Question re: Apple Care

I have inherited a G5 iMac from a recently deceased relative. I'm not that interested in keeping it, but before I sell it, I'm going to have to resolve an issue with the OCD drive, which is having a hard time recognizing and reading disks (including the troubleshooting disks that came with the iMac).
I'd like Apple to take care of this, and that's where my question arises: the computer was not purchased with Apple Care, but my relative (taking my advice, I believe) bought Apple Care about six months after originally buying the iMac.
Unfortunately, she wasn't in the best of health at the time, and was not entirely together mentally: for that reason, she did not register the Apple Care plan before she died -- so I have also inherited the unopened Apple Care box.
I've just now started to turn my attention to her iMac and discovered the problem with the drive. My question is, since she bought the Apple Care plan within a year of buying the iMac, is her computer still covered even though she didn't register her computer in Apple Care?
One last thing: while I'm sure a lot of you have valuable advice to offer about the drive, please be sure to answer the Apple Care question first when you respond. The iMac is not a top priority for me, and unless there's an obvious quick fix I would prefer to ship it off to Apple if possible.
Thanks!

Hi George,
Sorry about that, but if it's unopened, unregistered, this AppleCare does not guarantee any Mac yet.
It is just like one of those you can find on eBay or in some stores.
When you open the box and register, using the number you find inside, of course it has to be for a Mac that is still within its first year of warranty.
Your only (very slight) chance, is to find an agent who would believe and understand (with the help of original papers), and who'd have the power to trick the registration dates.
(mentioning this because myself I have a 5 week AppleCare extension, because my Mac was kept at repair for 7 weeks, meaning there ARE such very nice, competent and commonsensed agents at Apple)
the OCD drive:
Have you tried "the obvious": cleaning it using one of these lens-cleaners CDs?
Sometimes it doesn't take more that some dust... hopefully?
Good luck!
Axl

  • Re: Question on Apple Care

Could somone answer the question concerning Apple & Apple Care if you live in Florida? There is an odd Florida state law that prohibits the purchase or use of Apple Care if Florida is your legal residence. How does Apple work around that one or do they. Or are Florida residence (me soon) just have to live with the original warrenty?
I can't even get an answer from Apple Care as to if my current contract would still be good once I move. The folks that answer the phone tell you they can't answer anything once you mention Florida. So they won't even tell me if my Apple Care falls into neverland once my legal address changes.

If you live in Missouri now and buy a Apple Computer and register it, then buy an AppleCare Protection Plan and enroll it using your Missouri address, you will have no trouble later on if you need to get your computer repaired through AppleCare in Florida. If you buy the APP in another state and enroll it, moving to Florida does not cancel it. It's only the sale of the plans themselves that is prohibited, not the service they provide. You can safely change your address and your APP will continue to provide you service.

  • Question on apple care warrentee

i purchased the apple care with the 1st gen iPhone and I'm going to buy the 3g soon. Will my warrentee carry over? I really hope so. Does anyone know? If not, if I was to give my phone to someone, will it stay on that phone?

I would think it would be like any other warranty, and be specific to the iPhone is was purchased for, and thus carry over when you gave/sold your old iPhone.

  • Question on Apple Care

Hello. My parents are considering buying an iBook and an iPod. I live in Tucson, so I'm able to take my powerbook to the local Apple store whenever I need service. My parents, however, live in New Mexico, where there are currently no Apple store locations. They do live near a Best Buy and Compusa. What would be the best warranty plan for my parents? Is Apple Care really worth it if they don't live near an Apple Store?
    Thanks

A year and a half ago, my original pink iPod mini developed a problem about a month after the original 1 year warranty expired. The genius at the Apple store told me the repair for the problem would cost $249- basically telling me I'd have to purchase a new mini. The $59 Applecare I purchased for my replacement mini is, to me, worth the cost.
Just purchased it for my 1 yr old G4 iBook, as well, as my G3 iBook's logic board malfunctioned not too long after 1 year of age. (Since it affected a waking from sleep issue and not a video logic board problem, it was not covered under the extended logic board thing). Have already had to use it to replace a defective Combo drive. Again, worth the cost.

  • Question about apple care

i just can't find the Web Registration Instructions card or booklet in the apple care box. so how can i get the AppleCare registration number???

I would suggest that you contact the place that sold you AppleCare and tell them that you have an incomplete box. If the box was not shrink-wrapped in plastic when it arrived, it was probably opened by someone else and the card with the plan registration code removed.
If you purchased AppleCare directly from the Apple Store, call the Apple Store and explain the situation to them. If you purchased AppleCare at the same time that you purchased a new Mac, your AppleCare plan may have been enrolled automatically so a code would not be necessary. The Apple Store should be able to tell you, and if you should have received a card with a registration code, they should be able to help resolve the situation.

  • Apple support answer firmware questions without Apple care?

I have a 5G that is under a year old.
From what I understand, they will only answer one 'incident' for free within 90 days.
What if their crappy firmware is causing problems with your pod? Will they try to help you over the phone, or will they run the standard 'it's not our problem unless you'd like to purchase an apple warranty' bull#$@ on you?
I mean, this is ridiculous. What good is a video ipod if I cannot use the video part of it?

  • Apple Care has determined my download of Lion to be corrupt or broken

FYI to everyone who read my previous questions.
Apple Care has determined that the download of Lion I received is corrupt or broken.
No offense to the nice guy at Apple who helped me, but, DUH.
Apple is sending me Snow Leopard discs free of charge since my less than one year old iMac somehow didn't come with any.
With any luck, by weeks' end, I will have a working computer with a brain.
So, IF you are continuing to have Lion problems I strongly encourage you to contact Apple Care and check it out.
I think there is a massive problem with every version of Lion and Apple needs to know so it can be fixed.
Everything new has bugs. I just have higher expectations from Apple since, obviously, it works better than any PC.
I don't think Lion should have gotten out of the cage before some more trouble shooting and trials.
So, I will happily go back to Snow Leopard when my discs arrive and my computing life will return to happy.
Lesson learned, not everything shiny and new is needed or better.

Question: Does Apple-Care cover dead batteries if u get the extand plan for 3yrs and ur battery dies. they sent u new one.. or do u have buy one..? also how many cycles does a MBP have? Thanks!

It does not unless failure occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship. The statement is under (b) limitations.

  • Warranty / Apple Care question

Does anyone know whether installing my own upgraded hard drive would void my Apple Care extended warranty?

I apologize for posting in the wrong forum but thanks for answering my question anyway.
Yes, the question is about a Powerbook G4 Laptop that I'm asking about. And the warranty expires on Feb 2, 2008. Unfortunately I've already replaced the internal hard drive so I guess that's moot anyway.
    Oh well...

  • MacBook Pro Mid - 2010 has question mark folder and block sign at start up could I get apple care and apple will fix it

I need information ASAP on what I should do with my MacBook Pro , am I able to just give apple the money for the apple care cost and they'll fix problem

It's too late, at this point, to get AppleCare, unless you purchased the machine on or after February of 2011 - and then you'd only have a few months, at best, of extended warranty.
The best thing that you can do is to either diagnose the symptoms and fix the machine yourself or take it into an Apple Store or AASP and have them diagnose and fix the problem(s).
If your profile is correct and you're running 10.5.8 then you should get disc one that came with your machine and boot from it and run Disk Utility's Verify and Repair commands on your hard drive. If it fails, you'll know that the problem is most likely with the hard drive.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Question re; buying Apple Care...

Hello - I have had my MacBookPro almost a year, and will need to decide if I'm going to purchase the Apple Care protection. I know I'm probably 'asking for it' here, when I ask, 'do I really need it'? But, am only asking because it is going to be a bit of a financial challenge at the moment...
My computer has worked great so far (am knocking wood), but realize that at any moment, something could go wrong, and I could wish that I had the extended warranty. So, am wondering if some of you can let me know how your MBP has fared, after the first year. Ok, thanks so much for this!

    Hi Kristina,
I'm a little biased, having served as a Mac Genius and AppleCare phone agent for Apple. But I will say, that there wasn't a shift that went by (for several years) where I didn't have to deliver bad news to someone that had a less than three year old machine (but older than a year).
With portables, I personally think it's a "no brainer." But allow me to elaborate. Apple, offers a "flat repair" for machines out of warranty with no signs of liquid or physical damage as the culprit. The flat rate runs about $350-$400. So even if you get one of those performed, for any reason, the AppleCare has already paid for itself.
I've had the pleasure of owning my MacBook Pro for going on 40+ months and there's been absolutely no issues with it. It's been possibly the best Apple portable I've owned in my 8+ years of supporting the company as a customer. But I've had some horror stories too, I had an iBook that saw the service bench... 7 times in 3 years. I had a Power Mac G5 that spent more time in repair shops over a 6 month period than in my possession.
I estimate, because I keep all my receipts that I've spent about $8,000 on AppleCare across all my machines since 2001. But I also estimate that I've received close to $44,000 in "out of pocket" repair costs that were paid for by Apple in the process.
One thing about computer issues, they always happen when you don't want them to... or when you can't afford them.

  • Broken ipod and apple care question

    Hi
I bought my 2nd gen nano 7 months ago and it is now broken. I've done everything I could beside opening it. I wanted to know if i bought apple care now and then send them my ipod right after if that would be problem?
btw the problem is that my songs gets played at 1/4 of the speed (makes the songs intrusting but...)
    thanx
    vince

I don't think the OP dropped his in the bathtub.
Hopefully you haven't tried to turn it on, connect it to the computer or anything like that.
If you are good with electronic devices you can take the iPod apart and set it in a cool, dry place and leave it there for several days. For pictures on how to take it apart go to http://www.ifixit.com.
If you aren't good at taking things apart, just set it aside or buy some silica gel packets (like the ones that come in boxes with things you buy, but you need new ones) and put them, and the iPod, in a sealed plastic bag and let it sit for a couple of days.
After it dries, connect it to power (a wall charger is preferable) for at least 30 minutes then Reset it (hold down the menu and center buttons for at least 6 seconds). If it starts up connect it to your computer, Restore it in iTunes, and then fully charge it.

  • Zagg/Apple Care question

I have an appointment at the Genius Bar because my phone is one of the 'lucky ones' that has a discolored screen. I had it about a week when I noticed that, when using certain apps and looking at photos, there is a circle-shaped discoloration on the screen. I've looked over the apple care info and I can't find that a Zagg screen protector will void the warranty, but I just wanted to make sure before I drive an hour to the nearest apple store. I'd hate to get there just to find out that they won't replace the phone because I had the Zagg.

Having a screen protector on your iPhone will not void the warranty. I have had 2 iPhones replaced under warranty over the last couple of years and they just remove the screen protector and take the old phone and give me the replacement phone.
