Question on Parallels Desktop 8?

I'm about to get a 13'' Macbook Pro Retina for college and the place I'm getting it from is throwing in Parallels Desktop 8 for free (pretty good deal!) I'm planning to use it mainly to run some of the games I have on my PC and some other things here and there.
After seeing the ridiculous amount of different kinds of Windows packs (I'm looking at Windows 7/8) there are for sale, I'm thoroughly confused over what kind of pack and bit I'm supposed to get to install with Parallels, or are they all actually the same...?
For instance, I managed to get a student discount for a Windows 8 Pro Upgrade that makes it cheap, but I have no clue if that'll work on a Mac in the slightest...
To you guys running Parallels 8, which Windows OS did you get for it?

As you haven't got Windows installed, you have to buy a System Builder version of Windows 8. If you buy an upgrade version, you won't be using it legally. You can buy the System Builder version at NewEgg or Amazon. Make sure you don't buy a OEM version from manufacturers.
Also, to run games, it's better to install Windows in Boot Camp, so you will get the best performance of your MacBook > http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
Your Mac supports both 64-bit Windows 7 and 8 versions, and as Clinton said, Windows 7 is much more friendly if you don't like the Modern UI

  • Question about parallels desktop

    Hello!
I have a little problem with my Parallels Desktop. I have installed a windows xp operating system with parallels desktop, but the virtual video card's memory is only 256Mb. In Mac OS X i have 2 video cards. One with 256Mb memory and one with 512Mb memory. Maybe can you help me how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!:)

    Hi Tojas;
I would certainly hope that if you told the folks at Parallels that you were interested enough in their code to try a demo but that you were having problems with it that they would help you.
I would start at this site

  • A few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.

I have a few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.
    1) I understand I need at least 1GB of RAM to run Parallels Desktop but what about the hard drive, is the stock 60GB drive big enough?
    2) Related to question 1, even if it was big enough to allow me to install and run Windows would the 60GB drive be enough if I wanted to install a Linux distribution as well?
    3) This has nothing to do with Parallels Desktop but thought I'd ask it here anyway, do Apple Stores carry just the stock MacBooks, or do they carry other configurations?
    Thanks
    Keith

    1. Depend on how intensive you use that HD for saving data on both Mac OS and XP. For standard installation on both OS X and XP, the space of 60 Gb is enough.
    2. Same answer as no 1. You can install all three on that HD space, but the extra spacce available will be less and less for your data. You can save your data on external or back up on cd/dvd and erase it from the HD to keep the free space.
Remember to leave at least 2 or 3 Gb for virtual memory usage.
    3. Just call them, maybe they don't have it in store stock, but by appointment they might configure one for you before your pick-up date.
    Good Luck

  • Using Apple Magic Mouse With Windows 7 64 bit and Parallels Desktop 8 questions

I will be getting an iMac in the coming months and installing Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 64 bit.
I was wondering if I would have the functions of been able to left click, right click, scroll (preferably vertically but also occasionally horizontally) with the Apple Magic Mouse when I'm running Windows 7 through Parallels Desktop 8?
I just wondered if anyone has installed Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 and have you been able to do what i mentioned above and also have you come across any other issues, problems whilst using the Apple Magic Mouse on the Windows side?
If there is any problems/issues with doing the above, is there anything I will need to do to get the above functionality to work?
    Thanks in advance.

    - leftclick and rightclick is working
    - i miss the middle button in my cad-software
    The same with the trackpad!
Sometimes scrolling is a bit too fast, becuase Win 7 isn't made to use with the Magicmouse or trackpad.
The only thing i miss / doesn't work ist the middle mouse button!
Thanks very much for the help stz-42 its much appreciated.
Providing I can left click, right click, scroll, then that's OK for me as I will be spending the vast amount of my time on the Mac side.
Are you able to scroll both horizontally and vertically when using Parallels 8 Win 7 64 bit on your iMac?

  • Parallels Desktop Question

I just recently bought a 27" iMac running Lion. Would like to run Parallels Desktop 7 so I can use some of my costly windows based software (autocad, photoshop, etc). I have Windows XP for a Dell XPS 410. Can I use that for my Windows OS? Not sure if I want to shell out a lot of money to find out that it will not work satisfactorily.

You will need to get that straightened out. You can run XP if you want assuming of course that you have a license of XP to install. One benefit of using Parallels (or VMWare Fusion) is they still support XP, Vista & Win 7 so it gives you some flexibility. Of course there are trade offs, first is if you are doing 3D renderings in AutoCAD the performance won't be as great as running on a PC or running in Boot Camp. Next is depending on how much RAM your iMac has it may need a RAM upgrade. The good news is RAM is very inexpensive, just don't buy it (assuming you need it) from Apple. Buy it from a reputable vendor such as www.macsales.com (OWC) or Crucial.
    Best of luck.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 activation issue on MAC running Parallels Desktop for Windows 7

I have a MacBook Pro laptop running both OSX and Windows 7 (using Parallels Desktop). I installed the MAC version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 when I booted in the MAC OSX mode. I also Installed Adobe Photoshop 10 in the Windows 7 mode (running as a virtual machine using Parallels Desktop). Both programs indicate that they are activated. If I boot the computer in the Windows 7 mode (not using Parallels Desktop) and start the Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 program it indicates that it is NOT activated and that I "already have two copies activated".
Question: Since I only actually have two copies activated how do I get the program activated for the Windows 7 boot operating mode?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you

The 15" is simply a more powerful computer and Parallels can and does use the maximum performance of the processor, discrete graphics card and as much RAM as you want to throw at it. I've a 15" late 2011 model with 16GB of RAM and I've 4GB dedicated to running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit under Parallels. It is, in my opinion, the best virtual machine software out there.
With either machine you can upgrade to 16GB of RAM and, if you're going to be running Parallels 8 - with whichever version of Windows, Linux, etc., that you want, I would recommend the upgrade (note that either machine that you've picked can be upgraded to 16GB of RAM).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Parallels Desktop freezing

    Hi there
I'm using Leopard and Parallels and having issues with Windows not closing down. When I click Shut Down it locks up everything to the point it dominates and I'm unable to do anything except turn the machine off. (Occasionally, there is the grey shade screen which comes over).
Can someone please let me know what I may be doing wrong? It may be just a setting as it seems to operate well most of the time but frustrating when it 'dies' controlling all.
    Thanks

Make sure you have the latest Leopard compatible version of Leopard installed:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21252/parallels-desktop
Otherwise, since Parallels is not an Apple product, you should post your question on the Parallels forums:

  • Parallels desktop 10 for mac

    Hi all,
After using apple's pages, I find it difficult to use effectively. Hence, I am intending to install the pc versions of microsoft word, powerpoint and excel onto my mac. My question is: using parallels desktop 10, is it possible to use pc versions of word, powerpoint and excel without installing windows os?
    Thanks.

You might find the Office for Mac 2015 15.8.1 Preview a practical alternative to the cost of Parallels, Windows, and Office 2013. I installed this Preview suite on a 2014 MBA with Yosemite 10.10.2.

  • Is there a way to access OSX directly from Parallel Desktop - without a password?

    Hi guys.
My dear late brother had left his Mac Mini when he chose to exit this world.
All the while - his Mac Mini was still on and running.
After a while when having to pack his belongings, I noticed this and tried to login - but all the passwords I've tried were wrong.
Meanwhile I had to shut his Mac off - and when later on turned it on again - it went straight to Parellel Desktop (running Windows)..
I noticed there were some files on it - through My Computer :// ...
But all those files which are found on the above folder etc. - is that all files available on the Mac including files on OSX??
So my question goes: The files found on My Computer :// (running Windows) - are they the exact files which can be seen on OSX or is it possible that there's more files available when running OSX??
One more question : Is it possible to access OSX directly from Parallel Desktop - without having to type any password on OSX?

    Thanks for the info.
So that must mean - there may be more files available on the OSX partition then..?
But seeing that it requires a password (login) in order for me to access the OSX system - is there any chance of getting access to all the data, without losing them?

  • Parallels Desktop 3.0, Vista, and OS 10.6.4

I was running Vista fine with Parallels 3.0 Desktop on OS 10.5.
I recently upgraded to OS 10.6.4 and now when I try to open my Parallels session it says I cannot run it on 10.6.4, which makes sense.
My question is: If I get Parallels 5.0, is it as easy as installing this software, i.e., will my Windows Vista partition be as I left it? Or will I have to redo everything and even reinstall Vista?

Installing the upgrade will not affect your Windows system.
+For future reference you should address questions about Parallels to their tech support forum. These forums are for Apple products.+

  • VMware Fusion 6 vs Parallel desktop 9? Which is better?

I am planning to install Windows in my Mac. Can anyone suggest which one is better between VMWare Fusion 6 and Parallel Desktop 9. I use the window only for running the internet explorer and plan to setup Windows 7 Home. Thanks

    Hello jsujana,
To answer your question, a free alternative as mentioned above is not too harsh of an idea. On the other hand, if you did want to purchase VMware of Parallel right now, I would definitly suggest Parallel.
They both are very similar programs, but here is a comparrison chart for you to make the ultimate decision based on your needs - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_VMware_Fusion_and_Parallels_Desktop
The only reason I'd suggest one of these well known Virtual Machines over the free versions suggested above is for coherence mode.
I do want to ask, why are you doing all of this to simply run Internet Explorer?
    Best of luck!

  • ISight and Parallels Desktop 3 for Mac

Can someone tell me how to get my built-in iSight to work with Parallels 3? I am using Windows XP-SP2 and a MacBook Pro 2.4.
Have selected the Built-in iSight in the Parallels USB options and that shows an iSight in Device Manager, but there are no drivers installed.
I tried making a Windows driver disk from the Boot Camp install, but when I try and run that install from XP is says that it has encountered an error and gives no options but Finish.
    Thanks for any assistance

    Hello Richard,
Unless you get some help from a Parallels user here, your best help for Parallels-specific questions like this will most likely be come from Parallels' application Help on your Mac or Parallels Support on the web.
If Help or the suggestions in the Parallels FAQ entitled My iSight doesn't work on Parallels Desktop for Mac do not help, try searching the Parallels Knowledge Base for other possible ideas. Beyond that, Parallels offers a wide range of product support options, including Free e-mail support.
