Question on SharePoint 2010 Search

I have a site which has existing for many years ...everything is working fine.
Quite recently users started reported that certain items do not show up in their search results.
even though these items do not have any custom permissions. Also all users have same permissions.. (every user belongs to the same SP Group)
Yet!! the item does not appear in search results of some people.
In order to test this, I created a new AD Account and added it to the same SP Group. Now I can browse the site and all its content using browser.
but when I search... the test account sees no results what-so-ever "no results were found for foo"
So this is very funny.
1. UserA belongs to group A and sees everything in search results
2. UserB belongs to group A and sees partial test results
3. TestA belongs to group A and sees nothing
We do not break inheritance anywhere and all items inherit their permissions from site. In advanced version settings, we say "anyone who can READ the items. "
what could be going wrong?
1. why does test account see nothing in search results?
2. why do some people do not see certain items?

Hi,
thanks for posting your query,
Just wanted to give you one hint about content. Check out your contents are present in crawl log or not. If present then check your site search settings and scope using SCA section else crawl the content or site again then try out search.
I hope this is helpful for you. If this works, Please mark it as Answered.

    Hi Raghuramk,
is the web service is a search query web service? if yes, i suppose sharepoint 2013 already deprecated,
    Search Query web service
Description: The Search Query web service is deprecated in SharePoint 2013.
In SharePoint Server 2010, the Search Query web service exposes the SharePoint Enterprise Search capabilities to client applications. This enables you to access search results from client and web applications outside the context of a SharePoint site.
Reason for change: The Search Query web service is deprecated because the client object model (CSOM) and a new REST-based web service are available for developing Office-wide extensibility scenarios. The CSOM exposes the same functionality
as the Search Query web service, and a larger set of functionality for stand-alone client applications.

  • Sharepoint 2010 search service from C# web service and Powershell - passing credentials to search

    Good morning everyone,
I really need your expert help about the following issue. I ve developed a web service in C#. Its core code has a Powershell script inside which makes a call to SharePoint 2010 search service to make some search queries, and returns some URL of some files.
In Powershell code I make connection to SharePoint search service using the Farm Admin account. This system works, but given results are not filetered by the user using the web service (I remember you I m using the Farm admin account in PS code)
How can I use user account to make some queries ? How can I filter search results by user ? In Powershell code I put username and password of Farm Admin account and I know them because I m the farm administrator, but
what about if I want to pass Powershell code some other user credentials ? Of course I cannot know his credential ..  Can I do it , in which way ?
Any help is really appreciated !
    Gae

Hi Gae, if you are using web services, you shouldn't need to add a SharePoint DLL to your project. I would advise against using C# -> PS -> Web Service Call -> PS -> C# if you could go straight C# -> Web Service -> C#.
Anyways, back to the matter at hand. Do you know what type of authentication your SharePoint server is running? Is it direct NTLM, NTLM over Kerberos, Claims, or something different?
The following article provides the various types of impersonation available in SharePoint:

  • SharePoint 2010 Search "Did You Mean" | How does it work?

My customer has raised a concern that "Did you mean" functionality works inconsistently and issue is explained as below:
    1. When I search for misspelled word such as "Maketting" , search page displays the option "Did you mean ""Marketting"?
    2. When I search for another misspelled word "Marktng", I get no result and no "Did you mean" option.
I believe there is a dictionary which maintains the mapping between misspelled word and the correct words but I was unable to track the location whether it is in database or a file system. Has anyone faced this issue and know the solution? Below article
talks about a "Dictionary lexicon" but not sure about the location in SharePoint 2010 farm.

    Hi Deepak,
“Do you mean” functionality is enabled by selecting Query Suggestions in Search Box web part.
Suggestions are automatically built based on what search results are actually clicked on. It takes 6 clicks within a year for SharePoint to add a suggestion.
However, if an administrator needs to add a suggestion manually this can be done using the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell (PowerShell).
I recommend to use PowerShell to check all the suggestions in the Search Service Application, and then remove the one that you do not need.
    $ssa=Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication
    Get-SPEnterpriseSearchQuerySuggestionCandidates -SearchApp $ssa
Remove a suggestion, such as “Marketting”:
    $ssa=Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication
    Remove-SPEnterpriseSearchLanguageResourcePhrase -SearchApplication $ssa -Language En-Us -Type QuerySuggestionAlwaysSuggest -Identity "
    Marketting "

I did not make changes on cert. I doubt it might be something with my SSRS scale-out deployment configuration.  I'm not sure yet. I pointed same NLB IP address with different host name. I'm not sure If I need to create another NLB on WFEs which does not
make sense. They are already network load balanced!! Anyway thanks for your reply.

  • Best Practices of SharePoint 2010 Search

    Hello,
I plan to create separate content sources for each site collection to schedule crawling, and I plant create content source for user profile search crawling. Do you think it is a good practice? We have site collections, users upload documents everyday in one
of the site collections, and other site collections don't need crawling every day. I'm not sure if it is a good practice.

As Alex explain you should consider the Incremental Crawl. its depend upon the the size of content and peak hours for sharepoint and important thing how quickly you want the content is search results( whats your tolerance level).
I would configure the Incremental Crawl at off peak hours and once a day but can be change as per requirement. Also keep in mind, schedule should not conflict with Backup jobs( if you have any schedule SharePoint backup jobs) also try to avoid with UPS sync
    timings.

  • Problem rename sharepoint 2010 search service application admin database

    Hi all,
i have a problem that hopefully someone has an answer to.  i am not too familiar with sharepoint so please excuse my ignorance.
we have sharepoint 2010 on a windows 2008r2 server.  everything seems to work fine.  but as you know, the default database names are horrendous.  i have managed to rename all of them, except for the "search service application" admin
    database.
    the default is: Search_Service_Application_DB_<guid>
the other 2 databases (crawl and property) were renamed without a problem.
we are following the article from technet on how to rename the search service admin db (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-nz/library/ff851878%28en-us%29.aspx).  it says to enter the following command:
$searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -DatabaseName "new database name" -DatabaseServer "dbserver"
however, i get an error about identity being null.  no big deal, i add the -Identity switch and the name of my search service application.  but the real problem comes the error it throws:
Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication : The requested database move was aborted as the associated search application is not paused.
    At line:1 char:54
    + $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication <<<<  -Identity "Search Service Application" -DatabaseName "SharePoint2010_Search_Service_Application_DB" -DatabaseServer "dbserver"
        + CategoryInfo          : InvalidData: (Microsoft.Offic...viceApplication:
       SetSearchServiceApplication) [Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication], I
      nvalidOperationException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Cmdlet.SetSearchS
       erviceApplication
when i look at the crawling content sources, i see "Local SharePoint Sites" and it's status is Idle.  i even looked at this article on how to pause the search to no avail.  (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee808864.aspx)
does someone know how i can rename my Search Service Applcation Admin database properly?  or at least "pause" that service so i can rename it?
    thank you all in advanced

If you want to have no guids for your search admin db, i recommend you check out this script :)
just delete your search service application (assuming you have just started)

    Hi Basva,
Do you want to provision two search service applications in single farm?
Commonly, only one search service application is needed in a farm for Search function.

As I understand, you encountered the issue when you accessed Search Service Application.
Did you install any updates recently? Does it work before? Could you find more related error message?
Please go to CA > Application Management > Manage service on this server, restart search service. Then go to Services.exe on the SharePoint machine, and restart SharePoint 2010 Timer and SharePoint Sever Search 14 services.

  • SharePoint 2010 Search Service is not working on replication of Servers.

Hi, I have a problem. I have a SharePoint Farm in which there are two servers with ip's 192.168.8.60 and 192.168.8.62. Both are replicas of each other. The search service is working on 192.168.8.60 and not working on 192.168.8.62. What can be the problem?
Also tell me how can I make the search service working on 192.168.8.62. What can be the issue?

    Hi,
Could you provide more details about how the search service doesn’t work?
Are the search service unable to be started in CA -> Application Management -> Manage services on server? Or did you find it not working when you did searching? If that is the case, could you provide the error about
    it?
It would be helpful to solve this issue if you provide more details about the issue.

  • How to customize the SharePoint 2010 search query string parameters

Eg: SharePoint search passes k=search term when we perform a search. But my custom page needs
    test=search term
I would like to pass 'test' instead of 'k' as a query string. Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Carol

There is no way out of the box to change it.  You could always write your own control that passes the value or inherit from SearchBoxEx web part (if you are using a search center) to pass a different value.  Query String Filter web part won't
help you here I am afraid.  However, wouldn't it be easier just to change your code to take the value that SharePoint passes you?

  • Trying to link SharePoint 2010 Enterprise with SharePoint 2013 Search Server raises error

    Hi,
I am currently working for a multinational who has SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Edition installed, 2 WFE SERVERS, 3 APP SERVERS, 1 DB SERVER. They also installed SharePoint 2013 Exterprise recently.
Microsoft have recently come in and set up the SharePoint 2013 Search Server to crawl content in SharePoint 2010 as the replacement search to SharePoint 2010 Search. So they have gone through process of certificates and permissions
setups I guess. I was told it was working, but recently failed. When I type in the search box on a web site for SharePoint 2010 I get the message:
The search request was unable to connect to the Search Service.
I checked the Event log and the Critical error (in Task Category:Timer) I get is the notorious:
The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.CrawlReportJobDefinition (ID fa882704-80d9-415b-9b9d-eae5e9bdefd4) threw an exception. More information is included below.
The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration
component. Verify that the administration component 'e9172a05-22ec-4904-9508-
e5431a180c2b' in search application 'Search_Service_Application' is in a good state and
            try again.
I know administration component is the crawler. I am assuming this is permissions.
The SharePoint 2013 Search Server is picking up SharePoint 2010 site collections items fine i.e. The SharePoint 2013 search shows items from 2010 as expected.
On the SharePoint 2010 central admin box the search service enabled and running (checked with powershell). (SharePoint Server Search 14)
    The Search Service id: e9172a05-22ec-4904-9508-e5432a180c2b
I also get the message in event log for gatherer on SharePoint 2010 CA and Search Server:
Could not access the Search database. A generic error occurred while trying to access the database to obtain
           the schema version info.
           Context: Application 'e9172a05-22ec-4904-9508-e5431a180c2b'
    Details:
                (0x80040e09)
Is this permissions to delete something from crawler??????
I would appreciate if someone could help on this. I have tried to be as concise as possible.
    Thanks.
    John.

It was a case that someone had fiddled with the Service App Associations. Hadn't ticked SharePoint 2013 search. Was still point at 2010. Thanks.
The SharePoint 2013 Search works correctly for SharePoint 2010.
Can someone confirm that the Search Service Application on SharePoint 2010 still needs to exist and hence SharePoint Server Search 14 Service still needs to be running? I am guessing it would as you search from 2010 interface not 2013. I am getting a critical
    error in the Event Viewer:
    CrawlReportJobDefinition (Id <SharePoint 2010 Crawler>)
The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component. Verify that the administration component <crawler id> in search application "Search Service Application" is in a good state and try
    again.
I think this is related to the fact we have SharePoint 2013 doing the search instead of 2010.
    Any ideas?
    John.

  • IIS Url Rewriting supported with SharePoint 2010?

I am currently working for a client that is investigating how they can do vanity domain names for sub sites.  I don't believe this will actually work with SharePoint 2010 and believe it may put the environment in an unsupported state...however I need
to find some sort of official MS statement saying so.
Everything I find points me to
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261814%28office.12%29.aspx#section2  which states that "Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 does not support asymmetrical paths" however I can't find anything that says the equivalent for 2010.
I know that web apps and AAM are the typical approaches, and now in 2010 you can do host named site collections, however they want to do sub-sites.
Can anyone point me to any official MS statement stating that this is not support with SharePoint 2010?
    Tony Testa www.tonytestasworld.com

We ran into the same question. Since there's no official statement from Microsoft to be found on the internet that takes away the rumors about it being supported, we set out the question with Microsoft to provide their official statement. Their
reply was that URL rewriting is supported. Find the full reply from Microsoft at my website at
    https://www.zomers.eu/knowledge/sharepoint2010/Pages/Url-rewriting-is-supported-for-SharePoint-2010.aspx
This link doesn't work and also directly contradicts statements from other Microsoft sources, e.g.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/opal/archive/2010/04/23/sharepoint-2010-search-engine-optimization-seo-tips.aspx
    where the following is stated:
"URL Rewriting is still not supported - however url redirect is supported. We are using url redirect feature in url rewrite model."
Please provide a link that works and/or back up your claim. Thanks.

  • Sharepoint 2010 Remote Development using Visual Studio 2013 Connection Errors

I have a customer who is using a custom skinned site developed in Sharepoint 2010.
I am trying to debug a webpart that is not loading on a page.
    My Environment:
Local Laptop running Win 7 64 Enterprise, Visual Studio 2013, and Sharepoint Designer 2010.
I connect to the customers network via VPN and use RDP to access the server. I have Admin rights to the server.
Everything that I have read indicates that Web Part dev has to be done in VS. When I try to connect using server explorer, VS kicks back a 'Server Can not be found' error.
I have tried using the computer name, the app url listed in SP Central Admin, the IP address of the box, and the actual URL of the site. However, VS can not connect to the server.
I have done some homework on connecting VS to a remote machine:
Adding New Servers in Server Explorer
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/edfcxas2%28v=vs.71%29.ASPX
    Add Server Dialog Box

The last connection article is confusing because one of the SO answers indicates that you do not need to have SP2010 installed.
I have been doing lots of reading on SP structure, and it seems to jump all over the place. (Or at least my research does). I have been reading this Ebook:
SharePoint 2010 Development with Visual Studio 2010
    http://books.google.com/books/about/SharePoint_2010_Development_with_Visual.html?id=TVKICs4vHTcC
    My questions are:
Why cant I connect to the Server if I connected through VPN which would inherently make the server a local network computer?
Do I need to have VS installed on the actual server? I read that I can install Sharepoint Foundation locally and this will give me access to the server in VS.
Do I need to have the full version of VS installed in order to use Remote Tools?
    For the Web Parts:
Why cant I see the web parts in Sharepoint Designer? I take it they are exclusively designed in VS, which brings me back to the questions above.
In Sharepoint Designer, I can see a custom view that was created from a custom list. I want to add that list to the page where the web part isnt working. When I open up the Edit Interface, and try to find that list, it does not display in the 'Lists and Libraries'
    menu

    Hello,
As per your description, remote deployment is not possible for server side code in sharepoint so if you are using server object model then you won't be able to debug or deploy your solution from visual studio.
VS is not required to installed on UAT/prod server but you need sharepoint along with visual studio in same development machine to develop any custom webpart.
Once you deploy your custom webpart on site then you will be able to see that webpart in webpart gallery and that gallery is also available in designer so it means you can also add your custom webpart from designer to any page.
Correct me if i misunderstood you
