Question re. behaviour of single homed FEX with vPC

Hi Folks,
I have been looking at configuring Nexus 5Ks with FEX modules.  Referring to the Cisco documentation;
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5000/sw/layer2/513_n1_1/b_Cisco_n5k_layer2_config_gd_rel_513_N1_1_chapter_01001.html
In figure 3. showing a single homed FEX with vPC topology, I'm curious what happens if one of the 5Ks fail.  For example if the 5K on the left hand side of the diagram fails do the ports on the attached FEX that the server is attached to drop? If not I would assume that the server has no way of knowing that there is no longer a valid path through those links and will continue to use them?
Many thanks in advance,
Shane.

Hello Shane.
Depending of type of the failureboth n5k can tace corrective actions and end host will always know that one of the port-channel members is down.
For example if one 5k will crash or will be reloaded - all connected fexes alre will go offline. FEX are not standalone switches and cannot work without "master" switch.
Also links which will go from fex to the end-host will be in vpc mode which means that all vpc redundancy features/advantages will be present.

  • Single Homed or Dual Homed FEX

    With the ability to do enhanced VPCs now on the FEXs is there any benefit to have a mixture of having of single attached FEXs and dual homed FEXs?
    Here are some benefits as I see them
    Single homed FEX is easier to trouble shoot as the topology is not as complex.
    A dual homed FEX will support both dual attached hosts and a single attached host. So this means we only have one topology to deal with (everything dual homed)
    Any other pros or cons?
    Thanks

    If you have any servers with only one uplink, you want dual homed FEXes for redundancy.
    Also, it depend on the number of FEXes you are connecting to the same set of switches.  For example: the max number of FEXes that can be uplinked to a set of 6k switches is 24 if you are dual homed, but if you are single homed the max is 48 (24 per switch).

  • Converting Nexus 2000 FEX from Single Homed to Multihomed

    Greetings!
    I have a 2248TP FEX and two 5548UP Nexi.  Yesterday, one of the 5548s experienced an issue that caused it to go offline.  The FEX is single-homed to that 5548, and so everything connected to it went offline as well.
    I want to multihome the FEX to both 5548s to avoid future outages to the FEX should one 5548 go offline.  However, I am aware that both 5548s must have identical configuration for the FEX.  Will multihoming it cause the FEX to stop operating because 5548 #2 will come up with no configuration for the FEX?  I do not have the 5548s doing any configuration sharing, they are separately configured.
    I am on NXOS version 6.0(2)N2(4).
    Thank you!
    Henry

    Hi Henry,
    Before you do anything, you need to configure your 5548 switches with VPC.  You need to have one or 2 connections between the 5548s and configure them as VPC peer-link.  You also need to configure the out of band management port on each switch as your VPC peer keep-alive.
    Once all the VPC configs are complete, you can connect your FEXs to both 5ks and create a VPC for each one.
    Please refer to this document for config example:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/sw/design/vpc_design/vpc_best_practices_design_guide.pdf

  • Nexus 7000 and 2000. Is FEX supported with vPC?

    I know this was not supported a few months ago, curious if anything has changed?

    Hi Jenny,
    I think the answer will depend on what you mean by is FEX supported with vPC?
    When connecting a FEX to the Nexus 7000 you're able to run vPC from the Host Interfaces of a pair of FEX to an end system running IEEE 802.1AX (802.3ad) Link Aggregation. This is shown is illustration 7 of the diagram shown on the post Nexus 7000 Fex Supported/Not Supported Topologies.
    What you're not able to do is run vPC on the FEX Network Interface that connect up to the Nexus 7000 i.e., dual-homing the FEX to two Nexus 7000. This is shown in illustrations 8 and 9 of under the FEX topologies not supported on the same page.
    There's some discussion on this in the forum post DualHoming 2248TP-E to N7K that explains why it's not supported, but essentially it offers no additional resilience.
    From that post:
    The view is that when connecting FEX to the Nexus 7000, dual-homing does not add any level of resilience to the design. A server with dual NIC can attach to two FEX  so there is no need to connect the FEX to two parent switches. A server with only a single NIC can only attach to a single FEX, but given that FEX is supported by a fully redundant Nexus 7000 i.e., SE, fabrics, power, I/O modules etc., the availability is limited by the single FEX and so dual-homing does not increase availability.

  • How can I get a single jar file with NetBeans?

    How can I get a single jar file with NetBeans?
    When I create the project I get these files:
    dist/lib/libreria1.jar
    dist/lib/libreria2.jar
    dist/software.jar
    The libraries that have been imported to create the project are in separate folders:
    libreria1/libreria1.jar
    libreria2/libreria2.jar
    libreria1, libreria2, dist folders are all located inside the project folder.
    I added the following code to the build.xml:
    <target name="-post-jar">
    <jar jarfile="dist/software.jar">
    <zipfileset src="${dist.jar}" excludes="META-INF/*" />
    <zipfileset src="dist/lib/libreria1.jar" excludes="META-INF/*" />

    <manifest>
    <attribute name="Main-Class" value="pacco.classeprincipale"/>
    </manifest>
    </jar>
    </target>
    Of course there is also the project folder:
    src/pacco/classeprincipale.form
    src/pacco/classeprincipale.java
    Can you tell me what is wrong? The error message I get is as follows:
    C:...\build.xml:75: Problem creating jar: archive is not a ZIP archive BUILD FAILED (total time: 2 seconds)

    This is not a NetBeans forum, it is a JDeveloper forum. You might want to try http://forums.netbeans.org/. I also saw your other question - try looking in the New to Java forum: New To Java

    Hi Gregor:
    As per your request, I am reposting my question in this forum..
    Your excellent blog Single Sign on with External ID Implemented in Ruby shows how you can generate a sso cookie with the external ID mapping with the X.509 certficate.
    In my scenario, the user has already logged into R/3 via SAPGUI (so no need for SNC here) and run an iView on the Portal - if I map an external ID in the table  VUSREXTID (type NT)  for each of my users then can I call the rfc SUSR_CHECK_LOGON_DATA by passing Auth_method = E and Auth_data = External ID and will this rfc return a SSO cookie?
    Thanks

  • Using single SMB share with multiple Hyper-V clusters

    Hello,
    I'm trying to find out if I can use a single SMB share with multiple Hyper-V Clusters. Looking at:
    How to Assign SMB 3.0 File Shares to Hyper-V Hosts and Clusters in VMM
    I think it's possible. Since the File Server is going to handle the file locking it shouldn't be a problem.
    Has anyone tried that?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello,
    I'm not sure that's possible, I get this from this statement:"Assign the share—Assign
    the share to a virtual machine host or cluster."
    Even if it worked I wouldn't do that. Why don't  you just create multiple shares?

  • Single step workflow with multiple approvers (without using a group)

    Hi,
    is it possible to have a single step workflow with multiple approvers without using a group? This is for a contract document.
    i want to add a number of users based on particular logic. The approvers are random and do not belong to any particular group.
    DO let me know if it is possible or if any of you have done that.
    thanks in advance.
    regards,
    rubio

    Hi Rubio,
    I believe the behavior would be, if individual users are added as approvers then the system would require each approver to approve the document. However, if you use the user group, you could set the role so that it would be either ALL or ANY.

  • How do I create a single PDF file with multiple pages?

    Hi, I occasionally need merge several jpg images into a single pdf file with multiple pages (one Jpg per page). I have tried doing this on Preview, and by selecting all the pages I want to include in my document and trying to save to Pdf through the "Print" function, but every time it only saves the first page.
    Can anyone tell me if there is a way to save multple-page pdf files without having to purchase a specific program (i to this too infrequently to justify the cost)?
    Thanks very much,

    This works for me...
    Open first image in Preview View > Sidebar. Drag the other images into Sidebar, then select all.

  • How can you get the schedule of a single reoccurring job with Restart ability in Redwood to pause when it has failed...?

    We need the Request Restart ability when scheduling a single reoccurring job in Redwood. Most of our jobs are scheduled in CHAINs which offers the Final Status Handler on Step level, and the schedule is "paused" when a job in the CHAIN has failed ( the next instance does not populate until the OP MSG has been Replied to) , and once the OPERATOR message is replied to, the CHAIN can resume running again ( desired ) . But we need this same ability when scheduling a single job not in a CHAIN. In our testing, we set up a job with Request Restart chosen on the Error , Killed and Unknown selections on the Restart Behavior Tab. But we found when a job is scheduled say once a day at 8AM, and when it fails, an OPERATOR msg appears allowing a Restart choice ( desired), but the next day's schedule also populates ( undesired) and we do NOT want the schedule to continue on yet because we need a chance to fix the error before the next insance runs for business reasons. So how can you get the schedule of a single reoccurring job with Restart ability in Redwood to pause when it has failed...?

    Hello Fran,
    You can wrap the job chain in a master job chain in the first step and set the final status handler there.
    You can also set the Restart Behavior to 'Stop Submit Frame', in that case you will have to resubmit the job once you are finished troubleshooting.

    I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
    At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.
