Question of the ages...ProRes or native?

I need the pros to guide me. Just beginning a new project ( 26 weeks) and I want the to do it correctly and have always been confused on what codec to use in the timeline. All my footage is XDCAM HD (HQ) 35. I have a Kona 3 card installed on 8 core MacPro. I am file based using the Sony XDCAM transfer program. Love it, no problems. Now, do I capture using the XDCAM HD 60VBR codec or ProRes HQ? I cannot get a good answer from my vender and need guidance from the forums. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.
Best,
Tom

I imagine that native is just fine as long as it's a 10 bit capture and recording. If not, then ProRes is the way to go. ProRes might render faster in any event... Might capture a bit as each, then do some serious render only effect, and see the difference if there is any in time. If it's an 8 bit codec though, (not sure it isn't) then ProRes will be better with any element that wasn't shot by the camera like graphics, photos etc... You won't hurt nor help the video from the camera per se, but you might find faster renders and better looking graphics if you go the prores route. Files will likely be a bit larger in ProRes...

  • Question Of The Ages:-)

I have been curious about this for a while and thought i would put it to you guys because there is probably an obvious answer that I am not seeing!
I have multiple macs at my disposal and for years now have had the same problem with any of them...
Whether I am using FCE4 or any version of Imovie the same thing occurs..when I make a movie and send it to IDVD and burn it...I can eject it and put it right back in the machine and it will give me a message saying "not readable by this computer" but you can put it into any DVD player and it works fine!
why in the **** won't the computer that you created the DVD on play it back????
am really interested in your input:-)

    Hi
I think there are more to this.
    • DVD brand - I only use Verbatim (Never Ever Memorex)
    • DVD type - I use DVD-R (no DVD+R or +/-RW)
    • Burn speed - I set it down to x4 or x1 (less burn errors)
    • Free space on internal boot hard disk - never under 25Gb - iDVD can't address any
other for it's scratch files niether can Mac OS
    • The DVD-Burner - If I understands it right it has TWO lasers or at least laser-lenses
    one burn and one read.
Try Using a DVD-cleaning Disk - May be it just got dirty.

  • The case for integrated, native physics in the Flash Runtime

    Hello everyone,
As hopefully many of you know, a community based feature request page was created a few months back (Feature request for Flash and Air - uplist) and we've had a number of great ideas added and voted on.  In an attempt to better understand the individual requests, we thought we'd start threads on particular subjects to allow us to ask questions and get community feedback.  These posts should not be taken as a commitment to a particular feature (or lack of commitment to any other feature.)  I can't stress this enough.   I don't want anyone to think that we're ignoring other requests or to assume that because we're asking about something, they can expect to see this done in a future release.  We simply want to better understand the request so that we can reduce the number of assumptions on our part.
To start, let's we've got a few questions regarding the request for "Integrated (native) physics" which currently has 142 votes.
When talking about physics, are you interested in a 2D or 3D physics engine?
Can you list native engines that demonstrate the features you want the Flash runtime to implement natively?
For instance, if you're interested in Box2D functionality, have you tried http://www.box2dflash.org?
Is there a huge performance gap between the native and ActionScript implementations of Box2D?
Are you looking for solutions for desktop or mobile?
    Thanks,
    Chris

I'm all for the addition of a native physics system, based on Box2D, that gives us native speed.
But, I'd also like to suggest that you make sure that you are committed to polishing and improving the new API's, and not leave them stranded at v 1.0.
For example, GameInput API is rife with bugs, and there seems to be no interest or pro-activeness on the part of Adobe to fix them. Zeh Fernando has put in a ton of work in standardizing the GameInput API, and he has been quite vocal about the issues, and as far as I know, no one from Adobe seems to care at all.
Here's a link to his gitHub repo, where he lists current issues with the API:
    zeh/key-action-binder · GitHub
know that Flash's GameInput API is still severely ridden with bugs. You may run into some of them. Here's some more information.
Supported devices are not detected properly when added or removed (Bug #3709110): no workaround
Using GameInput add Timer overhead every second in Windows (Bug #3660823): no workaround
GameInput devices simply stop working when running on Android/OUYA: need to initialize things in the first frame of SWF (fixed in AIR 13.0.0.36/Flash Player 13.0.0.130?)
Quick button presses may not be properly detected on Macs (Bug #3702039): no workaround (need to test sampling rate changes and if button activation can always be assumed from the up event)
In addition to those, I have run into a major bug on nVidia Shield, creating huge lag in inputs. The bug is nearly 12mths old, and is very severe:
Bug#3673122 - Shield controller massive lag
I'd love to see the AIR team being much more pro-active about bug fixing. It seems to be like pulling teeth sometimes to actually get something fixed. I would think that the team, after putting in a big effort to implement GameInput in the first place, would be extremely pro-active in seeking out feedback and fixing the bugs in the first 3-6mths since release, to harden the API, but instead no one seems to care, and the onus is all on us to "file a bug report and vote", which seems code for "might get fixed, one day, maybe"
We love AIR so much because of it's consistency, but new API's need to be as consistent as old ones, and need constant iteration and improvement as well. I know it's flashier to add a new bullet point to the marketing check list, but consistency and reliability are much more important in this chaotic and fragmented landscape.

  • How can I change the age associated with my daughter's account?

OK I am sure that this is a common issue.  Back when my daughter was about 9 or 10 years old, we bought her an iPod Touch.   She was too young to have an AppleID of her own, so I set one up for her using an extra gmail accoun that I had, and entered my birthdate/age.  A few years later, she received an iPad, and most recently, an iPhone.   All of these devices are tied to the same AppleID.
Well, now she will be 13 years old soon, and I would like to switch things to represent reality.  She has her own email account, and I believe you can go to My Apple Id to change the Apple ID name and e-mail address.  My question is, can we change the age associated with the account?
I hear you saying, "Just create a new AppleID for her."  That may end up being the only solution, but I am trying to avoid having two AppleIDs for her to keep up with.  She has already purchased a fair amount of content (music and apps) under the existing AppleID, and I am pretty sure from looking at the posts on this Community that you can not transfer content away from the AppleID under which it was downloaded/purchased.  And so, if I create a new AppleID, she will have to re-purchase the content to get it all in one place.  As she eventually grows up and becomes independent, I would like for he to not have to "start over" with her AppleID.
Any advice or direction to information would be appreciated.

I have a similar situation however a bit more complicated! It seems that when I was setting the birthdate I forgot to change the year so now my seven years old daughter shows up as a two months old! There is no way to change the birthdate because it shows up in light grey when I login into my daughters account and doesn't allow a change! The birthdate can be changed only when the child turns 13 however according to this she will have to be 20 before she can change it to show property 13 and here is where this is getting completely out of hand! Now to make things more complicated I have twin daughters and they came up with their unique but similar Apple ID, so changing one will require to change both Apple IDs! After being on the phone with Apple's customer support for about one hour I talked to a supervisor and the supervisor of the supervisor and their only solution is to create a new Apple ID! Of course in my case I will have to create two new Apple IDs, and I'm considering doing it. However when I started reading it becomes more complicated because I already made their Apple IDs part of my family group. It seems like you're not able to just let go of family member that is less than 13 years of age. You can only transfer it to another family, so Apple is making sure there are no kids left behind It seems like the only option will be to "abandon" the family and then create a new family with the new Apple IDs. If all this sounds bizarre to you it sounds bizarre to me too! If I can just put the kids in the car and drive them to the nearest one hour away Apple Store and have them show their credentials confirming their birthdate I would rather do that than having to spend more and more time with this issue, but that was not an option pointed out by customer support. So folks keep in mind that if you make a mistake your children's age is set in stone until he or she turns 20 if they happen to be seven at the time you made the mistake and no one can change this, even Apple! Now on the positive side I'm glad I didn't do the mistake when she was 13 or she will have to wait until she's 26 Most likely I'll be calling customer support tomorrow again and I will let you know how it went!

  • Can I report on the AGE of open Work Items? How? Group into Buckets?

Is there a way to report on the age of open work items?
Perhaps a bar graph that has several buckets.
    a.    Over 364
    b.    180 to 364
    c.    90 to 179
    d.    1 to 89
And then a COUNT in each bucket.
For example, if a Work Item is open longer than 364 day, it would appear in bucket "a" as a count of 1.  Say there are a total of 45 Work Items that were opened older than 364 days, then "45" would appear in column "a" now say that there are 100 work items open that are 1 to 89 days old, then 100 would appear in the "d" bucket.
Make sense?  How can I report like this?

    Hi mrpeepers,
You can use following MDX script when you create this report that uses TfsOlapReportDS
    with
    member [Measures].[Age]
    As
    IIF([Measures].[Current Work Item Count]>0,DateDiff("d",cdate([System_CreatedDate].[Date].CurrentMember .name),Now()),null)
    member [Measures].[AgeRange]
    as
    case
    when [Measures].[Age] >70 then 70
    when [Measures].[Age] >60 then 60
    when [Measures].[Age] >50 then 50
    when [Measures].[Age] >40 then 40
    when [Measures].[Age] >30 then 30
    when [Measures].[Age] >20 then 20
    when [Measures].[Age] >10 then 10
    when [Measures].[Age] >0 then 0
    when [Measures].[Age] <0 then -1
    else null
    end
     SELECT
     non empty
     {[Measures].[Current Work Item Count],[Measures].[Age] ,[Measures].[AgeRange]}
     ON COLUMNS,
     [System_CreatedDate].[Date].[Date].AllMembers on Rows
     FROM [Current Work Item]
And then, drop a Chart to report designer, select “Current_Work_Item_Count” as datafield,  AgeRange as category field.

  • AR - Customer Statement - differences when compared with the Aging report

I am running the customer statement (the Print Statement program) 'as of date' say 11-Jun-09, and found that the 'Total Amount Due' for a customer is not agreeing back to the balance displayed on the Aging Screen (Navigation: Collections -> Customer Accounts [Aging butto]) for the customer.
The 'Total Amount Due' on the statement is greater than the balance on the aging report/screen.
It appears that the statement is selecting more receivables transactions (invoices, credit note, payments etc...) than the aging report is looking at. Also the aging buckets on the statement does not tie back to that on the aging screen /report for example the '4 Bucket Aging Report'.
    My questions are:
1, Is it possible for the 'Total Amout Due' on the statement to differ from the balance on the aging report/screen?
2, What factors or reasons might cause the above senario to occur?
3, How can one start to investigate this in order to account for such differences?
Ideally what I would like to do is run a sql script that will show what is being selected for the statement 'as of' a particular date for a customer, and another sql that will show the same customer account balance and aging buckets at the same 'as of' date.
And perhaps another sql that would show the same customer open receivable transactions.
    Thanks.

    Hello.
This query will show you the customer open receivable transactions:
    select c.customer_name,
decode(ps.class, 'PMT', 'Payment', 'INV', 'Invoice', 'DM', 'Debit Memo', 'CM', 'Credit Memo') Type,
    ps.trx_number,
    ps.trx_date "Inv Date",
    ps.due_date "Due Date",
    ps.acctd_amount_due_remaining "Amount Remaining"
    from ar_payment_schedules_all ps,
    ra_customers c
    where c.customer_id = ps.customer_id
    and ps.status = 'OP'
    and ps.org_id = &orgID
    and c.customer_number = &CustNumber

  • Apple Outreach to the Aging Community?

    Hello,
My mother in law is an intellectually active 80 year old who is, although sharp and an avid reader, never the less extremely intimidated by technology.
My wife and I are concerned that she is becoming increasingly isolated by her age, the demands of caring for her husband, an the challenges
    of getting around.
We think that getting her on line might significantly enrich and improve the quality of her life, as well as the life of her husband, but she has rebuffed our efforts to get her on line because the interfaces scare her, and I suspect that she doesn't want to be made to feel foolish.
Apple certainly was successful with their college and high school outreach program to get young people accustomed to the Apple environment, and has been successful at marketing Apple products as being more intuitive than their competitors, so it seems that Apple's emphasis on intuitive design would make Apple products particularly attractive to aging people.  The aging people cohort might even offer a good beta testing opportunity for Apple, but that's a larger question.
My mother in law and her husband live by themselves a considerable distance from family, so I was wondering whether Apple or any of the Apple Communities have ever mounted a geriatric outreach effort to introduce aging people to the Apple internet and communications environment.  If so, I would appreciate any information that anyone could offer in this regard.
I would also appreciate any information that anyone might be able to offer regarding any similar internet/computer outreach programs for the aging or geriatric communities offered by educational or research institutions, or social service organizations, particularly in the Atlanta, Georgia area, where my mother in law and her husband live.
I submit this query to the MacBook Air and iPad support communities, as I thought that the MacBook Air or iPad might be logical hardware platform for aging people due to their light weight and portability, but I am open to other suggestions.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Charlie

  • Some questions on the inner workings of Stellent IBPM 7.6

    Hello,
I'm having some trouble figuring out a Stellent IBPM 7.6 installation at one of our customers' sites.
I must admit that I am completely new to IBPM, but since our customer was unable to find anyone who still supported this software,
they have asked me to find out whether it is possible to make a small change.
They are using it to archive tiff files + metadata (in text files) exported by Kofax.
I was unable to find any documentation on version 7.6, but I was able to find an administrator's guide of Oracle Imaging and Process Management 7.7, which I have been using so far.
    So here's the thing;
I've largely been able to figure out how the whole Filer Server works, how it's configured, how applications are defined in the Application Definition editor,
how meta data and image files get stored based on the defined indexes/fields and storage classes,
how galleries are made, how users are linked to them and how searches can be built using the Search Builder.
So far so good. I understand how the current setup is functioning.
But what I haven't been able to find in the documentation that I posses,
is how the system deals with any changes made to this setup.
More specifically: changes made to the definition of indexes and fields.
The main questions I have at this moment are:
    - How does the database, specified under "output" in the application definition editor, get constructed?
Does this have to be done manually? And do you just have to name tables and columns exactly as you specify them in the Application Definition?
Or will a new table automatically be created when I define a new application?
I assume it will, because I noticed that the names of the tables in the database are <Application Name>+<Index Name>.
But I haven't been able to find any piece of information on this, and I don't want to base any actions on assumptions.
    - Is it possible to add a field to an application that has already been online and filed?
And also in this case; what happens to the output database? Do columns get added automatically or is this a manual step?
I hope that despite the age of this software, someone will still be able to answer these question or point me to some documentation that I have missed.
    Kind regards,
    Wouter

    To answer the questions:
#1   An interrupt service routine (ISR) running a lower IRQL may be interrupted by another ISR running at a higher level.
#2   Having never heard of a thread interrupt, all I can say here is that a thread may be pre-empted for a lot of reasons.
#3   An ISR does not have to schedule a DPC unless it needs to do work that it cannot do at high IRQL.
#4   Assuming that the Write and IOCTL are on seperate queues, yes you need a a lock to protect shared resources.
#5   As the name implies kernel dispatcher objects allow scheduling (i.e. dispatching of another thread), while things like spinlocks do not.
#6    Timers are just another dispatching object, i.e. one can wait on them the same way one waits on a mutex or a semaphore.  A WDF TIMER is basically a wrapper around a regular timer to take care of some of the housekeeping (particularily
with respect to stopping the driver etc)
#7     If a routine is running at DISPATCH_LEVEL you are limited to spin locks for synchronization. You can with a zero timeout check the status of a kernel dispatcher object.   In general, routines like this should be
    designed to only use spinlocks.
#8    An arbitrary thread is just that, it may be a thread in any process. Basically a currently running thread is grabed and used to run the interrupt so that the scheduler which has overhead and is not designed to run at interrupt level
IRQL's does not need to run.

  • Career in SAP - PS at the age of 42. Advice needed.

    Hi,
I need some suggestions as I am considering making career transition to SAP u2013 PS. I live in the US so I will be pursuing my career in this country. Hereu2019s my background info:
I am a PMP certified and ITIL V3 Foundation certified Sr. Project Manager. I am 42 years old and I have over 15 years of IT experience. Also, I started working on my PMI-Agile certification (PMI-ACP). I work as a consultant.
My expertise is in managing from small to large development and functional projects, process improvement, data management, data strategy, liaison between IT staff and business clients, process Improvement, Software Development Life Cycle, Risks and Issues management, Business Analysis, Software Requirements, Technical Solutions, Time Estimating, Work/ Resource Breakdown Structure, Project Scheduling and Budgeting, Strategic Planning and Solutions, MS Project etc.
Prior to project management, I had strong technical background in Data warehouse, data migration, Database architecture, design, development, performance tuning etc. primarily in Oracle and SQL Server, Business objects, UNIX etc. I have around 13 years of Oracle and Unix experience.
After discussion with several training institutions, they said that SAP u2013 PS is the best option to start SAP career. My questions are:
    - Is it good idea to make a career transition to SAP at the age of 42 in USA?
    - I am at a senior level of my career. Will I be considered an entry level if I start SAP career or will my prior experience be given some credit?
    - My goal is to continue consulting for a few more years and then take a permanent (non- consulting) career. I want to stop travelling on the job. I know a few SAP professionals and they all have a travelling job. Are there good positions in SAP (Manager or director level) that do not involve a lot of travel?
    - Other than SAP-PS, what other functional areas of SAP will be worth looking into?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Is it good idea to make a career transition to SAP at the age of 42 in USA?
It is never too late to start over or make a transition in your career. I know somebody who at 40 transitioned from a manufacturing area to become a BASIS consultant.
I am at a senior level of my career. Will I be considered an entry level if I start SAP career or will my prior experience be given some credit?
With your kind of experience and background, you will fit the bill of a Project Manager. Good knowledge in SAP PS will just be a "good-to-have" item on your resume.
My goal is to continue consulting for a few more years and then take a permanent (non- consulting) career. I want to stop travelling on the job. I know a few SAP professionals and they all have a travelling job. Are there good positions in SAP (Manager or director level) that do not involve a lot of travel?
Yes most SAP Consultants travel a lot. But it depends on the kind of organization you work for. A purely consulting company will demand frequent travelling. But if you work for a product company or if your company is the "client" then the travel is minimal.
Other than SAP-PS, what other functional areas of SAP will be worth looking into?
As I said earlier, you do not have to get your hands dirty with the various modules in SAP. For your experience you can oversee the work done by others. But yes, always better to have a good command in the module. PS module is one of the most robust and "complete" modules in SAP. It is probably the only module that is in some way or the other connected to all the core modules in SAP - MM, SD, FI, WM.... you name it.
So to sum up, if you have a great command over PS, then you pretty much know a thing or two (considering the oceanic size) in SAP.

  • A question about the "Third-Party Root Certification Authorities" X509 store

    Hello All
Can someone please help me with the following question.
Reading some MS documentation I see MS have a program called 'Microsoft Root Certification Program" where by if a third party ACME for example create a Root CA and it passes this program then MS will add the CA Cert to Windows Update for downloading
to the clients "Third-Party Root Certification Authorities" X509 store, correct so far?
if so when a client is building a certificate chain for a cert I understand it first checks its local store for relevant certificates (e.g. Trusted Root Certification Authorities etc..) then if not their checks the AIA extension so locate the cert.
Question does the client (e.g. clients using CAPI/CAPI2) also check the "Third-Party Root Certification Authorities" X509 store or do the Certs in this logical store also reside (get copied to) the "Third-Party Root Certification
Authorities" X509 store. In other words are these store names in the GUI just logical partitions for human viewing  but actually reside in the same location in the registry and therefore checked by the client

yes. Trusted Root CAs container is an aggregated container for all trusted root CAs (for natively trusted CAs and for Root Certification Program members).

  • Question about the new iMac

Please Note: I am extremely sorry if this is placed in the wrong location. It says to post here if it doesn't fit the other categories.
Now I asked before about the Mac Mini, the features and etc... Well since I saw the August keynote and the new iMovie you guys presented, it made me want to start making the Mac as my new computer. The thing is, I am short on cash and have a few question between the First and Second versions.
    1. My new computer will probably have to last 5-7 years, and I need to know, will the cheapest iMac be able to actually go that far? I mean I have read how some mac's that were purchased about that time still run perfectly good today.
    2. Since Leopard will have bootcamp fully integrated and Windows can run at native speed, Will games like WoW (of course this is only an example, I know they have a mac version) run really good on it?
    3. Say I buy my Mac in a retailer such as Best Buy, how will I go about a Hard Drive upgrade? I saw you can upgrade the memory, but they mentioned nothing as to a Hard Drive upgrade.
    4. If I want to actually customize my mac (because if theres no way to upgrade in question 3...) can I do it by going to a Apple Store or do I have to order online?
    5. Would 1 GB of ram be good or will I have to upgrade later to 2 GB to run good?
    6. So in the longer run, would buying the 2.4 GHz Mac be better for a 5-7 year term or will the 2.0 GHz version do just as fine. (Please keep in mind that cash is hard to get... It might be until March until I purchase... This will give me an idea.)
I just want to make a good decision when buying a Mac and get rid of this trouble maker I have now.. Of course going with a Mac is already a good decision.
    Thanks and waits for reply.

    Hello darkpontiac
My you have lots of questions, so I'll cover as many as I can.
This is as good a place as any to ask about the iMac's.
Look at this link and you will see the you can have an iMac and make payments.
    "The Apple Store"
    1. I would buy the best from the upper end and Apple Care to get the longest life from it.
    2. I don't run WoW, but others have reported that it runs fine even on the Early Core Duo Intel iMac's.
    3. You can order a larger HD from Apple, look dow at "Configure-to-order options" in this link.
    Intel iMac Spec's
    4. Yes see #3 then up grade the ram yourself up to 4GB on the new models.
    5. 2 GB of ram is great for most users, the current is shipped with 1GB and you can upgrade in steps of 2, 3 and 4 GB later if you wish.
    6. Yes
Sorry it took me so long to respond, but I'm printing out some vacation photo's from iPhoto for the wife, jumping to e-mail back and forth with daughter, downloading some new CD's I just bought and replying to your post all at the same time on this 20 month old Early Core Duo with 2GB of ram. It's not having any trouble at all playing my loud classic rock with iTunes, but I'm working like h...!
    Hope that Helps!

  • Codec Question for the Mac...

Background: I use Premiere Pro infrequently since I also own Final Cut Express and only need Premiere when I am doing something I shot in 24p mode - since FCE doesn't support frame rates other than 29.97 and 25.
    Computer Specs:
Apple Mac Mini (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz, 4 Gig RAM, 1 TB FireWire 400 drive as scratch)
So far I have tried bringing in the native AVCHD files and playing them back - and I get jumpy and unusable playback (I know this is to be expected).  I also tried using the QuickTime files that use Apple Intermediate Codec and Uncompressed Audio, and I get worse playback.
When I pull up activity monitor I see "ImportProcessServer" running at full torque - which leads me to believe that although Premiere supports both formats without transcoding, my little Mac Mini just doesn't have the power to do it in real time.
My question - is there another codec that I could transcode my content to that would not require the ImportProcessServer to be running?  Put another way, is there a native codec for Adobe that would be less processor intensive than AVCHD so I could edit content.  I have Adobe Media Encoder so I have some flexibility as far as codecs.
    Thanks!
    - Brian
PS - As for "why don't you just get final cut studio" - I need Blu-ray authoring capability and don't want to spend more than I need must.

I figured out a solution and figured I'd post it for future reference should someone else have the same problem.
What I realized was that I needed to transcode my content from AVCHD (which was too demanding for my Mini inside of Encore - other apps can play it fine for the record) into a native codec that wouldn't be as demanding?  My solution - MPEG-2.  Transcoding into MPEG-2 at 30 Mbps allowed me to preserve most of the original quality (some was lost, but when you're starting with 17 Mbps H.264 allowing for 30 Mbps MPEG-2 seemed about right) while editing the file inside of Premiere Pro without difficulty.  The other bonus is that the in the process of transcoding I could remove the 3:2 pulldown inserted by the camera.

  • Apple Outreach for the Aging Community?

    Hello,
My mother in law is an intellectually active 80 year old who is, although sharp and an avid reader, extremely intimidated by technology.
Apple certainly was successful with their college and high school outreach program to get young people accustomed to the Apple environment, and has been successful at marketing Apple products as being more intuitive than their competitors.
My mother in law and her husband live by themselves a considerable distance from any family, so I was wondering whether Apple or any of the Apple Communities have ever mounted a geriatric outreach effort to introduce aging people to the Apple internet and communications environment.  If so, I would appreciate any information that anyone could offer in this regard.  I would appreciate any information that anyone might be able to offer regarding any similar internet/computer outreach programs for the aging or geriatric communities offered by educational or research institutions, or social service organizations.
I submit this query to the iPad support community, as I thought that iPad might be a logical hardware platform for aging people due to its light weight, but I am open to other suggestions.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Charlie

Those are big questions, from the specific to  univeral.
    1. Trying to hook someone up to technology who is 80 and is [still] intimidated by consumer computer technology... remember that the technology has been around since that person was in her 40s so there was never sufficient motivation to get her started.
You might take an activity she enjoys daily,  solitaire or crosswords can be done in a different and perhaps more convenient form.   If she is a reader, show her a Kindle or iPad reader app. Then feed her other stuff. Everyone here will have different  suggestions to hook someone.
The trick is getting her motivated to adopt it herself: "what's in it for me?" * is her unspoken question and will be your guiding light.
    2. Regarding geriatric outreach, try searching for government or university sites regarding access to senior citizens. e.g.
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  ipad site:gov or
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  health site:gov
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  Kindle readers site:gov
Or do same for state or county or government library programs. Libraries have preached and practiced community outreach for years.  Best wishes.
"what's in it for me?" is also the question on the part of tech industry and your "geriatrics" audience.
Answer that and you will have built a better mousetrap.
