Question on Transfering Music Between Computers

I have read the article on using the iPod as a harddrive and transferring to a new computer...but there's still a couple things I'm not clear about.
1. If I wanted to tranfer my iTunes library to a new computer, I would first transfer all the music to my iPod, then, in the new computer, make sure Syncing is off, and then simply transfer purchases from iPod? I got confused in the article where it reads: "If you've erased the iTunes library on your computer, there's no way to use the Finder or My Computer to copy the media from your iPod to reconstitute the library on your computer." Is this simply saying the only way to restore the library is to use the "transfer purchases from iPod" option or re-burn and buy all my music?
2. If I purchase a song from another computer and load it to my iPod, will the song be erased when I hook my iPod to my home computer if it syncs before I use the "Transfer purchases from iPod" option?
Matt

can anyone help here?

  • Transferring Music Between Computers With Ipod (Very Unique Situation)

My Ipod has about 300+ songs on it that aren't on my old desktop (Windows)and I would like to know if I can get those 300 songs off the Ipod and onto my new MacBook Pro. I looked at the tutorial for how to do this and I saw two problems I would need to address. The first is the guide says something about not being able to move the files from a PC to a Mac and the second is it talks about updating the files on the ipod which I can't do since the files I want to find aren't on there. Can I move these files without updating the Ipod? Oh and by the way I moved all the other files over to the MacBook.

There's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are also a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you are happy with.
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    iPod.iTunes Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to your MacBook and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod will appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • Sharing/transferring music between computers

I am trying to transfer/share my "podcasts" folder, "purchased" folder, and a personal folder from this computer, my father's laptop, to our home computer, a desktop computer. My dad also uses iTunes on this laptop, so we each have a separate folder within iTunes for our playlists, thus my only transferring certain playlists. I followed each step precisely as shown in the article about this on the website, but it did not work, as many times as I checked to make sure I was doing everything right. When I go to the home desktop computer and check the Look for Shared Music box in the Preferences section, then click OK, nothing ever comes into the source list, where the folders from this laptop are supposed to be. Please help! The home computer is new, and the old one was not capable of having iTunes, so all I am trying to do is transfer my iTunes folders and the music contained in them from this laptop to that computer. Any suggestions? Please?!

  • HT3819 Transferring music between computers

I burned to computer A, I have music on computer B, I want both libraries on my iPhone. Each library is under the same apple ID, but I can only access it when all devices are connected to wi-fi

Put all the media, apps and anything else into the library that the device actually syncs with. You can clone that library to the other computer if you want. Turn off Wi-Fi syncing before trying to change which of the two clones the device connects to.

  • Problem Transferring items between computers

Hi, I followed the instructions under Transferring items between computers, and the pc I tranferred to gives me an error message stating: "Document is not licensed for this device type." Both devices are HP with WIndows 7. The ebook opens just fine on one HP, but not on the second HP. How can I get it to open successfully on both computers? Thank you.

    Ken,
If you need to regularly transfer data then I'd set up an Ethernet connection to file share and then transfer (modern Macs have at least 100BaseT Ethernet (which is around 12MBps max).
If it's a irregular transfer you don't do often then using Firewire Target Disk Mode (theoretical 50MBps max) is probably easiest:
Connect the two Macs with a 6pin-to-6pin Firewire cable.
Restart the donor Mac which has the files on it and hold down the T key.
The hard disk of the donor Mac will appear on the second Mac.
    Transfer your files.
Drag the hard disk of the donor Mac to the Trash to unmount it.
Power down the donor Mac using the power button.
Other options include networking over Firewire (again about 50Mbps but some overheads for the protocols involved) or Airport (original approx 1MBps max, Extreme approx 6MBps max).

  • Question re: transfering music from work to home computer

hello! My itunes at work has roughly 3500 songs on it and I have all those songs on my ipod. My husband wants to use my ipod while he works out and i wanted to create a playlist just for him (for the songs that he wants, so he doesnt have to hear my "country crap" as he calls it- lol)- anyway because all my songs are at work and there are at least 3500 songs he doesnt want to go through each song on my ipod, and write down all the songs he wants in his playlist. soooo-- is there a way to put the songs on our home computer too- so i can create the playlist and he can just listen to each song or pick the songs he knows add them to his playlist and be done with it? it can potentially be a one time thing since once he has gone through the bulk of the songs and he has his playlist started it will be easier to add since it most likely will be a cd or two- and not 3000 plus songs to go through. Hope I make sense.
    thanks!!
    lisa

You could move the songs from your iPod to your computer using an option like one of these...
    YamiPod
    MacMuse: Computer Crashed
You also can search the Discussions and the Internet (via Google) for more options.
That would be the easiest option.
If you want to move the songs from computer to computer (without your iPod), see this...

  • Question re: transferring music from computer (iTunes) to iPod

This is going to make me sound like an idiot but I'm having problems transferring music that I purchased on iTunes (on my laptopy) to my iPod. It shows all the music in my "purchased" file but when I try to drag it to the iPod or a playlist on the iPod, nothing happens. I don't download music often but nothing I've tried is working...I'm sure this is an easy fix. I have the settings on "manual transfer" because when I had it on "automatic transfer" it previously erased everything on my iPod that I didn't also have in my library. Suggestions for this silly question?

Do a "search" from the main menu. This topic has been discussed ad nauseum. In the future, bear in mind that the computer IS the backup for the iPod and the computer itself should also be backed up to another medium.

  • Question about transferring settings between profiles

I'm having a problem transferring settings between profiles. The following procedure replicates the problem:
Launch Firefox with an existing profile and reconfigure the navigation toolbar so that the Stop and Reload buttons are separate.
Using Profile Manager, create a new profile; DON'T launch Firefox.
Copy file localstore.rdf from the old profile to the new profile.
Launch Firefox with the new profile and observe that the Stop and Reload buttons in the navigation toolbar are in their default, combined configuration.
Close Firefox and copy file localstore.rdf from the old profile to the new profile AGAIN.
Relaunch Firefox with the new profile and observe that the Stop and Reload buttons in the navigation toolbar are separate.
The same thing happens with bookmarks menu tweaks and file places.sqlite (I'm referring to tweaks to the menu itself, not the bookmarks).
It seems that Firefox doesn't honor some of the settings in localstore.rdf and places.sqlite the first time it is run with a new profile. Running Firefox the first time over-writes the custom settings, requiring that the files be copied a second time. Then it works as expected.
I stumbled across this while trying to pre-install Firefox v9.0.1 and my custom settings on several systems running Windows XP.
    Does anyone know a work-around?

Maybe create a default template folder and place the files in that folder.

  • Question about transferring music

When you transfer music from your current computer to a new computer, what all gets transferred? Is it just the music file, or do album art, play count, rating, etc. also get transferred?
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Discussions!
(Your name is the same as mine. Cool!)
If your iPod automatically updates when connect to the computer, all information in iTunes is transferred--music files, album art, play count, rating & any other info about the songs.
If the album art doesn't seem to be working, or some other part isn't transferring, let us know & we'll help you get things working again!

  • Transfering Photos and music between computers

I original purchased a macnotebook and now have an Ipad and Imac. I had thought cloud would allow me to share my photos and music at home between devices? I can't seem to get my Imac and Notebooks to share wirelessley? Could anyone give me any tips on how to get them linked up?
    Thanks. Nick

You might want to explore the concept of "build and export cache" in tools/cache.  Not all data is written to the file, some is held in an XMP file, which has same name as file.  You want them both to transfer at same time.
To see if you have XMP files click on view/show hidden files.
    Don't know much about collections.

  • What's the best way to transfer music between computers after iTunes Match?

I've pretty much uploaded everything to iTunes Match now, but my collection is across two computers and so it has merged everything together... Which is fine. However, I was planning on moving some of my items from one computer to another (i.e. from my smaller iTunes Library on the MacBook to the main iTunes Library on my PM G5).
Since it is all nicely synced now, I've discovered that if I use Home Sharing, then transferring the files manually seems to duplicate them on iTunes Match. So instead of doing this, I'm downloading them from the cloud on my PM and then deleting them on the MacBook once they're done... All good so far. However, a bunch of my music is in ALAC and so I don't want to do it this way because I'll end up downloading the files at 256kbps AAC instead.
So I just wanted to know, is there a good way of getting already-synced ALAC files from one machine to the other without having to get iTunes Match to re-sync them all over again?

You can preserve such metadata - worth an initial trial on simply moving as outlined - if metadata is lost you can reinstate by accessing the itunes library .xml file, to force itunes to read it you would need to clear the .itl file (if essential this will work but it is best avoided since it requires iTunes to rebuild your library from the .xml file).

  • Can you share music between computers and seperate ipods?

I would like to know if I could share my itunes with someone on a different computer and with a seperate ipod. Me and my sister (who's in college) would like to continue sharing music because we usually split the cost of cds.
My main question is: Is it possible to share one itunes account with multiple ipods that can be accessed from any computer?
What we would like to do is continue sharing music without having to wait until both of our ipods are in the same location and using the same computer. It would be nice if I could get into the same account as her and when she adds music I also receive the music and when I add music she gets it as well.
This may be an impossible request but I have been searching the forums for hours trying to figure it out. If someone could please respond, even if it's not possible, that would be VERY helpful.
    Thanks.

What you want is not supported with iTunes. You can both use the same account on different computers but what one downloads or adds will not be available to the other. If you are separated by location then CDs or DVDs recorded as data files are the best option. Record the files to disk then mail the disk. As long as you are both authorized to the same iTunes account I don't know of any issue with that.

  • Sychronizing music between computers

I download music to one "master" computer but then desire to sychronize the music from the master comuter my other "client" computers from time to time. How can I do this most efficiently? One option is to just erase the old itunes folder in each client computer each time and completely load in the library from the master. But, I have a lot of files and that will take a lot of time. Is there an easier way?

There are programs you can find to do this. This one is just an example but I'm sure if you put the question into your favourite search engine you'll come up with more: syncOtunes
