Question on strange folder in /home

I noticed today that I had a folder in /home named pdf-document and have never seen that before. Interesting part is ownership was root:nobody and perms was 777 so anyone has r,w,x access to that folder. Anyways curious if anyone knows what package would have created this folder?

The workaround I've seen suggested is to list all files and directories managed by pacman, then grep for the one you want:
pacman -Ql | grep ' /home/pdf-document'
I don't think that lists directories either.
What about :
find /var/lib/pacman/local/ -name files | xargs grep home/pdf-document/$

  • Strange folder appears out of no where under Macintosh HD

Today I noticed a strange folder with a strange name "㉠ㆨ䞦າ" under root folder appeared in one of the macs in my computer lab, initially i thought it could be someone messing with the computer, but It's zero k in size and the date says it was created this afternoon when no one was in the lab. Is it possible if this folder could be created by a "virus" or some random program?

No. Not a virus. Most likely something created by some Adobe app, which is notorious for that kind of thing. Delete it and forget it.

  • Lost folder named "Home" after Leopard upgrade

This may seem ridiculous but I actually had a personal folder called "Home" on OS 10.4 and when I upgraded to Leopard it disappeared. I thought that it might still be on the computer but that the directory structure might have been corrupted. I used DiskWarrior and was happy to see that the Home folder was still present and had all of the original subdirectories and files. But after rebuilding the directory structure using DiskWarrior the folder still doesnt appear. Can some one help me in transferring the subdirectories and filed to a new folder ... that I will obviously not name "Home"?

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
Not ridiculous at all. In fact it was rather common back some months ago.
Apple has a document that should help you fix things:

  • Mba freezes and than can't reboot (question mark in folder)

My mba acts kind of crazy lately. It suddenly freezes and when I try to reboot it doesn't find my ssd and gives me the dreaded question mark in folder sign. When I try recovery mode it doesn't show my ssd, but if I keep trying sometimes after a few minutes or a few hours it boots just fine.
Is it a software ot hardware issue?
Thanks in advance for your help.

If you have the original disk that shipped with the iMac, you can try booting from it.
Put the disk in and restart the computer while holding the C key down. If the computer boots you can start the installation process. (You are not reinstalling.) After the screen where you select the language you will see a menu bar. Click Utilities and run Disk Utility. In DU, select the hard drive on the left, First aid, and click Repair disk. When that is done, quit DU and restart the computer in the usual way.
If DU tells you the disk cannot be repaired, you will have to replace it.

  • Normal user unable to launch folding at home daemon

    Hello everyone,
I recently tried to install folding at home on my arch linux system. I followed the wiki guide and everything went smoothly except from one thing. I edited the /etc/conf.d/foldingathome file to be able to launch the daemon as a normal user and not as root. However when I start folding at home I get this
    andrew ~ $ /etc/rc.d/foldingathome start
:: Starting Folding@Home [BUSY] standard in must be a tty
/bin/touch: cannot touch `/var/run/daemons/foldingathome': Permission denied
    [DONE]
As root I'm able to run it with no problems. Any ideas on how to solve this?
    Thanks in advance.

you should change permissions to /var/run/daemons/foldingathome.
    like this:
    sudo chown -R yourusername:yourusergroup /var/run/daemons/foldingathome
or change this dir in config files somewhere at home dir.

  • Question about pictures file in home folder

I am trying to create more space on my hard drive and have a question about the pictures file.
In addition to the iPhoto Library I have several folders named 1, 2, 3 etc each containing a bunch of photos; plus several hundred individual photo files.
My question is whether these files are duplicates of what is in the iPhoto Library - and is there an easy way to find that out?
And I guess also to find out how they got there in the first place. Could these be imports from disks as opposed to my digital camera?
    Thanks for any help,
    Laura

    Hey laura,
I haven't used iPhoto for a while but from memory i think that i work similar to iTunes. Whne files are processed by iPhoto they are catalogued on the hard drive according to the iPhoto preferences. I would check out the iPhoto preferences and see if you can see anything in here that will tell you what is going on.

  • Question re: Strange Preference folder files

I'm almost afraid to ask but ever since I started freelancing at this place, these empty folders with name configurations like: ›¥¿êi®øˇfi¿†}Ò|êkÿê~êøˇflßòqT,
    appear periodically in my ~/library/preferences.
Was just wondering if anyone knew what they were.
    Thanks.

It's definitely not Rosetta. I had the same thing happen with Photoshop on my PowerPC PowerBook.
Only recent did I need to use my scanner and up until not these folder hadn't appeared on my Mac Pro until I installed and used it. Now, as I only use it through Photoshop it's easy to make one for the other creating these files although Photoshop didn't make them before the scanning software was installed.

  • How can I create application folder in home folder?

    Hi there,
I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
    I have two questions.
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research. Does anyone know if this is a bad thing?
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?
    Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for the answer.
I've screwed up my computer before doing some dumb things without asking, so I was a little paranoid.

  • Question about "library" folder

Sorry if this is dumb question, just got the computer yesterday. Anyway, I was snooping around in the library folder and I deleted some things in an attempt to free up some space, however I think that the things I deleted may have been important. I deleted "LaunchAgents", "Perl", "Python", and "Ruby". Can someone please shed some insight as to what these folders were for, and if they were important, how can I get them back.
    Thank you

Everything in the System and Library folders are important for the system - you should never delete anything from them. In fact, you're asked for an admin password before you can delete them, for a good reason. You should do an Archive and Install of your system (or a Time Machine restore, if you have one) to get back to a good working system, otherwise you're liable to experience crashes and system failures.
Likewise, you shouldn't delete anything in your home folder's Library folder unless you understand what it is and know what the consequences are.

  • Missing "Application Support" folder in home library (OS 10.6)

So about 6 months ago my old Macbook (from 2006, running OS 10.5.8) finally bit the dust for the last time with a fried logic board. However, this time the hard drive was perfectly functional, so I rescued it from the laptop before trading in the rest of the parts to get a discount on a new Macbook Pro (running OS 10.6.8).
Because the hard drive is still functional, I'm using a hard drive reader to transfer over all my files and information to the new laptop. Everything is there on the old drive, except one key component. I'm missing the "Application Support" folder from my home library (~/Library), which contains a lot of important settings for several applications I use (such as Firefox, an MSN messenger clone I use, etc). I've tried connecting the hard drive reader several times, and each time that folder is missing when I open up the home folder Library.
This folder was clearly there and functioning when the hard drive was still in my old computer. So my question is, where did it go? Is there any way of accessing it with the hard drive reader? Is it gone because of some kind of corruption, and why is it just that folder in particular that's missing? Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated, since the missing settings contained information that will be very difficult, if not impossible to replace.
    Thanks!

Disk Utility will do a verify/repair of an external disk. Though the chances of this being disk corruption is imo slim. For only one subfolder of of one folder to get clobbered due to a hardware failure while possible is extremely remote.
Try the Disk Utility repair function if the directory is collbered that should recover it (or at least let you know that there is an issue with the drive).
    good luck

  • Quick beginner question about Applications folder

I have a really simple basic question: Can I organize my computer's applications folder anyway I want? I don't want to move anything out of the apps folder but I do want to group my apps by a few different categories using folders. I don't see why this would be a problem but I wanted to be sure before I fouled anything up. (Time Machine will be nice).

Create an Applications folder in your home folder and fill it with aliases to the real applications. You can organise these into sub-folders as you wish, without affecting the real applications. Moving the real applications can make updates fail. Different users can have different arrangements of applications.

  • Steam just created a new folder in home and seemed to remove all games

I just logged into Steam, first strange thing, it asked me again for a code verification (like new computer, which this is not)
then, I go in to see the games, and all of them are removed.
The old folder seems to be there ~/.steam I don't know if I can copy in the games
any idea how to fix this that doesn't need to download all my games again??

Same thing happened to me, a few days ago.
I though steam had changed its directory from .local/share/Steam to ~/Steam, so I removed everything from both locations (plus the .steam and two symlink on home dir), ran steam and downloaded all the games, (steam defaulted to .local/share/Steam again...)
And the next day, same thing happened!
Removed every trace of Steam again, reinstalled again, downloaded all the games, closed steam, and this time I made a symlink (ln -s ./local/share/Steam), been working fine since then
