Question on project sizes?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me why iDVD only allows 4.17 GB projects, even with 4.7 GB media? This is the project I'm trying to burn.
Project:
- total project duration: 142:38 minutes
- total project capacity: 4.531 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)
Menus:
- number of menus in project: 5 menus
- total menu duration: 0:48 minutes
- total menu capacity: 46.225 MB
Movies:
- total movies duration: 141:50 minutes
- total movies capacity: 4.486 GB
It's a main feature 2 hrs. 9 min. 45 sec. in length with a second movie 12 min. 4 sec. long. Burn ready, extra material ends up being just shy of 400 MB. So without that, the project is 4.149 GB.
I was wondering if there was a way to enable iDVD to burn larger projects? Or maybe burn the main feature alone in a project, but somehow put the extra video on as data or something. If anyone could help me with this, I'd really appreciate it.

Hello Solowalker,
first of all you should look at the length of the video: a Video DVD can hold a maximum of 120 min of MPEG-2 video (including menus).
That said, for computer purposes the 4.7 GB translate into 4.38 GB writable diskspace. From that figure iDVD subtracts a certain amount for the menus, which leaves you with 4.17 GB.
For an explanation on the GB issue have a look at this article: The Miracle Of The 2-Hour DVD Disc

You can burn to Double Layer DVD, if your burner is able to burn DL DVD. Or you can try to create a disk image, which then has to be re-compressed. Toast 7 for example can do that or you can try software like DVD Remaster.
hope this helps

  • Question about the size of my project

3.25 GB 20 or so tracks. a few plugins each a few software drums and synths. I getting overload warnings here and there. Not the I/O level the audio level. I look at the fear lilly Allen demo which has 50 tracks all sorts of plugins and a vid. 1.45 GB. I selected and deleted unused in audio bin and still the same. What am I missing. Logic Pro, IMAC 3.06 core 2 Duo 4 GB ram. Thanks Bill

When you speak about project size, do you mean the size of the project file itself? Or of the entire project folder?
When you delete tracks or plugins from your project, you won't see anything in the trash, that is normal. Only when you delete an audio file from your disk +from within Logic+ you'll find that audio file in the trash.

  • Question about the size af:inputText

can <af:inputText> grow itself automatically to avoid scrollbar?
if user types a long text into it, the inputtext area will become bigger to fit it to avoid scrollbar. is this possible?
another question is,i found the size of this input area are controlled by 'rows' and 'columns'.
can i make the inputtext area stretch to 100% width of the page?
i cannot use 'columns' to accomplish this, since the page resolution is different for users. it works on 1440x900,but fails on others.
    thanks a lot

  • Sudden huge increase in project size

So I've got this problem with projects where when I go in and maybe tweak an automation parameter and save, the project size shoots thru the roof, and for instance after doing this a few times with one of my projects, it has gone from 33 MB to - I kid you not - 297 MB.
Scared to make any more changes to it now, it will be at 1GB in no time.
This is not including audio files or anything - just the project (song) file itself.
    Anyone else encountering this?

Are you maybe recording your Automation in "write" mode? Try latch/touch mode instead where only the automation is written which you are actually using on your tracks. Check your Automation event lists for redundant automation data.

  • Maximum project size exceeded

Is there a way to change the maximum project size? I have an index of images on a drive, broken into folders, and I want them all in the same project.

    No ... 10,000 is the limit ...
why not store each folder (from your hd) as a project and put those within blue folders ...
this way, clicking on a higher level folder will show all contents of all projects within it ...

  • Setting up the correct custom project size size for keynote presentation in FCP 7 or motion?

    Hi...anyone else do this?
I have been creating and editing films in FCP (not X) for years now and have got into creating the whole presentation for clients awards ceremonies etc. via Keynote on my iPad via HDMI to HD projectors and it looks amazing and is seamless on the night. No need for crappy powerpoint slides and jumping to low res DVD films - its all controlled via my iPad.
But i want to up the creativity of the presentations - at the moment we import the films as mp4 HD QT files and jpegs of the speakers/nominees/titles screens etc. created in Photoshop and put the whole thing together in Keynote on my iPad. It worked a treat and my clients love it!
Now i had a thought and did a test and created Motion graphics versions of the speakers titles and nominees screens in Apple Motion - so that they had an animated section at the start with whoosh audio stingers as they are played and not just stills - and then export them as QT files - import to FCP 7 timeline and export to compresser ready to convert to mp4 for Keynote.
This way i can extend the static part of the screen after the motion graphic part to say 10 mins as i never know how long the speaker will be on stage.
Then when the speaker moves on the next item i can hit the ipad which will move to the next presentaion screen!
    Q. Now ive been doing these as HD 16:9 screens - but when imported to Keynote I have a white band top and bottom on the screen so i really need to start with a template screen size of 1024 x 768 for Keynote and also keep this size in FCP 7! And also export to Quicktime as the same size.
When i do static jpegs to import into Keynote i just define the pixel canvas size - 1024 x 768 @ 300dpi in Photoshop and it works fine but im not sure what to do in Motion or PCP as I have always created my films in 16:9 HD widescreen preset!
Anyone else doing this and got a solution to my problem and can help with custom project sizes in motion and FCP 7!

1024x768 is 4x3.  2048x1536 is 4x3.  Both of these are current display dimensions for iPads 1-3.
HD video (1920x1080 or 1280x720) is a 16x9 aspect ratio.
Try putting a rectangle in a square. Unless you scale the retangle up and lose image on the sides you will not be able to properly fill the entire 4x3 display area. The easy compromise is letterboxing to ensure all of the rectangle is display in the square. The iPad is doing this with very little effort on your part.
In FC you can create a new sequence and go into the settings and customize it to 1024x768, 2048x1536 or
just about any other dimension. Even If you create a custom sequence at 1024 or 2048 in FC you will see the same results that the iPad is giving you with much less effort, render and conversion time (presuming your keynote workspace cannot change in dimensions or aspect ratio and you are unwilling to crop your 16x9 aspect ratio video to fill the space.)

  • IDVD Project Size Stuck @ 4.54 GB

I created an iDVD project using Magic iDVD and the Pass Through theme (6.0 theme). These are the contents:
    (1) a main menu movie of 6 MB and a 30-second soundtrack (not the same soundtrack as the movie)
    (2) 3 submenus with still photos and a 30-second soundtrack for each
    (3) 2 movies, one 840 MB and the other 870 MB (made with iMovie)
    (4) 3 slideshows of only 10 seconds each. The slideshows each have only 2 pictures.
The project size, using professional quality encoding, ended up at 4.54 GB. This seemed strange to me because I had previously created an iDVD project with 5 submenus, five 10-second slideshows, a 2.88 GB movie (made with iMovie), and using professional quality encoding...and it was still able to fit in one DVD!
Here's the other strange thing: When I replaced one of the movies with a 1.99 GB movie (also made with iMovie), the project size still showed up as 4.54 GB! So I think there's definitely some program glitch here somewhere, either in iDVD or iMovie.

So to clarify: iDVD doesn't care abt the size of the movies but abt the total running time of the movies...is this correct?
That is correct. With the exception of adding content to the dvd-rom section, iDvd only looks at run time or total QT playback (not to exceed 2 hrs. per SL Dvd-R). If you do add content to the dvd-rom section it then reduces available QT Playback. Same holds true when you add audio files, motion menus, photos, titles, etc. The available playback is shortened / reduced each time these additional /extra features are added to your dvd. That's why it's always a good idea to keep a close eye on the Capacity Meter within Project Info. It'll tell you how much space is remaining as well as how much is currently used by all of the content on your dvd.
Another item you need to watch very carefully is iDvd's Map View. If after you add content you then see an exclamation mark (yellow warning sign); iDvd is telling you you must address this file properly before it can be burned to disc. Otherwise it will likely choke during the encoding process.

  • Too Big Project Size?

How big is too big for projects? What are your average project sizes?
Having very sticky and sluggish movement in current project and noticed it was over 40MB. Didn't seem so huge at first but then I noticed most other projects I have are under and around 10. Is the project just too big? Nothing extraordinary or strange about the project. The sluggishness is primarily when scrubbing through primary cut/sequence. Only a 2 min sequence. If Premiere can't handle two minute sequence how are they cutting features with it?
Anyone else have this problem or notice anything like this with larger projects?

I was referring the preview file format.  Currently, we're editing with ProRes LT Quicktimes and setting the preview file format to reflect that (attached).  However, the MPEG I-Frame seems to be the default in Premiere.  Is that more stable?
However, is there a better format/codec for Premiere?  We always cut in ProRes on FCP 7, but I'm not opposed to something different (we run on Mac).
Also, I removed all warp stabilizers from my project and it significantly decreased project size.  Unfortunately, the project is still sluggish.  Feeling there is some type of corruption.
    Thanks Mark!

  • CS6 Mac Bloating to huge project size 5.88GB

I must say I am not enjoying the Mac version.  I feel nowhere near as much effort has gone into fixing the issues from earlier versions.   We have a TVC project that has been getting slower and slower every day we edit.  Yesterday the project size was 120mb which is big in itself.  Today that project size is nearly 6GB.  It looks like the memory management is just not working.  I have an 8-core Mac pro with 32GB RAM.    CS6 has so far been frustrating and depressing on OSX.

I think I found an answer on another thread.
There's a known bug having to do with preview files & using Save As frequently - it'll double the number of preview file references incorrectly on each iteration.  This will be fixed in the next update.
This is such a professional stuffup I can barely bring myself to write about it.   How this got through QA mystifies me.  And no I haven't used Warp Stabilizer on any CS6 project.  At least I know I'm not the only one.

  • IMovie '11 Maximum Project Size

Is there a maximum project size for iMovie '11?  I am trying to publish to iTunes for viewing on Apple TV and my total project time is 2:27.

I have never heard of an official maximum, but that is a very large project for iMovie. iMovie is designed for consumer level videos. If you are doing feature length movies, I would recommend Final Cut Pro X.
The reason is that iMovie renders the movie all in one pass. All your footage, titles, music, transitions, etc. gets done all at once.
In Final Cut Pro, it will render individual parts as you go, so you can make a much longer movie.

  • Recommended maximum project size?

I'm working on a 7 hour documentary (ProResHQ 720 25p; sRGB tiffs; FCP7; OS 10.5.8). I have 7 sequences, each an hour long. The project is 150MB--is that too big? I'm encountering beach balling in one sequence and am working to isolate what might be causing it, but I just wanted to know if I need to slim the project size down further also?
    Cheers

I have had bigger project files

Lots of still images in there? Increase the amount of memory for the stills cache.

  • Encore CS3 Project Size

I have recently upgraded to Encore CS3 from 2.0 and when adding MPEG2 files to CS3 that are around the 2gb size the project size goes to 3.7gb however in Encore 2.0 the project size was virtually the same as the MPEG2 file size.
Does anyone know why this is happening?

What is your default Audio codec?
Sounds to me as if it is set to LPCM.......

  • In Cp5, can you record a window that is smaller than the project size?

We would like to have a project that is sized larger than the application capture areas, in order to have a section to the side of the application captures that can be used for buttons, text boxes, and rollover objects for example. For example, the Cp project size may be 800x600, while the captured window size is 700x600. In Cp4, I can only capture at the size of the project. Is Cp5 different or does the capture size just have to equal the project size? Would this example require capturing at 700x600 and resizing to 800x600, while maintaining the backgorund image sizes and orienting the images left/right during resize? Has anyone done something like this and have a recommended way to accomplish it?

    Hello,
Sorry to be a bit lazy, but it is late in the evening over here. Perhaps my blog post about Knockout Master slides could help? You will have to rescale anyway and I tried to explain some maths for the rescaling:
