Question on buying MBP - opinion needed

I currently own a last generation PB (1.67G with 2G RAM) and was thinking if it would worth the $ to upgrade to MBP.
Since my PB is almost running out of capacity (only 15GB left, and it will get used up pretty quick)...also I have a feeling that web browsing performance will no where near a MBP even already I maxed out the RAM.
But, I also heard Leopard 10.5 will be released in October.
Here're some of my Qs:
1. shall I wait until that time and buy one with the 10.5 or get one now and upgrade it later?
2. what's the difference between 2.33 and 2.4GHz besides the processor speed?
3. if you own both PB 1.67 and a MBP (i.e. one w/2.33 or 2.4), do you see a huge difference in speed on web browsing?
4. is there a software out there that works like carbon copy cloner for intel Mac's?
5. last question, is there any way to boot a PPC-cloned OS 10.4 Tiger from MBP? For example, I cloned my PB's OS 10.4 Tiger to a bootable external firewire drive. Is it possible to boot up that drive from a MBP? If not, any solution?
thanks

1. Depends, if you can get by with what you have, then you'll save $129 bucks by waiting.
2. Major difference is the 800 mhz FSB vs 667 mhz fsb, the santa rosa chipset (allows expansion to 4GB of memory) and the graphics chip, Nvidia 6800M GT vs. ati 1600.
On the 15" the backlight is led, on the 17" you get the option of a hi res screen.
3. For universal applications, the MBP will blow away the PB. It has 2 cores giving it 2 processors. As far as web browsing, you probably will see a minor increase in response, but most of the performance of a web browser is limited by internet connection speed, not the computer.
4. Carbon copy clone works for the intel macs.
5. No, the PPC clone doesn't have the needed intel code. But you can use migration assistant to move all of your programs and data files over. It works very good. Also, the new MBP has some OS files that are needed from the original install. I tried to clone a 10.4.10 copy from a Macbook and it failed miserably on the MBP even though the system was 10.4.9 on the MBP.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Start here (change country if necessary) and navigate to 'Password and Security', reset your security questions using the link provided, you will receive an email to your rescue address, use the link in the email and reset your security questions.
If that doesn't help, you don't receive a reset email or you don't have a rescue address, you should contact AppleCare who will initially try to assist you with a reset email or if unsuccessful will pass you to the security team to reset your security questions for you.
If you are in a region that doesn't have international telephone support try contacting Apple through iTunes Store Support.

how do you change your security question to buy songs?

If you mean that you've forgotten them, then if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then the steps half-way down this page should let you reset them : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 link above to add a rescue email address for potential future use

    A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM.  Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM.  RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.

  • Wanted to buy MBP 15'' with already installed software...

Wanted to buy MBP 15'', and wonder if it's possible to order MBP at Apple store with already installed Parallel Desktop and Windows Xp Professional. Just wanted to have ready-to-use MBP. WinXp Professional - is essential for me.

From the Apple Store… no you can't. However, you might want to call them about contracting them to do it. The problem you have is that the Apple Store does not sell Windows licenses so you would need to provide it to them. Your best would be to find an Apple reseller thay'll do it for you as the Apple Store will not.

  • Licensing question. Buying older components of OS X.

Licensing question. Buying older components of OS X.
My first question is where might I find an older version of imovie?
If you purchase OS 10.4 Tiger, are you entitled to download an earlier version of imovie such as imovie2, imovie 3 or imovie4 for no cost? Or must I also purchase iLife05 in order to instal any version of imovie? The reason I ask is that I remember that OS 10.1.5 use to have imovie included. Now imovie seems to be part of iLife which is a separate software package to purchase.
How and where might I find an earlier version of imovie? I ask this in terms of older computers that may run the older versions of imovie better than imovieHD.
Here is why I was asking:
I once spoke with someone at Apple who explained to me that if you purchase an OS from Apple, you are entitled to the software from earlier OSes. If I remember correctly, the example we were discussing was in terms of fonts. I must be certain to indicate that this is how I perceived the licensing issue and I could be incorrect in my understanding:
"If a user purchases an operating system from Apple, they are entitled to install any software from previous releases of the Operating system." For example, if a user purchases a second computer such as a portable computer, and then purchases mac os 10 for that computer, he or she may legally install any fonts that may have been bundled with any earlier Apple Operating Systems such as the fonts that came bundled with OS 8.5.
On Apple's web site is an area where one may download old software (old os systems) for free. These bundled fonts may be installed on as many computers as one would like because Apple offers them for free. You most likely would need to have purchased at least one of Apple's Operating Systems to be able to legally use the software from any earlier versions of your Operating System.
And so I would like to ask if this could be also considered in terms of OSX. If I buy Tiger, am I legally entitled to Panther on that same computer? This may be helpful for someone who would like to use Tiger as well as some older components of Panther. Maybe for some reason ical version 1.5 (in Panther) might be prefered over ical version 2.0 (in Tiger) due to some computer compatibility issue. Whether this is practical or not I am just outlining a theoretical example to help understand the specifics of Apple OS licensing.
And so I would like to ask this question in terms of imovie. How might I purchase an older version of imovie? May I purchase Tiger and then find an OEM version of Panther which I would then be legally entitled to install on that same computer? Or is there a place on the Apple website where users of Tiger are able to download older components from older OSX versions?
Or must I purchase the retail versions of both Tiger and Panther?
    Thank you for any clarification,

Thank you Allan and Dakota for jumping into this issue.
Allan, you have been very helpful with your comments and I think you have answered the question which is "no" (unfortunately). To summarize then, if you purchase an OS, you are not entitled to the components of an earlier OS - unless Apple makes it available free on their website. For example, if you purchase Tiger, you are not entitled to any components of Panther or Jaguar - even the older imovie that came with 10.1.5. It would be nice if Apple jumped into the discussion here to confirm this, however I am sure that is what they would say. Unless I hear otherwise I will assume this is also Apple's stance - that if you purchase an OS 9 (or application), you are not entitled to the components of an earlier OS (or application).
Dakota raises a good point also. However, unfortunately I see a small legal technical flaw with Dakota's procedure. Apple licences software per computer rather than per user. (I believe Adobe's licencing policy is the other way around - which I prefer.) And so technically iMovie 3.0.3 is only licensed to the Powerbook and cannot legally be copied to the iMac even if the iMac is running the latest version of iLife (and Tiger). You see, that was one of the key issues in this original post.
Personally I wish Apple would lessen the restriction on this policy with a clause in the licencing agreement allowing use of some earlier versions of applications (or OS components) to be used - especially the iLife components such as iMovie or iPhoto.
Licencing per user rather than per computer seems to be a little more practical for users in terms of promoting people to adopt the digital lifestyle considering many people have a workstation at home and also carry a portable on the road - well a little less costly anyways for the user. It would be nice if we were able to legally copy certain components across devices but that doesn't seem to be the case today with Apple. Perhaps Apple's licencing policy could be a hybrid model and follow some aspects of Adobe's licencing model. Here's an idea: allow users to pay for a "sub" licence for older apps. Everyone would benefit. Apple would earn more income from us and we would legally be able to use more Apple software on more devices. Just a few thoughts to share.

  • Does it worth to buy MBP retina???

Does it worth to buy MBP retina???

One of the issues with computer choices is that just enough now may be too little later. And while in the past, computers could be upgraded with better internals (add your own RAM and/or bigger HD), the newest MacBook Pros are pretty well locked up as they leave the factory with neither RAM nor storage upgradeable (not entirely true with the SSD but options are limited and do-it-yourself will likely void the warranty). So more planning ahead is beneficial.
The 13" rMBP is obviously smaller and lighter than the 15" but by less than 2" in width, a bit more than 1" in depth and less than a pound in weight (the 15" is actually thinner). And the 15" offers more storage, more RAM, and a dedicated graphics processor in addition to the built-in Intel GPU.
The Retina display is tack sharp and breathtaking to look at but it's also flexible. Apart from the resolution choices offered by Apple in Display Preferences, you can get an extension from the App Store which will let you access even higher resolutions; while that makes everything on the display smaller, if your eyesight is good enough, it's actually legible, even at the native resolution. Even on the 13", the native resolution is greater than Apple's 27" LED display, and on the 15", that's actually usable if your eyes are up to it. That amount of screen real-estate is remarkable indeed, and you can switch as needed on the fly.
I'd suggest that you not limit yourself at the outset by what Mac you chose. And if it turns out to be obviously more than you need, you've got 14 days to return it.

    Greetings
    I am an Iranian citizen
I had a question regarding buying iPad
Do you have a product that I want to send Iran?

You are not talking to Apple here. This is a user to user forum. Apple does not ship internationally. You can have someone purchase an iPad for you and ship it to you. Other then that, you do not have many options.

  • Waiting for my MBP C2D, need 3rd party software advise.

New to Macs, what universal binary softwares available for these new intel macs? Does anyone know when apple will have the special promo again for the Microsoft Office? I remember apple had a 50% discount awhile back.

    Daidee,
This is one question for which you really need to supply more information. What kind of applications will you be using?
Regardless of what you will be doing, have a look here. This will give you a good idea of what is currently available. Keep in mind that most older, PPC applications will run fine in Rosetta.

  • HT200109 Why only sometimes does movies on Apple Tv show the buy option, I need it there all the time?

Why only sometimes does movies on Apple Tv show the buy option, I need it there all the time?

    Two reasons:
The movie companies control what Apple can sell/rent - sometimes they simply change it to purchase only or rental only.
Secondly, if your Settings for Itunes store are set to HD sometimes you won't see an option to purchase or even teh movie at all if it's only available in SD.
There are also sometimes discrepancies between iTunes on computer and AppleTV implying the stores work slightly differently or have different connections.  Check if it's available in iTunes.

Didn't the link to contact the iTunes Store staff in the 'Additional Information' section of that article work for you? If you don't already have a valid rescue email address, only Apple itself can reset the questions.

José, if you buy and download Logic Pro in App Store now, the best option would be to buy an upgrade to Logic Studio. I don't think Jam Packs are available any more in Apple Store, besides it will be more expensive buying them one by one than upgrading to Studio.
