Question on Intel and power Mac compatibility

I have a FW 800 running 10.5 and am thinking to buy a new Macbook. I have server Leopard OS, not installed, Could I use the FW800 as a server and the new Macbook as the master. In other words will a power Mac work as a server to an Intel mac?
Bob

Sure, is all I needed to hear. As long is there is no basic incompatibility. I don't know what a server can actually do. Storage of files, sure. I thought of reformatting some movie files in the background and maybe to take care of down load actives. I find my system getting bogged down with stuff I might be able to pawn off on the server.
Thanks Bob

  • Incompatibilities between Gigabit Ethernet PCI cards and Power Mac G5?

    Hi,
we recently bought a Digicom PCI LAN GIGA32 Ethernet card to upgrade our Power Mac G5 1.8GHz server. The OS on the G5 is Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 (8L127).
The issue is simple: the PCI card is recognized by the system (it appears in System Profiler and as a new port in System Preference's Network pane) but Mac OS X cannot properly use it. We tried to connect the card to a Gigabit switch but nothing happened: no led denoting the connection speed turned on on the switch and the Network Status view in the System Preference's Network pane still show the red light with the "No cable connected" message.
We noticed this message in system.log:
    jedi kernel[0]: AppleRTL8169Ethernet: phyWaitForAutoNegotiation TIMEOUT
So we tried to manually set the Ethernet speed for the card and indeed it reacted, but we managed to have it working only at 10 Mbps (10baseTX).
It seems that AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext [1] is used by Mac OS X to control Ethernet cards featuring the Realtek 8169 chipset but it cannot properly communicate with Digicom's card.
The weird thing is that we tried the same card on a Power Mac G4 and it worked flawlessy. Maybe the issue depens on the PCI-X slots available on the Power Mac G5?
Are there any other report of incompatibilites between Ethernet PCI cards with Realtek chipsets and Power Mac G5?
BTW, we noted that the card's vendor doesn't certify the card for Macintosh systems but we didn't manage to find a PCI Gigabit Ethernet card certified to work with Mac OS X and Power Mac G5 hardware. Could you point me to some PCI Gigabit Ethernet cards proven to work with a Power Mac G5 machine?
    [1] file://localhost/System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plug Ins/AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext/

Is there something wrong with the built-in interface
or do you want to trunk/bond interfaces or route
    between interfaces?
    Just experimenting…
The interface that Apple had in G4 Xserves (Broadcomm
chipset) 64 bit PCI would perhaps be a good buy if
you can find it (available as spare part?).
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/osx_networkcards.html
Thanks a lot for the link and the Broadcomm chipset hint.
Meanwhile, I found that the Realtek website features a driver download for Mac OS X 10.4 and Ethernet cards with the 8169S-32 chipset (the one featured by the Digicom card tested).
I think I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

  • Sync bookmarks between power book and power mac

I'm looking for a way to sync my bookmarks between my power book and power mac. Is there an easy way to do this?
    Thanks
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
There's .Mac if you want more options (not worth the $ if all you're doing is just syncing bookmarks though but good for backup, etc).
Additionally, you can do this manually if you prefer. Go to ~/LIbrary/Safari and copy the Bookmarks.plist between your Powerbook and Powermac (with the most recent updated bookmarks file being copied, of course).
    Hope this helps,

  • How to import calendar from 10.5 and Power mac to Intel iMac

I have my old calendar on an external hard drive. It was created on a Power Mac. I now have a new iMac and to import the old events, I have to do it one event at the time. There must be a better way. I cannot open the old iCal on this machine so I cannot export any events. Help! and thanks.

  • How do I Connect both an iBook and Power Mac G5 to Windows XP Pro network?

I have an existing Windows network at home, with a Motorola Surfborad Cable Modem, Linksys Wired Cable/DSL VPN Router with 5-port 10/100 switch (BEFVP41), Linksys Wireless G Access Point (WAP54G), Linksys Etherfast 10/100 Workgroup Switches (EZXS55W v3) and several connected devices including: two Windows Desktops (wired), a Humax TiVo (wireless), Two (2) SlimDevice Squeezeboxes (wireless), and a Microsoft X-Box game system.
For some reason, I cannot successfully connect either a Power Mac G5 (wired) or an iBook (wireless) to the newtork and internet. In both cases, if I attempt to connect them, the router does appear to see them, but I can't get connection to the Internet.
Also, if I try to access either the Router or the WAP via their respective Access URL's: http://10.0.1.1/ & http://10.0.1.2/ nothing happens.
I have disconnected all the other connected devices and tried to connect them with no results.
Re-starting the cable modem, router or WAP didn't help.
If I connect one of the Windows PC's to the same cable I have tried unsuccessfully with the Power Mac, The Windows PC connects to both the Network and Internet immediately!
Additionally, I have checked out the entire wiring system, which are Cat5E cables. This included re-checking all connectors and testing each wire run. All cables are "straight through" with no opens, shorts or cross0overs.
I am sure that I am doing something wrong and that there is an "easy fix", but it's beyond my meager knowledge.
If someone can supply me with "Step by Step", detailed instructions on how to accomplish this, please help me.
    Sincerely,
Gordy in Reading, MA - USA

    Hi Gordy,
Well, that's certainly some setup you've got there.
Also, if I try to access either the Router or the WAP via their respective Access URL's: http://10.0.1.1/ & http://10.0.1.2/ nothing happens.
I'm not sure about those URL's. Plug your PowerMac into the router , then launch Safari and type 192.168.1.100 in the address bar it should allow you to access the routers settings via the web-based utility. Please check and see if that much that works and post back.

  • INTEL AND POWER PC difference?

at work I run an intel. at home I am still stuck with a g-5 power pc. when I burn to a disk image at work (intel) and bring it home to burn on my lightscribe the .img is very badly pixelated (extremely).
Before I burn it I open it with DVD player and it really looks bad.
Could there be a "problem" between building a movie on an intel and viewing it on my power pc?
This is the second time I have gone through this process and and spent over a week on this wedding project for my niece and I get the same results every time.
the entire project is 53 minutes with 3 separate .mov files.
I guess I could try encodeing from my power pc at home, but it usually takes 24 hours.
as a side issue, does anyone know of a software program that speeds up encoding without any loss of quality?
Message was edited by: apple id number 11

I dont know but I suppose there is different encoding language (slightly) from an intel processor to a power pc processor. Compressing with intel and decompressng with a power processor equals large choppy pixelated scences and extreme contrast settings. perhaps different PCI graphic cards?
Anywho, I have it processing through my power mac, which worked the first time. I simply had over a minute of black space at the end of the first movies, so I went to cut out that portion and a week later I'm just now bearing down on the end of the re-encoding. After many trials and tribulations experimenting with different processors although same computers its the only conclusion that i can come up with. except maybe i wasnt holding my mouth just right during the process.

  • Two questions about a G5 Power Mac

    Hi
I just got a refurbished Power Mac G5 running OSX 10.4.11
Anybody know what's the most up to date version of MS Office I can run on it?
Also I tried to install OSX 10.5.4 (which I have on my Mac Book) but it said it wasn't allowed. Is 10.4.11 the newest version I can run on this G5?
    Thanks!

Gray discs that come with a computer will only work on that model computer.
Leopard discs are hard to find. On another forum somebody reported that calling Apple Sales will work, though I'm not sure. Apple usually only formally sells their current OS version (in this case Snow Leopard). Sometimes calling Apple Support instead of sales and pleading your case that you cannot run Leopard on that computer will not work (or they may tell you to buy a newer computer).
Other sources are places such as Craigslist or e-bay, but again make sure you get black retail version discs. Many people don't know there is a difference. Also expect to pay near-new prices.

  • G4 Power Mac compatibility with new monitor

Have a G4 Power Mac with dual 1.25 processors and a Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card. What limits on flat panel monitors does this system have? 22", 24" or resolution?

What monitors work with a given graphics card is limited by the resolution the card will support. Size of the screen, as such, is irrelevant. The Radeon 9000 I believe supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels via ADC or DVI and up to 2048 by 1536 via VGA (through a VGA extractor).

  • IBook and Power Mac G3

Not sure where to post this topic-
I am interested in creating and editting video with my iBook (G4, 768MB RAM, 30GB Hard Drive, 12inch). I have been offered a Power Mac G3 running OS 9.2.
OK- could I use that Power Mac as an alternate Hard Drive (to store projects)?
A sort of "external" hard drive, that is. The Power Mac G3 has a 13GB Hard Drive, with I understand is WAY below any external hard drive currently on the market.
It should be noted that I only video blog. That being said, my videos aren't an hour long; rather, no longer than 5-10 minutes at most.
    Thanks

I've done a little reading, and it has to do with under the hood stuff with the Login ID number.  I found how to change it on the iBook, but I can't figure it out on the iMac.  Ideally, I want them to both be 501.  So how do I sent the iMac in Mac OS 10.5.8?

  • Connecting ibook and Power Mac via Ethernet

Is it possible to connect my ibook g4, with my Power Mac G4 via ethernet? I simply want to make it so I can swap files between the two. They're both running Tiger, 10.4.11, if that means anything at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mac OS X file sharing ( hope you know another language than english ). You need to go into sharing & turn on file sharing. It will share your public folder.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461
The Mac OS client shares the the public folder. You may try putting an alias in your public folder to the flash drive. To share the flash drive directly, you need SharePoints.
The Mac OS X client version contains most of the sharing software. It doesn't contain an extensive GUI for manipulating the software configuration.
"SharePoints is an application or a preference pane that makes it easy to add and delete share points like in the old Finder. In Mac OS X, by default, you are limited to sharing only what is in your public folder in your home directory. This program makes it easy to share any folder."
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
Mac OS includes support for NFS, the native Unix network file sharing system. You may share files between Mac OS X systems with NFS as well as other Unix Systems. However, the documentation on how you make the shares is rather limited. Once you learn how to configure the net info database with the netinfo command, the shares are not too hard to make.
"NFS Manager is a graphical user interface to control all built-in NFS features of Mac OS X. "

  • Graphics Problems with Leopard, ATI X800 XT, and Power Mac G5

I just upgraded to Leopard. I'm using a Dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 with an ATI X 800 XT graphics card installed, and a Dell 24" monitor running at 1900x1200 resolution. After about 5-15 minutes, the screen starts shimmering with these green lines everywhere. It keeps getting worse to the point where I can't see anything and have reboot. Then, it starts all over again after another 5-15 minutes. The only way to solve this problem is to turn down the resolution to 1360x768. My fan is also running at max speed constantly since I've upgraded. I was hoping that 10.5.1 update would fix it, but it hasn't.
I've spent the last hour reading posts on this forum related to my problem to see if there is a solution, and as far as I can tell there isn't one. Is there something I missed for fixing the display and fan problems? Is there any hope that 10.5.2 will fix this? I've never had problems like this with any of the other OSX upgrades. I'm basically forced to go back to Tiger for now until this problem is solved. I can't believe ATI hasn't updated their drivers for my card since 2005!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Masai,
It sounds like a problem I had when I first got a new ATI X800 XT last October. When I first installed the card, there were what looked like florescent green symbols all over the screen which would get worse if I moved a window around. I ended up returning the card to ATI and exchanging it for a new one.
If you could post a screen shot, I could confirm the similarities in our problems. My problem was caused, I think, by the card overheating . . . which was the result, I speculate, of a disconnect between the X800's memory chips and heat sink.
I got a second card, and it's been working perfectly with Leopard. In my case, the card itself was the problem and not Leopard and/or graphics drivers.
Hopefully that's not the case with your situation. Did the card work okay under Tiger or whatever your previous OS was?

  • Final Cut Pro and Power Mac g5

I recently just got a dual 2.0 ghz Power Mac G5. I'm looking to upgrade the videocard (came with a GeForce FX 5200, 64mb RAM) so I can make this into my media editor. I was checking out the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro with 256 mb oof DDR ram, does anyone have experience running FCP with this card? Will this be sufficient or should I place my money else where in the graphics card world?

In FCP, it accellerates the fx plug classed effects.
In Motion, it provides the processing for the effects you're adding with it.
In Color, it does the same.
Basically, other than running your displays it also is being used for some of the processing done with the suite. So the beefier the card, the better those portions of processing that the suite relies on actually work. Faster renders, more real time playback of unrendered effects... at least those effects that use the GPU on the display card to perform the processing.

  • Questions about Updates and "what mac can I use"!

    Hi all,
I'm new to the Mac world and do not yet own a Mac. As I would like to start developing for the iPhone and the SDK Readme says
"iPhone SDK will run on Intel-based Macs running Mac OS X 10.5.4 or later."
I'm thinking about buying a minimac and get started.
My question: If I buy a used miniMac via ebay, what do I have to look for? Is a Mc OS X version 10.4 ready for update? Is it free? If not how much?
You see question is: How do I get a realy "cheap" Mac for the SDK?!?
Thanks for your answers in advance
    Cheers Sascha

You have to look for a Mac Mini that has an Intel architecture. The older ones have a PowerPC (PPC) architecture.
Mac OS 10.4 is the older OS. If you got one loaded with 10.4 (or Tiger) you would have to pay for the full retail version of 10.5 (Leopard), which then can be freely updated to 10.5.4.

  • A few questions about Memory and Power Supply for MSI 975X Platinum Powerup Edit

Bought this Motherboard: MSI 975X Platinum Powerup Edition
    975X Platinum V.2(7246-020)
    I have a P4 CPU HT in it with 2 512mb sticks of DDR2 memory (533mhz).
I am upgrading to a Core 2 Duo 6600 CPU which has a 1066mhz FSB
What memory speed should I purchase to achieve the fastest bus speed without overclocking???
I get confused as my current memory is 533 which I guess on a Pentium 4 with HT cuts the FSB speed in 1/2 to 266mhz.
    Any recommendations?
Do I need to buy Dual Channel or can I just buy 2 sticks?
    Thank you
    Peter

    Great info again guys!
I'll stay away from OCZ (I read it's more for overclockers).
    @DryHeat:
I watched your sig, great setup! I'm planning for about the same setup (MSI 975x PUE, P180, C2D, ...). But will try a Scythe Ninja for CPU cooler and use an MSI graphic card (maybe 2 cards for 4 monitors in total).
Is your setup silent or just quiet? Makes a big difference for me.
What would you change now? And what is the most noisy component?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm not an expert and by budget does not permit me from making any mistakes.
The case fans create the most noise.  When they are all on "low" I an hardly hear them and have to shake the mouse to see if it's on, but on medium it sounds like a "standard" computer.  Not terrible, but not quite.  On high they are down-right loud.

  • QuickTake 150 and Power mac G3 (beige mini tower)

hello there I have an apple QuickTake 150 but I don't have the software on the floppies. How ever I was able to download them. This is when I hit trouble. when I start to install the software it will select the proper stuff then it stops and says "there is a newer foriegn acces file is present. do you want to keep the newer one or install an older one" so I click newer. then it says "the plugin QuickTime power plug can't be replaced. the installation will stop" then it will ask me to insert floppy disk 2. but I don't have the disk. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME?!?!

"the plugin QuickTime power plug can't be replaced.
You have solved the problem of newer Vs older "Foreign File Access" ( a sub-extension of the Apple CD driver used to read ISO, High Sierra, PhotoCD, and other foreign file formats).
You have moved on -- to a clash in versions of QuickTime Extensions. The version of the "QuickTime Power Plug" extension is different from the one the Installer wants to Install. In addition, It is possible the extesnion on your Hard Drive is locked. To handle the error and Quit, it want to go back to diskette 2. If you can resolve the error, it is possible it will shut up about diskette 2.
