  • Question RE Editable PDF

    My problem is ...
I am working with a Nightingale-Conant program from Garrett Gunderson called "New Rules To Get Rich," which has a PDF workbook to download.  However, after having copied the workbook to my computer as instructed (twice now) when I return to work on my plan, the document will not let me pick up where I have left off.
I get a message when I reopen the workbook that says, "This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available. Please contact the author for the original version of this document."
What do I need to do to have the workbook respond to continuous editing as I do the exercises?

Using Version X at the moment.

  • Hello question about certified pdf

    Hello,
I have a question about certified pdf.
My client wants to have a certified pdf , when  I make a high resolution PDF in CMYK is this oke for print media?
Or do I need to do somthing els??
    Ton

As Dov says, it's very likely that what they actually mean is a PDF/X file - some flavors of which you can make from InDesign using the Export > PDF (Print) dialog presets, and some you can make using Acrobat Pro.
However it's very important to find out exactly what they want:
There a couple of versions of PDF/X (the older PDF/X-1a is very widely supported but can only cope with CMYK - the newer PDF/X-4 is more flexible and handles things like spot colors, but is often not printable on older hardware).
When exporting to CMYK you have to choose a color profile - and that will depend on the printer's hardware and proofing systems. You may have to choose exactly the right one, or they may be able to convert back from any profile - until you find out you're working in the dark.
Of course you also need to know the printer's rules about bleed, TAC, etc.

  • Some Questions on Adobe PDF Forms

    Hi,
I have some questions on Adobe Forms development (especially Adobe Forms in ABAP)
    1)     In a form interface, in the Code Initialization can we use Object Oriented Syntaxes such as class method calls, etc?
    2)     Can we declare Global Data variables with reference to Class References / Interfaces
    3)     Can we use the latest ECC 6.0 enhancement framework to add code in the standard form interface to enhance / enrich some logic within the form? This is to avoid copying the form interface into a Z in order to enrich the form via coding?
Please let me know if this is possible at all and how
    Will award points
    Thanking You in advance
    Regards,
    Aditya

That is possible of course. You should use the PDFObject API for that requirements.
    1. define a xml schema with all data given by SAP system.
    2. create a form template which uses this schema as data connection
    3. implement a java application (i.e. J2EE application) which:
    - gets the data from SAP system and generates some pdf files (using PDFObject API)
    - reads pdf files back to xml and submits the data to a BAPI

  • Why don't the questions as reported in forms match the order of questions on the pdf form used to collect the data?

I imported a PDF from for my survey. Then, I distributed it. People have completed it and the results have been submitted back to my FormsCentral account. The first two questions are text entry, then there are two 6 option multiple-choice questions before a 3 option multiple choice question. Why is it that in the report gives me results from four 6-option multiple choice questions before the 3-option question when there are only two? To make matters worse, the questions aren't coded with the text of the questions. They're coded cryptically, as are the responses. What the heck is going on and can I fix this?

    Drew:
I'm having trouble deciphering what you wrote: "As I said, the initial order seems somewhat arbitrary from the user's perspective." As I work in the political arena, I'm parsing this out. It's either a brilliantly worded "you're screwed" statement, or there is some ambiguity and hope here. Let's deconstruct:
"initial order" Does this mean the order of my questions in the survey? There's nothing arbitrary about them. I know the order of my questions
"somewhat arbitrary" Does this mean there's actually some order to the way the results are being outputted? If so, how do I determine that order?
"from the user's perspective." Is there another perspective from which the actual (original/initial) ordering of the questions can be resurrected?
I'm not trying to badger. That's not my intent. You have a user here who is reading hope from your words, and I'm trying to distinguish between real hope and a nice way of saying "SOL."
    So:
Answer One:  There is some hope
    Answer Two:  SOL
After this, I can mark the question. Thank you.

  • Security question about opening PDFs in Reader as opposed to Standard or Professional

Our ITC wants us to open all downloaded PDFs in Acrobat Reader 9 as opposed to Acrobat 7.0 Standard. We currently have both. We download a lot of PDFs and frequently need to Reduce File Size or extract pages, etc. I am hoping to upgrade my Acrobat 7.0 Standard to Professional 9.
Is there a valid security reason to always open first in Reader? Based on what I have read Acrobat Reader 9 and Professional 9 both had security risks and it is my understanding that a patch has been released today.
Is there a security risk still for Acrobat Professional 9 and is there a security risk for Acrobat Standard 7.0? Does requiring us to download, save and open PDFs in Reader 9 first make sense from a security standpoint?
Thanks very much for any input.

I don't remember any claims that Reader was safer than Acrobat. I use Acrobat exclusively and Adobe recommends against installing both due to conflicts (they use a lot of the same files). The biggest factor to be careful about is to not open any attachments or applications that may be built in. These can be put in the PDF and both Acrobat and Reader open such tools. I would tend to question the basis for the IT folks decision, particularly based on the Adobe recommendation and problems that it creates. At least that is my opinion.

I have a question about Multiple option question. How to create Multiple option single answer question with explanation popup in interactive PDF. Please guide me.

    Yes, this worked fine.
I just had to place the animal to the left of the table and just reduce it slightly in size. It worked fine.

  • Questions about my PDF portfolio.

I have only a few questions about a CD portfolio I am designing with Acrobat Professional (8.0)
There were a few things i couldn't figure out on my own.
I have about 15-20 pieces to show on CD, but there is no web design involved, so I couldn't use my own web site layout to just throw onto CD, out of that convenience.
    1) How do you make sure the PDF will always opens at the size you want?
For example, whenever I set the document at actual size (100% view) I close and open the document, and it reopens at a random size, such as 317 percent.
    WTH?
    2) Where can I find examples of design portfolios that were designed in Acrobat? Everyone's portfolio is online these days, which is not my style.
    3) Is it possible to make a 'thumbnail view' on the first PDF page (like you would see in a gallery on a website) that links from that page to any one of the 15-20 pieces?
    Any advice is much appreciated.

  • Color question (Pantone to PDF)

This is probably more of an Adobe Distiller question, but
    I'll ask
    anyways...
I whipped up a logo design for a client and they love it. I
    just eyeballed
on-screen colors and told them that they'll have to sit down
    with the
Pantone Swatch book and pick the specific colors they want to
    use.
They ended up matching the swatches to the on-screen colors I
    picked and
    that's what I used.
I then created a PDF (press optimized) of said FH file. Now
    the colors look
completely different on-screen (though, obviously, they are
    the correct
pantone colors and as long as the printer isn't an idiot,
    they'll look fine
    on the t-shirts).
The question I have is why do on-screen matched pantone
    colors not actually
    match on screen when used?
    -Darrel

As you requested Darrel, here is my best answer to this
    question. (I
didn't answer before because I'm not 100% able to back up my
    answer with
facts and typically leave it up people who are.)
The colors are not matching simply because all applications
    render
colors differently. I can open up the same PDF in Acrobat 4
    and 8 as
well as Preview and get three different color schemes. Each
    program has
it's own method of rendering colors on screen. Now you
    transfer that
same PDF to someone else's computer with a different monitor,
    different
video card and different operating system and you've got a
    real mess.
There is not guaranteed way to deliver color on screen. If
    you spend
some money and a lot of time you may be able to get FreeHand,
    Photoshop
and your desktop printer to agree (more or less) but you can
    forget
    about much else.
Moral of the story? Never buy clothes online that you haven't
    seen in
    person.
    Rich
P.S. Even on press, Pantone or process, you are going to get
    color
variations. If you are printing a t-shirt it better be white,
    because
the colors will vary just by virtue of the color they are
    printed on and
even just LOOK different because of the color next to it.

  • 3 Questions - Switch Answers / PDF Button / Finder Display

    Hi,
I have three questions. I just upgraded to Leopard, and it is great but I am wondering about three things.
First, when a question window comes up like, "Do you really want to close this tab?" is there a keyboard shortcut to select the answer that is not highlighted?
Second, Is there a way to add a download page as PDF to Safari? So you don't have to go to print first.
Third, Is there anyway to keep different parts of Finder in a different view mode? I always left my HD in list view, and everything else in the regular icon view. Can Leopard do this too?
    Thanks!

    1) If there is only one other button, USUALLY "Command-." (period) will close the window and select the NON highlighted button.
    2) I'm not getting this one--can you explain another way?
3)Yes! You can set preferences for every folder separately. Open up the window you want to set up options for. Select "Show View Options" (Command-J) from the View menu. Familiarize yourself with the options here.
What I did was pick set up some spacing issues, icon size, label position, and finder info and clicked "Use as Defaults" as a first step. Do this for options that you want for every folder--it will save you having to do it to a bunch.
Next, open a folder you want to customize. You can just keep that "Show view Options" window open (or open it again if you closed it). Set the options however you want them for this folder. Notice at the top of the window is a check box that says "Always open in XXXX view" where XXXX is the view you currently have it in. Check that box when you get it to the one you want. This option overrides the default you set up earlier.
Next time you go there. Voila!

  • Question about reducing PDF file size on export

I have a large file that is generates a PDF about 75MB when exported with the "[High Quality Print]" preset. However, I can reduce the size down to to under 5MG in Acrobat if I use the Tools>Flattener Preview>[Medium Resolution] setting (image attached). Is there a way to generate this smaller file directly from InDesign? I couldn't figure out how to do this with InDesign's Flattener Preview or Export options, but it is very likely that I missed something.

    Eugene Tyson wrote:
When you choose Smallest File size, it is still using the PDF 1.6 setting.
Change this to Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) this will automagically flatten the PDF - which means you shouldn't have to do it in Acrobat.
That should get you a nice small file size, I believe.
Flattening transparency in InDesign will not necessarily yield a smaller PDF file size. Transparency flattening will not automatically convert placed vector artwork to raster images unless that vector artwork is actually involved with transparency. And even then, whether you end up with a smaller file depends on a number of factors.
If the reason for the very large file size is indeed very complex vector artwork and you are willing to sacrifice quality, conversion of such vector artwork to raster might yield a significantly smaller exported PDF file. To accomplish that conversion, I would personally suggest converting the most offensive (in terms of file size and complexity) of such files in Illustrator (assuming that they were .AI files) and exporting them as .TIF files (to avoid the potential imaging artifacts of JPEG compression).

  • Question re Create PDF from Word doc

    Hi
I am trying to create a pdf from a Word document (Word 2007, Acrobat 8 Professional), and am having lots of trouble with images, fonts and document overhead. With the fonts, i generate the PDF by saying Create Pdf from the plugin in Word. I specify in the Preferences that fonts are not to be embedded. I then open the PDF and access PDF Optimiser -> Audit Space Usage, and it says that fonts take up like 20% of the document, however there are only like 10 lines of text in Arial (9pt), and 6 titles also in Arial (Bold). I dont understand why Font is taking up so much space considering that i have elected not to embed fonts (if i go to the Fonts section in the Optimiser, it shows both embedded and unembedded panes blank).
With the images, i have 2 jpegs in the footer, that are compressed (JPEG -> Low). The other thing i am struggling with is the headers and footers, if i generate the PDF from the Word doc with Headers/Footers, then images take up over 15% of the document. Not sure if there is a way to add headers and footers within minimum impact of filesize? I have tried checking everything in the 3 categories of Dicard Objects, Discard User data and Clean Up. but the Document Overhead remains at 35%.
What else can i do to get these filesizes reduced?I have been researching this for days and have not come across anything that has helped.I have tried to PDF print, i have changed the font to like Courier, ensured no thumbnails or bookmarks, ensured JPEGs are not embedded in the doc, tried Save As, Save As under a different filename - basically anthing you can find on the net i have found and tried, but still cant fix this!!!! please, if anyone knows acrobate 8 better than me / or knows what the problem is, please advise????
    Thanks very much.

The colors and size in a graphic needs to be done in a graphics editor. What type of editor would depend on the use of vector graphics versus bitmap. Sometimes vector graphics are larger than bitmaps if you are using a lot of lines that would display better as just a splotch of color. Such are the variations between vector and bitmap graphics, but important if you are looking for size reduction. For a bitmap, I would do the sizing and color depth with IrfanView, but you should be able to do that with PhotoShop if you have it. Vector graphics can be adjusted in Illustrator. The size of vector graphics is not an issue since they are scalable, but the size of a bitmap is important since your are looking at individual pixels and that depends on size. The point is that if you can adjust the color depth and size for the desired pixel resolution, the bitmap is optimized for the conversion to PDF from WORD.
As I mentioned, the smallest file size job options should minimize font storage in the PDF. Checking with the PDF Optimizer does not always give you all of the fonts. I am not sure why. It is better to check the font tab in the document properties to see what has been embedded. There is a preflight macro to embed fonts, you might check to see if there is one to delete fonts (I have not checked on that). Sometimes you can play with the reprint of a PDF, but that is not an option that is generally recommended, particularly if you have any tagging or such. Of course, tagging can really bloat a PDF, but is needed for a variety of reasons such as format for saving back to WORD (not a great workflow), accessability, and related issues. In another topic, there is some discussion of the purposes of tagging and bookmarks. However, the tags and bookmarks take space if that is really an issue for you. The latter are avoided if you use the print to the Adobe PDF printer and do not use PDF Maker in the PDF creation process. Again, there is a trade-off here in terms of size and functionality, particularly accessibility compliance.
Not sure I am helping as I run on, but sort what might be useful for you.

  • Question about overwriting PDFs

I'm having a problem overwriting PDFs from InDesign or Illustrator.
This isn't the same issue people are having where they're prompted that the file cannot be overwritten. I can save over the file no problem. The issue is when I open it, the old version comes up. Funny enough, the thumbnail preview in Finder actually shows the correct version, but the file itself is incorrect.
I've tried deleting the PDF and saving a new version. Because of my workflow, I have to keep all versions that are sent out named and numbered properly in sequence. So when I name it the same way the old one was named, the old version still shows up!
I'm really not sure if this is an Adobe Acrobat problem, a Creative Suite problem, or an Apple problem.
Just some info on what I am using if it helps: Adobe Creative Suite 6 on an iMac with OS X 10.9.2.
Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds more like a systemic problem with your file system and the resource forks are not updated. You should check your volumes with Disk Utility or use tools like OnyX to check for system problems.
