Question on Photoshop Image Size Zoom & Crop

Hello Everyone...
I was wondering if anyone could help me out on a few questions w/ Image Size Zoom & Crop
I use to work at a studio that had their own small software for editing photos. It was setup so you take an image RAW and you could CROP by zooming. So I could take the image and SCROLL to ZOOM in and it cropped away the rest without actually pressing crop. Then you pick what sizes you want, 1 8x10, 2 5x7 and sheet of wallets and WALLLLLLA it prints them out on 3 sheets of paper.
My questions are:
Is there anyway to crop by zooming?
Is there anyway to keep the original size after cropping?  Example most of my pics are 12M when I crop they go down to 2 or 3. Why? If I have a picture of 4 people and I want to crop to one persons face but keep the original image size why won't it do that without resizing??
It says that to get the best print quality it should be viewed at resolution 300 instead of 72? is that true? and why?
Is there a way to keep the quality at its best and then just select how many and what size I want to have print out? example of the 3 sizes listed above??
I hope my questions make a little sense.
Thanks for your help in advance

  • Photoshop image size vs Bridge

    A very basic question that I've not been able to find the answer to. My Raw images come up in Bridge at around 20-25 MB, 16 bit. When I open them in Photoshop they all seem to have identical Pixel sizes at 120.3 M and 5616 x 3744 pixels (ie total 21 MPixels) even when my images in Bridge are all slightly different sizes depending on content. What exactly is the 120.3 M if it isn't Bytes or Pixels and why is it constant for a particular camera? It obviously relates to bits and bytes because it goes down to 60.2 for 8 bit images. When I worked with jpegs I thought the fact that the Photoshop file size was larger was related to the compression of the closed file, but that's clearly not the case with CR2 files. Please help - I really want to understand this!

    When sending pictures to libraries it is the flattened uncompressed size they want.
    Documents can be altered to the required size using a script IE:-
    var SizeOfFile = prompt("Please Enter Size In Megabytes",48)
    if (SizeOfFile > 0) resizeToMB( SizeOfFile );
    function resizeToMB( size_in_MB ) {
      var current_units = preferences.rulerUnits;
      preferences.rulerUnits = Units.PIXELS;
      var width_pixels = activeDocument.width;
      var height_pixels = activeDocument.height;
      var channel_count = activeDocument.channels.length;
      var final_size = ( 1024 * 1024 * size_in_MB ) / channel_count;
      var image_bytes = width_pixels * height_pixels;
      var image_scale = Math.sqrt( final_size/ image_bytes );
      var final_width = width_pixels * image_scale;
      var final_height = height_pixels * image_scale;
      var final_dpi = activeDocument.resolution;
      if ( image_scale > 1 ) {
        activeDocument.resizeImage( final_width, final_height, final_dpi, ResampleMethod.BICUBICSMOOTHER );
    } else {
        activeDocument.resizeImage( final_width, final_height, final_dpi, ResampleMethod.BICUBICSHARPER );
      preferences.rulerUnits = current_units;

  • Photoshop image size for Premiere Pro CS4 project.

    Bless me folks, for I have sinned, it has been a few years since my last video project and it was done using Premiere 6.  I now have CS4 Production Premium.  In Premiere 6, when I wanted to bring images into the timeline i would create them in photoshop and save them as 720 x 540 bmp files.
    My question is, in Premiere CS4, what size should I make my photoshop files?  I want the final movie to take up most of a wide screen hdtv with a minimal amount of bars at the top and bottom.  I want my images to appear clearly and the text on the images to appear clearly on screen.  I will be creating a dvd and or blu ray, whichever works, and I may eventually want to output the movie for the web as well.
    So ... what new width and height and file type should I use for my photoshop files?  They all need to be the same size because sometimes I use several consecutive photoshop files to show movement on screen because I have not learned how to use after effects yet.
    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks for the info Dennis.  The reason that the size matters to me is that I want a clear quality picture on the hdtv screen.  And with my primitive jibjab-like moving picture technology, I need each image to be the same size so that things move around the screen exactly where I want.  I know that if I start off with a small image size it will look terrible onscreen, so your 1920 x 1080 suggestion is probably what I am looking for.
    I think i used the bmp format in Premiere 6 for performance reasons, but it sounds like maybe performance using psd files has improved with cs4.
    I appreciate the jump-start.

  • Preset crop tool not matching image size after crop.

    I am a labtech at a community college and look after 48 mac pros in which the students use the entire creative suite. (I only mention this becuase any answers need to consider variations in system settings or photoshop settings. college students get into everything!)
    But the issue is when you select the crop tool and enter a custom constraint and crop
    The image size is sometimes a full 2 inches off of what you set as a crop?! I havn't run into this before, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    [I do know you can use the drop down box and use {size and resolution} but I want to know why it doesnt work under custom and unconstrained]
    Thank you again.

    Looks  like you are just setting the aspect ratio. You need to enter units of measure (8 in X 9 in) to crop to a specific print size.

  • Illustrator to Photoshop image size difference?

    I need a logo at a certain pixel size.
    I created the logo in Illustrator CC at the size needed.
    When I import it to Photoshop so I can extrude the logo in 3d and then rotate it...the image size is larger than it was in Illustrator.

    please try checking the dpi (resolution) on both programs.

  • First time user questions (managing library, file size defaults, cropping,)

    I'm on my first Mac, which I am enjoying and am also using iPhoto '08 for the first time which is a great tool. It has really increased my efficiency in editing a lot of photos at one time. However, the ease of use makes a couple custom things I want to do difficult. I'd appreciate any feedback;
    1) I often want to get at my files for upload or transfer to another machine. When I access Photos with my Finder I can only see "Iphoto Library" (or something like that) which does not show the individual files. Very annoying. I have found that i can browse to one of the menus and select "Open Library" and then I can see all the files.
    How can I make it default to this expanded setting? When I am uploading pictures via a web application, for instance, the file open tool does not usually give me the option to Open the library. By Default, I would like the library to always be expanded so I do not have to run iPhoto or select "open" to view the files.
    Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
    2) Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file? My camera will output 10MB files and after a simple straighten or crop, iPhoto will save them to 1MB files.
    Ignoring the debate on file size, is there a way to control the jpg compression so I can stay as close to what came out of the camera as possible?
    3) I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
    While I know this may be useful for some people, it is time consuming when going through hundreds of photos to constantly have to choose "5x7" from the drop down list. Is there a way to make this the default?
    I'm sure I'll have some more questions, but thus far, I've been real happy with iPhoto.
    4) The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it. I'm open to any tips on that one as well....
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    The format of the iPhoto library is this way because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
    Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
    What's above is what's on offer. Remember, iPhoto is NOT a file organiser, it's a photo organiser. If you want to organise files, then use a file organiser.
    Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file
    You don't. Though losing 9MB off a 10MB files is excessive. Where are you getting these file sizes.
    I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
    Straightening also involves cropping. Best to straighten first, then crop.
    The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it.
    If you use the hack detailed above be very careful, it's easy to corrupt the iPhoto Library, and making changes to the iPhoto Package File via the Finder or another app is the most popular way to go about it.

  • Adjusting image size (not cropping)

    I'm new to Lightroom so I'm used to being able to simply adjust the dpi of my photos from 300 to 72 (or whatever I need it to be). I can't seem to locate a similar feature in Lightroom. Am I missing something here? How can I change my large 300dpi files into smaller 72dpi?
    Thanks in advance for your responses/help

    Fae,
    one of these images is at 30dpi, one is at 3000:

    Can you tell which is which?

  • Adobe recently downgraded the "Image Size" function in Photoshop.  How do I get back to the old utility in which I could directly input the image dimensions in pixels?

    How do I undo the damage Adobe did to the Photoshop Image Size function?

    No, it's not downgraded.
    You can still enter the dimensions in pixels with the current dialog.  Just check [ ] Resample and change the units to Pixels before entering the number.  Voila.
    The difference in the layout just takes a little getting used to, after which it becomes very natural to use.  To me it seems more logical now than one in the old versions of Photoshop, and of course the new Preserve Details (enlargement) resampling setting is WELL worth having.

  • Photoshop Keeping Resolution When Cropping

    Hi
    Here in the office we have CS4, CS5, and CS6. CS4 and CS6 work fine but in CS5, If we set an image resolution then crop the image it will not keep the resolution we set.
    We have tried the resample image on and off. We have tried it with and without a background and nothing seems to work. Is there is special setting in CS5? As I said no issues with 4 & 6.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    What operating system are you using cs5 on?
    Are you entering a resolution in the Crop Tool options or setting the resolution in Image>Image Size before cropping?
    Have you tried restting the Crop Tool and/or resetting the photoshop cs5 preferences?

  • PS CC Image Size Looks Different

    This may be in here somewhere, but I didn't see it....
    I very recently switched from CS6 to CC.
    I edited an image, made a selection, blurred the selection, did my normal processing, then sent it back to LR5.
    In LR5 I cropped and exported to 1280 px on the longest side.  Image looked as edited...
    Later I got to thinking about sharpening and decided to try cropping and resizing in CC so I could sharpen just the areas that were sharp.
    Cropped the image as desired, then did image/image size and cropped to 1280 px.  The area I blurred is DRASTICALLY different - much blurrier.
    Went back in history and did a stamp visible, then repeated the crop and resize.  Image now looks as it should.
    Tried it with the "scale styles" turned ON and OFF.  No difference.  In theory I've inserted both images.....
    This appears to be very different behavior than I've seen in previous versions.  What do I have set wrong?

    Hi Noel,
    I opened the image from LR5 as a standard image.
    On the original layer, I did the selection of the background.  Feathered it 1 px.
    With the selection on, I duplicated it, which gave me a layer that only contained the background.  This way, when it's blurred, it can't blur pixels where the sharp areas are.
    I converted the new layer to a smart object.
    I then did a filter/blur/gaussian blur of 4 px so I'd have a smart filter.  Looked, fiddled, adjusted the filter eventually to 6 px.
    From that point I did my normal
    clone/heal on a layer
    dodging on a 50% gray overlay layer
    burning on a 50% gray overlay layer
    Adjust contrast/brightness/whatever on a curves layer
    Adjust saturation on a hue/sat layer
    save the psd...
    Crop using the crop tool - no set size, just removing excess stuff
    Do image/image size to resize to 1280 px -- this is the point where the background blur changes
    IF, on the other hand, prior to cropping, I do a merge visible (with alt down - stamp visible?), I can then crop and resize and the background doesn't change...
    I presume I"m doing something wrong in the image size dialog, but I don't see it.  I've tried it with the scale styles on and off - no difference...
    If there's any other info you need, let me know.

  • Tiff file image size discrepancy

    Hi All, I've created a mono, bitmapped image approx 400px square.
    Then saved the file.
    If I go to 'get info' (I'm on an Apple Mac), it says the file size is 97k.
    If I open the file in P'shop (CS5.5) and go to 'Image Size', it says the file is 19.2k.
    Anyone know why I get two different files sizes?
    Many thanks, RP

    I'm sure that the TIFF file and Photoshop "Image Size" are both 19 KB by coincidence. The "Image Size" is the number of bytes consumed by the uncompressed pixel data. A TIFF file has to contain a header, so the image data in the file will be compressed then the file header will be bringing the file's total size to 19 KB.
    Photoshop embeds metadata in TIFF that your client most likely does not need. Use your Mac's Preview app to reduce the size of TIFF:
    In Photoshop, copy the image to the clipboard.
    In Preview, do "File > New from Clipboard" followed by Save with format TIFF and compression enabled.
    (Do not open Photoshop-saved TIFF with Preview and then re-save, because the unnecessary info will be maintained. Use the clipboard.)

  • OneKey back-up - image size?

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use OneKey backup for the first time with my new Yoga 2 Pro.
    A couple of questions:
    The estimated image size is over 90gb - that sounds enormous to me!  Can that be right?
    The default location is a small harddrive partition (I guess with the OneKey program on, etc?) - so not much use.  Are there any problems with putting the back-up on the main partition of the laptop, or are there problems that mean I won't be able to get at it when I need to?
    Many thanks,

  • Photoshop cropping to correct image size for SP

    Ok, this is my first attempt for support here. I've looked quite a bit at other questions that might be similar but can't seem to find my answer.
    I'm trying to prepare about 150 pictures in photoshop for a gift DVD presentation. Unfortunately most of the shots are portrait and of course the screens are landscape. I'm wondering if there's a way I can crop these pictures before bringing them over to SP? In the photoshop cropping option I don't get pixels but rather inches. I've learned on the forums that I should try and have my pictures set at 720 X 534 at 72. However in the "image size" option of photoshop when I change the height pixels it automatically changes my previously set width pixels which I has set at 720. AND, what it an even greater concern is that the image size option just makes my pictures smaller but does no cropping. I'd sure like to decide where all these portrait pictures get cropped myself rather than having SP I guess automatically cut them to size to fit the screen.
    Appreciate any assistance. I'm using CS3 and SP4

    You will need to scale them and then drop them into a proper template (there should be DV menu templates with CS3, have not got my copy yet, but CS2 had them - should be there when you select File->New)
    Take a look at the action and title safe lines also in the template, you are going to want all the photos to be inside the small area.
    In order to see what you want to see from the pictures you will need to adjust each one.

  • Photoshop CC crop image size & resolution dialog box

    In previous versions of Photoshop the "R" button displays the Crop Image Size & Resolution dialog box.  Is this feature completely gone is CC? I can't find anything the even references this dialog box.  Anyone out there have this issue?

    In photoshop cc 2014, the size and resolution boxes will actually show on the tool options bar instead of a separate dialog window, by choosing W x H x Resolution from the drop-down menu.

  • Pan and Zoom/Image Size

    I have tried the pan and zoom (Ken Burns Effect) in iPhoto 08 but have been struck by the following problems:
    1. With the image slider moved all the way to the left, I cannot move an image left-right/right-left to isolate a particular area for a pan start or finish. I can solely move an image up and down.
    2. In order to do any panning, I have to zoom into the image. What this means is that to pan I have to do some zooming, i.e., I have to start with a close up of the subject(s) right from the git-go and starting with a close up eliminates areas of the original image. This is not good.
    2. My images in the editor (monitor)are complete large in size, i.e. they take up a good portion of the monitor real estate. I thought that reducing photo resolution/image size to 640x480/72dpi would solve the problem but it didn't. I am still encountering the same limited pan ability.
    I build very large and extensive slide shows and I now know the limitations regarding music and sound inherent in iLife but I was not expecting a limitation in image presentation capabilities as well.
    Just for comparisons sakes, I have used Photoshop Elements 6 (the Organizer) to build slide shows and have not encountered these problems at all.
    At any rate, am I doing something wrong in iPhoto 08?
    Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

    Thank you both for your replies. I will definatley try both suggestions.With the cropping, panning and zooming what i am trying to do is this. On a image in previous version of photo elements you were able to select cropping when making a slide show. What I would do is select the image, select cropping. Then I would select a square or rectangular area where the image would start appearing. Then the next select area (square or rectangular) would be where the image would end up at in that. Its was kind of a start & end point for an image. Then to add to this affect you could fade in to the first "cropping selection"so to speak and then fade out in the second "cropping selection". Then your slide show moves to the next image. All in all the transition between photos are a fade in & out affect, whilst the cropping feature let you pick areas of the photo that you wanted to highlight. You could select a small square or rectangle and the image would fade in "out of focus" but the second selected cropping point would be larger and the image ends up in focus.
    I hope this makes sense!!!  Anyway Steve I will try your suggestion and see how I go!
    Thank you
