Question on video edit Elements Premier 8

Can the software
crop and pan within a video?  I know other software can do this but can Elements P 8?  If so how?  I
want to try it first and then activate the product I purchased in the store if it can do it.
Thanks
Eric

Eric,
I think that the answer will be yes, that Premiere Elements can crop and pan within a video.  However, consider that it you crop too much or use too small a portion of the frame when panning, your image quality may get signficiantly worse.
For this question and future Premiere Elements questions, I recommend that you post your question over on the forum specific to Premiere Elements at http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premiere_elements
At that forum, also take notice of the information about a Premiere Elements 8 update

I have been advised to get a full size case rather than a midi. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

The advice to get a bigger case is correct. That GTX 670 will be a very tight squeeze inside that Antec 902 case due to the way the interior of that case itself was designed: The hard drives will interfere with the motherboard's expansion slots, restricting the length of those cards that will fit to only 9.5 inches long. Unfortunately, although a reference GTX 670 is about 9 inches long, higher-end GPUs will not fit if the PCI-e x16 slot is inline with an installed hard drive.
Speaking of the GTX 670, it is clearly overkill on any system that's equipped with only 16GB of RAM total. Plus, you will need a third-party CPU cooler in order to perform any overckocking whatsoever of the CPU. Unfortunately, the Corsair Vengeance heat spreaders are extremely tall (over 50mm high!) that they will prevent proper installation of any decent tower-style CPU air cooler, especially if all four DIMM slots on the motherboard are being used. You will need 32GB of RAM plus at least a good third-party CPU air cooler such as a Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO (and overclock the CPU to over 4.0GHz) in order for that system to utilize anywhere near the performance capability of the GTX 670.
Third, you do not need that particular Sound Blaster card at all: Its sound quality is surprisingly poor for a such a pricey discrete add-on sound card (or put it this way, it does not sound anywhere close to sufficiently better than on-motherboard audio to justify its cost).

I am a professional photographer of many years standing and at the moment I have a student for 12 months, who I am teaching how to use various Adobe programs, but to introduce her to video editing, I have purchased Adobe Premier Elements 13 which is less complicated than the Premier Pro that I use. The program works perfectly, except for one thing.... when adding a title to the short video sequence we are working with, if I use a particular font (Metallophile Sp8) which I obtained from my Adobe Typekit, it crashes the program,.... all other fonts work perfectly....can anybody help me please?

    clivephoto
What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 13 running on? And what video card/graphics card does this computer use?
From your description, can I assume that this Mettallophile Sp8 font is being recognized by Premiere Elements 13 to the extent
that it can be seen and remains seen in Titler's list of font choices - even after the crashes?
If you opened a new project, imported nothing, and created a text title in the Titler with this Mettallophile Sp8 font, does the program crash?
Please review the following which discuss fonts and Premiere Elements and determine if anything in it helps.

  • Getting 15" MBP to do some HD video editing - Canon 5D mkii.  Premier Elements or Final Cut?

With a new 15" MacBook Pro, what would be the suggestion for video editing software - will be doing HD with the Canon 5D mkii.  I am doing ostly some family stuff and a few things for work - training pieces, nothing longer than about 15 minutes in time.  I don't need the Pro stuff as a lot of it will go unused due to lack of skill and need.  I have iMovie 8 and I need more than that.  Final Cut Express is discontinued, so I am looking at Adobe Premier Elements 10 as a possibility.  It is not a matter of money, but I want like a middle of the road software, with a good laptop (need the portability). Also, shoudl I ge the top of the line upgraded 15" MBP or spring for the Retina display with the SSD option???

I have both Adobe's Premier Pro CS6 and Final Cut Pro X installed on both my Mac Pro 8-core and a new Macbook Pro with Retina Display (2.7 GHz, 768 GB flash storage, and 16 GB of RAM).  I am not a professional editor, but I am serious about editing video as a hobby.  On both my Mac Pro and on my MBPR, Final Cut Pro X is very very stable, and performs exceptionally well.  Since it's introduction about 18 months ago Apple has offered a number of free updates to FCP X which have really improved its functionality and stability.  FCP X has a unique trackless paradigm for video editing (the magnietic timeline) which I really like and find helpful in speeding up the editing workflow.  However, FCP X (like all video editing programs) does have a learning curve and I recommend that you purchase  and watch the training tutorials from Ripple Training or from other good sources such as lynda.com.  It can be a frustrating and unprofitable experience to simply jump into FCP X and try to begin editing your Canon 5D Mark II footage without first taking the time to learn the fundamentals of the program.
These comments are also true for Adobe's Premier Elements (a simpler version of Adobe's Premier Pro editing package).   I have not yet used Premiere Pro CS6 to any significant extent on my MBPR but I have edited several projects (indcluding ones using 5D Mark II footage) on my Mac Pro using PP CS5 and CS5.5.  I have never had a problem with the stability of the program.  However, a number of Mac users are reporting problems using PP CS6 on the Adobe PP Forum.
As for advice on whether to purchase the top of the line upgrade 15 in. MBP or the MBPR, I would say that is a matter of personal choice. The high resolution display of the MBPR makes for a great editing experience since you can see a full 1080p video in FCP X's output window without any scaling at all.   The flash storage of the MBPR means that you will be able to play numerous streams of 1080p video simultaneously without the need for purchasing external Raid arrays.  I purchased my MBPR for video editing purposes and I certianly have no regrets about the choice.
One final comment.  Most of the time my MBPR runs quietly and reasonably cool (CPU temps of 45-75 C.).  However, when you render a movie in FCP X, be prepared to hear the fan speeds go to their maximum speed (which is dfinitely audible but not unpleasant)  and for the cpu temperature to rise as high as 100 C. or slightly higher.  I have never had the MBPR do a thermal shutdown while rendering video, but it does get hot, and a laptop cooler support for the MBPR is a necessity when using it for high intensity cpu tasks like video editing.

  • Question on Trial version of Premier Elements 12

This  is  my  first  effort  at  creating  a  video  with  this  new  program.  I  have  several  questions  but,  we'll  do  one  at  a  time.   First ...  When  I  create  a  transition  a  "banner"  shows  up  on  the  screen  saying  "created  by  premier 12 trial version.  Is  that  going  to  be  there  on  the  "finished  product ?  It's  very  annoying  and,  blocks  everything.     Second ....  When  I  looked  thru  the  photos  I  ADDED  some  captions  to  the  bottom  of  the  photos.  However,  the  TEXT  doesn't  show  up  when  creating  a  movie.  What  am  I  doing  wrong ?

Prof.    I  am  trying  multiple  things  her  so,  bear  with  me.
lets  go  back  to  a  discussion  we  had  yesterday  about  text  on  pictures.
I  believe  I  have  to  be  in  "expert  mode  to  do  all  of  the  things  you  asked  me  to  try...
I  went  into  expert  and,  was  then  able  to  access  these  items.  I'm  working  on  trying
    all  the  things  you  suggested.
However, what  about  doing  all  this  text  stuff  in  a  a  naration   instead.  Would  that  be  easier ?
Bill  Hunt  had  given  me  a  way  to  do  that  earlier  but,  I  was  a  bit  overwhelmed  and  lost  that  text.
Maybe,  that  might  be  a  more  "personable" way  to  do  this  ????

As they say, this is just a test
    1. Open Premiere Elements 12 to the Expert workspace.
    2. Import a photo from the hard drive into the program via the program's Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets. And, from Project Assets, drag your photo to the beginning of Video Track 1.
3.With your Timeline Indicator (Blue head on Red Stem) at the beginning of the Timeline, go to Text/New Text/Default Text and click on Default Text to open the Titler which will have four sections (Text, Styles, Animation, and Shapes). Click on the Text section tab. Notice that, when the Titler opened, the program automatically placed the title on the Timeline at the position of the Timeline Indicator.
    a. There are a variety of ways to start typing, replacing the default "Add Text" with what you want. What I usually do is to go to the right edge of the Add Text default with the mouse cursor and left click/drag from right to left across Add Text to put a gray cast over it and then type with the horizontal type tool. When I am ready to move the text around, then I select the Selection Tool in the trio of tools (horizontal text tool, vertical text tool, selection tool) in the Text Section and use it to select the text. When you make the text selection, you should see a bounding box around the text for you to use for resizing and such.
    b. Important add ons...after the Titler closes, to open the title again for more editing, double click the title on the Timeline...when you want to close the Titler, look to the top right of that Adjustments Panel. You should see two tiny gray arrows point right. Click those arrows to close the Titler.
Here is some reading material for your to review after you have done some mini test runs with the above.

The last three may be more than you want now since your focus is on captions, but maybe hold on to them for another time when you want to get deeper into the Premiere Elements Titler opportunities.
Please review and let me know if I went too far beyond what you sought. I will back up if necessary.
Also, please take a look at "captions as text" in Elements Organizer Slideshow Editor preferences.
    Thanks.

  • Multiple Hard Drives for Video Editing with Premiere Elements 8?

I'm using Premiere Elements 8 for video editing. These are the specs I'm using:
The camcorder I used to shoot the footage is a Sony Handycam with  model number HDR-SR12. It's a digital HD video camera recorder that  shoots in NTSC 1920x1080i HD  recording. The footage was shot with AVC  HD  9M (HQ), which records in higher image quality mode. The  video  camera is connected to my computer through a USB cable.
The  computer  itself is a Windows 7 desktop computer. The CPU is an HP  Pavilion Elite  HPE-150f PC with Intel Core i7-860 processor. I imported  the video into  Premiere by selecting "File" --> "Get Media From"  and then choosing the third  option from the top.
My import  option is NTSC/AVCHD/Full HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel, which matches the  specs of the camera I shot the footage with.
Even with the patch 8.0.1 that should be preventing crashing, the program keeps crashing upon startup with one specific video project. Using the exact same video files for that project, I recreated the video, with Elements, and never ran into the problem. Both times, I had the patch installed.
At the moment, I am using only the single internal hard drive for everything (software, OS, video editing, etc.). It is 1 TB in size. However, I am informed that one hard drive is not recommended for video editing, and that I need at least two hard drives, one for OS and one specifically for video editing. I was also informed of FireWire 800 and eSata; however, it does not appear that my computer supports eSata.
Can this problem be resolved if I have an external hard drive and connect it to my computer with FireWire 800 (which the computer supports)? If not, what can be done so this problem doesn't arise in the future?
    Thanks for the help.

When you import the footage is there a red line across the whole of the timeline?

As you have the recreated project working fine I'd be inclined to put this down as a one-off glitch. If it happens again on a different project then it may be more worrying. You may want to consider using save-as to create multiple versions of your project (note this does NOT duplicate the source clips - so you won't be eating up much extra disk space). You could for example use save-as to create a daily version - ProjectName-Mon, ProjectName-Tue etc....

  • Video editing & playback issues: Adobe Premiere Elements 8

    Hello all,
I have made several attempts at transfering HD video  files from my camcorder to my PC and then editing.
When I try to play the transferred file, it is a little choppy and then gets worse as I edit it.
    Here are my specs/config:
    System:
    HP Pavilion a6720y
    Windows Vista 64 bit
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 440
AMD Phenon 9550 Quad Core 2.2Ghz
    6GB RAM
    640GB SATA drive, 7200 rpm
    Camera:
    Sony HDR-XR150
    Editing Software:
    Adobe Premiere Elements 8
I copy the video files from the camcorder to the computer via USB 2.0.
When I connect the camera directly to the TV the video plays without any issues.  So I know the AVCHD files are "good" and I suspect they are also possibly "good" on my hard drive, but just cannot be played or edited appropriately for some reason.
One input I received was that due to the nature of AVCHD files, I should convert the video to "I-frame codec" and then edit.  Can Adobe Premiere Elements do this?
    Any other thoughts/ideas?
    Thanks for any help.

    6GB RAM

    640GB SATA drive, 7200 rpm
I edit AVCHD (with PPro) with THREE hard drives
My 3 hard drives are configured as...
    1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and all program installs
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 swap file and video project files
When I create a project on #2 drive, the various work files follow,
so my boot drive is not used for the media cache folder and files

Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything
I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit
Depending on your exact hardware (motherboard brand & model AND USB2 enclosure brand & model AND external hard drive brand & model) AND the type of video file, you may... or may NOT... be able to use an external USB2 hard drive for SD (Standard Definition) video editing
Steve Grisetti in the Premiere Elements forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856208 and Jim Simon in the Premiere Pro forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856433 use USB externals for editing
A USB3 hard drive connected to a motherboard with USB3 is supposed to be fast enough for video editing (I don't have such, so don't know) but eSata DOES have a fast enough data transfer for video editing... I have not used the eSata Dock below... for reference only, YMMV and all the usual disclaimers

Have purchased a new computer but can not install elements 12 since it has been installed on an older laptop.  This is a one time user program, is there a code that can be put in or a small fee to pay to be able to use the program again.  Never installed the video editing and hoping this can be installed with no problem.

If the laptop is still connected Launch Elements in Expert Mode. Go to the help menu and sign-out. That will deactivate usage on the laptop.

  • Bunch of questions for 2k+ video editing setup. Please help if possible

Hello everyone, I'm in the process of building a desktop (mainly for video editing -- with some graphic design and gaming here and there). I'll be working with Canon 5D III raw footage (Magic Lantern) and typical dslr h.264 for the time being. Eventually I'll be working with 2.5k and possibly 4k. I mainly use Premiere Pro and syncing with AE, though with this new build I will start on DaVinci as well.
This is what I have OR considering thus far:
(Just purchased) CPU: Intel Core i7-4930K 3.4GHz 6-Core Processor
(Just purchased) Motherboard: Asus X79 DELUXE ATX LGA2011 Motherboard
(just purchased) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB Video Card
(just purchased) Power Supply: SeaSonic G-750 750W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
(already owned) Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
(already owned) Storage: Samsung 840 Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
(considering) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
    (considering) Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
(considering) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive
(considering) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive
(consdering) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive
(considering) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)
    computer tower -- very undecided
My main concern right now is setting up the hard drives. I've been reading and researching on how other editors are structuring their system, but it seems everyone has slightly different setup. So I'm somewhat confused on a smooth and optimal setup. Is this a good setup:
    1) Samsung 840 250gb -- for OS/apps
    2) Samsung 840 evo 120gb -- for project files/media cache/scratch disk?
    3) 2x Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200rpm in Raid 0 -- for meda/raw files?
    4) WD Caviar 3TB 5400rpm -- for exports/general storage/etc
Is that okay? Should I get another HDD to separate project files, media cache, and/or scratch disk? Is Raid 0 necessary? Most likely I'll be using onboard raid option and I never done raid before. The reason why I'm going with the Barracuda is because there's a deal on them right now.
**note: I have 5 external hard drives for backup and backing up the backups. I'm not too worried about the reliability of Raid 0 if it means I can get quicker performance.
Another question, can anyone recommend a tower that's under $150? I've been looking at a bunch and just can't decide. I live in NYC and my room does not have AC so having a tower with good airflow is a must. Also my roommate has a cat and I would like to have dust filters (though not as important as I can just buy aftermarket, but having a tower that comes with some would be nice)
Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance!

All my parts have arrived and I'm all set to put together, but I have one more question. According to Tweaker's page:
Media cache & Media cache database files, created on importing media into a project. They contain indexed, conformed audio and peak files for waveform display.
Typically small files, but lots of them, so in the end they still occupy lots of disk space.
Preview (rendered) files, created when the time-line is rendered for preview purposes, the red bar turned to green. Read all the time when previewing the time-line.
Project files, including project auto-save files, that are constantly being read and saved as auto-save files and written when saving your edits.
Media files, the original video material ingested from tape or card based cameras. Typically long files, only used for reading, since PR is a non-destructive editor.
Export files, created when the time-line is exported to its final delivery format. These files are typically only written once and often vary in size from several hundred KB to tens of GB.
1(media cache) should be on the fastest volume and 5(exports) can be on the slowest. Now I have 3 SSD -- Samsung 840 Evo 250GB, Samsung 840 256GB, and Samsung 840 Evo 120GB... I plan on using the non Evo 250gb for OS/programs. That leaves the 120gb and 250gb (both Evo) for media cache and preview. My question is, which one of the two (media cache & preview) will pile up space faster? Should I put meda cache on the 250gb and preview on 120gb? Or flip flop them?
    Sorry for all the questions.

  • Lightroom 5 Video Editing Question

I would like to use one software program that can do a single project that combines pics and video.  I know Lightroom 5 will handle my photo editing needs, but can it splice my video, add an audio track to my combined video/pic project, and even add some text over the project? If not, what should I use with Lightroom 5--Premiere Elements?  Or does Photoshop Elements work more seamlessly with Premiere Elements? I don't need a lot of video editing capability--really just splicing, adding audio, and adding text on top of the video.
Thanks in advance for any answers!

You will find Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements much more flexible. LR5 can mix video & stills but the slideshow module is limited when it comes to adding text and it’s only possible to edit video using the quick develop buttons in the library module, not the full range of tools in the develop module. Only a single audio file is permitted.
On Windows you can start in PSE, adding text, transitions and pan and zoom to stills (if required) and then output seamlessly to PRE. PRE gives many more output options including presets for YouTube, Vimeo and many others and with the ability to burn a DVD for viewing on a TV. You can also balance the audio between the original captured sound, multiple music tracks and narration.
There are some good holiday offers until early January. For example you can get the PSE12+PRE12 combo at Amazon for under $100.

  • Mobile Video Editing on the Macbook Pro 13'' - Some questions...

This is my first time visiting this forum, and I just wanted to get some thoughts on a mobile video editing setup I am looking to create... Here's what I'd like to do:
    - Use a Macbook Pro 13'' as my primary editing machine using Final Cut Studio for relatively small, but important projects.
    - I want to be able to edit as speedily as possible, but on a moderate budget. I know that keeping FCS on the MBP's main HD and editing video on an external drive is the best way to go. Also, because the fastest interface option on a MBP is Firewire 800, I am thinking of using a G-Raid Mini 500GB drive in Raid 0 for both maximum speed and portability. But I also want to be able to easily backup any video edited on the external drive. I am weary of the fact that MBP only has 1 Firewire port (and in this scenario, I need to connect a G-Raid drive, a DV camera, and yet another external drive for backing up the G-Raid Mini)
    Oh what a pain.
First, something I can't seem to find out is... if I want to load video to the G-Raid drive, I'm going to have to daisy chain my DV camera to it. If the DV camera is Firewire 400, will this lower the Firewire 800's port on the MBP down to 400 as well, thus kind of crippling the idea of speedy Raid 0?
And second, assuming I can hook up both the G-Raid and the DV camera to the Firewire 800 port without degrading speed... what would the best way be to go for backing up the G-Raid? I am thinking of using a USB 2.0 500GB drive, and using some sort of backup automation software. Any suggestions there?
What I'm looking for is mobility, functionality, secure backup for everything I shoot. I should have gone for a MBP 17'' with a Express slot, which would solve these potential issues... but again, I'm on a budget - and can't break the bank on this right now.
Any responses or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Zac

    Thanks for the response.
But a couple things... the reason I'm going with the 13'' is purely out of circumstance. I have a friend who just didn't want it anymore, and is selling it to me insanely cheap. Also, I already have extra monitors
I think what I am going to do is this:
G-RAID 500GB running in Raid-0 connected to the FW800 port. From there, when I need to capture, I will daisy chain the DVX-100 to the G-RAID... which will cut the FW down 400 from what I have read. After my video is captured, I will disconnect the DVX100, so I can get the FW800 G-RAID back up to proper speed during actual editing. When I want to do backups, I will connect a regular 500GB G-DRIVE and run a clone of the G-RAID everynight after I finish editing.
This solves a few problems, but it doesn't solve the issue of an external TV for native viewing while editing. Personally, I don't think I will always need this, but my DVX100 does do passthrough. (anytime I do it though, it will bump my FW speed back down to 400) So I can either do that, or I can look into S-Video USB options (which I haven't researched yet)
It won't be the most ideal setup in the world, but it seems like a lot of people with these newer Macbook Pro's are suffering the same kinds of issues. Hopefully I will manage.
If anyone has any further suggestions, please let me know. Anyone else with a Macbook Pro 13''? What kind of mobile setups have you come up with?
