Question on using Virtual PC with Access

Right now I'm using 2 systems at my office, Linux SuSE and XP, both on different machines. I just ordered a PowerBook G4 and will be upgrading it to 2GB memory when it comes in. The PB is to replace my SuSE box and I'm wondering if I will need keep my XP box as well. My office runs a proprietary software program for manufacturing purposes, and it runs on XP and uses .Net along with Access.
My question (finally) is if I can run this on my PB or if I need Virtual PC? If I need VPC, will it work on my PB and will it be pretty slow (not a lot of processing power is needed nor is the program terribly graphic oriented)? My concern is the .Net and Access usage.

You'll need VPC (or keep the XP PC). If you're getting a PowerBook G4, yes it will be slow(er). If you're getting an MacBook Pro, you won't be able to use Virtual PC.
If it is very graphical oriented, I'd stick with keeping a PC around.

Multiple questions about using iWeb '09 with my Host Excellence, GoDaddy & Storenvy Accounts. Can you Help?

Hello, my name is Luis Diaz and I have always appreciated the help here in the iWeb community. I've been using iWeb for a long time. For some reason my usernames are not working lately - LuisDiazArt or RabidArt)
I updated my domain service with Host Excellence before MobileMe expired and thank you guys for the help with that. So far it's been a flawless service and because of that I'm very happy. I also have all my domains in GoDaddy. They have been very helpful
Okay I'm going to try to explain my current problem. I'm trying to create a subdomain in GoDaddy for my website: LuisDiazArt.com
I went and added a Subdomain in the Control Panel as: store.LuisDiazArt.com The subdomain suppose to mask my store: luisdiaz.storenvy.com
I thought by adding this subdomain it would make all the addresses look similar (and more clean) just in case someone gets lost along the way.
So what's happening after I waited an hour is I'm getting: http://store.luisdiazart.com/LuisDiazArt.com/Art_of_Luis_Diaz_%7C_LuisDiazArt.co m.html
I'm getting the huge and familair long addresses and it is not pointing to my store, but to the homepage.
Did I do something wrong or do I not understand something fully about subdomains? I thought you can make a subdomain point to another site. Perhaps it can't be done the way I'm thinking about this.
So to fix this issue I am thinking about making a duplicate website with a different domain name (RabidArt) and mask it with LuisDiazArt (this is site name I use on business card and everything else). After that make a subdomain with the same: http://store.luisdiazart.com
Perhaps this may fix the problem.
So to do this I may need to add another site onto my account (Basic and not Business) on HostExcellence.
So my other questions are:
Can I have multiple domains or websites using iWeb on a Basic Host Excellence Account? I checked out a few websites, but couldn't really find out if I can have multiple domains/websites using iWeb on Host Excellence with my current account.
I do know how to make a new duplicate site, but do you publish it the same way as you would with the regular site or do I have to so something different?
Hopefully the problem can be fixed not having to do a new site and maybe it was something I did wrong when I added a subdomain.

To add more domains you need to upgrade your account.
To have a sub domain for your store you need to create a separate site in iWeb and upload these files to the store.luisdiazart.com folder.
The files for the main site go in the luisdiazart folder.
Use an external hyperlink to link one to the other.

Question about using VMware Fusion with mutiple user accounts on the mac

I know this isn't a Fusion forum as such, but wondered if anyone knew the answer to this problem. I installed the latest version of fusion on my machine and a copy of windows XP. It's very good and am impressed with the ease and speed of it. However, I am the administrator and my 3 children have user accounts on the same computer. When my son logs in to his user account and starts up Fusion to do some homework on a windows only program, there isn't a virtual machine to start up. Does this mean that using fusion I can only use one mac user account? Or can I move the windows folder to a location for all to use, or is there a setting that I need to alter in Fusion? Perhaps I need to install windows again on his account. If so will this cause other potential problems and unnecessarily hog hard drive space. I would prefer fusion to boot camp because I need both windows and mac at the same time. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you ask the VMware Community?
My guess is yes, you need to put it in a Public folder or outside your account. XP doesn't take a lot of disk space, so maybe they should have their own (but then you need another copy/license).
You may need to edit one of the prefs files pointing to the image, unless an alias or symbolic link will do.
VirtualBox is free VM and is probably more than able to handle their needs.
Probably need / want to create a new Windows user account while you are at it.

Using Virtual InfoProvider with DBConnect

Hi all,
I'd want to use a virtual InfoProvider in order to acces Teradata database live. Can I use DBConnect? I know that it is possible to use UDC with the version 3.5. But in my case, we have the version 3.0.x. Is there somedy that can help me to align me with the best solution or some documentation.

As I wrote, I have allready set the cache Mode to "0 Cache is Inactive". But this is the the general data cache i.e. reuse of data among users this is not deep enough. I need to make sure that each and every query step goes to the DB for new data.

Question about using TX FM with Win

I am using the MuVo TX FM 256 with Windows 98, and so I am using Windows Explorer to transfer files, (I have not installed Creative software). There's no "Safely Remove Hardware" item that I know of. Is there anything wrong with just removing the player from the USB dri've without "warning" the machine in any way? I've been doing it this way for about one week now, without problems that I can see, (though the LCD screen sometimes darkens upon removal).
Another question, though this one is not something I'm immediately concerned with:When I fast forward in an mp3 longer than 7 minutes, the time does not update, (it shows the same time), until I let it "play" again, at which time it reads the correct time. Since it reads the correct time at all times except when it's fast forwarding or rewinding, it's nothing more than an inconvenience. Btw, it's firmware ..0, and I'd rather not change it since this works well enough, after reading about some of the firmware problems.

All the "safely remove" function does is shut the device down properly and close any program links with it.
If you aren't using the device at the time chances are things will be OK.

Question about using Apple Mail with Verizon

Not sure if this is an Apple or Verizon question, but leaning toward the latter so here it is...
On my MacBook Pro, running OS 10.8.3, I have several accounts. Each has its own Verizon username e.g. [email protected], [email protected] etc. Everything had been working fine but last night I had an issue sending email from, say, the username1 account. I went to the username account to test it out and it worked fine - I sent an email to username1 in Mail and username1 had no problem receiving it. But username1 couldn't send email - it gave an error message about the outgoing server, asking me if I wanted to try another one.
Now the odd thing is that the outgoing server name was (and has always been) exactly the same for username1 and username. But when I selected outgoing.verizon.net:username1 instead of the usual one, it was able to send email. I'm not sure why that other server name was listed as an option, but glad that it was there.
So my question is why would two accounts on the same computer have to use two different Verizon outgoing mail servers in order to send email?

By this time you should be using only the recommended settings across all your devices and platforms. As far as I can determine, all devices, operating systems, mail clients, etc., have been successfully configured using the new recommended settings. There are indeed individuals who are still finding issues, but the general consensus among experienced users seems to be that the issues reported are related to individual settings and devices, and do not stem from the server side.
BTW I don't at all mean to suggest that a particular user is anything less than capable. I'm just stating what I believe is the situation today.

Question on use of NIO with je

Could you clarify the problems with NIO and situations it shouldn't be used? Currently we are using it with 3.2 and haven't run into any issues but I don't know if we are just getting lucky.

What I recall is that the NIO JVM bugs were related to GC. Direct memory is not managed like ordinary heap memory, so a separate (and buggy) mechanism is used in the JVM. The symptoms were very slow GC and OOME. It's possible that Sun has fixed these problems since then, but as Charles said there is no measurable performance benefit for direct memory in JE, so it is no longer used in JE. As Charles says, ByteBuffers are still used, but this is not a use of direct memory.

You can buy a factory unlocked on direct from Apple sim free, make sure you get the right one and not just a contract free one. I am sure one of our US members will be able to give you the price.

Problems using Oracle ODBC with Access

Oracle thick client 10.2.0.1
When I test my ODBC connection in the Windows ODBC Admin Utility, it tests out fine. However whenever i try using a connection or creating within Access, I get error: "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver for Oracle][Oracle]ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified (#12154) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed IM006 0 [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed (#0)"

There's a known issue where 12154 occurs when an application has parenthesis in it's path, and MSAcces (being 32 bit) would get installed by default to c:\program files(x86).
Patching the client to 10204 should resolve this issue for you.

Question about using a Projector with MacBook Pro

Sorry if this is the wrong post location, but I figured people here would be the most knowledgeable about the topic.
I'm looking into getting a portable projector for under $450 that will work with my 2009 MacBook Pro for: a) watching instructional videos and b) doing some web surfing and a little programing. I can't get a monitor because I need portability and a picture at least 30" due to some visions issues.
I've looked into a few including the Optoma PK301 (sold at apple) and the Samsung 410ME (higher lumens, but lower res). Most of them have a max resolution of 800x600 and I'm wondering how that will appear on a 30"-45" projection? Will websites wider than 800 pixels be cut off? Does that mean a video with a resolution of 960x540 will be cut off or look funny?
The PK301 has a Native WVGA (854 x 480), but "supports" WXGA (1280 x 800) through VGA adapter; HD (1080i) through HDMI. So how will that render on the wall?

Cannot use "Open with Access"

I have some users that are trying to use the Open with Access feature to open lists in Access. I have installed Access 2010 on all of the computers trying to use this feature, but it only works on Vista and 7. I can't get it to work on XP.
Is this feature not supported in XP/IE 8? Does it require a newer version of IE?

Using Entity Framework with SQL Azure - Reliability

I'm writing an application for Windows Azure. I'm using Entity Framework to access SQL Azure. Due to throttling and other mechanisms in SQL Azure, I need to make sure that my code performs retries if an SQL statement has failed. I'm trying to come up with
a solid method to do this.
(In the code below, ObjectSet returns my EFContext.CreateObjectSet())
Let's say I have a function like this:
public Product GetProductFromDB(int productID)
return ObjectSet.Where(item => item.Id = productID).SingleOrDefault();
Now, this function performs no retries and will fail sooner or later in SQL Azure. A naive workaround would be to do something like this:
public Product GetProductFromDB(int productID)
for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
try
return ObjectSet.Where(item => item.Id = productID).SingleOrDefault();
catch
Of course, this has several drawbacks. I will retry regardless of SQL failure (retry is waste of time if it's a primary key violation for instance), I will retry immediately without any pause and so on.
My next step was to start using the Transient Fault Handling library from Microsoft. It contains RetryPolicy which allows me to separate the retry logic from the actual querying code:
public Product GetProductFromDB(int productID)

While this is a step forward, I still have to remember to use the RetryPolicy class whenever I want to access the database via Entity Framework. In a team of several persons, this is a thing which is easy to miss. Also, the code above is a bit messy in my
opinion.
What I would like is a way to enforce that retries are always used, all the time. The Transient Fault Handling library contains a class called ReliableSQLConnection but I can't find a way to use this with Entity Framework.
Any good suggestions to this issue?

Query ID in Virtual Cube with services-Function module

Hi,
I am using virtual cube with services linked to a function module.
The function module has fixed parameters(such as infoprovider name). None of these parameters consists of query information such as query ID OR queryname .
Do any one know how to determine query which was executed this function module?
