Question on Light Table behavior

I am wondering if it just me and a couple of others who are seeing pixelated images in a Light Table in 3.1.1?
Situation:
With Aperture 3.1.1 set to all defaults in Preferences, I create a new light table (either empty or with pre-selected images) and then drag images to the light table.
The images are small on the table. They appear to be lower quality than the images in the filmstrip to begin with. Resizing the images exagerates the problem and reveals unclear and/or pixelation.
I have done a clean install of Aperture 3 and updated to 3.0.3 and the issue does not exist. Light Table images are fine whether resized or not.
*What I have tried so far:*
1 - Clean install of OS X 10.6 and updated with 10.6.6 combo installer (repaired disk permissions once installed), then install Aperture 3 and updated to 3.1.1 (repaired disk permissions once completed). Import new images from Nikon D80 (both RAW and JPEG) and tested light table. Same issue. Then imported new .cr2 files from a friend's Canon, which all had the same issue.
2 - Copy APTS lesson files and library to drive > open with Aperture 3.1.1 (upgrade library when prompted). The existing images in that library behave correctly in Light Table, but newly imported images into that library display the image degradation / pixelation in light table.
3 - In all cases, I have tried to delete / generate Previews as well as Thumbnails. None of these have sorted the issue.
Note - it almost appears to me that the images used on the light table are actually small thumbnails that are low quality on the light table and any subsequent resizing pixelates the image.
Note #2 - the strange thing in all cases is that using the loupe tool and panning over the images in the light table shows high-quality image.
I am trying to determine if it is my machine (or procedure) specifically, or if there are others experiencing this in large numbers.
I have 8 GB RAM and the nVidia 8800 GT upgrade card in my machine. Whether just Aperture 3.1.1 is installed or with all my normal software, no difference in Light Table behavior.
Looking for comments as to whether users have no issues like this or any who do.
I have already sent a report to Apple.
Thanks in advance for any comments.
Corky

SP,
I do not think this is intended behavior, as it works as expected in AP 3.0.3.
I sent a bug report via the feedback function in the Aperture menu and will follow up with a second one. I was hoping that other users would chime in as to whether they were experiencing the issue, or if it is working correctly on their system. Unfortunately, there has been no response other than yours as you can see.
There are two other threads since the release of 3.1.1 where 3 or 4 other users are having the same issue (at least as far as the pixelation / low resolution image issue).
On my system, the default size of the light table changed between 3.0.3 and 3.1.
In 3.0.3 the light table starts off smaller (with larger grid squares as if zoomed in) and dragging the images onto the table show the same quality image on the table as in the filmstrip. In 3.1 (and 3.1.1) the light table starts off much larger (with smaller grid squares as if zoomed out) and dragging an image from the filmstrip results in a smaller sized thumbnail showing on the light table at the lower quality.
I have also been going back through the 'Apple Pro Training Series - Aperture 3' book using the included library and lesson files (to test for functionlity with AP 3.1.1 and iPhoto '11) and I find that in lesson 3 where the light table is used, the same issue appears once you resize one of the images next to smaller images (which results in the three smaller images being lower quality than the resized image).
My guess is that the thumbnail / preview function connected with the light table sizing is creating an issue where the light table is using a smaller thumbnail when it should be switching to (or using from the beginning) a preview for quality. The fact that the image viewed under the loupe tool is high quality lends to this theory - IMHO.
I am hoping that this is fixed in 3.1.2 (if they release an update), since I would like to use the light table for layout decisions and for comparing multiple images. The bad image quality sort of shoots this function in the foot for me.
The only real fix is to revert to AP 3.0.3 and forego the 3.1.1 improvements which really isn't a fix.
To any others reading this post, could you please indicate whether the light table image quality is fine for you or whether you are experiencing the bad quality / pixelation issue I am? It would help me in discovering whether this is machine (hardware) specific or a wider issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • From light table to album - am I missing something?

I've just started using light table to organise a large number of shots from a recent trip away. I have found it really useful to group photos from particular locations that we visited more than one time over the course of a few days (i.e. ordering them by date would separate them from each other), and also to assign keywords to distinct groups of images.
So I end up with a great layout for my album/slideshow, with all the images ordered just as I want them.
    What next?
If I select all and create a new album from the light table, it just dumps the whole lot in there in Date order (back to square one). "Manual" ordering is greyed out and there's no option to maintain the order I've carefully chosen in the light table.
If I try taking one small group of images at a time and dragging/dropping them to an empty album, of course it just drags the images further and further into the blank canvas of the light table.
What am I doing wrong? Why would Aperture have a light table to work on organising photos on if you then can't actually use that work elsewhere within the application?
Am I missing a trick here?
    Thanks
    Giles

    Hi Giles.  Good questions.
Light Table are Albums, just as are Slideshows, Books, Web Pages, etc.
To create a new Album from any selection, use the command "File→New→ ... "
Light Tables are great for grouping images.  They are not useful (afaict) for sorting images.  As you've discovered, your sort order is lost when you move the images to another Album.
The solution is to change your workflow.  Group items on a Light Table, then select the group you want and create a new Slideshow (for instance) and set the sort order manually in the Slideshow editor.
You might want to experiment with using Grid view (rather than Filmstrip view, which I think is the default) in the Slideshow editor.  I've found setting it up as a vertical panel 3 columns of images wide works well.  I'll post a screen shot as soon as I figure out how the new editor handles images.

  • Question about the CSS behavior when using layer 3 sticky and sticky table

    Hi everyone,
I have a question about the CSS behavior when using layer 3 sticky and sticky table is full.
If I configure layer 3 sticky and specify the inactivity timeout as below, how does the CSS
handle subsequent needed sticky requests ?
    advanced-balance sticky-srcip
    sticky-inact-timeout 30
    CSS document says that
    Note:
If you use the sticky-inact-timeout command to specify the inactivity timeout
period on a sticky connection, when the sticky table becomes full and none of
the entries have expired from the sticky table, the CSS rejects subsequent
    needed sticky requests.
My question is what is the next reaction by doing the CSS if the CSS is in the
    following condition:
when the sticky table becomes full and none of the entries have expired from
the sticky table, the CSS rejects subsequent needed sticky requests
Does CSS just rejects/drops subsequent needed sticky requests ?
    or
Does CSS does not stick subsequence requests to particular service but CSS forward
subsequence requests with round-robin basis ? which means if the sticky table is full,
the CSS just works round-robin load balancing fashion for subsequence requests ?
    Your information would be appreciated.
    Best regards,

    Hello,
There is a good document explaining this on Cisco web site
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/contnetw/ps789/products_tech_note09186a0080094b4b.shtml
It depends if the sticky-inact-timeout is used or not. If not, it's FIFO (the oldest entry in the sticky table is removed). If yes, the CSS will reject the next sticky request.

  • Light table question

I would like to take a layout that I make on the Light Table and export that layout to use on a webpage. I see I can export the images to the web but I would like to keep the layout intack and not just sent the individual images. I would also like to make a background color.
dual core Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You can do it, but not very directly.
    1. Lay out your light-table.
    2. Go to print it, but save to PDF rather than printing.
    3. Import the PDF into Photoshop, choosing a suitable rsolution.
    4. You now have a layered file with all the images on one layer, and can now add a different colour background as needed.
    5. Export in some web-friendly format.

  • Can't save light table as pdf

Having an issue where I have about 45 images (all jpgs) on a light table, and when I click on print light table, and either 'save as pdf' or open as 'PDF in preview', aperture constantly gets stuck on processing, without ever creating the PDF.
If i highlight just one image, it will create a pdf containing one image, but if I highlight all (or none) then Aperture just sticks in the processing stage, to the point where I have to Force Quit out of aperture.
I know the PDF's it creates are typically huge, but I even let it run for an hour + last nite, and it still did not create one.
Anyone else having a similar issue?
    current configuration:
    iMac 2.8ghz 4GB RAM NVidia GeForce 8800GS
500GB Hard drive, files in question are stored in the aperture library.

I have a faster system (3.06 GHz) and slightly better graphics card (GeForce 9400) and it was choking on the almost 1gig pdf file that was created from a 48 image Light Table. It did create the file though even though it looked like it wouldn't. When I got it open in preview, I reduced the file size to 2 mb using the quartz filter in the Save dialogue box.

  • Weird graphics artifacts when using light table

I'm seeing strange flashing shapes and pixels when I move photos around on a light table. Doesn't affect performance, just visually very bothersome. Using new MacPro w/ 8800GT. Wondering if anyone else is seeing this behavior on light tables??
    -Nelson

I also have the same problem, only different circumstances. I've noticed there are several websites that I can go to that yield this issue, and for me the fix was to go into the Energy Saver system preferences and uncheck the Automatic Graphics Switching box. An example of an issue I'm currently experiencing is:
    Visit http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/applepatents_hint_at_final_pro_changes_and_or_new_media_presentationsoftw/
then click on the Reader button and the Safari window background gets all mangled. Click on the reader button again and it all goes away. Now repeat with that system preference turned off and it won't do it anymore.
Please advise if you can reproduce this. (Oh, this obviously is only for 2010 MacBook Pros that have that system preference option in the first place).

  • Presenter View: can't use Light Table?

Let's say I have 40 slides. I'm on slide 33, and someone raises a question for which I need to return to slide 4. So far, all I know to do is click backwards through all 29 slides, including builds. VERY clumsy, unprofessional and time-wasting. (I use my white iMac remote, paired to my MacBook Pro, late 2008).
I tried starting from Light Table, but then when I click Play, it gives me only the two-slide standard Presenter view.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Chuck B

There is no light table view that works during a presentation. However, the Keyboard Shortcuts help page (accessed from the Help menu) explains how to invoke the Slide Switcher, which may have the functionality you need.

  • Light tables and multiple items

I am trying to discover how to add an image to a light table more than once.
Both Apple's documentation and the Luna book say it's possible but I don't quite get the trick involved.

    Ian,
Rather the other way around. I'm pretty sure I
remember dragging Versions onto a light table
    multiple times before 1.5.
I did a clean install back to v1.1 to test this and it doesn't work there either. Either Long & Luna were confused and when they wrote that part of the book and mistook a feature of Aperture books where you can use an image more than once or they had advice from Apple about a feature that didn't get implemented.
I think the ability to have an image master or version appear in a single light table more than once would be a useful feature. I will use Aperture feedback to tell Apple this.
On a related note I called Apple Care tech support for the Aperture application and asked them: "How should the program work in this area?"
I wanted to see if what I was observing was the normal behavior.
The response I got from Tech support was so STUPID that I was astonished! The rep told me to first delete my plist file then export all my image masters and create a new library and reimport the masters. I told him that procedure would loose all of the metadata and adjustments Aperture contained for my 28,000 master files, throwing away 100's of hours of work. He said it was the only way to find out if I could add a image multiple times to a light table.
The rep didn't really seem to know much at all about Aperture and when I challenged him on this point he defended himself saying that he had to support all the pro apps and couldn't really know much about any of them. He concluded by saying that if I wanted to find out how the program was supposed to be working I would have to call tech support at Peachpit since they published the Long & Luna manual.
It was a very dissapointing response but I probably shouldn't have been too surprised. Non existent tech suppport is the norm for our times. I did expect Apple to do a bit better though.........

  • Light Table: zooming option?

Simple question: is it possible to zoom the slides on the Light Table in KN3? As it is now, these miniature slides are way too small to easily manipulate them.
Would appreciate something like in iViewMediaPro...or at least like in M$ Powerpoint.
    iMac G5, dual processor G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

This is unfortunate b/c PowerPoint allows you to view slides on its light table at various sizes: 25%-33%-50%-66%-75%-100%. Which makes it easy to read and move slides around.

  • Smart album from Light Table not working

Hello. I'm new to the forum so forgive me if this question has already been answered or is very newbie.
I currently have 1.5 and am going through the Apple Pro Training Series book. I'm stuck on lesson 7. When I try to create a Smart Album of 5 star rated photos, they don't appear in the album. The photos are clearly marked 5 stars on the light table but not in the project, which I think is why they are not showing up in the smart album. Shouldn't they be marked as 5 stars in the project after being marked that way on the light table?
Hopefully that wasn't too confusing. Can anyone help?
    signed--New and confused

Answered my own question. It appeared to be an IOTK error(idiot on the keyboard). I just had to check the "ignore stacks" box in the Query HUD. Sorry to waste your time.

  • Problem with Light Table in Bridge CS6

Hi! After a re-install (which didn't fix the problem with PS), I now find that, when using the light table in Bridge CS6 and after hitting the space bar, if I then click on the image, it goes to 800% size! Prior to the uninstall & re-install, it worked perfectly in taking images to 100% size.
    Hope someone can help.......
    Thanks, Wardie

Why did you reinstall photoshop cs6?
What operating system are you using?
Did you reinstall all the updates for photoshop cs6 by going to Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6?
After you enter the light table, use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom back to 100% and exit the light table.
The next time you go to the light table and click on the picture it should only go to 100%.

  • Keynote '09 Light table view causes crash on Retina MacBook Pro

I just discovered a problem with Keynote '09 (V. 5.1.1, build 1034) on my MacBook Pro 15'' Retina (2.7 GHz Intel Core i7; 16 GB RAM, 1600 MHz DDR3, under Lion version 10.7.4).   More often than not, when I go into "Light Table" view, Keynote suddenly crashes with a dialog box quickly flashing on and off, so rapidly that it cannot be read.  The only way out of Keynote when this happens is to Force Quit.   This does not happen on any of my other Macs (MB Air, iMac, older MB Pro).  I suspect it has something to do with the Retina display model.   Any advice?

More about my post:  Actually, I since discovered the problem occurs on another computer running Snow Leopard and appears to be unique to this one Keynote document.   I solved my own problem by copying the screens from the allegedly-corrupt document to a new document.  There is no problem with Light Table mode in the new document.   Never had this problem with Keynote before, which I've been using more than any almost any other app since 2006 in connection with my work.

  • Aperture Light Table - Poor image quality

I am using the Light Table function in Aperture (3.4.5.) and I had an issue with the quality of the images on it, when zoomed in or scaled to fit.
The quality of the (larger spread) images looks poor. As if I zoomed in on a thumbnail.
I was looking for a discussion on this and saw some (archived) threads. None of them solved.
However, I think I have found a workaround.
If you get this situation, you can select the image(s) on the light table and regenerate the preview.
    Option-click Menu => Photos => Generate Previews
(note: if you don't use the Option key, you will get Menu => Photos => Update Previews and Aperture may say (unjust) that the preview is already up-to-date).
That solves the poor image quality look.

I just remade the same book - as a test - in the extra large hardback format (ie. the one I used for the previous publication, last year).
This time, the pictures are fine.  The images appear to be the same quality in the PDF as the originals - much, much better.  The size of the file has increased massively too > up from just 2.6MB to 52.8MB.
So does the books production function work well only with the biggest, most expensive option?
I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone who's tried the different sizes, and preferably some brilliant ideas to make them all work equally well.

  • Thumbnails in Navigator and slides in Light Table sizing?

can the thumbnails in the Navigator view be made larger and the same thing in the light table view... can these be made larger too?
    Thank you

Unfortunately, as far as I've been able to tell, and from what I've read online, you cannot resize the thumbnails in the Navigator window or the Light Table. Hopefully at least the Light Table view will gain this functionality in the future.
    Sorry!

  • Rating filter moves images on light table into a single pile

    Anyone seen this?
I have a bunch of images arranged on the light table with various star ratings. The images are arranged by number of stars into various grouping - all the 5's together etc.
When I use the filter in the browser to see only the 5's for example, the light table will show only the 5's as epxected.
When I then select unrated or better, all the rest of the images end up in a single pile on the light table.
If I filter on 3 or better, and then switch back, just the 2s and 1s end up in the pile, ie whatever is not displayed by the filter gets piled up.
Is this a bug or "feature"? If it's a feature it's very annoying, unless there is some way to "lock" the position of an image on the LT.

OK, so figured out a convoluted bodge-around:
    1. Make an album of all your selects. Select all and make a new Light Table(LT) from all.
    2. With LT selected, click the lock icon.
    3. With LT still selected, hold down apple key, and select your album of selects (step 1). This opens this album in a separate tab, but because lock icon on LT is selected, the LT viewer area is still visible.
    4. in you album of selects, type your chosen keyword search. From the resulting set, select and drag the image(s) to the LT viewer. Do this with as many keyword searches as required. When done you can optionally close the selects album tabbed browser.
    5. Use LT as you normally would. You can now toggle on/off images by keyword by typing it in search field.
Any other methods I've tried crashes Aperture.
    Comments anyone?
