Question on Using Safari on Admin Acct vs. Standard Acct

Quick Safari question from a long time experienced PC guy who has just switched for the first time.
I am running v10.5.4 on a new iMac and have just started getting acclimated to Safari (v3.1.2) as I've been an exclusive FF user on Windows for years now. I'm impressed with the Safari so far but there is one thing I cannot figure out. If I go to certain websites in the ADMIN Account, let's use this one as an example (www.metrostrikers.com), I can see the dark blue background with the Strikers logo watermark, and the clouds in the banner with the Adidas logo, etc. However, when I go to my STANDARD Account (the one I plan to do my surfing on), I cannot see the background images. It is just white. Funny thing is, if I make my STANDARD Account an ADMIN for testing purposes, the behavior doesn't change - I STILL cannot see the background images in that account. So making an account ADMIN doesn't appear to help.
Please help if you can - It must be something I'm setting up wrong? I really want to like Safari, but I refuse to access the internet via a browser in any ADMIN account to do anything but update software. Surfing should always be done in a non-admin account, IMHO. But if I can't see simple things like backgrounds, I'm guessing I'll have to go get FF and start using that.
Any thoughts?
Jim

George, thanks for the preferences tip. I am not home right now, but will try that tonight (I thought I went thru all the preference settings w/o any luck, but maybe I missed that one).
As far as not using an admin account on any computer to surf, this is a mantra followed by many, at least in the PC world. Aside from making one give pause before downloading anything, the REAL benefit is in preventing nasties like trojans from installing themselves without the users knowledge. I concede that safe surfing will limit the exposure to some extent, but while I am surf savvy, I cannot guarentee that I or my wife (the kids accounts are managed and I restrict their sites) might accidently stumble onto a site where a nasty is waiting.
With that being said, perhaps trojans and bots and the like are not a factor with macs. I will admit I am just learning the security features, so I am not educated enough to comment. With Windows, however, the threat is real and ever present.
Thanks to all of you for answering. This HAS to be one of the best forums on the web.
Jim

  • Some question about  using  safari

I can't use the Safari to get into some school website ,such as ftp://10.10.192.163
    How can i do that?

some commonly website, such as baidu ,google, yahoo etc which i can surf them. But i can't get into  some shcool websites ,which just for the students who study here. For example ,ftp://10.10.240.163 and ftp://10.10.192.163 and so on.
I suspect you have the url's (web addresses) wrong.  I wouldn't think they would have a ftp: protocol designation but http: or https: instead.  Generally ftp is used for retrieving data from a source not viewing web pages.
FWIW, I just tried those IPs with http: and https: and all I got was a spinning cursor (using Firefox).  So either those IP addresses are wrong (but not wrong enough to error out) or the server associated with those IPs was down or hung at the time I tried it.  I think (a) you need to verify those url's and (b) why are these url's using IP numbers and not some kind of pathname for DNS lookup?

  • Favicon Question When Using Safari

Hi, Sometimes when I browse to a website in Safari that sites favicon shows up on the toolbar and sometimes it does not and I just get the generic blue globe.
I notice this on the Apple site for example. Sometimes I get the white Apple against the grey background favicon and sometimes I do not. Is there a reason for this? I would like to be able to bookmark the discussions forum with the Apple favicon if possible. I know this is not a big deal but it is one of those little quirks that I am curious about and have been trying to resolve. Many thanks
    dave

Safari, like most modern web browsers, will automatically download the favicon whenever you visit a site.
If you have particular sites that don't display a favicon, it's up to that site's author to create one and make it available to clients - it's not something you can control.
It would be very unusual for a site (e.g. 'discussions.apple.com') to sometimes have the icon an sometimes not. Do you have a particular site that does this?

  • Can't manage admin functions on site using Safari

I am in the process of working with a developer to add e-commerce functionality to our web site. This has entailed adding an administrative module to manage products, subscriptions, customers, etc. I continue to run into problems which the developer insists are related to my browser (I have also tried Firefox, with no luck). Do I have to buy a PC just to manage my site??

Yes, I can use any browser on my Mac, but the problem is that many of the functions that are required in the admin module for my site don't work using Safari or Foxfire. My developer claims that everything works perfectly using a Windows based browser. He even insists that he has had success using Foxfire on a Mac. Has anyone else experienced these problems?

  • While using safari, all quicktime related stuff revealed as a question mark

just got my new macbook today. i know i have quicktime, but many webpages i have looked show parts of it with a quicktime icon and a question mark. i am sure there is something i need to reconfigure, but i cannot seem to find out where to start.

This setup should enable you to view/hear pretty much everything:
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
    Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • I am still getting redirected to various web sites when using Safari.  My PC is not affected but my I phone and I pad are.  I have reset my router and changed my admin name and password.  I am still being redirected.

I am still getting redirected to various web sites when using Safari.  My PC is not affected but my I phone and I pad are.  I have reset my router and changed my admin name and password.  I am still being redirected.

Chances are you mis-typed a character in the Wifi password and the devices saved that information.  Now whenever you try to connect the device refers to the wrong password and the Jetpack does not accept your connection.  Tell your devices to forget the wireless connection and start over.
Once you enter the proper WiFi credentials the Jetpack will allow you to connect.

With TSM adware removal tool I was able to remove unknown software that was making ads pop up when using Safari. So the y don't pop up anymore. The problem now is that when I open safari It is still downloading websites and after awhile it freezes the browser. I have to constantly go to Safari Preferences to remove them and then the browser will start working again. What can I do to stop this?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Is there a way to force "desktop view" on my iPad 1 when using Safari?

Google, in their control frenzy, has now changed iGoogle to default to Tablet view on iPads. Why??? Here is one solution but it does not use Safari:
    Question:
Is there a secret to getting the old igoogle homepage back, or is it gone for good on the iPad 2?  I still have the homepage on my Mac, so the problem is just with the iPad.  Any help anybody can give to get the home page back would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:This issue is with the Tablet view. You can switch to Classic view at the bottom, but as soon as you type anything in the url bar you get reverted to Tablet. I have the Atomic Browser installed on my iPad and have set it to identify itself as a desktop. iGoogle loads fine on that. I am not aware of any such setting for Safari on the iPad.
Google fails to understand that we do not need sub featured pages for our tablets. Tablets work fine with the desktop versions. They have probably concluded that iGoogle pages are too busy for tablets and so have disabled it. Tablet search has been significantly degraded by Goggle with elimination of the pinch and zoom and cached features. It should be possible to make a sticky setting change to Classic view on tablets. Most other settings stick, but not the Classic view. I dont think Google get it anymore.
Is there a way to force Safari ,on an iPad, to do this?

The website may alter its page display based on the browser ID that is transmitted to the site from your browser. Some browsers on the iPad like iCab allow you change the browser ID to something desktop-oriented. Safari does not provide this capability.

  • Can't copy & paste image into email using Safari

Just what it says. If I use firefox, the image (not just the link) appears in the reply text box of the email I'm writing.

I don't use GMail, so I can't answer your question. Maybe someone else can. Try the GMail user forums.

  • Sync a tasks or To-Do list - a basic workaround using Safari Bookmarks

I resisted the iPhone when it came out but, being free with 02 in the UK, my resistance crumbled. I love it but am still flabbergasted by the lack of Tasks synchronisation. I had downloaded a simple 3rd party app, but this deleted all my tasks when it updated - of course, I didn't have a backup on my Mac.
Before you get excited, this has nothing to do with Tasks in iCal. Sorry. This is a fix, of sorts, which will allow you to have a rudimentary tasks list which can be edited on either iPhone or Mac; most importantly, they can be synced.
I don't have Windows so can't say whether this works with it or not - I imagine it should work using Safari for Windows.
    1) On the Mac, go to 'Show all Bookmarks' in Safari.
    2) Make a new Bookmarks folder anywhere. I put mine in the Bookmarks Bar, and called it 'To-Do'.
    3) Populate it with bookmarks. I did this by dragging the current Safari URL into it, about 10 times.
    4) Edit the names of the bookmarks, so as to leave it essentially - but not totally - blank. I renamed all the Bookmarks "." (period/full stop).
    5) After the period on each bookmark, enter the task item. It will look like e.g. ". Car service before 14/8". Repeat as necessary. You now will have a list of bookmarks, each renamed as tasks.
    6) Ensure that in iTunes, the iPhone is set to sync Safari bookmarks.
    7) Sync.
    8) You can now access your tasks on the iPhone, relatively simply, by accessing the bookmarks through Safari. Connectivity is unimportant as you will not be selecting the tasks/bookmarks/URL, merely looking at the list.
    9) The tasks/bookmarks can be edited or deleted using the Edit function. (There's a surprise). You can of course delete the entire task when completed but this will necessitate re-populating the new folder with more bookmarks. I just delete the name of the task up to, but not including, the period. Using the Edit function, you can also re-arrange the order of your tasks/bookmarks.
That's it. Obviously it's not great and has limited functionality and no ability to archive. But, if like me, you just want a basic task list, easily accessible on either platform, editable and 'syncable', then it works surprisingly well.

Thanks! If you will allow, I have a follow up question: do you have any experience with any particular app? If not, is it fairly easy to find an app like this?

  • I'm still using safari 4 beta

    Hi all,
I'm still using safari 4 beta because of the tab on top which i really like it alot
I've tried the official one before last month but turn back to the beta version till now.
In the official version it takes alot of cache that I think it store every page of site that I've visited into to the cache that can easily shoot over gigs within few days, yet this is not happening in the beta version.
Obviously things work differently in the official version now.
Seeing that it has been sometime already that now 4.0.2 patch just came out.
I was thinking am I in a danger zone still hanging on with the beta version
or do i have no choice but to update to official version and try to get used to the old tab bar style

    Hi jp:
If I understand your question, you mean the "top sites" feature...........
is there anyway to stop the webpage preview?
None that I am aware of. I have suggested that as an enhancement/change through the bug reporter.
Incidentally, when you are satisfied with your responses, please mark the thread "solved" so that others will not bother to read it to try to help.

  • Just started using Safari, 5.1 on Win XP.  Places where there used to be check boxes now have little buttons with triangles on them; clicking them seems to have no visible effect.  Help!

I just started using Safari, using Safari 5.1 on Win XP.  Any place where there used to be a check box, there's now a little button with a triangle on it.  The triangle changes orientation as I move the mouse cursor around, but there is no visible change if I click on it.  Yet it appears that I must click on it to check, or uncheck, the box; I just can't tell whether it's checked.  If I can't get this to work better, I'll have to give up on Safari.  Please help.  (Note: there's one at the head of this thing saying "Mark this discussion as a Question - this encourages people to answer for points and helps you track answers."  I clicked on it, but don't know whether it's checked or not.  That's a fairly minor example.)

Can you provide an SSCCE that demonstrates this behavior?

  • Referencing "image" form elements using Safari

I'm trying to write an Applescript which uses Safari's do JavaScript feature to reference the elements of forms in web pages. I've run into a puzzle in cases where the page designer chose to use an element of type "image" for form submission. It looks to me as though input tags with a type attribute of "image" are not being represented in the JavaScript elements array for the form.
Here's a mini-script to display a list of the element types within a form on a web page:
    set formName to "loginForm"
    set types to {}
tell application "Safari" to tell front document
set elementCount to do JavaScript "document." & formName & ".length"
repeat with elementNumber from 0 to elementCount - 1
copy (do JavaScript "document." & formName & ".elements[" & (elementNumber as text) & "].type") to end of types
    end repeat
    end tell
    set text item delimiters to {space & "/" & space}
    display dialog types as text
Before running, I find a web page with a login box, and look at the page code to find the name of the form in question, in this case "loginForm" and put that name in the first line of the script. Then I bring the page in question to the front and start the script.
For one page, I got the result "hidden / hidden / text / text / hidden / checkbox / password / checkbox / submit" and when I checked this against the page code, I found it was correct: there were nine <input> tags in the form, and their type attributes were in that order. But for another page, the home page of a major credit card, I got the result "hidden / text / password / select-one / checkbox" when I was expecting "hidden / text / password / select-one / image / checkbox." I've tried this with other pages and the behavior seems consistent: all types of <input> tags are represented in the elements arrays of their forms, except <input type="image"> which are always left out.
So, is this a bug or a feature? Or am I just unclear on the concept of the elements array? And if so, is there another way to find the submit element of a form when it is an "image"?
Incidentally, I'm not trying to be cagey by leaving out links to the pages I've tested. I'm just fairly new to discussion groups and was worried that linking to third-party pages for what amounts to a science experiment might not be the best net etiquette. If someone knows better, I will accept instruction. I hope my question is clear anyway, and there is no shortage of pages for experimental subjects.

True, it is not a matter of AppleScript per se. I did look for an Apple forum on JavaScript but didn't see one. OS X Technologies > AppleScript looked like my best bet: I've seen quite a few postings here where the answer to a question involved JavaScript, Unix shell scripts, PHP, etc., so I don't think I'm far off the mark. And I didn't think of a non-Apple JavaScript forum because I don't think my question is about JavaScript per se either: I suspect it is about Apple's implementation of JavaScript.
You're quite right about what I'm trying to do. I have a script that transfers secure data from my keychains into web forms, and there's really no need to trigger the form submittal programmatically when I have a perfectly good mouse and index finger, but it's become an enjoyable intellectual challenge to make it happen automatically. Incidentally, what you suggest may actually be a little dangerous these days: at any rate, that simple document.formName.submit(); method is more likely to fail than succeed.
Short version: physically clicking on a submit button on a web page in the conventional way is likely to invoke a lot of validity checking code in the page before the form is actually submitted. If, for example, there is a credit card number in the form, there will probably be code to do a Luhn checksum to make sure you've entered a real credit card number. If the validation fails, the submittal can be aborted. Using the .submit() method, by itself, does not trigger this validation code. (I fervently believe there is an excellent reason for this, but I've no idea what it might be.) Because of this, the form may be submitted with hidden element values that quite probably reflect the lack of validation. The server detects the anomaly, and instead of logging you in, it sends you to an error page. That's probably the best that can happen. I can think of worse.
My script has provisions to "play by the rules" by invoking any such validation code, and respecting its decision whether or not to proceed with submittal. I have the script working very well, but there's always the possibility of some web page designer doing something which I have not correctly anticipated. (In fact, since one possible place to put validation code invocations is in the "onclick" handler of the submit button, and since I'm having trouble finding some of these, I know I'm not covering all bases.)
A much more foolproof strategy would be to just simulate the physical clicking of a button. This is straightforward:
    set submitButton to "document.formName.submitButtonName"
tell application "Safari" to tell front document
do JavaScript submitButton & ".focus();" & linefeed & submitButton & ".click();"
    end tell
And to date I've never seen this method fail. But to do it, I have to have the name, or the array index, of the submit element of the form. I thought I knew how to find this, in the form's elements array, but I've run into a strange phenomenon. There are two kinds of submit buttons in forms: type="submit" and type="image". The type="submit" buttons do appear in the elements array, but the type="image" buttons apparently do not. And since web designers love to spiff up their pages, type="image" seems to be far more common these days.
I suspect this is just something that was accidentally left out of Apple's implementation of the JavaScript document model. I just thought I would ask if anyone else was aware of this, and could confirm or disconfirm. If no one does in the next day or so, I will bring the matter to the attention of the good people at Apple Bug Reporter.
    All the best.
