Question Re: Disk Space Utilization after Updates

After updating to 10.5.3 this weekend I began to wonder about something. The download was a bit over 500 MB... during the actual install a prompt appears stating this would occupy approximately 1.6 GB ( not MB ) of disk space.
Do updates actually take up ( in this instance ) an ADDITIONAL 1.6 GB of disk space on top of whatever amount of space the original program/application occupies on the hard drive?
Thanks !

No. You need 1.6GB available for temporary and duplicate files which are deleted after the installation is complete.

  • Disk Space Disappearing After Today's Updates - Please help

Hi there everyone. I'm having major problems with my mac pro today, and for the first time, I cannot fix it. Please help me. I will try to explain what happenned. Like most, I was very excited about the release of ios 5 today. I downloaded the Lion 10.7.2 update, the ios 5 updates, iTunes and the iPhoto update. I installed of these without problems and then I enabled iCloud. I then decided to first update and restore my iPad 1 to ios 5. This worked perfectly fine and my computer was running fine. Then, I decided to update my iPhone 4 next. This is when I started running into problems. I updated it and then went to restore it from a a backup. This did not work, I got an error message that told me it was unable to restore the phone becasue it was unable to create backup.
So, I then checked the disk space for the main Lion drive and it was at zero. I thought, well I was sure I had at least a few gigs, but maybe I used them. So i deleted enough files to create 5GB of free disk space. I then tried to run it again, and I watched as my disk space slowly went down to zero again. I thought maybe it needed even more space than that. So I rebooted the machine and yet my disk space did not reappear. I had about 200mb when I rebooted. Then i noticed it was randomly fluctuating and went down to zero again. I then deleted another 3gb of files and created more disk space to try again. The same thing happenned again. I have now rebooted the machine again. When it first rebooted it had 500mb of disk space, it then fluctuated and went down to zero again. It is going between 67mb and zero every minute or two, and then goes up to 400MB, then reduces down to zero again. What is happenning? I have not opened any applications except for safari right now. Do we think there is a problem with my virtual memory or disk all of a sudden? It seems strange this happenned today. it must be related to one of the updates? I thought it might be icloud. So I have diabled that completely and the fluctuations have not stopped.
I would really appreciate any help anyone can give. I cannot think what the problem is. I cannot even run Techtool to check anything because nothing is working with no space for memory. Every time I delete files it goes down to zero anyway.
    Thank you very much

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Free disk space issue after iOS5

I have an iPad 1 16GB and after I updated to iOS5 the free disc space reduced so that now I have only 3GB free. 10,6GB is shown as "other". Can anybody tell me what this is and how I can increase the free disk space?

It shouldn't be that large unless, for example, you've got lots of videos in third-party video apps (or other third-party apps with large content) - it's usually caused by corrupt files. The only way the I know of reducing the size of 'other' is to restore back to factory defaults, and you could then try restoring to your backup which hopefully won't copy the 'other' back (or you might have to just sync content back and not restore to your backup).

  • Invalid Color Space error after update Reader to 9.3.3

After updating Adobe Reader to 9.3.3 I run into the Invalid Color Space error when trying to open a PDF file created with CorelDraw 12 in the format PDF/X-1A.  This format needed by a printing office to print the file. The strange thing is that Reader opens older PDF files exported from CorelDraw in thsi format normally without the error message.
It happens only with PDF exports made after the Reader update. CorelDraw settings are as previously used.
Exports in other formats, other than  PDF/x-1, X-1A and X-3 open normally.  How to solve this??

    any suggestions?

  • Disk space zero after netinstallation of PPC images

    Hi,
I have created 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 Tiger PPC netinstall images using SIU. After installing any of these images on any PPC machine via netinstallation, it shows available disk space is zero.
I see only error in installer log file is that "checksum failed" after installation and verification complete.
    Thanks,
    Rohit

I recently ran etrechek.app which stated I had 13Gb available and pronounced that low.
The information provided by that program is wrong. You had adequate disk space and there was no need to do anything. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume for normal operation.

  • Unrecoverable disk space loss after failure in scanning

I am using a Mac Mini with HP C410a for scanning.  The OSX verion is 10.7.1.  Because HP has not provided the special driver for lion, I have to rely on the Scan function of OSX.  The scanning process usually consumes huge volume of disk space.  For A4 document in color 600 dpi, it uses nearly 1G for 1 page. I have only 30G of free space, usually I can only scan about 25 pages.  At the end, there may be only several G left.  I need to reboot the system again to recover the disk space.  However, frequently there is error in scanning, even I reboot the machine again, I cannot recover the disk space.  Currently I have only 6G free space in my hard disk.  I have tried several cache deletion programs but they all fail to recover the lost disk space.
I have phoned the local Apple support but they failed to give me advice.

There is no legitimate way to downgrade an iOS version.
The "other" category is not the firmware/iOS.  The firmware/iOS is the majority of the difference between the 32 and 29.1 (or 28.3) GB The other part of the difference is due to how GBs are advertized and used by the iOS.  See:
How Mac OS X and iOS report storage capacity
The "other" category is normally less than 0.25 GB but can grow with corrupt files and things that really did not get deleted.  To reduce the size of the "other". a restore from backup sometimes works but sometimes a restore to factory defaults/new iPod is required.

    4. I started bootcamp again to try to remove the Windows partition, but there is only create Windows partition in the options.

  • Window - No Disk error message after update to iTunes 7.1

I updated to iTunes 7.1. After turning on iTunes for the first time after the download, I get a box that says "Updating iTunes Library". During this process, I get the dreaded error message: "Windows - No Disk" I clicked on it a few times and it went away. Then it came back and no amount of clicking would make it go away. At this point, iTunes no longer responds. I have gone thru this process now about 5 times.
    What is the fix?
Does Apple answer this issue anywhere or is it left to its customers to speculate about this stuff?

  • Question On Disk Space

Question: Will I need 46GB of free space for Logic 8?
My available right now is only 23.33GB of space, but I do have an external hard drive (120GB) could I instal the program on the hard drive and plug it in to use it?
    Apple says you'll need:
    • 7GB to install all applications and required content
    • Additional 39GB to install all optional content (large content packages can be installed on separate disk):
    – 10GB for Jam Pack collections
    – 16GB for sound effects
    – 6GB for surround music beds
    – 7GB for other optional content

    Hello,
I believe you have to install the program itself (7GB) on your main boot drive, but you do have options as to what and where you install the rest.
You can pick and choose, I did not install surround, sound effects, and other optional content on my powerbook to save a lot of space. I do remember that I could have installed it on my external, but I did not want to bring that with me on my small mobile system.
You will have to spend a little time looking through the content files to see if there is anything that you would use as you install. It is a simple check box drop down type of thing.
    Hope that helps.
