Question Photoshop CS6

Imagine working with a photo of a purse that has a handle. The handle is upright letting you see background space above and below the strap. I need to cut the purse, strap included, from the rest of the picture. Then I have to save it on its own. I am not moving the cut out purse to a new picture to place it on. How do I do this? Is there something that has to be done to the picture first, (bachground, layer, etc.) before even selecting the right PCS6 tool? What is the best tool to use?

Also, the [Refine Edge] function can be used to nicely after making a selection to prep the edges of an object, and with the proper option selected it will even automatically put it on a new layer with a mask for you.

First issue: Every time I initialized Type Tool (starting a couple of days ago) PS would crash. Thought maybe file was too large, odd because I've worked on very large files before but, reduced image size. Bring up Type Tool ... crash. Get on Chat Support and explain my issue (maybe there's something I'm missing here). Please install Adobe App Advisor.exe ... This is a Mac I say. OOOOPS, please install .dmg. Install, update Adobe AIR. Give me control of your computer while you watch and I'll fix the issue. Watch for a few minutes, this person doesn't know Mac OS I see. Once he or she (not sure, doesn't matter) finds what they're looking for, makes copies of .log files. These offer no suggestion to the problem. Solution, make new folder to install Adobe software (?!) and change Permissions on every Adobe folder on my computer. Hmmm, this doesn't help either. Okay, now I must log out and log in as Root user. Okay, fiddle around in my machine as Root for a bit. More folder fiddling, more permission changing, turn off Firewall. Nope, no good either. Silence for about 7 minutes, no response from Tech Support, I'm about to log out of chat.
Feeling very uncomfortable as all security disabled and am in Root ...... Sorry, tech glitch couldn't reply to you. Let me look at one more thing.
Now told, sorry nothing I can do. I'll set you up for a phone call tomorrow, bye. End Chat abruptly. (2 1/2 hours later)
Go back to start Photoshop, there is work I can do that doesn't need Type Tool will at least try to recoup some of the time lost until I get a call tomorrow from Tech.
Next Problem ...... NONE OF MY ADOBE SOFTWARE WORKS AT ALL NOW! NOTHING WILL EVEN START UP!! Says I must re-install Application Manager. Do this 3 times!

I've been using Photoshop and Illustrator since the 90's .. Never have I had issues like this with either the software or support. I'm very disappointed.

Well that does change the story. If you purchased a PC version of CS6, the license is PC only. It can only be installed on a second PC for your own use.
If you buy a Mac, you would either buy another $350 copy of Photoshop Mac, or agree to a swap, that is exchange the PC license for a Mac license, giving up all rights to the PC license.
If you have the disposable income for it, get a $350 Photoshop Extended Mac license as well.

Photoshop CS6 Extended Update Questions

I have Photoshop CS6 Extended as part of the Master Suite (stand alone) on a 64bit Windows PC. it is currently running PS version 13.0
I can't connect the PC to the internet at this time but would like to download the update(s) on my laptop and then install in the PC.
My Questions are:
1) are there any known problems with offline upgrades to Photoshop doing it this way? Any precautions I should take?
2) what version CS6 Extended should I be Updating to (as I'm on a stand alone version and not Creative Cloud)?

Considering Purchase of Wacom Cintiq 27 HD Touch - Questions about Touch Functionality in Lightroom 5 & Photoshop CS6

I am considering purchase of a Wacom Cintiq 27 HD Touch monitor. I have a few questions relative to two Adobe programs and their use of "touch" functionality - Lightroom 5.7 and Photoshop CS6 running on Windows 7.
1. Have the problems related to touch functionality in Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5 been resolved that you see on this and Wacom's forums from a year ago?
2. If so, is there enough value gained via touch functionality in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS6 to warrant the $500 difference in price between the Cintiq 27 HD vs HD Touch? (I realize that this is a subjective question based on the abundance of one's cash.)
3. I plan to stay with CS6 as long as humanly possible to avoid a monthly software subscription, BUT I do wonder if purchasing the HD Touch now may provide additional touch functionality in future versions of these software products that are not currently available. (So this is a pie in the sky sort of question.)

Photoshop Touch support is added in CC 2014.2.2. However Wacom tablets like the Intuos Pro with touch can be use with prior versions of Photoshop and the Wacom Tablets Configurator can customized the tablets touch features to be used with Photoshop. I do not use LR but I'm sure the same would be true for it. You can configure setting for many applications. The device driver knows which application its interfacing with and uses the setting set for each..
I disable most of touch when using Photoshop. The Main reason I have a tablet is Photoshop Brush type tools. Like eraser, clone stamp, etc nothing is better then a pen when it come to creating layer mask. For most programs I still use a mouse and I use the Keyboard, Mouse and Pen with Photoshop....
I never wanted a Cintig I like not having my hand between my eyes and work. I not an artist though.

Photoshop CS6 license question

I have a Photoshop CS6 installed on a desktop PC and sent the PC for repair. The tech re-installed the OS so I never had the chance to de-activate the s/w. I know I am entitled to 2 licenses (one desktop and one laptop). I re-installed the PS on the repaired PC and seems to work fine. How do I know if I have burned 2 licenses already or just one, without trying to install to a laptop to test it?

I'm watching a lynda.com tutorial demonstrating 3D type in Photoshop CS6. I don't see 3D among the menu options at the top of my screen as is shown in the tutorial. What am I missing?

I am guessing that you are missing Cs6 "Extended" - you need Extended for 3d work.

Photoshop CS6 Layer via Copy Question

Hi,
I've noticed that when a selection is Layer via Copyed in Photoshop CS6, it appears brighter and slightly more saturated in color than the original selection it came from. Currently I manually make lighting and color adjustments to match it back to the original, but is there a way to prevent this altogether? There are no masks or adjustment layers or any other tools being used when this happens -- just a simple Layer via Copy.
I'm not sure if there is a setting that will help cut out that time consuming manual step of retouching to match the original selection, but any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

There shouldn't be any difference if it's just layer via copy in the same document.
What operating system are you using?
Is photoshop cs6 up to date?

Photoshop CS6: Question about Resolution when Post-Cropping Film Scans

Hopefully, somebody with more understanding than I on this topic, can help me with this.
I am about to get a film scanner I have on order, to scan in 35mm negatives. I've had one before but I had problems with the model and had to return it.
When scanning film frames, I like the idea of setting the scan area marquee, at the scanning stage, so that it scans slightly beyond the film frame edges, so that I can carefully crop to the edge of the film frame later, in Photoshop CS6, rather than setting it, at the scanning stage, and then later, when examining the film frame in CS6, maybe discovering that I have not scanned to the edge of the film frame quite enough, as I can easily zoom right into the image when in CS6, to carefully examine where the film frame edges are.
My concern about doing it like this, though, is that I may be reducing the resolution of the image. For example, say I scan a film frame in at 3600ppi, and later crop the image slightly in CS6 in order to precisely trim off any slight amount of black around the film frame edges. By cropping the film frame like this in CS6, am I reducing the image resolution of the film frame to lower than 3600ppi? As I best understand it, I do not think post-cropping like this results in any reduction in image resolution, but am I correct in thinking this?

The scanner is a Reflecta ProScan 7200. As I said to station_two, I am in London. I understand the brand is known as 'Pacific Image' over in the US.
The scanning software I will be using it with will be 'SilverFast Ai Studio 8'.

Photoshop CS6 Install Question

Why does the Adobe Photoshop CS6 have the two install options clicked by default? These are the Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit) and the Adobe Photoshop CS6. I have Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. Am I missing some features if I only install the former? Is the latter for 32-bit OS? If so, why are they both clicked by default anyway?

There are features like TWAIN fpor scanning or specific printer drivers that pnly work in 32bit. Likewise, some people use legacy third-party plug-ins that only work in 32bit. If you don't fall into any of those categories, then feel free to only install 64bit PS.

Photoshop CS6 - question about 'Classroom In A Book' Lesson 4

I am teaching myself Photoshop CS6 using Adobe's "Classroom in a Book." In Lesson 4, I am supposed to be able to open the Satin Layer Style from within the Drop Shadow Style Layer. It does not work!!! When I click the Satin check box, nothing happens.
Is the book wrong or am I doing something wrong?

I will start with Item 10.
10. ”Select the Flower layer and choose Layer>Layer style>Drop Shadow. Then change the following settings in the Structure area:
     Opacity: 60%
     Distance: 13px
     Spread: 9%
Make sure Use Global Light is selected and the Blend Mode is Multiply. Do not click OK.”

11. "With the Layer Style dialogue box still open, select Satin on the left. Then make sure Invert is selected, and apply the following settings:
     Color (next to Blend Mode): Fuchsia (choose a color that compliments the flower color.

Photoshop CS6 / Video Cards Question

I am purchasing a new computer and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on whether nVidia or AMD would be better for use with Photoshop CS6. In my previous computers, I've only ever had an integrated video card and they worked okay enough with Photoshop. But now I have the opportunity to purchase a computer with an nVidia/2 Gig Vram or an AMD Radeon/1 gig VRAM video card.
This is very generalized since I know so much depends on the cpu speed, ram, whether or not you have multiple hard drives, etcetera.
I've got a clear idea of what I want for all the other components of the computer, but I have no working knowledge of video cards.
I use Photoshop for photo editing and I also want to eventually use it for High Definition Photography editing.
FYI, I don't do any gaming.

I usually recommend ATI over nVidia, just because over the past few years as an OpenGL software developer myself I've seen better driver quality from AMD (ATI), but I don't know that past experience is an indication of current performance... Right now today ATI driver quality has slipped a little, while nVidia's has gotten better.
That said, my most recent purchase was a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 7850 card. A 7750, at about half the price, probably would have done fine, but I figure the 2 GB onboard RAM makes the 7850 a bit more future-proof.
Something important to think about when choosing a video card is this: Watch how much electrical power they need. Video cards, because they have very fast processors, tend to require a lot of wattage and make a lot of heat, and many computers simply don't have the capacity to provide an extra hundred watts of power to a video card, nor exhaust the heat very well, so adding a power-hungry card could destabilize your system or cause heat problems. Something like the Radeon 7750 has a very low power draw. NVidia has some low power models as well, no doubt, but I'm not as familiar with the models.

Photoshop CS6 Subscription Activation Question

Hi,
I was wondering if it is standard behaviour for my PS CS6 subscription to require me to log in to Activate the licence EVERY time I use it? I thought that one it was activated, PS only checks the Activation every 30 days. Once I log in the activation works fine, however if for any reason my internet connection was not available, it would seem that I would not be able to use my copy of PS.
I realise that that would happen even if the check was every 30 days, but that would only be a possible issue once a month, not every day!

I have tried disabling Firewall & anti-virus but to no effect.
