Question on Line

I do alot of recording with external sources such as records and tapes. I noticed that when I record with the line input, it records at a low level. I have to go into my music program and up the volume all the time. I have the input level all the way to the max but yet it isn't very loud when it records. I was wondering if there was some other type of setting? I've tried using the mic unforutnately it gives me hums and crackles when I record.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Mel

Some sources for line-in recording can at quite a low level. The solution is to use a wave editor program to "normalize" the volume of the audio file that you have recorded.

  • Questions - Drop Lines & Responsibility, Noise, En...

    Hi,
    I wonder if you could answer a few questions:
    #1 Are BT/OpenReach responsible for the wire from the back of the NTE5 master socket and beyond?
    I believe I am only responsible for anything from the master socket "inwards" inside my home. #151 faults have told me I am responsible for everything within the boundary of my property.
    #2 Our local area is all underground cabling. The phoneline comes under the front gardens (semi-detached), and appears at the wall, middle of both houses. Small circular junction box, line off to each house. The cable from the junction to our house is 6-core white cable, looks suspiciously the same as the internal extension wiring you can buy yourself. Should this quality of cable be used externally?
    #3 There is a second phone line to our home from the junction box, we have never had a second line so presume the previous owners asked for this. The line is not connected, I have removed the wall socket it went to and clipped the cable back. This 2nd line cable is a simple grey 2-core, and I have noticed that it has a break in the outer sleeve, and can see the bare metal of the enclosed cable. Would this be a free of charge visit by an Engineer to remove?
    Background:
    Two weeks ago, I was prompted by failing internet connection to do the quiet line test using a corded phone in the master socket. To say there was noise on the line was an understatement! Unfortunately #151 fault did a line test and reported no problems. Then warned of £130 call out charge, and asked if I wanted an Engineer out. Of course I didn't want to risk it, replacement router seemed to coincidentally arrive when the line noise had subsided.
    Back to testing today, same quiet line test, still have feint noise on line. Nothing spectacular but all the same, I'd rather it resolved.
    #151, same routine. Do a line test, no fault, warn of £130 charge and ask if I want an Engineer out.
    Here lies the rub, I am wondering if the broken second line cable and/or the internal quality cable on their own would be sufficient for an Engineer to visit anyway, ie FREE. Can I get an answer out of #151, no I can't. The ropey answer to question #1 above from #151 leads me to believe I can't get off the call centre script of "do line test, book engineer."
    I wish I was responsible for the line within my property, I could happily remove and replace the cables!
    edit: coincidentally two weeks the weather was very bad, torrential rain and wind. Now it's sunny, calm but **bleep** cold. This "noise" has been on and off over the years, but hasn't caused internet issues until now.
    Solved!

    Apologies, please subsitute "Test Socket" for "Master Socket" in my original post!
    After reading other posts, I am just worried about an Engineer turning up for "line noise" and there being none on the day in question, and thus being on the receiving end of a £130 bill.
    edit: I am trying to ascertain if the outside cables are in fact "an issue", and will lead to a guaranteed free Engineer visit regardless of line noise.
    Well if the noise is still there at the test socket, then there is an external issue somewhere. The "internal" cable used outside does not sound right. It could have water ingress causing all manner of problems.
    In theory, Openreach should do what they call a "Quality Check", at the cabinet and distribution point, especially if its a repeat fault.
    It could be a high resistance connection or corrosion.
    Charging is a difficult issue. It all depends on how the Openreach technician closes their job. Sometime charges can be raised by mistake.
    I would report it as an intermittent noisy phone problem which happens when it rains, and mention the poor state of the external DP (Distribution Point). Do not report it as broadband fault
    With luck they should repace the wiring, and remove any unwanted terminations, which could be introducing noise into the line.
    If the Openreach technician does do work outside, then he should make sure that this is recorded as the possible fault, and not "fault not found (FNF)" or "right when tested (RWT)".
    If that is done correctly, then you should not be charged. You may like to mention it to them

  • Open question on lines TOUCHing or CONNECTing

    posted as an open question/discussion:
    the TOUCH mask for spatial operators between lines is both valid (among others) for
    |
    |
    |--------------
    |
    Horizontal Line boundary intersecting with Vertical line interior
    as
    |
    |
    |__________
    Horizontal Line boundary intersecting at Vertical line boundary
    The question is:
    could it be useful to have a specific operator distinction between the first and second situation, to distinguish those situation?
    this could allow for quickly query/analyse lines that are CONNECTing excluding the first situation, using only sdo_relate with a CONNECT mask?
    this means the following 9i element matrix cases (now all TOUCH) could be CONNECT:
    10*0*1*11, allowing only 1 or both line boundaries intersecting at another line boundary(ies).
    (I know an alternative is using sdo_relate with one of the spatial functions in the select clause.)

    Luc,
    Thanks.
    I think that it would be a good idea. I am sure if I sat down and thought for a moment I would come up with a good business situation that it would help with.
    My current client is a UK environment organisation and they capture certain environmental features as invidual lines which join together to make a feature. Within the Oracle table the component parts are stored in separate rows with attributes to piece them together. I am sure your proposal would help to provide another easy solution.

  • Design Question - Command Line Argument Processor

    Folks,
    I'm a java and OO newbie... I've been going through Sun's java tutorials
    I've "enhanced" Sun's RegexTestHarness.java (using Aaron Renn's gnu.getopt package) to expose the various Pattern.FLAGS on the command line.
    Whilst it does work the arguement processing code is awkward so I want to rewrite it... but I'm pretty new to OO, so before I spend days hacking away at a badly designed ArgsProcessor package I thought I'd run my deign ideas past the guru's... and atleast see if my ideas are impossible, or just plain bad.

                   System.out.println(e);
    }

    Paul,
    What are you trying to do, and why?Sorry I should have made myself a lot clearer...
    What I'm really trying to do is learn Java, and good OO design... so I'm going through the Sun tutorials, and I see that the standard Pattern class has a few handy switches, so I wanted to expose them to the command line... which I did using the handy gnu.getopts library...
    Are you trying to write a general purpose
    command-line processing library?Yes, I'm trying to write a general purpose command-line processing library? one that's "cleaner" to use than the gnu.getopts.
    I've been hacking away for a few hours and haven't gotten very far... what I have discovered is that gnu.getopts class is in fact very clever (surprise surprise)... and my idea to "simplify" it's usage leads to loss of flexibility. So, I'm starting to think I'm completely barking up the wrong tree... and that I was somewhat vanglorious thinking that I (a newbie) could improve upon it.
    Are you trying to write a command-line app to do
    pattern matching?Yep, That too... That's where I started... with an example from Sun's tutorials... where it's used to parse a long series of patterns and strings, exploring java's regex capabilities.
    I think I'll just give up on "improving" on gnu.getopts... my options processing code is ugly, and so be it.
    Thanx for your interest anyway.
    Keith.

  • Question regarding line in on Macbook air, early 2014

    Excuse my english, I'm from Sweden.
    My computer is running OS X 10.9.5
    I'm trying to figure out exactly what apple mean by saying:
    If the computer only has one port for sound then it will be marked with a headphone sign and can be used as both in- and output for sound.
    This text is found in "helpcenter" and futher down, apple also suggests that the user could change the function from output to input by choosing in the "use for" meny. On my computer this meny does not exist at all and there seem to be no possibility to configure the 3,5mm port.
    I honestly don't get it... Is there some additional setup that has to be done? Do I have to download some drivers for the soundcard? DOES the Macbook air even have the hardware possibility to record via line in..?

    Hi Lanny - thanks but I can't make this link work! It comes up with a blank page. Having said that, I already searched on google and amazon but I don't understand which/what I need - so I really wanted a definitive answer!

  • Question ( command line related )

    How do you execute a .jar file on Windows without having the command line opening along with your program ? For Instance I am using a bat file that executes this command 'java -jar wahiki.jar' but when I click on it the program opens normally but the dos window remains. How can I avoid that ? Thanks a lot

    Are you doing this from a batch file? If so, then you're going to see the command prompt window, regardless of the fact that you use javaw instead of java. (Oh, yes you are, I see now that I read your original post again).
    By the way, you can also start your program by double-clicking on the executable JAR file in Windows, which is equivalent to running the command: javaw -jar myprogram.jar

  • Question about Line Rental

    Hi.
    My recent (and previous bills) shows the rental charge for my "Unlimited Evening and Weekend Plan" to be £15.78. But when I look at another BT webpage it says this plan costs £2.99 plus £11.54 line rental, which comes to £14.53.
    How come the difference? (which appears to be 8.6%) Is this something to do with Vat?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Pure Guess but the £1.25 difference  could be due to you not opting for paperless billing.

  • Question about Line Cards

    Hello,
    I have several 4510E+R switches with the following modules:
    Mod Ports Card Type                                                      Model

     2    48  10/100/1000BaseT Premium POE E Series  WS-X4748-RJ45V+E
     3    48  10/100/1000BaseT UPOE E Series               WS-X4748-UPOE+E
     4    48  10/100/1000BaseT UPOE E Series               WS-X4748-UPOE+E
     5     4  Sup 7-E 10GE (SFP+), 1000BaseX (SFP)     WS-X45-SUP7-E
     7    48  10/100/1000BaseT UPOE E Series               WS-X4748-UPOE+E
     8    48  10/100/1000BaseT Premium POE E Series  WS-X4748-RJ45V+E
    10    48  10/100BaseTX (RJ45)                                  WS-X4148-RJ
    As you can see, the WS-X4148-RJ is an older line card.  Our other 4510s have 2 of these same older line cards installed and are used for the wired side of our Guest network.  Are there any potential negative results of using these older line cards in these chassis?  The reason we do this is so that we have less switches to manage on our network and don't have to worry about purchasing additional equipment to accommodate our wired guests.
    Thanks!

    The "original" 4500 cards were limited to 6 Gbps per slot, but that's fine for a 48 FE port card.

  • Swing worker question -- two lines performing a similar task concurrently

    Hi,
    I've been playing around with swingworker.
    The code below has a window with two buttons and two text areas.
    When you click a button, the text area will count out 10000 random numbers, and print "done." when it's finished.
    Each of the buttons works when pressed separately (one is running while the other is idle) But I can't push one, then the other and have the tasks run independantly.
    One stops and abruptly finishes while the other pauses.
    Sorry to post a lot of code, I'm going through the tutorials, I've looked at the example from the tutorial pretty extensivley, but that is only running one task.
    thanks.

    BTW, I realize this code isn't as OOO as it could be (2 SwingWorker classes that do the same thing, 2 listeners that do the same thing) But I wanted to isoloate the problem first.
    thanks.
    Also, it's not impossible the program is working properly, it just finishes before the textArea can be updated.

    Hi,
    I reworked the code, and it now sort of works What I had wanted was to watch each window increment at the same rate, independant of each other. This will show a number in the window intemittenly, but not in a smooth continuous flow.
          class BigJobWorker2 extends SwingWorker<Void, String>{
              @Override
              protected Void doInBackground(){
                   try{
                        for(int i=0; i<100000;i++){
                        int num2 = (int)(Math.random() * 100);
                        Integer integerNum2 = num2;
                        //tArea2.setText("iteration: " + i + " " + integerNum2.toString());
                        publish("iteration: " + i + " " + integerNum2.toString());
                        //ReallyBigJob rbj = new ReallyBigJob();
                        //tArea1.setText(rbj.doBigJob().toString());
                        publish("done.");
                   } catch (Exception e3){
                   e3.printStackTrace();
                   tArea2.setText("EXCEPTION:");
              return null;
         // override process method
         @Override
            protected void process(List<String> messages) {
         Iterator i = messages.iterator();
              while (i.hasNext()){
              String message = (String)i.next();
              tArea2.setText(message);
         } // end BigJobWorker2thanks,

  • An old question re: "file not compatible with this version of Photoshop"

    Hi All. I'm a new member of forum with an old question.
    Running:
    MAC OSX 10.3.9
    G5
    Dual 1.8 Ghz
    1.5 GB DDR SDRAM
    Norton Autoprotect
    Nortons Firewall
    Antivrus 9.0.4
    Liveupdate 3.0.3
    CS2
    MAC is kept clear of clutter and has plenty of space in all areas. Everything is stored on Xternal HD.
    In recent weeks I have been receiving the above error message when trying to open existing CS2 layered files.
    I have searched forums including these and tried everything which has been suggested: Shut down Nortons. Worked only from HD. No  networks. Tried opening with PS 7 in Classic. IR. Illustrator. Graphic Convertor. Changed to .tif, .tiff.
    Opening files with CS is one thing I have not tried, I have not been able to find a version of 8 anywhere to buy or download.
    I have not had any success recovering layered files, it seems that once a file has corrupted in this way there is little or no chance of recovery.
    Having rebuilt many complex files from scratch I am naturally concerned I will have the same trouble with those. To try and avoid problems my latest files are made up of simple CMYK photographic images in multiple layers - no text, no smart layers, no groups.
    But a simple file made yesterday gave me same error message today.
    So today I have started saving many versions of the same file, an RGB version (so I can possible open in IR), a different name, a version as a tif, a psd, I'm keeping a version on HD which i am working on, and numerous other versions on a LACIE Xternal HD.
    Does anyone have any idea at which point in the process the file actually corrupts? Is it during saving or when sitting on HD, or is it during the opening process? Or is while working on the file?
    Some discussions suggest that if you are able to  actually open a file, a corrupt layer is found and deleted and this resolves the problem.
    If there are a number of saved versions of same file, is it likely that they will all be corrupt or might some be ok?
    I am considering upgrading to a new, more powerful MAC and a later version of PS. Does the same error crop up on these later versions? Most of the forum discussions go back a couple of years so does that mean some of these issues have been resolved in recent months?
    I imagine that it may be the opposite, ie, the more complex the programme becomes and the more virus protection etc we put on our MACS the more likely there will be problems.
    A lot of questions (and line spacing!), for which I apologise, but any thoughts or up to date comments would be very welcome.
    Thanks
    Paul

    i havent had nortons running for sometime to try and avoid this ps
    problem and although i cant really be sure there dont appear to be have
    been any virus problems.
    except of course the ps error. which is occurring with or without
    nortons turned on. i may uninstall it and see if that helps.
    bearing in mind that i am not working over networks do you think this
    issue is a ps bug pure and simple or as a result of some combo of other
    programme such as nortons affecting ps. in other words would a mac only
    running ps still encounter the same errors?

  • Displaying line items, although not activated in FS00

    Hi everyone!
    I've got a question about line items.
    I had created a GL account, and in it's master record I didn't activated Display line item. But, when I call transaction for displaying GL account's line items (FAGLL03), I can see line items?
    How is that possible?
    I know that there are some special cases, for example expense accounts: for every expense account there is a cost element in CO, and no matter settings in FS00, for expense account there is always line item display. Similary, reconciliation accounts always have open items management, irrespective of settings in FS00.
    But this is just regular account, with very few settings in master record: its balance sheet account, the account currency is local currency, sort key 001 and field status group G001. And that's all.
    Can somebody explaine this?

    Guys. In addition to above my problem.  I was facing this problem due to some graphics issue on my laptop. I was not able to see most of the fields because of Graphics Driver installed on my laptop. ( Later on I got this solution. ).
    This seems very unrealistic to hear but my experience is true.
    I hope in future if some one will have this issue please check out driver compatibility specially Graphics. This problem may suppose to encounter with Dell.
    Anyways Z layout also worked fine as suggested by Guest FICO.
    Thank you all.
    Regards,
    Sharvari Joshi.

  • Mask Box Lines Show Up in PDF

    When I export my Pages document as a PDF, it ends up with a gray outline of the rectangles I used to mask the images in the document. Is there any way to stop this from happening?

    It seems to be similar but s far as I know, it's different.
    In the OP's question, the lines was appearing on screen, not on printing.
    I responded:
    +It seems that it's a Preview artefact.+
    +When I uses Adobe Reader to display the PDF, there is no white rectangle.+
    +I was able to reproduce the described behavior creating a document from scratch, but only when the original PDF was made from a solid color (in fact a shape of Pages).+
    +When the original PDF is a picture, I am unable to reproduce the behavior.+
    I have no such Photoshop file available but my memory rings.
    May you check how it behaves if you remove the transparent background?
    As old users like me perfectly know, when a user guide states: the program may open Photoshop files we must understand: "it may open them but maybe with some drawbacks" or "it may open some of them".
