[Question] RAM types Corsairs vs Kingston

Hi,
I plan to buy a dual channel set for my MacBook (late 2007 model);
2.16 GHz
667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
CORSAIR 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model VS2GSDS667D2:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145172
or
Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Memory for Apple Notebook Model KTA-MB667K2/2GR:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134558
I don't which one to choose.
Suggest.

No, you got confused in this:
SDRAM (Synchronous dynamic random access memory) is a description of the interface to the memory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SDRAM
SO-DIMM (or SODIMM) (Small outline dual in-line memory module) is a description for the form factor of a RAM module http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SO-DIMM
SDRAM and its successor (DDR1-3 -RAM) can come in the form factor of a SO-DIMM or in the form factor of a DIMM module.

  • Netbook RAM type?

I check the bestbuy website and interested in two netbooks, Gateway, model LT2802U, and Toshiba, model NB505-N500BL. My question, RAM type is DDR2 or DDR3? Website says DDR3, but I look for a 2 gb RAM to upgrade, the compatible is DDR2 (under "Find memory")? In addition, how long does the battery of Gateway model LT2802U last? Thanks

  • Ram Type for a dv4t-1200

Hi I would like to find out what type of Ram that I need for my HP DV4T-1200 Laptop can some one tell me where to find it Thank You in advance

    Hi Mika
Look at the [iMac (Mid 2007) Installing or replacing memory|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306204] article, you can use RAM module sizes of 1 or 2 GB in each slot.
Then look at [The Dealram Site|http://dealnews.com/memory/prices/systems/Apple-i-Mac-Intel-PC2-5300-DDR2- SO-DIMMS/41494/2GBx2.html] were you can choose anything from a single 1 or 2GB module to the 2 or 4GB kits from different suppliers and sellers.
Crucial, OWC, Samsung, Corsair, Mushkin and Kingston modules have all been approved by many users here in the forum. Stick with the suppliers that sell name brands and offer a lifetime warranty!

  • WHERE CAN I BUY A 5.2GB DVD-RAM TYPE 1 CARTRIDGE

I have spent hours looking on the net. Do they make them anymore?
    My DVD-RAM drive is a Matshita PD-2 LF-D110. Revision A110.
Can I use a 2.6GB Type 1 Cartridge in this drive?
If I upgrade to Tiger will I be able to use my DVD-RAM drive?
Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   DVD RAM Matshita PD-2 D110

I know this does not directly answer you question, but you may want to consider getting a new DVD-/+R burner; they are less than $40 online (DVR-110D, ND-3550A, try newegg.com as one resource).
It may be less frustrating than trying to use your old DVD-RAM drive.
If you really want to use DVD-RAM, the DVR-110D firmware can be altered to support DVD-RAM (the non-US versions are marketed as such), or the LG GSA-4163B is also a DVD-RAM capable drive out-of -the-box.
In any OS prior to Tiger, you will need to download & run PatchBurn for iApp/Finder burn support.

  • W510 ram - type and correct placement

I'm planning to add some ram to my w510. Over another forum I've read that 4 dimms can cause trouble, ie kingstons ram didn't work for one user (with ll 4 slots filled). My w510 had 2 Elpida 2GB 8500 dimms installed so I guess I am looking for ddr3 1066 mhz cl7 memory, right?
Another thing is how does actually dual channel work with 4 slots? Do I have to add 2 dimms of the same type so all 4 match? or perhaps is 2+2 and only each to have to match?
It is also strange where to put each dimms. It would seem that two installed dimms should work together (there are in slots under the keyboard) but CPU-Z shows ram in slots #1 and #3 and that they are NOT running dual channel. Is something wrong or it is just software error?
I would be glad if someone could shed some light on this. The new ram will cost around $100 total and I only want to pay once =)
    T540 i7 4700MQ, GT 730M, 8GB RAM, Win7

I'm unable to add my 4GB DIMM module.....
I've tried every possible combination to no avail. The 4GB DIMM does not provide 4GB of added memory. I've read the Lenovo's guide and this doesn't give me more, it actually cuts my total memory down to 2GB.
    The setup is:
    2x Ramaxel 2GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600S
    1x Samsung 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600S
I'm no DIMM expert, but the 2GB's modules are single channel (or so speccy says). I have no idea what the 4GB module is... The 4GB module is visable when I'm using a management program, but it's not providing the added memory. nor does it show up in my BIOS. The funny thing is that it worked for a short period in this configuration:
2x2GB modules underneath the keyboard and 1x4GB module in the DIMM slot-0 under the W510
The irony here is that the 4GB DIMM module is the only one actually stamped by Lenovo, and it doesn't friggin' work.
I would appreciate some input here please. I'm stomped :/
    --- Edit ---
I've tested the 4GB DIMM on another laptop and it worked without any problem whatsoever. I'm contemplating returning my laptop to the support center for service...
    --- Edit ---
I've placed the 2GB modules in their respecitve Slot-0 (beneath the keyboard and under the laptop), and this got the DIMM's to work in dual channel as normal. However, placing the 4GB module in any of the vacant slots (Slot-1 or Slot-3) somehow breaks the memory setup and reduces my working amount to 2GB total. I'm using speccy from Piriform (yeah, yeah.. it's a free ad) and it confirms the other slots is being filled with the proper memory module, but the BIOS or the OS does not activate and use them. Am I forced to use memory modules in pairs? Still? I know this was an issue 10+ years ago with the SIMM's...
    Cheers

  • K8N Neo-F + AMD 64 3000+ Venice -- Ram types?

    Hello!
Quick question I hope isn't too tricky to answer. I have ordered an MSI K8N Neo-F motherboard, with a retail boxed AMD 64 3000+ cpu (Venice core, Rev. E) and ordered a pair of Corsair PC3200 512MB sticks of ram, its the VS1GBKIT400 kit. Unfortunately the ram did not get here and its friday so I'm going crazy! I have an older AMD XP 2000+ system with an MSI K3 Ultra-ARU setup with a pair of generic 512MB DDR333 ram sticks in it, they're pc2700.
I've read through the manual for the K8N and it sounds like this should run fine with my DDR333 sticks but I just wanted to post and see what others thought. Looks like I can run either of them or both of them so hopefully that will work, would hate to wait till monday/tuesday to have to play with the new system!
    Thanks!

Cpu temp is around 40-50 celcius.
I have tried all the three mem slots with every combination including only one mem chip.
Another problem is that i never have got dual channel listed in cpu-z or memtest.
Yes the psu might be the case. I have tried a Dell crap psu a Chieftec 15a on 12v and a cheftec 18a on 12v. But i think it is very strange that i get completly the same result with all three different psu and two different rams.
And no i have never oc this system, except raising the volt on mem and cpu, but i only used the yellow number to be safe.

  • 2 questions about types

First question is how can I override the default constructor (or add an exception to it). I have an object like this
create or replace type date_object as object
         (quarter     number,
         year          number(4),
         member procedure set_date(d in date_object),
         member procedure set_date(d in date),
member procedure set_date(v_qtr in number, v_year in number),
constructor function date_object(d in date_object) return self as result,
constructor function date_object(d in date) return self as result,
--overriding constructor function date_object(v_qtr number, v_year number) return self as result,
         member function to_string return varchar2,
         member function get_quarter return number,
         member function get_year return number,
         member function get_quarter_as_string return varchar2);
/I want to replace date_object(v_qtr number, v_year number) with a new constructor that will call an exception if the quarter number is not 1,2,3,4. Oracle will not let me declare or overide function constructor function date_object(v_qtr number, v_year number) return self as result
Second question is, can I have an ADT as a primary key. This is what I am required to do, but it is not working for me:
    create table financial_data
         (bank_code     number(7)     references banks(bank_code),
         qdate          date_object,
         total_assets     number,
         current_liabilities     number,
         long_term_liabilities     number,
         operating_income     number,
         investment_income     number,
         expenses     number);
         constraint     fd_pk          primary key (bank_code, qdate));

It would be much more simple having just a date (year and quarter can be easily extracted from)

  • FB DIMM Question (RAM)

I currently have a 2007 Mac Pro with 2 GB of memory and I am looking to upgrade. I was interested in getting an 8GB stick when I saw an article about the FB DIMM setup which suggest no more or less than 4 modules to run at optimal speed.
My question is, does this me 4 sticks of RAM, total, at any size. Could I have a configuration of two 1 GB, and two 4 GB for a total of 4 modules and 10 GB ram?
    http://www.maconintel.com/news.php?article=209

In your model RAM must be installed minimally in matched pairs, optimally in matched quads. That means two or four modules each of which are the same. You cannot put an 8 GB module in your model. 4 GBs is the largest module compatible, I believe, although you can certainly try two 8 GB modules. Who knows, they may work. Or not.

  • General Macbook Questions (RAM upgrade, refurbished...etc)

I'm strongly considering getting a black macbook (aka I really want one, but am in the process of saving up some money), but I had a few questions that I can't seem to find the answers to.
    1. Refurbished macbooks. If I were to buy a refurbished macbook, is the system "reset" (sorry, cant think of a more appropriate word) or anything? How do I explain this better...although the macbook has been used, when I open it up for the first time, will I get the set-up screen and such? Or will it be already-functioning? Essentially, am I getting a "new" macbook with used parts, or a used macbook?
    2. If I buy the refurbished black macbook on the Apple Canada website, will I be able to upgrade the 1GB of RAM to 2GB? If so, can Apple install it for me? Can I have it done at an Apple store location? And how much would that cost?
    3. Are there refurbished macbooks on sale at Apple locations (i.e. if anyone's from toronto, at the Eaton Centre or Yorkdale)? If so, are they the same as the ones on the Apple website, or are they different?
    4. How noticable is the difference between 1GB and 2GB RAM? Because I would want my macbook to be fast and function properly, but - considering my current desktop is 256MB of RAM - I'm not sure if I need it. I'll mostly be using internet/msn/microsoft office/occasionally photoshop.
Sorry for the long post, and thanks for any help in advance!

You're getting a "new" MacBook with warranty that's been reset/refurbished under close scrutiny.
"If I buy the refurbished black macbook on the Apple Canada website, will I be able to upgrade the 1GB of RAM to 2GB? If so, can Apple install it for me? Can I have it done at an Apple store location? And how much would that cost?"
This is something that you can do yourself: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721 and probably save money.
"Are there refurbished macbooks on sale at Apple locations (i.e. if anyone's from toronto, at the Eaton Centre or Yorkdale)? If so, are they the same as the ones on the Apple website, or are they different?"
As far as I know, Apple only has refurbished items available online.

You will notice a considerable change from 256MB and you probably will be fine with 1GB. If your needs change or if you feel that you need more RAM, increase it to 2GB at that time.
I have a refurbised WhiteBook that I increased from 512MB Ram and a 60GB HD to 2GB RAM and a 160GB HD. I love it!

  • Upgrade questions - Ram and HD

Considering adding some ram and a new HD to my MacBook.
    It's a late 2008 Unibody, 2.4 GHz.
I currently have 4GB of Ram and a 250GB HD, which I believe spins at 5400 rpm (how do I check that?).
My understanding is that this machine can take 6GB of ram. I'm assuming I can just buy one 4GB stick and replace the 2GB stick with it, correct? If so, where should I buy it from and what should I be looking for? Also, what performance increase can I expect - specifically in Photoshop CS5 and LR3?
Will getting a faster spinning drive increase performance as well (for PS and LR)? If so, what should I be looking for there?
    Thanks for any/all help.

To find out about your hard drive open System Profiler to find the make and model of the drive then go to the manufacturer's site to find specifications for the particular model.
Adding more RAM will not make the computer perform faster. It simply allows you to run more applications concurrently or provides more RAM to running applications. If you are now running out of RAM then adding more will help. If you aren't running out of RAM, then adding more simply lets you run more applications concurrently. To add more RAM to reach the 6 GB limit you will need one 4 GB module and one 2 GB module. Look in the user manual for information on the specific type of RAM you need. Most likely PC-5300 667 MHz SDRAM 200-pin, but check your manual. Sources of RAM I recommend are Data Mem and OWC.
Getting a faster and/or larger hard drive will improve the performance of data access and may improve boot time. An excellent replacement would be a Seagate X500 which is a 7200 RPM Hybrid drive having 500 GBs of storage plus 4 GBs of SSD memory to improve the drive's performance. It's not as fast as a normal SSD, but it's faster than a standard drive. Cost is around $160.00 on the street. OWC sells a nice bundle of drive, enclosure, tools, and software. You can replace the existing drive then put the old drive in the enclosure so you can boot the computer then partition and format the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive.
Source means the external startup drive.

  • Just got some RAM, guy says its Kingston- I'm not sure...

Its is because on the chips on the RAM stick its says the words infineon , no mention of Kingston 'cept a sticker!
please advise I have 3 days to get it back to the guy if I'm not happy.
    thanks
    becca

Oh, I thought you bought it used from a guy on eBay or something. If you bought it new from a vendor, they should give a warranty longer than 3 days.
FYI - I did a Google search on "Kingston Infineon." Those two companies appear to be partners.
