iTunes Store account but I don't think this matters)
    Thanks,
    Jeremy Morley

You can always switch the iPod to manually manage for connecting up to the other two computer then when you connect back to the main computer where you master library is, switch it back to Auto Sync. You won't lose anything and it only takes a checkbox change and <Apply> button to change it.
As a side note, if you switch the iPod to manually manage for the other computers, you don't need to have libraries on those. Just have iTunes installed and when you plug in your manually managed iPod, you can play your library directly out of the iPod via the iTunes app. A great trick for having iTunes on a work computer without loading it up with a big media library.
Side note #2, if you format the iPod in Windows format, then ALL computers (Mac and Windows) can use it. If the iPod is in Mac format, then Windows computers won't be able to access it.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • IPhoto Migration to new Mac--MAJOR ISSUES

We just got a new iMac to replace our previous 2006 iMac that was running Mountain Lion. It had already been determined by a Mac repair person that our old iPhoto library was corrupted and that we couldn't migrate that Library to the new Mac. Rather, we'd need to drag the "Originals" folder to the new Mac. Note: Due to the amount of photos we have, we store our photos on an external hard drive. (Also, nevermind that the 35K photos that were so carefully organized into folders and albums over the past 8 years would be lost). Fine. That's what we did. Major issues ensued:
    1. Everytime I've imported photos from my iPhone over the past two years, random photos (mostly those that I edited in Apps like hipstogram) multiplied and were reimported EVERYTIME I plugged my phone in the Mac. There are, like 10 copies of certain photos.
    2. Many photos are somehow duplicated, but in different "rolls." How do I even find the duplicates? They're dated when they were imported, not created. Grrr...
    3. During the import to the new Mac, an error message let us know that 795 photos were not imported. Which ones? Don't know.
    4. The WORST issue of all, a lot of the metadata on the photos is incorrect. Some is user error (Canon camera had the year as 2007 when it was really 2008), but a lot of photos imporated from the iphone over the years are saying 1/20/1980 or another nonsensical date. Or the photos are dated as the date of import, not when they're taken. So, not only did I lose the organization of the library, the metadata is incorrect. For many of the 35 thousand photos over 12 years.
The result? A jumbled nightmare of "Events" that aren't in chronological order in the new iPhoto.
Sidenote: Why can I navigate to the Originals photo files in the old Mac, but I cannot navigave via the finder to the Originals in the new Mac? The only way I can get there is to click "Go to original file" from iPhoto...and even then, its location is unclear.
I don't know what to do from here. The options as I see them:
    1. Clean up the duplicates/metadata in the old Originals folder and re-import the folder to the new Mac.
    2. Start with the current debacle on the new Mac and painstackingly reorganize all the folders (cleaning up, correcting dates).
Another sidenote: Is there a way to delete a photo in iPhoto and truly delete the file? I started deleting duplicates on the new iMac and I have to navigate to the original file (in its mysterious location), delete it, and then delete the thumbnail in iPhoto. This may take a year or two to complete. There has a be a better way. Help.....me.....

Our Mac person determined that our library was corrupted because various attempts to rebuild the cache/library were unsuccessful (spinning wheel and error messages).
try to reproduce this on your old computer nad report the exact error messages (and look at the iPhoto menu ==> about iPhoto to get the version)
So, from what I understand, the best path forward would be to fix/rebuild the old library to be able to migrate it to the new machine
    Yes
I do have a question about deleting photos in iPhoto. How do I handle eliminating duplicate photos in an iPhoto library (new or old)? My understanding is that deleting an image in iPhoto does not delete the actual file (in originals or masters or where ever it is housed on the Mac). Does this matter? Why would deleting photos in iPhoto cause corruption of the library?
Duplicates - IPLM does them very well
And most certainly deleting using iPhoto properly does totally remove the photo form iPhoto and from th ehard drive
Deleting in iPhoto is trivial - select a photo in an event, press the delete key and empty the iPhoto trash (do not let the iPhoto trash get large since sometimes iPhoto does not handle large trash bins well) - on later versions then you need to empty the system trash too
Do that and the photo is gone from iPhoto and from the Mac (given that you have a corrupted library past deletes might not have worked - from a properly working library it will work)
Deleting using iPhoto will not corrupt anything
    BUT you stated
I started deleting duplicates on the new iMac and I have to navigate to the original file (in its mysterious location), delete it,
That is NOT using iPhoto to delete photos - it is using the finder to go directly into the contents of the iPhoto library and makeing changes  - that corrupts the database

  • Migrating to new Mac via Time Machine: computers conflicting?

If I get a new Mac, and then during the Setup Assistant tell it to migrate from my Time Machine drive, will I have any conflicts with the old Mac? For example, will both computers have the same machine name? Will they be trying to write to the same Time Machine backup? I want to continue to use the old Mac, but want all my stuff on the new Mac, too.
    Thanks!

Yes, but you can easily change one (or both) via +System Preferences > Sharing.+
Will they be trying to write to the same Time Machine backup?
No. Time Machine keeps track of which Mac is which by its +Ethernet Address,+ which is embedded in the hardware on the logic board.
If you're going to be backing-up both Macs to the same place, see #4 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Two questions about my new Mac Pro

Just got my new Mac Pro up and running and have two questions (issues)
First, I had to buy the DVI to ADC Display adapter to hook up my Cinema Display but now I can't turn the computer on from the monitor like I use to. Is that right? It's no big deal to have to turn it on at the computer itself, just wondering if anybody else is having this happen.
Also, the audio out at the back of the computer doesn't work. I've tried plugging in my speaker as well as my headset and nothing. If I plug either of those into the headset jack in the front of the computer all is well. Any thoughts?
Otherwise, I sure do love my Mac Pro!
    Thanks.

I had to buy the DVI to ADC Display adapter to hook up my Cinema Display but now I can't turn the computer on from the monitor like I use to. Is that right?
ADC has pins for power control and the power light. DVI does not have these signals so the display's power button cannot turn on the computer when used with a DVI to ADC adapter.

  • User ID Not Recognized in App Store after Migrating to new Mac

I migrated to a new Mac using Migration Assistant being careful to create an identical user account on the new Mac. All went fine. When it came time to update apps through MAS, some apps updated and some would not (e.g. Pixelmator) and MAS tells me "You have updates available for other accounts" and asks me to log out and sign in as another user – but the user name is exactly the same as my current user name. There is definitely only one user account on the Mac, so what is going on?

Cracked it – thanks. The message that MAS displays is not clear and looks like it's referring to User Name. Also MAS does not have a Preferences dialog where you would normally enter Account/Apple ID details, but it's under the Store menu item – confusing.

  • Time Machine consistency after migrating to new Mac

I have just migrated my Macbook Black to my new MacBook Silver, and I am away from my Time Machine backup. I have a new account name on my new MacBook Silver, so as to not cause any kind of disambiguation error. How do I continue with my Time Machine backup with my new machine? Is there some way of connecting the data on this new machine with the backup that was generated on the old machine?
    Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have a similar problem. I restored my new Mac with the Time Machine from the old Mac. Now I want to keep on using incremental. Why I can't?
Because it's a new and different Mac, and TM backs up Macs, not just drives, or files and folders. Besides, unless they're absolutely identical (same make & model of everything internal and external), there are different drivers, etc.
Also, I can't see that option of "Browse Other Time Machines".
From the TM icon in the menubar, where you normally see +Enter Time Machine+, if you press Option, you should see +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+
My problem is, I didn't change any file since the old Mac in any file (except tiny changes), but now it tells me that in order to make a new back up it needs a lot more space than I have in the Time Machine. If I had the old Mac it would simply update an incremental...
If you'd done a complete restore on your old system, TM would make a complete, new, full backup. It may seem strange, but reloading a file is the same as changing it, as far as TM is concerned.
    Here's the scoop: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
Think of it this way: TM backs-up everything, not just your "raw" data. Any change you make to a file or folder, even just moving it, means something changed, so TM backs it up.
