Question on buying a phone outright to keep my unlimited Verizon contract.

Howdy I have a contract that I've had for about 8+ years its totally unlimited.
My old DroidX is on it's last leg.
Verizon wants me to buy a new phone and contract, limiting my limits.
I seldom reach their minimum basic account, they say I don't need unlimited, but my contract cost me the same amount out of my pocket as their lowest plan.
They say they want to take away the unlimited beczause it slows everyone down.
I say Bunk!
I seldom reach high numbers, so how can my long term customer history be a problem for them.
Let me keep my plan, so just incase I need it, after all it's the same price, short pennies one way or the other.
they told me I could buy a phone outright, but at thier store its upto $700 for whats on thier shelves.
Ok so that said, How and where, and what phone can and will work. The DroidX is on on a 3G service plan, can a 4G phone still be placed on this plan.
I searched sights, and found Verizon phones for around $200, that are like NOS form a year or so ago, but can I actually just buy one and activate it to my account?
I'm terribly in the dark and confused, and frustrated to be told I have to do what they want now.
We signed a Contract, I've never missed a payment, I've kept my end of the bargian, bla bla bla
Thanks for any and all help

Hi there T_O_A_D-
Welcome to the Best Buy forums!
It certainly sounds like you have a great set up with your current contract with Verizon and I completely understand why you’d want to keep it based on your current usage.  I’ll be honest, I’m no expert when it comes to mobile phone contracts and what’s available out there any longer (my wife handles ours..
However, it does seem like more and more companies are restricting the ability to have unlimited data unless you are signing up for a new contract with them (along with an accompanying new phone).  I’ve requested that one of our Super Users, who is a mobile phone expert, come on to this post and offer his opinion (MMaier is his name).  Hopefully he will be on pretty quickly to give you some advice.  Otherwise, I would also suggest contacting your nearest Best Buy and speaking with one of our Best Buy Mobile agents as well.
Thanks for posting and welcome to the conversation!

  • Service discount when buying a phone outright

Looking into the possibility that we will change our service plan to this MORE EVERYTHING stuff and I saw the nice discount that was offered to EDGE participants. For two of the lines, we already have newer Moto Xs and the other three that we would be adding we would just buy outright when we converted to the new plan. So based on that information, and what I gleaned from the MORE EVERYTHING FAQs page, we wouldn't get the $25 per line, per month discount.
Just trying to understand why when we are not buying subsidized phones, that we wouldn't be getting some type of discount on the price of the plan.

If you move to (or are on) the MoreEverything plan - any smartphone line not on a contract because you bought the devices outright, or have completed the 2 yr agreement IS eligible for the monthly discount.

  • HT4528 I currently use Verizon and have a Blackberry with an unlimited data plan. Is there a way I can buy an unlocked iphone and keep my unlimited data plan bypassing Verizon's requirement to get a new plan with a 2 year committment?

Is there a way to purchase a new iPhone and to continue my unlimited data plan without having to sign a new 2 year committment and new plan with Verizon?

You don't buy an unlocked phone. You buy a Verizon iPhone at full retail. I just did this myself last month. I paid full retail for the phone and activated it on my plan. This allowed me to get a new phone before I was eligible to upgrade and keep my unlimited data. I also got a good deal on trading in my iPhone 5.
You can buy the phone through Verizon or through Apple. If you buy it through Apple, I'd suggest that you not have them activated but do that yourself by logging into your account on your computer.
    Best of luck.

  • How to keep the Unlimited verizon data plan when upgrading to iphone 4s?

How can I keep my unlimited data plan when upgrading to a IPHONE 4s???
I tried everything!!! I have an apple giftcard so I want to use it through apple.com but It wont let me keep my unlimited data plan

The terms of your data/phone plan are solely determined by your carrier, in this case Verizon.  It is up to them if they wish to allow consumers to carry over the existing terms of their plan.  Hence, the thing you need to do is contact Verizon customer service and ask them to carry your terms over with your upgrade.  I'm hoping if you ask nicely they may do it.
    Hope this helps

  • Can I buy a phone verizon pay as you go and use it on my verizon contract?

My verizon wireless broke and I don't have insurance and I'm six months before I can qualify to renew a contract, so I'm stocked in trying to get a second hand phone, but I saw the same model of my broken phone selling in flea bay from the verizon pay as you go. My question is, can I use one of those phones to be activated on my verizon? I would hate to buy the phone and later find out that verizon won't activate it.

You can also view the eligibility requirements of our Certified Pre Owned Program at the link below. This program helps:
If your device is lost, stolen or damaged and you are not enrolled in Total Equipment Coverage or Wireless Phone Protection, you can purchase a Certified Pre-Owned Replacement device to replace your original device.

  • Do I have to pay the upgrade fee if I buy my phone from apple?

I can't find anywhere where the upgrade fee is explained fully. I know if I buy my phone from apple, it is a "verizon" phone -- will they charge me the upgrade fee, will verizon charge it when I activate the phone, or does it not apply if I buy it via the apple store?

If you are buying the phone at full price (or Verizon EDGE), there won't be any upgrade fee.  If you are getting a subsidized phone (2-year contract) there will be an upgrade fee.

  • Buying a phone from Amazon

I am very displeased with my cell phone, but I do not have an upgrade till next summer. I was looking into buy a phone off of Amazon and having Verizon activate it for my number. I have never done this before and I do not know how to begin. What do I look for?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi jxxafireinside. We definitely want you to be happy with your phone. Feel free to let us know what's going on with your current device that makes you so displeased. I'm sure we can help find a way for you to enjoy your investment.
But if you aren't eligible for an upgrade until next summer, we have a Certified Pre-Owned Program that offers a way for you to get a device directly through Verizon Wireless at a discount with a warranty but without extending your contract or upgrade eligibility. Re: Can I keep my unlimited data plan with this method?

  • Keeping unlimited data buying used phone confusion

Hello, looking for a little help and clarity here if possible. I have an unlimited data plan from years ago and would like to keep it. I have been using one of the first motorola droid phones and it is just way out of date with the 3G. I understand that I can keep my data plan if I pay full price for a new phone or buy a used one from swappa, ebay, etc. I've decided to buy a used phone but I want to make sure that the phone I buy will work properly at 4G while keeping my unlimited data plan. I am mainly confused by CDMA and GSM and HSPA+ and LTE and unlocked etc. I know to buy an official Verizon phone, but when I look at the specs, they all are different. Some use CDMA, some use GSM, some use both. Then there is HSPA+ and LTE Does any of this matter? Will I be able to use any of those phones and upgrade to 4G as well, as long as they have the Verizon stamp? Or is there a specific criteria I need to be aware of in order for everything to go smoothly? I hope the questions make sense.
A little clarity on this is much appreciated, and any other crucial info I might be missing. Just want to make sure I don't make an expensive mistake.
    Thanks so much

Thanks for the detailed reply. I've found that I almost always have signal using Verizon, when friends standing next to me do not using other carriers. Will using a GSM/Verizon phone limit my signal service?
Here are a couple I am looking at. Thanks for taking a look.
The description for both of these say they are factory unlocked...

If the amount of the purchase is close to $21.07, then you need to take into account taxes may be added.
If you go beyond the credit from a gift card the balance will be billed to your credit card account.

  • Have dead phone, cannot sign-in b/c of Secret Question. Plan head is daughter (out of country). No access for plan members and no access if phone dead. Need to learn deals, buy a phone, etc. ADVICE?

HOW CAN I REPLACE MY DEAD PHONE;  BUY A NEW ONE, ADDING TO FAMILY PLAN WHEN I CAN"T EVEN SIGN-IN?
I hope this community can tell me tell how I can  get through the Verizon sign-in process soI can buy a phone to replace my currently dead one.
I am a member of a Family Plan run by my daughter (out of the country for a week)and even with her ID and password, Verizon does not accept my sign-in attempt when I could not answer her Secret Question.   With a dead phone, I cannot get from Verizon including a PIN.  I can use my husband's phone (also in the Familhy Plan) but Verizon does not allow access to anyone but the registered plan administrator.  My phone number-- with decades of phone bills from Verizon --- is "not recognized. "  Huh?
I am so frustrated.  HELP!!  How can I access Verizon:
    --to buy a phone and add to Family plan;
    --delete dead phone from plan;
--learn the gory financial details of a contract, and
--arrange for that new phone to be shipped to me.
I had tried the live chat, but I had to leave the page to locate my daughter's phone number.  Since I never actually type it out, and since it was locked inside my dead phone, I had to reach out to my family so they could look ion their contact phone lists.  And now I cannot regain access Chasmine, my chat person.
I would be grateful for any advice.   I am without a working phone and beginning to believe I shall remain that way.  I would walk away from Verizon except it would work against my family and their contracts.  However,  I have learned just how powerful an essential company can be when it takes advantage of people dependent on its "services."
Meanwhile, the reality is I need to know how to deal with Verizon and get a phone.  All thoughts are welcome and appreciated. I cannot even find a phone number to try to talk to a Verizon person.   Thank you

Youll still have to be the account owner to make those changes.

You can't use icloud to store photos.  There's a service called photo stream which is used to sync photos from one device to another, but this can't be used to store photos permanently.
Always sync photos from a device to your computer,  Then you can delete them from the device.

It's too late for that. Maybe you should consider setting up your next iPhone to backup to iCloud... it happens automatically without user intervention once it's set up. All that's required is a power source for the phone and a WiFi internet connection.
