Question re: Sprint card to connect to internet

My father lives out in the boonies where he cannot get high-speed internet. one of his neighbors told him that he uses a Sprint card and it works fine in his PC laptop.
Dad has a iBook and from what i understand, there's no slot for the Sprint card. what are his options for high-speed internet with a Sprint card and a computer that doesn't have the required slot???
Thanks!!

If his ibook has a USB slot, he can get a USB Wifi Adapter from Sprint as long as the version of OS X he is running on his iBook meets the USB card minimum system requirements.
I looked up the data plans today on the Sprint website, they are approx $40/mo for 40MB data transfer limit or Unlimited data transfer for $60/mo

  • Original Airport Card: Intermittent connection to internet

I have a wireless (netgear router) home network that has been running fine for over a year. Two dell laptops and Two iMac computers connect wirelessly w/o problems. Last week the iMac (original G4 FlatPanel) with airport card located in the basement start dropping the network (no network detected). All other machines still work fine. The laptop taken into the basement work fine.
The original iMac shows the airport power "on" but no network to connect to? Laptop show network and good signal strength. Next time I check the iMac, its connected with excellent signal. Next time....gone! This has been ongoing on for over a week now. As of late it's see no networks (there's 3 in my neighborhoos - mine and 2 others)
Is it interference? Faulty Airport card? Gremlins?
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

If you move the G4, having the problem, to another location nearer your router does it still exhibit these problems? You mentioned that if you tried with one of your Dell laptops, at the same location as the G4, it's working fine...correct?
I'm leaning toward your AirPort card in the G4 is failing vs. interference as the cause of your intermittent connections.

  • Using airport extreme card to connect iPhone to internet of mac ?

Is it possible to use a mac as wireless"base-station" for a iPhone by using an airport extreme card , if the mac is connected only by wire?
I created a network on my mac and my iPhone is connected to it, but it says the network is not connected to internet.
So can I connect the airport extreme card on my mac to the ethernet of my mac by changing the network settings on my mac?

  • Airport card working but can't connect to internet

    hi all,
airport card (just plain airport card) is working and is connected to a verizon fios router. signal very strong. just can't connect to internet via safari, camino or firefox. running 10.3.9 os. i've rebooted twice to no avail.
altho, i can connect on my g4 powerbook using the same router.
why isn't the g4 flat panel imac connecting? any ideas?

In the Network system preference panel, is the wireless component
selected and in the list of items in the configuration the Mac sees?
You can drag the item(s) into preferred order of use, if there is more
than one, ie: dialup modem, ethernet connection, airport base.
If both computers have a similar operating system, it may be an
idea to look carefully into each, and not change anything in the
one which appears to work correctly; to look for differences.
Does the wireless router provide support for 802.11/b as well
as wi-fi 802.11/g? The older airport card runs on the older spec.

  • Cannot connect to internet with iMac connected to airport via Ethernet

    Hi all,
Firstly please forgive if this problem has been posted before but unfortunately i haven't yet been able to find a solution to my problem.
I cannot seem to get my wireless network to work since updating my Airport to v5.7. I have reverted back to 5.6 but with no joy. OK, here's my setup - I have an iMac G5 1.8 which is connected to my airport via an ethernet cable (it is plugged into the correct port) and an iBook with an Airport card to connect wirelessly. The airprot is connected to my ADSL modem which is a D-Link 300T. When set up like this my iMac cannot connect to the internet even though my iBook can. When i take the4 iBook and Airport out of the equation my iMac connects fine to the internet via ethernet cable direct to my modem.
As i've said, as soon as i bring in the iBook and Airport the iMac cannot connect via airport extreme, even though the iBook can connect.
I have searched through the discussions looking for clues and answers. I have made sure that distrubute IP address is not checked and that internet sharing is off on my iMac but on on my iBook. I have tried all channels and all possible different settings on the airport admin utility but nothing works.
I hope i've given enough information to give a clear indication what is wrong, if not please ask and i will try my best to answer. Any help would be much appreciated so i can convince my girlfriend that buying my iBook was not "a waste of money!".
    Many thanks in advance,
    Carl.

    Same questions as Paul.
Open up the Network System Pref on the iMac G5.
If you pick Show: "Network Status", what do you see ? Be precise.
If you change Show: to "Built-in Ethernet", what do you see on the TCP/IP, PPPoE and Ethernet tabs ? Again, be precise.
On the Network Status, you should see a green mark next to Built-In Ethernet, which should be at the top. It should also give you an IP address and tell you you are connected to the Internet. Well it would if it was working, so "say what you see".

  • Slightly damaged airport card, unstable connection, & malloc errors? Fixes?

    Hello!
I've got a 500 mhz iMac G3, running 10.3.9 with 256 MB of ram - and may add more soon. It has an original Airport card installed, via the Airport adapter. This card has a dent in one of the sides, but seems to power on fine.
Here's the problem: if I click on the Airport symbol in the menu bar, the iMac can see our home network with the Airport card installed - so I know the card is at least working in this regard. If I select the network and enter the WEP key, it sits there for a moment before giving a "There was an error connecting to the AirPort network * SSID *." box. Clicking "Try again" hasn't helped. Interestingly, the "Console.log" log shows a list of malloc errors:
"* malloc[@@@]: error for object 0x3----0: Double free", where the dashes are various hex values, and the @@@ differs by application: Attempting to connect via Internet Connect gives a @@@ of 385, while attempting to connect via Network Setup Assistant gives a @@@ of 329, and attempting to connect via the airport menu bar icon gives a @@@ of 208. These errors seem to appear when I type the WEP key in.
To see if the airport card was broadcasting, I tried to setup a computer-to-computer network from the iMac, then connect to it from my G4 (400mhz, Tiger, 1.5 GB RAM, Original Airport card). The network initialized OK, but the G4 could not see it. Entering the SSID manually into the Internet Connect application still gave a "There was an error connecting to SSID" box. I then noticed that the iMac kept "disconnecting" and "reconnecting" to its own network every 10 seconds or so, as if the Airport card kept resetting. I also tried creating a network on the G4, then connecting to it from the iMac to see if it could join and if the malloc errors kept showing up - it coudn't join or see the network, but there were no malloc errors in the console!
This is the same problem that occurred when I put the card into another old iMac. Therefore, I believe that it's a problem with the individual card, not the system. At the same time, the fact that the memory allocation errors occur when I enter the WEP key - and not at other times - is a little odd. I've assumed that the dent in the card was the problem before, but now I'm beginning to suspect a firmware issue with the card itself.
    So, the questions:
    A. Is there a firmware update for the card?
    B. Is there anything else I can try? I will try to setup an open network to test the card then.
    C. If the damage to the card is the culprit, then the card is useless and must be replaced, correct?
    D. Is there somewhere I can find an original airport card for (well) under the $150 or so you usually find it online? I am aware that they are old and hard to find.
    Thanks a bunch,
    -Dan

See my post about using the WaveLan card out of an old graphite "flying saucer" Airport Base Station. My iMac accepted one as an Airport card. The old ABSes are cheap since they don't work with new releases of OS X any more.

  • Ipad can't connect to internet using 30 pin

    Hi
My question is i am trying to connect to Internet using Ipad 2 WIFI version only.  By using 30 pin connector connects to my Mac Mini.  I thought this is supposed to work and able to connect to the internet, but it isn't happening.
I don't have WIFI access at this location so i need to connect to Internet by using Mac Mini as tethering.
    Please help or advice.
    thanks

You can create an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network on your Mac Mini using the built in airport card and network sharing pane.
Provided that you Mac Mini is on this will broadcast a Wi-FI signal that you can you can now connect your iPad to.
    Step by step
click on Apple menu and open System Preferences
Under Internet & Wireless click on the Sharing folder
In the left hand pane tick Internet sharing
In the right hand side where it says Share your connection from select Ethernet
Under To computers using tick Wi-Fi
Now click the Wi-Fi Options button
You are now going Add a name for your Wi-Fi Network  (It will broadcast its SSID by default)
    Select a channel select 6 or 11
Set a security level and password click ok. RIGHT DOWN THE PASSWORD !
Now go to your iPad .
Tap on Settings then Wifi and slide the Wifi button to on and allow iPad to scan for your network name.
When found tap on it and in the next window enter the password as written down.
You iPad will now be sharing the Mac Mini Internet and should allow you to use Safari/ e-mail etc......
All cable free as far as the iPad is concerned.

This might be one of the more confusing and less than clear questions I have come across here.  I don't use gnome or really any of this software that you use.  But from what I can decipher above, you seem to have two problems.
First, it is not connecting consistently.  In order to fix this, you reinstall the software?  Am I reading that right?
Second, once you do get a connection, you experience a kernel panic?  This is where the kernel has an oops and cannot recover, so it dumps its contents/errors to the screen.  Is this what is happening?
Basically, you need to be more clear about what you are experiencing.  It would seem that English is not your first language, but that should not stop you from at least phrasing your question in a way that says more than "I click this" and "I click that".  Have you checked your logs at all to see if there is anything revealing there?

    Wi-Fi Setup Considerations
Things to consider before you begin
Start with a plan for the physical layout. Depending on whether you have an existing Wi-Fi network, or if you are using your AirPort Express as a standalone Wi-Fi device, there are several options available for you to choose from.
When using Ethernet, Cat6 cable is recommended.
The layout you choose should take into account environmental factors such as physical access, location, range, radio frequency interference, etc.
You will need to consider what AirPort Utility settings to adopt.
You will need to know whether you are using an AirPort Express (802.11b/g) or an AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g/n).
If you will be using more than one Wi-Fi base station, it may be helpful to read the article Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations.

  • Safari says not connected to internet on certain sites when connection is good and IMG[] images don't show up anymore?

I recently updated to 10.6.8 from 10.5.x and have been having some issues.  First, Safari will say that my computer is not connected to the internet, but it is.  I can be on YouTube, for example, and then try to go to eBay, and it will say not connected to internet, but I can go to Google and it will be fine without doing anything.  Almost like it cannot connect to the server, but the message is that I'm not connected to the internet.  I can turn Airport off and back on and get on most pages that wouldn't open originally.  It's not site-specific.  Sometimes it's Google, Facebook, eBay, YouTube, forums, etc. and other times those same sites work just fine.
The next problem, which I feel is related is that IMG[xxx] images won't open some of the time now on forums that have Photobucket and Tinypic IMG codes inserted into threads.  It will just show the blue box with a question mark.  I think that's because my Safari can't open the image hosting websites because sometimes when I click on the blue box to open the link, it says not connected to the internet and Photobucket seems to be one of the regular problem sites.
I've tried clearing my cache, reseting Safari, and a few other suggestions on here from similar problems, but I haven't seen a post describing my same issues exactly.  I have not tried Firefox and would prefer to keep using Safari.

    Try repairing permissions.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup  disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Select:  Repair Disk Permissions
This can take a few minutes and better to not use your Mac while it's running.
When it's finished, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
