Question re PC2700 RAM

I know this is a silly question...but here goes...
How do I tell if my RAM is running at 266MHz or 333MHz?
System:
P4 2.4b @ 533MHz FSB
MSI 645E Max-U
1x512MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM
GeForce3 Ti 200 64MB
SoundBlaster Live 5.1
Belkin 10/100 NIC
LG CDR/W
Maxtor 6GB HDD
WD 60GB HDD

Let your bios auto-detect the ram (like it should unless you changed that option) so it will run optimally for you...
It should also say that it is running at either 266 or 333... 266 = 2100 and 333 = 2700.
Alternatively you could download a great little program for future reference called 'sandra' and do the memory test etc... sandra is totally free and tells you everything you could ever want to know about your components as well as the diagnosing tests that are included.
You can download sandra from the offical site here...

I hope that helps.

  • PC2700 RAM Power Consumption

I recently installed an additional 512MB stick of PC2700 ram in my mid 2005 iBook (total 1GB), but it roughly halved the battery life of my already crippled battery (down from 4400 to 1134 mAh in less than 18 months..), so i replaced it with a 256MB PC2700 stick from an old laptop.
This is OK, but ideally i'd like to have 1GB RAM, just without the reduced battery life. Now it would be great if there was an app that could limit the amount of ram that OS X uses, even better if it was built in to Energy Saver....... but something tells me that this isn't possible. Perhaps i will resort to cold swapping the ram stick when i want more performance.
Oh, and to repeat a question asked a zillion times, will my iBook run slower on leopard than tiger with 1GB ram? I have searched around, and there's a lot of conflicting and dated answers. I'm sure someone has done some benchmarks, a quantifiable "11.2% slower" or something.
    Thanks,
    Phil

Not anything a user would really notice.
The user may experience an increase in battery life because the virtual files on the hard drive would be used less.

  • Mix of PC3200 and PC2700 RAM

Just looking for opinions / facts about a test I'm doing.
I have a MDD G4 1.25 GHz that has been struggling along with 512MB of PC2700 RAM with Tiger for a few weeks. I recently got a good deal on some used PC3200 RAM and have put one in the machine. ASP reports:
    DIMM0/J21:
    Size: 512 MB
    Type: DDR SDRAM
    Speed: PC2600U-25330
    Status: OK
    DIMM1/J22:
    Size: 512 MB
    Type: DDR SDRAM
    Speed: PC2600U-30330
    Status: OK
My question is, is it OK to mix this RAM? Given that ASP does not accurately identify the PC2700 and PC3200 type are the last digits accurate? Is it OK to run the 25330 with the 30330? Seems to be working fine in the first 10 minutes ...

    Hi-
The difference between the 25330 and the 30330 is the CAS latency- 2.5 and 3.0 respectively.
If you have no problems at boot, I would assume you will have no problems.
On a G4, typically, mixing latency is not a problem, as long as it is faster than required.

  • K7t266 pro with pc2700 RAM

    is this ok?
cause pc2700 ram is actaully eaiser to find and infact cheaper not sure why..
but will it be ok with my mobo? do its a kingston brand
also kingston only sell cas 2.5 right?
    thanks for the help

Most actual boards need pc2700 so more pc2700-ram is produced than pc2100.
Pc2700 should work on your board but prearrange the chance of exchanging it with your dealer.

  • PC2700 RAM, where do I get these?

does anyone know where I can get
    2 512MB DDR PC2700 RAM modules for an eMac `education only`?
I can't seem to find them anywhere,
or not for a reasonable price, I did found one of €47,-
but other 512MB DDR modules are only €18,-
O and on a side note,
    I need them from a dutch store/site,
as I can't pay if there not

    re: foxofinfinety
When my iMac G4 1.25 17" USB 2.0 computer was under
AppleCare, and in for a service issue regarding a shipping
damaged chrome display arm, the company (compUSA)
at my request upgraded the internal RAM to 512MB and
that part was on sale. Later on, after it was discovered
the inCompUSA had appeared to have sold me a bad RAM
chip, and they no longer stocked that brand, my iMac was
in pieces in their shop. I live 100+ miles away, so my option
was to have them keep the computer and hope to get a
new piece of the same RAM under that RAM company's
warranty (maybe two months waiting) or buy another RAM.
    {and the original Apple 256MB chip was 200 miles r/t away.}
They had Centurion branded PC3200-DDR400 in 184-pin
RAM and that was said to be Apple certified; and it was
backwards compatible with the PC-2700-DDR333 spec in
the factory slot. Not a problem since then, 4 years ago.
Unfortunately, inCompUSA messed up the logic board while
the computer was under AppleCare and then was unable
or unwilling to troubleshoot and repair it. I did the trouble-
shooting and drove it in to inCompUSA, repeatedly over
a period of six months and about 6,000 miles, in my vehicle.
But the RAM was not the issue, ultimately. And I did get a
degree of satisfaction finally when I talked about the matter
direct with Apple support and they agreed to not have the
inComp people re-troubleshoot the computer, and instead
of me driving another thousands of miles fruitlessly to leave
the computer a week or two, for them to see if it would act
up as it did when I used it at home, the inCompUSA techs
were directed to replace the logic board with one Apple sent.
And that made three logic boards befuddled by inCompUSA.
The PC3200-DDR400 RAM should work in place of the
    PC2700-DDR333 184-pin RAM, if the PC3200-DDR400
is of the same voltage and other specifications needed
by the eMac to work correctly. While, iMac G4 USB2.0
    I have uses the same 184-pin (one) in the factory slot;
however it varies in the fact a second RAM chip in this
different unit is a 200-pin low-heat chip such as the last
iBook G4 mid-2005 would use as an upgrade chip.
And according to Mactracker database, among others
the aftermarket and later day RAM specs for the eMac
and iMac G4 USB2.0 computers show 2 GB total now.
So, for the cost of a padded envelope or small box with
bubblewrap and stiff cardboards inside, plus international
first class postage, the offer to get two PC3200 chips is
a good one. Or go to a PC shop with a printout of the
RAM specs for the PC2700-DDR333 RAM, and get some
such as one of the PC brands would have used; since
the only real issue may be in the speed or voltage and
a few details written in the specifications on the correct
RAM. And I mean information other than the large print.
This link should state the correct other RAM specs if
you can't find them in other known sources, including
the fact 2 - 1024MB chips are supported. They offer
the PC2700-DR333 chips, of 167MHz speed for eMac
and iMac G4 USB 2.0 (iMac second chip is a SODIMM.)

DDR3 RAM will not physically fit into slots that are designed for DDR2 RAM, so no, you can't use your MBP RAM in the MacBook. You'll have to buy the right RAM for it.

  • MS-6312 -- Questions on Upgrading RAM

    I have motherboard version MS-6312,
It came as part of a Gateway package.  They included 128MB of PC133 SDRAM.
I would like to increase the RAM in my system, without changing the motherboard.  I need to know the following:
    1)  The maximum capacity is 512MB on this board, right?  I would like to peak it at 512MB or whatever the max is.
    2)  There are two slots, will it recognize a single 512MB chip, or must I buy two 256MB chips?  I'm under the impression that it will not recognize a single unit, and I'll need to buy two of them.
    3)  Will 64x4 run on this motherboard, or do I need to buy a 32x8 chip?
    4)  I'm under the impression that this motherboard only supports up to PC100, despite the inclusion of a PC133 chipset on the base product.  What is the maximum that is actively supported by this motherboard?
Sorry for the trouble, I wasn't able to find this information on any of the websites. Gateway is full of complete morons as well.  They couldn't even tell me if I had pc100 or pc133 installed, let alone come ANYWHERE close to answering these questions.  The answers to a few of those questions, could well be the difference between a 50 dollar purchase, and a 250 dollar purchase.
Note:  I do not have a manual.  I may have lost it, but I'm pretty sure it was just never shipped with the product.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joseph

I can't find this type of RAM for sale anywhere.
Personally, I hate gateway products.  But it's what my g/f has installed, so I'm left without choice.
Gateway = Worst HD's and MB's possible.  They might promise a nice processor, some RAM, and maybe even a Vid card, but they slink and slime on everything else.
I've been working with her computer about 2 weeks now and notice the HD is , and the Motherboard is .  I can't upgrade anything, because everything is so horrible, and can't help but wonder if this was part of Gateways massive plan to make long term money.  The MB they installed was outdated when they installed it (A 512MB capacity MB, that uses 32Xxxx RAM installed in 2002?  Pathetic!!)
The bastards designed their system to make more money off tech calls that go, "Well, you want more RAM?  First, you need our newest great Motherboard!!!?  It's only 30843243 dollars!!"
The gateway techs couldn't even tell me what the speed of RAM installed was.  I say, "Listen, it must be there somewhere, I just want to know...I assume that it's PC100 or PC133 RAM, which is it?"
Gateway tech replies, "Uh, you have 128MB!!" and acts proud.  Freakin rejects.  I'm certified in A+ and CNNA, can't find a damn job anywhere, but these rejects get paid to know nothing.
They read off a database, with no tech knowledge.  The lady I talked to sounded like she would have difficulty giving me a callback number, let alone the type of RAM I had installed.
Gateway is such a rip.   bastards.  Reminds me once again why I have never bought a pre-made computer.

  • Can anyone answer this question regarding MAX RAM?

My old iMac SE DV graphite was purchased and delivered in January, 2000. The original order catalog (which I kept) claimed that it was "expandable to 512mb", as were all the 400mhz G3 slot-loading DV models in various 'flavors' including my Graphite Special Edition model. Also, both / all versions had the ATIRage 128 accelerator with 8mb SDRAM.
The only differences I can discern are that my Graphite has more ram (128mb) and had a slightly bigger hard drive (13GB on the graphite vs 10GB for the 'fruit').
Note: I have since replaced the hard drive with a 20GB since the original died within the first 2 years.
Also, I am running in 10.3.9 most of the time but still have OS 9.2.2 in the machine.
On this disussion site and other places (including MacWorld articles) I've seen conflicting statements as regards the MAXIMUM RAM my graphite should/could have. Some say 1GB (2x512) and some say 512 (2x256).
Can anyone once and for all, settle this question for me so that I can make an intelligent purchase?
(and thank you for the info re: PC100 as the way to go, not PC133)
    Thanks & Peace to all.

This question was answered in your other post by me. Max RAM is 1 GB.

  • PC2700 ram

I am looking to get new ram for my 800 mhz ibook G4. The apple web site says that I should get PC2100 ram, but also says that it is PC2700 compatible. If I buy the PC2700 will it be any different than the PC2100. Does it really matter?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Buy what's cheapest. Both will work equally well and run at PC2100 speed.

  • Pc2700 ram compatible

    Hi book worms ...
I have looked a little for an upgrade in ram, and my system says "use pc2100 or pc2400" but on the ram-guide
    "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302333"
    it says pc2700 compatible.
Now, if its only compatible, will my computer work as well as with pc2100 ram or better? Does it mean that I cannot use pc3200 ram at all and is there special ram type for ibook? No -right?
thx for any re bounce Phil

    Norman Ajlouny:
i I am bit confused about searching crucial.com's site when looking at the configurator versus knowing what to look for without assistance. I checked the link you provided at newegg.com and it is the exact same part number listed at crucial. However, I look for a compatible upgrade for my 12.1 iBook G4 w/512MB it tells me I need PC2100. The module is expensive, but my machine is running a PC2700 in DIMM1/J7. I don't know what the built-in memory is supposed to be (PC2100?) and would like to max out my memory bank.
Which machine, specifically? All the iBook G4 machines before the latest (Aug 2005) came with a recommendation for PC2100 SODIMMs. The latest two models should be using PC2700 SODIMMs. Newegg does carry a 1 GB PC2100 Crucial module.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145065
As for Crucial.com, here's a picture I took of my packing list, with personal info covered up.
    http://home.earthlink.net/~calvbfan/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/packi nglist.jpg
They refer to the *real* part number as "Material". That's the number on the module label and on the packaging. The "part number" on the slip is nothing more than an "ordering number" that describes a specific module/application combination (and possibly pricing differences). One of the criticisms of Crucial.com is their "dynamic pricing" system, where the identical memory might be sold at different prices depending on the application. The fact that it doesn't give you the real part number makes it difficult to do price comparisons with their wholesale customers like Buy.com or Newegg.

  • Question About Adding Ram from other laptop to T-series Thinkpad

    Hi,
I have a question about adding additional RAM. Right now I have a 4gb ram stick in the t510. I have an acer laptop which I do not need and there is a 4GB ram stick onboard (maybe two 2gb ram sticks) there in that older laptop. Would it be possible to add one stick of 2gb ram (or 4gb i need to check if it is 2 or 1) from the acer to the lenovo thinkpad making the total ram in the thinkpad over 4gb????
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Richk,
Yes, I am using a 64-bit operating system. I am running on windows 7. And as for reported incompatibilities....technically taking a RAM from another laptop and placing it in the laptop should be the same as purchasing a RAM card from ebay or something and putting into the laptop right?

  • 1024Mb/1GB DDR 333 Pc2700 RAM - low or high density???

Can anyone give me the simple answer to my dilemma?
Does the mainboard in the MSI MEGA 180 support low density (64*8) or high density (128*4) 1GB Pc2700 333MHz DDR RAM chips?
    Thanks.

Anyone know of a cheap LowDensity DDR RAM supplier? I can only find it at $125US - it must be available cheaper for a 1GB stick of PC2700 333MHz DDR RAM

  • Another question about upgrading RAM on G4 iMac

I know that there are numerous threads on this forum about upgrading RAM and I am sorry to have to open another one but, having read many of them, I am still confused!
I have unopened copies of Leopard and ILife 08 that I am planning to install on my 17-inch 1GHz G4 iMac with 768 MB of RAM (256 MB in the factory slot and 512 MB in the user accessible slot). I know that this model does not support all the functions of these programs but I am currently running Panther and the very first iLife so I think it's time for an upgrade!
Apple states that this model supports up to 1GB RAM so I have been thinking that in order to get the best out of the new software I should upgrade to 1GB RAM. My questions are:
    1. Do I need to upgrade or is the existing RAM of 768 MB likely to be sufficient?
    2. If I upgrade, how easy is it to add RAM to the factory slot? I have searched but can find no instructions on this here or on the Apple website which implies that this is not recommended.
    3. Several threads on this forum seem to suggest that, in order to avoid having to mess with the factory slot, it is possible to put 1GB RAM in the user accessible slot and leave the factory slot well alone, resulting in total RAM greater than the maximum recommended by Apple. Is this correct or have I misunderstood?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Do I need to upgrade or is the existing RAM of 768 MB likely to be sufficient?
That will probably be sufficient. You could always install and run both Leopard and iLife '08 and see if you feel that they are working OK before buying any RAM.
    2. If I upgrade, how easy is it to add RAM to the factory slot? I have searched but can find no instructions on this here or on the Apple website which implies that this is not recommended.
Apple does not post the directions because this is not considered something that a user can do by themselves.
You can see the process at www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/iMacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
That is correct. You could replace the 512 MB in the user accessible slot with 1 GB to provide a total RAM of 1.256 GB.

  • Specific questions about a RAM upgrade to 4GB on my MBP

I have a MBP model MA895LL/A. Currently populated with the original memory (2GB)
Recent clean install of Snow Leopard, with all current updates.
    Specific questions:
What memory does Apple use in their laptops? Does it really matter if you get the same manufacturer for complete compatibility?
Do timings matter? Will faster timing improve performance slightly, or is it a waste of money to go for the faster stuff on my specific model (Intel Core 2 Duo T7500)
Best to populate with 2 sticks X 2?
Finally, how about manufacturers? Anyone have any positive experiences with specific manufacturers, or, horror stories they can share?
I guess I just want to buy the best memory for my MBP. I build my own PCs, but I'm not sure if the Mac is a little more picky, RAM wise. Cost isn't really a factor. I'm willing to spend a little more, and buy the right stuff, and only do it once, without the hassle of sending it back, etc.
Any advice would be great. I know its possible this question has been answered many times before. I guess I don't know where to look...

Uh, yes, this is asked just about every day, like here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2154109&tstart=0
Using the "Search Category" box in the upper right works.
To answer your questions, since you likely have the 2 slots filled with 1GB DIMMs, you need to get a pair of 2GB to max the RAM. I guess you could use 1 OEM stick and one 2GB stick for 3GB total, but I would just go for 4GB. If you are under warranty, save the original RAM, as Apple seems to dislike seeing any 3rd party RAM no matter what. Put the OEM RAM back in if you need warranty work.
I've seen several brands OEM, a lot of Hynix and Samsung, but it is probably all well tested to Apple spec. Otherwise, brands mean nothing, but see the above linked thread. I prefer to go with the exact spec'd RAM myself. I believe "faster" RAM does not run any faster. Vendors mentioned in the linked thread all have selector aids to find the exact RAM for your model.

  • KT3 Ultra2 with PC2700 ram....

How do I make full use of the PC2700 with an Athlon XP 2000+? I'm using Samsung memory so it should go like the clappers...should I just set the fsb to 166 and keep memory timings to SPD. I can enable T1 command quite happily, but should I up the voltage to 2.8v?
    Thanks in advance,
    John

set your ram to run at 333 with aggressive settings thats about all you can do...if you put the fsb to 166 taking your cpu is unlocked that would be better cause your ram and cpu would both be running at 333
