Question on "Software Update FAQ"

Hi,
I've read getsurfers' post, but I still don't know how to interpret Question Nr. 15 and 38 in the Nokia FAQ:
http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4252029
I've got an one year old 6233, which constantly turns off if I try to answer a MMS with a SMS.
Will the warranty be lost if I try to update my phone?

Hi Sone,
Q15 says that warranty will be intact if you update your phone using Nokia Software Updater.
For Q38... There's a small chance that the Nokia Software Updater will kill the mobile. So they're saying that if that happens, you'll need to bring your mobile to your nearest Nokia service center. Then there's the disclaimer T&C for warranty coverage and that if your mobile falls outside warranty or coverage, it will be chargable.
Hope this helps. Let us know if you need finer details and in which area.
Cheers.

  • TOP questions about Software Updates - start here

How do I update the software of my Nokia device?
You can update the software of most Nokia devices by downloading the software directly to your phone, or by using Nokia Software Updater, Nokia's free PC software.
Learn how and find out which methods are available for your device at
    http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/update-your-phone/
How do I know when there is new software available for my Nokia device?
There are several ways to be notified about new sw versions for each Nokia device:
    1) Use Nokia Suite
Whenever you connect your device to the latest version of Nokia Suite with a compatible USB cable, Nokia Suite will check if there is an update for your device. Note that this notification only works when you use a USB cable connection.
    2) Check online
You can easily check the latest available version on the
    Nokia Software Update website.
Currently Nokia does not publish the expected release dates for future software versions.
What has been updated in each new software version?
Main updates are published on the
    Nokia Software Update website.
Here are some of the most common questions from the Nokia Software Update FAQ:
Why has my device changed language after updating?
After an update, your Nokia device may restart in its native language. Changing back to your preferred language can be done from the phone settings. Full instructions may vary depending on the phone model, if you need help you can download the full user guide for your phone from the support pages of your country's Nokia web site - visit www.nokia.com/support for more details.
If your Nokia device was originally manufactured for use in another country or region, using Nokia Software Updater may revert the set of available device languages to the original language set.
If your preferred language is no longer available after using Nokia Software Updater, you may need to return your Nokia device to a Nokia Care point to have this language reinstated.
Other people can update their software but I cannot, although we have the same Nokia device model. What's wrong?
Update availability is based on many things, including existing Nokia device firmware version, country, and operator. It may be due to one of these variables that your Nokia device isn't eligible for updates.
Please note that your mobile service provider, operator, or carrier may not have approved the latest Nokia device firmware available.
Nokia produces many different variants of each product (for different countries and languages) and not all variants have the latest Nokia device firmware. It is our priority to update all variants as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any delay. New software may become available at a later date, however, so please check again soon.
Why doesn’t Nokia Suite detect my device?
Sometimes the drivers for your Nokia device and associated connectivity cables can become corrupted.
To resolve this, uninstall and re-install Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater:
    - In your PC’s Control Panel, go to Add/Remove programs
    - Uninstall Nokia Suite (if there are more than one entries uninstall all of them)
    - Go to www.nokia.com/support to download and install the latest version of Nokia Suite
I am not able to use Nokia Suite on any PC and my device does not support updates directly over the air. Is there an alternative way to update my device's software?
If you are not able to use Nokia Software Updater, you can visit your nearest authorized Nokia Care Point to have your software updated. Note that this may incur a charge. Locations for Nokia Care Points globally are available at the support page for your country, for details please visit http://www.nokia.com/global/support/locations/

  • Questions on Software Updates

4 years with ConfigMgr and I'm still trying to get a grasp on Software Updates... After reading a number of articles related to 2012 and ADR I've come up with a few questions I'm hoping I can get answered.
For clarification - I just recently converted my Software Update Groups / Packages from a product-focused method to a year-to-year method. So rather than "All Windows 7 Updates" I now have "All Windows Updates 2014". I have high hopes
for this configuration and many others seem to have good success with it. However, because I'm dumping a years worth of updates for multiple products into a single "2014" package the packages are reaching sizes I'm not entirely comfortable with.
2013 is ~18 GB and 2014 is already ~22 GB. I have offices all around the globe that I need to support and this is where my questions come in:
    1. By default I always check the following option for my deployments. It seems like a no-brainer to have this option enabled:
Up until now I've been struggling to get these 15-20 GB software update packages across some pretty slow WAN links. After dealing with multiple failures and re-distributes I'm curious if I can leverage the Microsoft Updates option 100% for some of these
distant locations. I suppose the only downside is 10-30 client computers downloading updates at the same time, but the trade off doesn't look so bad. Any thoughts on this?
    2. Is anyone limiting their download packages to yearly + required-only? I'm pretty much downloading gigabytes of updates that aren't required by any of my active systems, and its rare to non-existent for us to have a largely outdated system joined to
our domain. I'm considering going this route to reduce the size of my update packages but I wanted to get feedback.
    Thanks in advance!

I have WindowsXP (well until this month), Win7/8/8.1, Office 2007/2010/2013.
In both 32bit and 64bit flavours.
I do monthly patching cycles (security patches plus non-security patches).
I have quarterly deployment packages - one package for each Windows edition, per architecture. The Office patches are bundled in with each Windows platform, because we offer specific Office versions with specific Windows platforms, in my organisation.
I'm not using ADRs at the moment, but now that XP is gone, I will be automating a lot more.
I have a few saved searches that I reuse each month (e.g. released or revised in last 2 months and isnot expired and isnot superseded)
For the combination of Windows and Office that you have, I think yearly DPKGs is stretching it a bit too much.
Although CM12 is a lot better than CM07 at handling SUM, plus the single-instance nature of the content library in CM12, there are limits, and "poorly connected" sites will always give some grief.

  • Questions with software update

I recently downloaded a software update to a freinds ipod mini. It now tells me I have to plug the ipod into a wall charger to complete the installation. Problem is, I dont have a wall charger. Is there any other way to complete this? or, Is there a way to erase it and restore the ipod? The pod is useless as is, the computer wont even recognize it anymore. Oh, using a windows PC for this. Thanks.

Connect the iPod to a 6-pin FireWire port on a computer or a car adaptor; you may also be able to use this method to charge the iPod. Until the iPod has been charged enough to finish the update, you can't use it again.

  • Question about Software Updates in the Netherlands

    Hello all,
! am new to the Netherlands and plan to buy the Lumia 1020. I have a question regarding FW updates over here:
Which network delivers the fastest updates generally or does the un-locked (country specific) phone get it first?
Also, if i choose to buy the phone on contract here, after the expiry of the contract, do i have to unlock the phone or will the provider do it for me? (Assuming that the phones are locked to the network in the first place, if not, please let me know!)
PS: I come from India, where we don't have phones on contracts and also receive updates very quickly!

    hi mate,
generally if you want to free yourself from the constraints of networks, your best bet is to purchase an unlocked, unbranded handset from in-store or online. bear in mind that if you buy a handset from origin of another country in the EU, the warranty will still apply, but buy a 1020 that has a product code from outside the EU, then the warranty won't apply. something to be careful about.
as for operators delivering updates faster than others, this varies between updates, and really noone is able to predict this. as for the unlocking, that is between you and your network carrier, Nokia has nothing to do with this.

  • Question on Software Update...

I have an old iPhone and for the software update if you get the feature, as shown in the guided tour video, the ability to save pics from web pages?

The 2.0 software update will almost be like getting a new phone.

  • Iphoto will not re-install after disappearing during a software update, any ideas why this happened?

Before i ran the software update i had to iphoto icons in the launch pad, both had exactlly the same content so i just ignored it for a wile till i needed to update my photos, which i was hoping to do after the update.
However when i restarted both iphoto icons had gone and iphoto seems to have been wiped off my mac completelly, I have got a back up of all my pic and videos so this is not a problem of recovering them.
i have then tryed to instal iphoto from the app store, resulting in there being a perminant downloading icon making no progress over the last two hours.
If any body has any idea why this happened and what i can do to provent it happening again as well as getting iphoto back the help wil be much apricated.

In addition to Larry's questions what software update did you apply? Do you still have an iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder? If you do what happens if you double click on it?

  • Automatic restart on ThinkPad software update

I've got a Vista 64-bit T61. Today there was a list of ThinkPad software updates so I said do them, and watched the progress for a while, but then started working on some other stuff and suddenly the machine restarted and there was nothing I could do about it. I had a bunch of stuff open and could have lost hours of work and this is one of the most annoying things ever. I've worked with computers for decades and never had one suddenly restart on me until Vista (Windows update was also doing this for a while, but I thought I succeeded in turning their automatic restarts off). What caused this automatic restart? Why the hell doesn't it ask me if I want to restart now, like any updating program with the tiniest bit of courtesy would do? (And not do it unless I say yes?) And is there any way to insure that this never happens again?

    Hi, greg.
The following conditions can result in problems after applying a Software Update:
    • You apply a Software Update to a drive which has a corrupted directory.
    • The Update fails to install completely, or you abort the installation while it is in progress.
In most cases, this can leave you with a wholly corrupted operating system.
Here are some steps you can try:
    • I suggest you begin troubleshooting by running the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. At a minimum, perform Steps 1-3.
    • An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
Generally, the only way to recover from a failed Software Update is to reinstall the operating system using the Archive and Install process. See my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ.
Before installing future Software Updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
    Good luck!

  • Software Update through UNIX command

    Hey all,
Just a quick question regarding Software Update through Remote Desktop.
I'm running the UNIX command softwareupdate -i -a but it hang. I'm guessing it's due to our proxy, and that we have to login to the proxy server in order for the system to continue fetching the updates.
Basically, what I'm asking is if there is a way to bypass this, i.e. a command to follow the systemupdate -i -a command which will log me into the proxy?
    Cheers,
    Nick

    Hi.
    I tried the command:

    softwareupdate -i -a
but all I get back is this:

    Defaults have not been changed.

  • Software Update & Accounts

    Hi everyone,
Sorry for my english but I don't speak english well. This is my problem... If I use my PowerBook with Admin Account, Software Update works fine but if I use my mac with a Normal User Account Software Update doesn't work. I have set up it to control updates every day but it doesn't control every day. I've alreay delete com.apple.softwareupdate.plist in Macintosh Hd/Library/Preferences and then to set up again Software Update but nothing changes. What can I do?
    Thanks!

Apple's security configuration guidelines for OS X
10.4 are that all users who need to have an admin
account use it only for tasks that really need it, to
use a non-admin account for everyday use, and to keep
the Admin account logged off when not using it.
Many users ignore this guideline and unnecessarily
run all the time in an admin account. But I think it
is important to follow the guideline; it does make
one's computer more secure against exploits, for
reasons explained in many other threads. But this
tends to be a religious issue on the forums and I
won't get into it any further in this thread.
As for your original question, no, Software Update
will not automatically check and notify you of
updates if you run in a non-admin account. It has to
be run manually. I'm in the habit of doing it every
other day or so; it's a quick trip up to the Apple
    menu.
Ok. But I'm the same person who use a normal account or an admin-account. So, for examle, if I had to repair permission in a normal account OSX ask me for admin user and password... at this point is the same thing use an admin-account. Or not? The same for install application...

Doh! Well reading from Nokia's FAQ / help page...

I get an error message when using my device to update. What should I do?"Remote server not responding"
Most likely your Nokia device cannot connect to the Internet or the server is not available. Internet connectivity problems may have several causes, such as a temporary network failure in the operator's network or Internet, or missing or incorrect access point settings for the device updates (or web browser) application. Remember that if your device supports it, you can also use WiFi to connect to the Internet and update.
You also need to have Update Server settings programmed into your device. These can be operator-specific settings (contact your operator for help), or standard Nokia settings as shown below:
Key *#0000# into your phone's home screen or go to Device manager (consult your user guide if necessary).

"Update cancelled by server" or "Update not allowed. Contact service provider."
Your Nokia device may not have been able to send a message requested or expected by the server, or your service provider does not allow updates. If that is the case, the server may close the connection. Wait a moment and try again. If unsuccessful, contact your service provider.
"Phone is being updated. Try again later"
The update sequence is active until your Internet connection is closed. Wait a moment and try again. Check that your Nokia device has no other Internet connections – for example, that you are not currently uploading or downloading anything other than this update.
"No network connection. Unable to download."
Remember that if your device supports it, you can also use WiFi to connect to the Internet and update.
The only other thing I can suggest is to fully back up your X6, then do a factory reset, then try the OTA update.

  • OSD Software Updates

Few of Questions on Software Updates:
    1.  Why does this process seem to take so long?
I am using this process in my Task Sequence for Windows Updates in OSD (Link)
I am using this process for Software Updates (Link) (Yearly Update Group) & (Monthly Update Group that Updates the 2014 Update Group after Patch
    Tuesday)
    2.  I have my task sequence set as mentioned above and when running Install Software Updates I it installs 48 Updates and then reboots.  Then it comes up to Setup is preparing your computer for first use and start running nstall Software Updates
I and then it eventually gets an error code (0x0000ADDA)
    3.  Also after I realized that there were several Office 2007 Updates being installed I went through and downloaded all of them and put them in my package for Office 2007 under the Updates folder.  I am thinking those are not being applied since
there were so many office updates being installed during the Install Software Updates I task.  The files I downloaded are .exe files do I need to extract these files and have them as .msp?
Please share your thoughts on the processes I am following at this time and what your thoughts are to resolve this issue... Let me know if you disagree with the process I am following... Starting to think for a OSD perspective I might need to have Software
Update Group/Deployment Package for Windows 7 only updates??  Let me know if you need Log information and what log you need.
    Thanks in Advance

    1. Well It just takes that long, because it takes time to apply the updates unless we are taking about a really long time. If I apply all Windows 7 SP1 post updates (around 120) it takes about 2,5 - 3 hours to do a buld and capture.
    2. The install Software Update step in ConfigMgr 2012 is not completely reliable and for that reason a lot of people is using MDT to do the Build and Capture stuff. Other options might be using injecting the updates into the image from the ConfigMgr 2012
    console (Offline servicing)
I have seen the issue you are descriping before and it usually means that you are trying to install to many updates in your TS and ConfigMgr 2012 only have a certain number of threads to use. Or it could be that some of the updates require a restart (and
restarts on it own), which makes you TS error out when it resumes after the restart.
    3. Yes you need to extract the downloaded exe in order to get the MSP files and place them in the Updates folder together with your Office source files. You can find the syntax here for extracting the exe files:

  • Question Re. Quicktime 7.04 Software Update

    Hi All,
I have a question in regards to the 7.04 software update. I am running QT Pro 7.02. I read the disclaimer:
QuickTime 7.0.4 is an important release that delivers numerous bug fixes, support for iLife '06, and H.264 performance improvements. This update is highly recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.
Important Notice to QuickTime Pro Users
Installation of QuickTime 7 will disable the QuickTime Pro functionality in prior versions of QuickTime, such as QuickTime 5 or QuickTime 6. If you proceed with this installation, you must purchase a new QuickTime 7 Pro key to regain QuickTime Pro functionality. After installation, visit www.apple.com/quicktime to purchase a QuickTime 7 Pro key.
My question is, do I have to purchase a new Quicktime Pro 7 key if I install the 7.04 update? It states that installation will disable QT 5 or 6 Pro functionality but does not specify what will happen if you already own QT Pro 7.
One other question off topic, when I launch QT lately to play a clip, the clip does not automatically play even though I have "automatically play movies when opened" check boxed in my QT preferences. Why might this be occuring? It was fine up until a few weeks ago.
    thank you, J

Your QuickTime 7 Pro registration will continue to work until QT 8 is installed. Any updates don't remove a version 7 key. The warning is for older Pro users.
No answer to the "autoplay" problem. Maybe a corrupted .plist file.
