Question to Ipod Shuffle users

I am thinking about buying 2 ipod shuffles to store inside a stuffed animal to give to my children while they sleep, and then when they get older they can use them as well. My question is does it play loudly or at all when the headphones are out? I know the nano does, but wasn't sure about this because it's so simple! Thanks in advance!

Hello there,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
My question is does it play loudly or at all when the headphones are out?
No. The iPod shuffle has no external speakers like the 5th generation iPod nano. Sorry. I like the idea though.

• Apple Support: Distressing under performance on simple questions: new iPod Shuffle battery never gets charged.

New in the mail the other day: iPod Shuffle. Works great, except it has never indicated that the battery is charged (orange lamp continuously blinks.) Should I send it back? Simple enough question right?
So I go to the Support site, enter a ticke with my Apple ID and the S/N of my new device, express via choosers that it's a battery issue ... but there is no ability to even say what I did above just now.
Of the support alternatvies, I schedule a call. The phone call came over 30 minutes later than was scheduled. And then! The operator didn't have the information that I'd taken time to enter in to the webforms -- critically, the S/N, etc. I expressed a bit of frustration, we ended the call after I'd recited as much as she could take notes for. Later I get an email from her (bless her spirit!) ... with all of the links I read BEFORE going to effort of filling the support documents out and scheduling the call.
I'm really wierded out by this. APPLE COMPUTER -- THIS IS BABY FOOD BASIC CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT!
So, do I send the little stinker back or just live with having purchased a defective device from a company incapable of supporting it?!!!!

I don't think it is defective. The light will ALWAYS blink orange when connected to iTunes, if the shuffle is set to Manually manage music (or Enable disk use). You can check the setting on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes.
Blinking light - This means DO NOT DISCONNECT. Eject shuffle before disconnecting.
Solid light - This means OK TO DISCONNECT.
A solid green light does mean battery is fully charged, but it will never blink green. There is an eject button next to the shuffle in iTunes. When you eject the shuffle and leave it connected to the computer, you should see the light become solid green (if the battery is fully charged).

I am a new iPod shuffle 4th Generation user and I cannot sync the music in my Windows Media play to my new iPod, can someone help?

Hi Daisymae3,
The iPod shuffle does not use Windows Media Player to sync, it uses Apple’s iTunes application, available for free from this web site -
Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now

See also the manual for your iPod shuffle -

• IPOD SHUFFLE given as a gift with no software, how do i set it up?

Ive been given a ipod shuffle with no software and have downloaded the updates but it still is unresponsive, can i still use it if i dont have the original disks?
i currently have an ipod mini as well.

First, read through the iPod Shuffle User's Guide and see what it is that you're supposed to be doing. Also take a look at the content at the iPod Shuffle Support Page.
Post back with specific questions based on the above, but do try to provide a workable level of detail. Not sure what I mean by that? Try answering this:
"My Subaru is unresponsive! What's up with that?"

Hi friends
I bought a IPOD shuffle(1 GB) yesterday. I have plugged it to my laptop and transfer few songs. I kept connect to laptop for around 2hrs.
I thought we need to charge when we get new one. I dont know whether it is charged or not. because when I switch it on. and pressed play button for 3 sec as they should in instructions.
first I got a green light for 1 sec . then light turn to orange for 1 sec and it became blank there was no light.
Now I feel the IPOD is not charged. and it it is not working when I switch it on.
If anyone faced same problem for first. Please help me what I have to do.
Is there any spl procedure we need to fallow when we get a new one.
Or there is something gone wrong. I am bit worried it is not even 1 day old.
Please suggest me what I need to do.

Hi friends
I bought a IPOD shuffle(1 GB) yesterday. I have
plugged it to my laptop and transfer few songs. I
kept connect to laptop for around 2hrs.
So you didn't follow the instruction? See page 8 of the iPod Shuffle Users Guide which says:
"The first time you connect iPod shuffle, leave it connected for about four hours to charge the battery fully."
FORGET about the 2hr 80% charge stuff on page 16.
DO THAT... THEN we can continue examining how the controls work on page 15.
I thought we need to charge when we get new one. I
dont know whether it is charged or not. because when
I switch it on. and pressed play button for 3 sec as

See page 15... that action results in disabling the

Follow what I've told you AND familiarize yourself with the contents of the iPod Shuffle Users Guide the pointer to which you'll find on the iPod Shuffle support page http://www.apple.com/support/ipodshuffle/
I hope this helps.

• Ipod Shuffle as external disc?

Whenever I connect my ipod shuffle to my Windows laptop, the amber light blinks continuously and ITunes will not open up automatically. It always opened up itunes automatically but then it suddenly stopped and started opening up as an external disk. On page 18 of the ipod shuffle user manual, it tells me how to "enable using ipod shuffle as a disk"...when in itunes, select Ipod shuffle in the source list and click the Options button. Well, I click on my ipod shuffle in the source list, but I can't find any "options" button that looks like what is in the user manual. I was thinking that if I find this "Options" button I could disable my ipod as an external disk.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get my ipod shuffle to not always open up as external disc? Thanks

Connect your Shuffle and in iTunes go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and untick the "enable disk use" box: Using your iPod as a storage drive

• Ipod shuffle not turning on and not even charging now...

Okay I just went to turn on my Ipod shuffle (Second generation) and it won't turn on! I tryed charging it and the green light was on but wasn't blinking.. then after like 10 minutes it went off and now it won't even go on. It still won't turn on and it's not that old. I got it at Christmas. Some one help me please. >_<. And if any one feels like it and gets time could you dfo me the big favor of e-mailing me the answer at [email protected]? Thanks a lot everyone.

Okay.. Well.... I wrote above (Second Generation).
And the LED light has always blinked green when I've
put it into the charger. The only time Ipod shuffle
isn't suppsoed to blink is when inserted into a non
high speed USB port. I'm using the same USB port I've
been using. So I have no clue what's wrong. It was
raining yesterday and it may have gotten a little wet
but not more then a few drops and I don't think that
should be the prtoblem as others have washed theres
by accident before.
Please tell me how the following description of status light behavior of the 1st Gen shuffle matches what you've said above:
from page 16 of the iPod shuffle User Guide:
To charge the iPod shuffle battery:
Remove the USB cap and connect iPod shuffle to a high-power USB port on your computer. The battery status light on the back of iPod shuffle turns on. The iPod shuffle battery is 80-percent charged in about two hours, and fully charged in about four hours.
When the battery is charging, the iPod shuffle status light is amber. When the battery is fully charged, the light is green until you disconnect iPod shuffle. If you don’t see the status light, try another USB port on your computer. Note:
If iPod shuffle is being used as a disk (see page 18), the status light blinks amber continuously.
Here's the 2nd Gen shuffle version:
When the battery is charging, the status light on iPod shuffle is orange. When the battery is fully charged, the status light turns green.
Note: If iPod shuffle is being used as a disk (see page 19) or if iTunes is loading songs or settings onto iPod shuffle, the status light blinks orange...

• Playing ipod shuffle in car

My ipod shuffle plays through my car speakers but all music is random. It won't play the playlists in the order that they are in in itumes, which is really annoying. May as well listen to the radio if random songs just play!
Any ideas how to get playlists to play in the order they are listed in itunes?

Hello Eliza,
You can set the iPod shuffle to play the songs in order or to shuffle the songs by adjusting the 3-way switch. When the switch is in the middle, it will play the songs in order. When the switch is all the way over to the left, it will shuffle the songs:

• IPod shuffle - 1418 on restore

• Some songs can't be loaded on 2nd gen ipod shuffle (question with answer)

I'm getting the following message when trying to load some songs on to my 2nd gen iPod shuffle:
"Some of the items in the iTunes library, including 'Allegro', were not copied to the iPod "iPod" because they cannot be played on this iPod." When I click on the details triangle I get "Allegro" was not copied because the audio format is not supported by the iPod "iPod".
This is happening for many songs that were previously loaded on this iPod. The songs were all loaded into iTunes from CDs. I have tried the iPod reset utility, deleting all songs and reloading, selecting a single song to sync, no luck.
When I do a "Get Info" on these songs they say they were encoded with either iTunes 6.0.5 or iTunes 7.0.2.
OK. Even before I was able to post the question, I found the answer. If I select the songs and from the "Advanced" menu select "Create AAC version", the AAC version can be copied to the iPod. Get Info shows the encoding has changed so AAC and iTunes 9.0.1.
Hope this helps someone else with a similar problem.
david.

You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

You do not. Content is permanently tied to the Apple ID that it was acquired with.
Sign out of the computer with the new Apple ID. STOP using the new Apple ID.
Sign in with the original Apple ID that the content was acquired with.

• First-time user of IPod Shuffle, my husand has an IPod Touch and has hundreds of songs already on his ITunes account. If Is it possible to have two ITunes accounts so his music is not automatically loaded onto my new Shuffle?

Just bought an IPod Shuffle; my husband has an IPod Touch and has hundreds of songs on his ITunes account. Is it possible to have two different accounts on the same computer to prevent his music from being loaded onto my Shuffle?

When you say "iTunes account," I think you mean iTunes library. An iTunes "account" is what you use to sign in to the iTunes Store (your Apple ID) and purchase songs (and other media). The iTunes library is what you have on your computer, with your songs and playlists. That is what you use for syncing iPods.
You can have a separate iTunes library. If you create a new user account on your computer (using Windows) and log in to that user account, iTunes will create a new iTunes library for that account. In fact, Windows will keep ALL of your documents separate, as if you are using a separate computer. That is probably the best way to keep your songs in a different iTunes library.
You can also create a separate iTunes library in the same Windows user account, if you use this procedure to switch between iTunes libraries
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1589
Also, you can use the same iTunes library, and decide what songs you want put on the shuffle. iTunes does not automatically put songs on the shuffle, unless you tell it to do so. This document explains how to load content on shuffles
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1719
NOTE: If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar. When connected, your shuffle appears in the sidebar, under DEVICES.
FYI - There is a link to the shuffle user manual on this support web page for the shuffle

• IPod shuffle is in use by another user

when I try to connect my iPod shuffle, it tells me that it is in use by another user on my computer. The reality is that I am the main and only user of the computer. I have created other accounts. They do not use iTunes or iPod.
The problem occurred when I had to force iTune to quit as it was not responding.
I re-installed the iPod software using iPod Updater 2005-09-06.

Same here!
The message first appeared after I duplicated then archived the iTunes Library to fix another problem (iTunes Library is locked - see: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=796682&ft=y&#796682 )

• IPod shuffle software update status different between users

With User 1, iTunes 7.0.2 says my 2G iPod shuffle is up to date (software version: 1.0). If I switch to User 2 and plug the same iPod shuffle into the dock, then iTunes says there's an iPod sofware update available (version 1.0.1). I decline the offer to update. Going back to User 1, no update is suggested (version 1.0 is current).
Why does iTunes report a different software update status depending on which user is active? I don't think there's a software version 1.0.1 for the 2G iPod shuffle.
There is no ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/ folder for either user.
iMac G5 (B) 20-inch Mac OS X (10.4) 2.0 GB RAM

I found the solution on MacOSXHints:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060912144151766
Summary: on the Summary tab, click Restore (will pop up a confirmation dialog), then Cancel, and the Update button then indicate version 1.0.1 for User 1. Then click Update. iTunes did the update, no muss, no fuss.

• Ipod Shuffle Storage Question

Hello,
I own a 2GB 4th Generation IPod Shuffle.
My current playlist is I-Tunes says that I have 132 items with 10.4 hours of content at 1.13 GB. But when I look at my storage space status on my I-Pod, it says that I am over capacity.
Why does it say I'm over capacity when I'm clearly not?
When syncing my I Pod, I manually manage my music instead of using the Autosync. Could this be part of the problem/reason?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank You
PS: I apologize in advance if this question has already been brought up.

UPDATE.....
Something really screwy is going on here
I got rid of 4 of my songs on my playlist and freed up around 0.03 GB of capacity
I then put those 4 same songs from my library back on my playlist and when I synced it still had that 0.03 GB of free capacity
I also notice that when I download a podcast from the itunes store into my itunes library, the space that the podcast would use up shows up on my ipod capacity bar, eventhough I haven't downloaded it to my ipod yet!!!...wierd.
I wonder if should just delete my entire playlist and create a new one from scratch with the exact same songs.
