Question - Saving as ePub in Digital Editions

I have digital editions installed to manage by ebooks.  Since I am having issues with some books being too small to read comfortably on screen in pdf format, I was going to try and purchase a couple of new books and "save" them in epub format.  It seems like they keep automatically saving in .pdf, and I can't figure out how to get them into epub format.  When I buy the books, it reports the books as supporting adobe formats or whatever, but there doesn't seem to be anything that specifies if that is pdf or epub.  How can I either specify that, or have digital editions do that conversion so that I have the reflowable read.  My device (Kobe reader) supports either.

I seem to be caught between various support organizations with something I don't understand.  When I click on the info for the book on the Penguin website, it reports that book is "eBook: Adobe reader", it doesn't specify either .pdf or .ePub.  I get the .acsm file, and dowload the book in Adobe Digital Editions, and the result is that I have a .pdf book on my PC hard drive that I can then use digital editions to connect to the device and transfer.  Penguin support seems to be stuck on it being a digital editions problem.  Here was their response, of course it was less than helpful and I sent another question into them.  I guess bottom line is if I could tell if a book was .pdf or .ePub before I bought it, or could specify the format it was retrieved in, I would continue to purchase, barring that I can't continue.  Would you have any advice on how I could phrase my question to them?
Consumers using Adobe/Acrobat Reader Version 8 or earlier may not be able to open certain eBooks and should attempt to download and install the latest version of Digital Editions, which provides the eBook capabilities integrated with previous versions of Acrobat and Reader.
Our eBooks are digitally rights managed (DRM) and can be opened with Adobe Digital Editions--.ascm is the file extension used by Adobe Digital Editions to read DRM eBooks--such as ePub or PDF.  Please confirm that you have registered and activated Adobe Digital Editions with your adobe ID. If you have already done so, please provide the specific error message you are getting when you try to open the .ascm file with adobe digital editions.

The Adobe and ePub formats that are sold on the Penguin Group (USA) web site cannot be transferred Kindle or to Apple devices; however, eBooks offered in eReader format are supported by Apple devices through the use of applications such as eReader and Stanza.

  • InDesign CS5.5 EPUB export not showing cover image in Adobe Digital Editions

I have a document that I am trying to ensure is reflecting the cover image prior to uploading to several EPUB sites like google and Barnes and Noble. I am using Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Firefox (EPUBReader) to do the troubleshooting on the document. Calibre shows the cover image Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) does not. Are their any known problems with ADE not reflecting the cover image that I need to be aware of before I continue working on this?
The ADE help says the following:
"Once the items are in your library, there are two ways to view the content of any bookshelf. You can view thumbnails of your items. The thumbnail is the cover page of the item (or just the first page if it doesn't have a cover page). In this view, you see the set of thumbnails and some information about each item (author, title). You can also sort the order in which the items are shown by author, title, date created, number of pages, and so forth."
Here is basic informaiton. I have a cover page in my export to EPUB but ADE will only show the first page. Again Calibre shows the cover page.
    CS 5.5
The project is a book (indb) composed of multiple documents (indd)
Exporting as book as an EPUB
On general tab I am "Use existing image"
I am rasterizing the first image in Indesign via the "Object - Object export options" but I am not selecting that option when on the general tab of the Export to EPUB options. I am chosing a file from my disk. I thought that maybe the file name was too long but I changed the image to "cover.jpg" and reexported it but it still does not work.
Here are the contents of the content.opf file with all the pointers. I have updated the file as I believe you can tell with guides, creation date, etc....
    It passes the SIGIL check.
The image name is Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg. It is 300 dpi and 1650 x 2550. I could also cut in the one that I did for cover.jpg but it only replaces the file name.

I have also been trying to get this cover image to display on PC for NOOK but it appears that everyone is having hits problem too. I have followed some trouble shooting guides and renamed the jpg image, Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg to cover.jpg but that doesn't seem to work either for NOOK.
Any help you can give would be appreciated. I am new to InDesign (I know you probably hate hearing that, but I have gotten so close to being done overcoming all the new user hurdles). I think this is my last one before uploading to the appropriate sites - PS. I got the cover page to show up on the Kindle but not Adobe's own product.
    Thanks

ebookjunkie, I have just used InDesign to publish two very short "books" (.99 cent variety) and started this thread with the first question. Look to Bob for the expert advice. This is neophyte advice from someone moving from publishing a full book using Word to EPUB/Kindle and now using InDesign to publish to EPUB/Kindle.
First ADE is useless. I say this out of frustration of trying to use it to troubleshoot problems and it has so many problems in displaying an EPUB that you spend a lot of time troubleshooting ADE issues rather than EPUB problems. The problems are not limited to but won't display a cover page properly, text wrapping is iffy, Drop caps a problem, bringing over supported items like drop caps, all small caps, etc.... are also issues as best I can tell. Humble opinion is delete off your desktop. I use the following to troubleshoot my EPUB's/Kindle books on my Windows platform; Calibre, Barnes and Noble's Nook for PC and iPhone iTunes for EPUB (Sigil to look for errors); and for Kindle, Kindle previewer and Kindle for the PC. Even after doing this, I just today saw my book a buyer's Android "Reader" and the pictures did not display at all. So it is publish once and test everywhere! Unfortunately, you just can't test all the possible devices and iterations of readers. (I am from IBM and we couldn't do it, so how publishers are supposed to figure it out is beyond me!)
On the absolutely great news end, you will see a lot of problems about placing images on the iPad with a lot of workarounds. They apparently (Apple) have fixed this as my two publications show images nicely now on both the iPhone and iPad with the iTunes bookshelf/reader. They were "microdots" when viewed previously. I did nothing to fix it and was just not going to publish to the iPAd and just tested them a few weeks ago and they display perfectly. So Apple has fixed the problem. If it looks good on the Nook for PC, it should look good on the iPAD/iPhone now as best I can tell.
    Cheers

  • How to view an epub file in digital editions in SINGLE PAGE CONTINOUS mode?

how can i get the full screen real-estate when viewing an epub? On my laptop which has a screen res of 1600x900 i can maximize the view to one page at a time, but when i do the same thing on my desktop or dock to my 24" monitor of resolution 1920x1080, digital editions insist to show me in 2-page side-by-side view. i have to make the digital editions window slightly smaller or expand the table of contents from the left side of the screen in order to make it 1 page layout.
and yes, i have clicked the increase text size button as much as i can, but it canot be clicked anymore)
    ALSO......
why can't i just scroll continously like if i'm viewing a pdf? (i can only see one page at a time, from top to bottom, but if i flick my mouse wheel, it goes to the other page instantly and so on).
i am totally hating on this software right now. looking for any alternatives that can do said features above.

Looks like i've just answered my own question here. After searching around on the net desperately...
I've just switched to SONY Reader for PC. The software can show me a page in full-screen with just ONE PAGE at 1080p resolution, and I can increase the font size alot more. Also, It has history of what pages I read and so on. I am uninstalling this worthless software known as Adobe Digital Editions.
Everything about it is much faster too and doesn't feel like the flash spinoff that ADE is.
Sorry for bashing, but just speaking the truth.

  • Fixed layout epubs from InDesign in Adobe Digital Editions look terrible...what is going on?

I am preparing a fixed layout v3.0 epub from an INDesign CC 2014 document.  The book is 178 pages with embedded imges throughout.  The resulting epub when opened in Digital Editions looks ghastly...enormous overlapping type; epub said to have 758 pages when the original has 178 pages.  The same file opened in iBooks looks beautiful.
    What's wrong with Digital Editions?

  • Saving a DRM book to pendrive/external disk to later download and read it on personal notebook (with Adobe Digital Editions)

    Hello.
I installed Adobe Digital Editions on my mother's personal computer and activated my Adobe ID in order to be able to purchase, download and read DRM books there.
But is it possible to save the DRM books to a pendrive or external hard disk, so that I can "carry them" and later download and read them on my personal notebook (having previously installed Adobe Digital Editions and activated my Adobe ID in the notebook)?
I don't know if DRM books can be saved to pendrives and external hard disks...
    Barbara

Incidentally, you do know that you can buy kindle or Nook apps for your ipad? I was assuming you wanted a DE-specific app.
EDIT Actually, those apps are free--you just pay for what you buy through them, if that helps you any.
Incidentally, O'Reilly, my publisher, uses PDF for real galley purposes, although they do create epub editions of their books for distribution. You might want to ask the publishers you work with if there's another format available.

  • Previewing epub in adobe digital editions, it says "author unknown"

I filled in all the metadata in InDesign (CS5.5), exported to epub, opened to preview in Adobe Digital Editions. All looks good, except it says "author unknown." Does anyone know about this? How to get "author  name" to show up?

Thanks, Steve. Since I'd naively applied styles after having created the indd book, I'd had to apply styles to each doc. in the epub files, so now I've put the metadata into each of those files, and lo and behold, now the author name shows up in ADE. Much thanks for the tip.
