Question on Location for SharePoint 2010 Central Administration Console

I am a SQL Server Database Administrator and I am new to SharePoint 2010. I have been asked to find out what the best practice is for the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration console. Should it be on the application server or should it be
on it's own server?

As Scott suggested, by default, the server that hosts Central Administration in a three-tier farm is an application server.

What is the output of:

And can you set it to Started?

PDF File not opening in browser for sharepoint 2010

Recently we have moved our web application from one server to another in Sharepoint 2010. Back up of entire web application was taken and restored in another server. But in the new server , the PDF files in the document library is not getting opened in browser.
it always open in browser
I have already made following changes but didn,t work
Set browser file handling to Permissive from central admin
Set "open in browser" in setting s of doc library
Set the doc library file handling property using $docLib = $web.lists["Your Document Library Title"] $docLib.BrowserFileHandling = "Permissive" $docLib.Update()
Added "AllowedInlineDownloadedMimeType.Add("Application/Pdf") in web app
Installed Adober eader in client machine
Even after trying all these, the PDF files are still opening in Client application(Adobe reader) but not in the browser
It would have been great help if anybody provide a solution for this. I have been banging head on this for two days

To answer your question, you've tried most things that I normally see working, but there may be an extra solution here for you. The solution 2 Powershell that deals with updating the Inline MimeType may help.

For this issue, you can add the following line of code into the pickerdialog.master which lays in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS

Is there a Belltown theme for SharePoint 2010? Or a way to get there?

Our sites were built off the Belltown 2007 theme. We've upgraded to 2010 and want to do the Visual upgrade. However there is no Belltown theme. Has someone built a 2010 version of it. It REALLY would have been nice to have
a way to have a consistent color scheme from version to version.

Since MOSS 2007 OOTB themes don’t upgrade to SharePoint 2010 and themes created in MOSS 2007 are not compatible with SP 2010, it is recommended to use the new
user interface in SharePoint Server 2010 to create themes and apply theme to your sites. You can create a theme using PowerPoint and easily deploy by uploading a new them to a gallery. For details, please refer to the Note in the following reference
regarding how to use theme after visual upgrade.

Can somebody point me to where I can get the latest Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages.dll for SharePoint 2010?
When I go into Library Settings on any library or list in SharePoint 2010 I’m getting an unexpected error; I see this in the SharePoint log:

We noticed exactly the same issue after applying some SharePoint updates (SP1 + October 2011 CU). The problem turned out to be that there was an older version (V14.0.4762.1000) of Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages.dll in the GAC.
This version was being loaded instead of the latest version of the DLL (14.0.6112.5000).
Loading the latest version of Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages.dll fixed the problem with the List/Library settings page.
I check our Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages.dll and found that we have version 14.0.6024.1000.
I would like to try replacing it with the latest version to see if that could fix the problem going into library settings.
Does someone know where I can get the latest Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages.dll for SharePoint 2010?

You would need to extract it from an update. Pre-SP2 SharePoint 2010 is no longer supported, I'd recommend upgrading to SP2 which should take care of any versioning issues.

No usage information for SharePoint 2010 or 2013

Hi community,
I try to retrieve information about SharePoint 2010 or 2013 usage (wich user access Enterprise or Standard feature, etc.).
I checked the configuration of IIS log files and it's ok. MAP Toolkit 9.0 parsed the log files, but didn't show any information about usage.
Did I miss something?

Sharepoint 2010 Foundation administrator permission gone

Hi all experts;
today, we found that the administrator privilege on Team Site Owners suddenly gone. All administrators under this group is no longer to manage the Sharepoint site and the users cannot add and edit any new or existing files.
It affect the domain adminstrator account too, any way to fix it?
Symptoms, under Home page of Sharepoint 2010 foundation, my own user account and the administrator account cannot change the permission on user account. No Sharepoint Designer feature listed, etc.

you dont need to rebuild the sharepoint for this, rather the restore the Content database just before when it was working fine.
I would check at SQL Server, if Content DB is marked as readonly. also check from central admin if site collection is locked as read only or other. could you please confirm it?

Web Analytics for SharePoint 2010 Issue

Hi Guys
I've provisioned Web Analytics in our SharePoint 2010 farm. But I am not getting any figures in the reports. Just all zeros. The Web Analytics Service & Proxy are running, the staging & reporting databases appear to be populated
& there are .USAGE files being generated. I have restarted services & rebooted all servers in the farm.
Message is:
There is no data available for this report. Here are some possible reasons: (1) Web Analytics has not been enabled long enough to generate data; (2) There is insufficient data to generate this report; (3) Data logging required for this report might not be
enabled; (4) Data aggregation might not be enabled at the level required for this report.

Hi Darren,
After you have created the Web Analytics Service Application you will have to start two services for populating the data. Go to Central Administration –> System Settings -> Manage service on server. Start the following two services:
1. Web Analytics Data Processing Service
2. Web Analytics Web Service
Choose which events you want to log
Once the services are started go to Central Administration –> Monitoring –> Configure Web Analytics and Health Data Collection and set the appropriate logging, you’ll want to make sure you’re logging following:
1. Page Requests
2. Search Query Usage and so on
Associate the Service Application with the Web App
1. You also want to make sure that your Service Application is associated with your Web Application, so go to Central Admin –> Manage Web applications
2. Highlight the web application you want and click “Service Connections” in the ribbon bar.
3. Make sure the Web Analytics Service Application is associated with the web app
It is recommended when using a multiple server farm to start these service on multiple servers.
After you have performed these steps you can use the Web Analytics reporting. It can take one day before you can view any results. This because the data has to be populated.
Note: i am assuming that you have already created "State Service" service application which will generate charts.

However when I try to run February CU or December CU I get the error:

it's possible that I messed up because
I think I installed a SharePoint Server Service Pack 2 in a SharePoint Foundation Farm.
these are the files I ran:
1 - SP2 pt-br
oserversp2010-kb2687453-fullfile-x64-pt-br
2 - SP2 for Language Pack pt-br:
oslpksp2010-kb2687462-fullfile-x64-pt-br
3 - ran configuration wizard (had na error message the first time and success in the second try)
4 - December CU or February CU:
Download SharePoint Foundation 2010 February 2014 CU
The expected version of the product was not found on the system
In the first step I think I should have installed
wsssp2010-kb2687464-fullfile-x64-pt-br
Now I try to runthis and I get:
The update is already installed on the system.
Hopefully this is a QA Environment but it would be a pain to start over.

Can't access Foundation 2010 Central Administration

Hi all
I have a strange issue I can't find the answer to. When I access CA, I get the top menu but nothing else. It shows only 1 item in the vertical navigation bar on the left which is Central Administration and the right side shows Resources with a +
sign to add new items. The rest of the screen, specially the middle, is empty. I migrated from 3.0 to 2010 SP2. Everything else seems to load ok, except for CA. I checked the authentication method and Windows Auth is enabled, the rest are disabled.
Any ideas?

Check the option remember the credentials when you log in as another user. Also add SharePoint sites to trust sites or internal sites in your IE settings. See more about prompting credentials：

We are attempting to add OfficeWriter report rendering extensions for SSRS 2012 in SharePoint (2010) integrated mode through powershell. The documentation for “New-SPRSExtension” is rather
sparse and we have not found any clear examples on the internet. With SSRS 2012 in native mode, we make the following two changes to the config files:

Unlike the deployment of other custom extensions such as custom delivery extension and data processing extension, it is not necessary to add a code group for the custom assembly that grants FullTrust permission for the extension during the deployment of
custom rendering extension. If you have copy the custom assembly to the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.<InstanceName>\Reporting Services\ReportServer\Bin folder, and modify the RSreportserver.config file to add the extention entry properly,
please open the SSRS Service Application created on the SharePoint and verify that your extension is included in the list of available export types for a report.
