Question PC or MAC w/ Logic

Can anyone help ? I am currently using a Pentium 4 - 3.4 Ghz- Gateway with the Digi 002. The PC is pretty stable but i have a problem with track count being only 16 Stereo. So I figured I could get more tracks with either a different software of going to an Hd system. I was thinking of going to Logic Pro but I need a MAC for this. Would it be foolish to buy a G5 and Logic for this or go straight to HD -full blown Pro Tools? Is anyone using Logic.
Also from looking at this MAC forum it seems like more people are having problems with the MAC and DIGI 002 then th PC forum.
Which computer does DIGI prefer MAC or PC ?
What will I need to make this transition smooth as possible if i go with the MAC/Logic ?

"clock speed is used as a gimmick. there is a lot more to fast performance on a computer."
The statment "our camp can't break 3GHz" was in direct refference to what Steve Jobs said when he broke the news about switching to the Intel based systems, the new 64 bit Intels have a wider bandwidth and faster clock speeds. Jobs made the promise of the 3GHz, now he can deliver.
"now i can't stand hearing PC users smugly declaring that macs are much much slower because they only go 2.7."
as far as this goes, I'm quite immpressed with the G4, never mind the G5.
they are both very capable cpu's...for that matter, my dual 1.42 mdd kicks the be-jesus out of my p4 2.8, but don't you think there is a reason the new macs are going to have 64 bit P4 (or similar) cpu's?... my guess is that the new Intels have more to offer mac users than the G5 can, more bandwidth and clock cycles. the G5 had simply come to a road block... how many 2.5/2.7 cores do you think they can cram on a single cpu, sorry but the reigning days of the G5 are coming to and end.
I can't believe that Apple would change teams mid-game if they thought that the "other team" had the same or less to offer.
not here to debate, just thought this was a forum for information.
...and not for nothing, but I did "switch" and said "our camp" not "your camp"... hey i love my mac, so can we all just play nice now?

Press the power button down to force a emergency hardware shutdown and hold the option/alt key down and reboot
If you see your OS X boot partition, then click it and the arrow, head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and reset it. Done.

If that doesn't it, then do a #2 PRAM reset and try the above again.

  • Burn project to edit on another mac with logic

can i burn my track i have made on my mac with logic express 7 and put it on another mac running the same and finish it off on that? also how do i burn my project as an audio cd?

Absolutely. Find where your Logic project is stored (mine is Music/Logic) and then grab the whole folder and burn it to CD. Copy it to another computer, and open the .lso file. Burning your audio files to CD can be done through iTunes, or select the burn option when you bounce. Best, Fred

  • New mac and logic pro 9

Last week my old G5 died and I,m looking at getting a new mac and logic pro 9.
My G5 had logic pro 7 and 8 installed on it. I was wondering do I need to install
those back on my new mac so I can upgrade to logic 9 or could I just install logic 9 on my new computer. I have the key that came with logic 7 and that's what I used to install logic 8 with. I really don't want to put those on my new computer. Also will logic 9 load my logic 8 songs.
    Thanks for your help,

    No.

    Yes.

Why not? You could install just the apps, they do not take much space and you know for sure you can always open your old projects.
Also will logic 9 load my logic 8 songs.
In principle, yes. But it can vary, depending on what you use(d) in those L8 projects (environment alterations, 3rd party plugins etc etc). If they won't load, use L8. I'ld advise you to install both L7 and L8, just in case. Just skip the samplecontent etc on both installs, do only the apps themselves.

  • Question on Sound forge pro mac with Logic.

    Hello,
I would liketo know if the plug-ins that come with Sound forge pro Mac could be used with Logic directly like using 3rd party plugins.SF has a whooe bunch of plugins but wil be able to use those plug ins ,like EQ ,Exciter, etc as induvidual plugins on a Logic project without having to export the wav file into Sound Forge?

The answer is No if it's anything like the PC version. The plugins are proprietary and only usable in Sound Forge, just as Logic's are only usable in Logic.
However, I don't know this ti be 100%, true.

  • New Yamaha n12 - Mac Pro / Logic 9 doesn't always recognize it! Help!

    Hi Guys,
Sorry to post another question about the Yamaha n12... hoping any Logic / n12 users can help me out here!
I'm finding that when I start up the Mac Pro, the n12 is not recognized in the "sounds" section in System Prefs.
Needless to say, it's not recognized in Logic, either...
It takes about 20 attempts turning the n12 on and off for it to eventually show up...
Does anyone have any tips on how to get this device to work in a stable way? It's seeming pretty erratic at the moment, and I'm already thinking I shouldn't part with my Mackie Onyx 1220 afterall.
Is there any way to get the n12 to use Core Audio directly (as the Onyx does... you just plug it in and OSX recognizes it straight away!)?
Or is the Yamaha M-Lan Connection Manager thing the only way to get the n12 to work?
If anyone can help with this or share their experiences, I'd be very grateful!
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Guys,
If you're using a Yamaha n12, there is a new version of the firmware (1.03), and the firwire firmware (1.0.7).
More importantly, Yamaha have released new drivers, called "Yamaha Steinberg FW drivers"...
Not only do these solve the problem of the n12 being recognized, they allow AMAZINGLY low latency. Projects which I had to run with a buffer of 128 on my Mackie Onyx will now run at a buffer of 32, with no glitches!
Very impressed with the n12 now I have the new drivers and firmware!
I definitely recommend that other n12 users update these if you haven't already!
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • Airport Question for a Mac Newbie

I just got a Macbook Pro and I also bought the Airport Extreme. When I click on the Airport Icon I can see about 15 or so different networks at any given time. I have a 2 part question. First how do I know which network/router is mine? How can I rename the network that is listed? I am very new to Mac's and wireless networking. I just want to make sure that I have protected my network properly. I set up a password for WAP is that all I need to do? One last thing, is there anyway I can make sure that I am protected properly? Thanks Much!!!
    MacBook Pro 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

A question eh? My counting must be off I see at least 4 question marks...
You know which router is yours because you set it up and named it. If you still can't figure it out you should pick a better name. When you click on your network and type in your password you should be able to connect.
To rename a network you will need to connect to it and run the AirPort Admin Utility which is location in the "Utilities" folder in your "Applications" folder.
If by WAP you mean WPA then you are off to a great start. When you picked the password I hope you didn't make it too easy to guess. Try putting numbers, letters and symbols in it and you should make it at least 16 charaters long to be sure that you are safe (I use 24 characters).
I would suggest looking at this tutorial from Apple - it might help answer some questions and should give you a better understanding:

  • How to use guest account on my mac and Logic

How do I manage, when setting up a guest account on my mac with some restrictions not to be able to use mail, internet etc other private things, to still let the guest be able to use Logic with my setup?
When trying to start Logic from a guest account I just made, it starts the logic setup manager again and AU validation tool and starts messing with some plugins I have already authorized - such as spectrasonics plugins, virtual guitar etc. Is there no way to just make let the guest user on this account be able to use Logic just as I already have had it setup with all my settings and plugins?

  • HELP - Dial Up Download Question from a Mac Mini Tiger OS X 10.4.6 Newbee??

There are hugh download files (133 Mb for 10.4.7 for example) that appeared when I ran Software update the first day I got my Mini. This would require 10 to 12 hours download on my Juno account. One solution I saw in these forums was to have a neighbor with High Speed connection download and burn a disc. My NEWBEE question is... Can you go to the Apple OS X download page and successfully download the 10.4.7 update (and others) using a Windows machine with Windows software?? Then have that Windows PC burn a disc that can transfer the update to my Mini?? I'm breaking new ground in my neighborhood and appear to be the only one with a Mac. These forums are great - Thanks Addie
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   first time user

Thanks to you and Sig for the response. We have NO APPLE STORE/OUTLET within a four hour drive, therefore your input that a PC can burn the disc is the best alternative I have. BUT what do you mean by a "hybrid" data CD? I'm a NEWBEE, so could you give me a little more specifics, i.e., what package/brand & model should I buy? I was thinking any CD-ROM would work! Thanks & sorry for my lack of experience, Addie

  • Question about the Mac Pro's Video Abilities

Hi, I'm strongly considering buying a new Mac. I've looked at the iMacs, but I am more used to Tower PCs. The Mac Pro's design and expandability is what I am used to. My question I have is concerning the graphics ability of the Mac Pro. Currently, I have a HP vs17e LCD monitor and an old Envision EN910 CRT monitor. I am very pleased with both of these monitors. Recently, I hooked up the HP monitor to this old 400MHz G3 8MB Video iMac, and it looked really good except the text sometimes looked a little blurry. I figure that the 8MB video might have had something to do with that. I do not care that much about widescreen displays or high performance $700 displays. I like to use simple, old style monitors. Would I be able to use either one of these screens on the Mac Pro with a GeForce 7300 card? Also, my next question is concerning the use of a TV as a secondary display. Our TV is a big Toshiba that has the old style CRT format. It accepts the yellow video connector and another connector that I think is called the S-Video (black connector). Can I buy adapters that will allow me to use the TV as a second display?

I would venture to say that if the monitor has a digital input capability, then the cable that would be used, is not like the output from the Mac. But, if you want to use the digital to analog adapter that comes with the Mac Pro, or is a purchased item for some of the lower priced Macs, the monitor will work as an analog VGA monitor. The gal that cuts my hair was telling me the horror story abount how they had to spend $200 to connect their Apple Cinema Display to their PC. I am pretty sure you won't have to spend that kind of money. So, if your monitor will accept an analog input, it should work. Many LCD monitors were only analog when they first came out years ago. I took a short look at yours. It appears to only have an analog input. My Mac Pro manual says to use the adapter if you want to hook up an analog VGA monitor. You can verify this at an Apple store before you purchase. I don't see any issues, but it is always best to "get it from the horses mouth".

  • Video transfer question for older mac 10.5.8

I am trying to figure out how to transfer video from my JVC GR-D770U video camera to my PowerPC G5 running 10.5.8. I have the proper firewire cable but have been unable to find answer for my question on the internet that is specific to my situation.

... I dont have iMovie and cant find a version that works with my older OS.
The camera videos are on a Digital Video Cassette tape, not a card.
Use iMovie with your Firewire (IEEE 1394) connected mini DV camcorder.
iMovie 6 HD is part of iLife '06, works great with older miniDV camcorders,
and is compatible with your Mac OS X 10.5.8.  You will need to install
iMovie '06 before you can use the downloadable latest update from the link.
If you cannot find it locally, this old version is available on-line, including Amazon.com.

  • Some dumb questions from a MAC Virgin

Firstly let me thank you for help you are going to give me.
I have thought for many years about switching to a MAC from my PC.
At the moment I a wireless network comprising my desktop (which is the one I would like to replace with a MAC system) and downstairs a Sony Vaio laptop. I use a Netgear Router and for the upstairs computer a usb wireless dongle to connect to my network.
    First question.
    1. If I buy a mac desktop and set it up upstairs how do I connect it to my wireless network? Is it possible? Is it easy? Will it just find it as my PC does and allow me to gain access via my WEP key?
    Second Question.
I maintain daily two websites. I know the FTP access won't be an issue as far as I can see but what software is available for web design and maintenance - doesn't need to be fancy I can code HTML by hand.
    Third Question.
My printer is connected to my desktop upstairs assuming I can access and maintain a wireless connection will my printer work with the laptop?

    1. Yes, yes and yes.
    2. Lots can be found at versiontracker.com and macupdate.com
    3. If there are Mac drivers for your printer, yes it will work. To setup, see this page:

  • Flashing ? Question mark when mac turned on

    hi,
i just switched my mac on to find a flashing question mark and no access to my system....
I have followed some of the other posts on this topic and completed the suggested remedies....but they have not worked...
thing is i ran verify disc and repair disc and both reported to be ok...drive is mounted...i use time machine as my back up so should i just restore the system from the most recent time machine back up? will my system be restored exactly the same or as recent as last back up??
    Cheers,
    b.

I've been testing out TM at home and work using myself, some of my co-workers, and a few lab machines as guinea pigs. Overall I've been impressed with it but I've seen some issues that give me pause and one of them is what I'm coming to think of as a 'cascade of errors' where a an issue develops and slowly gets worse before we realize it - and all the time TimeMachine is backing them up. So when we use TM to recover the drive we wind up recovering all those errors. Since I don't know exactly what TM does in regard to backing up System and Library files and caches, I don't know if my assumptions are right or not...but it leaves me unprepared to entirely trust TM for the 'big one'.
So, I'm continuing to use TM - and it has saved me. A sudden drive failure occurred less than 30 minutes after my last TM backup and after restoring the next day I was 100% back up and running having lost just a few edits of a picture I'd been working on. But I'm also doing two clone backups - one that is one system update behind and another that I update more frequently.
Can't say why your TM backup didn't work 100% and I don't know if an Archive and Install will fix it. I will say though that Adobe products will probably have to be reinstalled and Office might need to be uninstalled and then reinstalled. Both are rather touchy and I generally do a reinstall of both after an Archive & install. While it isn't a fix-all, I'd think permission repairs would also be in order. Also - did you use Migration Assistant to restore the drive or did you use the TM interface? If the latter, that might be the problem. Lots of programs, Adobe and Office included, place and need files that are in the global Library.

  • Blinking question mark when Mac Book turns on

When my daughter turns on her Mac Book the screen shows a blinking picture of a folder with a question mark. What does this mean and how can I fix it? My local Genius Bar doesn't have an opening until next week. Thank you.

It means that critical system files are corrupted or missing - no valid operating system was found. Typically this means you must reinstall OS X. It could in rare cases simply be due to directory corruption that may be repaired. So first you might do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    In most cases reinstalling OS X will be necessary. You may be able to do the following;
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
