Question to N71 developers.

What is dictophone intended for if it beeps every 3 sec and limited by 1 min?
What do you think I feel after spending my five hundreds dollars for features I never will use?

Most products (phones, PCs, TVs, PVRs, software) have features that are not useful to every person.
If you don't want to pay for features that you're not going to use, buy only products that only contain features important to you.
However, if you are the only person that wants a particular mix of features, then manufacturers are not yet capable of doing custom products just for you in a cost-effective way, so such products will be even more expensive (much, much more expensive).
As to the voice recorder: It is not really a dictaphone, but originally intended for making and sending short voice clips/messages as MMS (and there the size is limited as to what is passed from one device to another).
When I use it to record something, there are no beeps every 3 seconds, except if you decide to record a phone call (then I believe there's some kind of a legal requirement to sound the beep so that the other party knows they are being recorded).
If you want an app for dictating long texts, then such applications have been developed and are available for sale separately by software companies.

  • Player size question for player developers

    Question for all player developers:
    For media players that you've built or that you've seen out on the web today, how big are they in k?  And of that total size, how much code does it take to support each of the service integrations with CDNs, ad servers/networks, analytics services, and content management systems?
    I'm interested in total player size, the % of that total devoted to each type of service integration, and the average for an individual service integration.

  • A Question for Software Developers

    Is it that difficult to build into the software code of iWeb an ability to add HTML inside a text box so that the result is a textbox-constrained HTML widget?
    This way, two options for HTML would be available. One, the current widget option and, two, this text-box option. The latter of which would actually place the HTML inside the same page the text box is located as opposed to the former option which places it on a separate page.

    Is it that difficult to build into the software code of iWeb an ability to add HTML inside a text box so that the result is a textbox-constrained HTML widget?
    yes, it is difficult to do so because of the way iweb structures its elements in xml.
    you need to see in iweb xml to understand that it will take a huge revamp to accommodate that.
    The latter of which would actually place the HTML inside the same page the text box is located as opposed to the former option which places it on a separate page.
    this can be done but you need to have controls from inside iweb, this takes understanding of how iweb works so you can dynamically manipulate what is on the page.
    see my example here:
    http://www.cyclosaurus.com/Home/CyclosaurusBlog/Entries/2009/8/11Pieces_of3.html#7
    look at the page source and you won't see any code for drop-down menu nor CSS nor javascript.
    all the code is added to my example with my widgets.

  • Question about app developers

    I am curious about something. I bought an app last year called magic fiddle by smule. In order to play it, you have to sign up or sign in, or sign in as a guest. Well, I couldn't sign in so I wrote to the developers an they told me that they discontinued the app and thus turned off the network portion of the app so no one could ever use it again. In order to get to the game part of the app you need to sign in or play as a guest, but since they no longer support it you can't use the app. They even removed it from the app store. What I'm curious about is this. Is there a way we can complain or get an Apple or developer credit to buy something else or are we pretty much screwed as faithful supporters of all these apps on here whoever these developers decide to cancel an app and refuse to support it? I am really ticked off right now. I wouldn't care if the app were free, but I paid for this one.

    I know this is a Mac app store, and I know I need support for the iPad AppStore but I thought that the Mac app store was universal.

  • Question for App Developers

    I am thinking about learning how to develop apps for Android. If you're a developer, how did you learn to develop apps, and do you have any suggestions to get started? What hardware would I need to test apps with?

    Start at http://www.android.com/
    You'll find everything you need to know there (or on links from there).  Download the SDK, pay the $25 one-time fee (if you want to distribute via the Market), and have at it.
    It helps if you're  familiar with Java programming.

  • Mac Developers - IDE question

    A question for Mac developers - which ActionScript IDE do you prefer? I've loved FlashDevelop on the PC, but can't find the equivalent on the Mac which:
    is free
    has code completion
    The options I know about:
    TextMate - isn't free. People seem to love this which I don't understand coz it doesn't seem to have code completion...
    SE|PY - can't seem to get it to work on Snow Leopard, and I notice that the website doesn't seem to have been updated in four years, so I'm not holding my breath...
    Flash Builder - isn't free(although I'm looking into installing Eclipse with Flex SDK), and I always preferred FlashDevelop for elegance and speed as an AS IDE anyway.
    my next last resort option is to look into running windows on the mac...
    Any other options or comments on my comments?

    This is a weird choice, but jEdit (jedit.org) is actually quite an amazing little code editor. It is certainly not a full-fledged IDE but I have enjoyed years of PHP editing in it. It has JS code coloring and possibly completion buried somewhere in it--I've been editing my stand-alone AS scripts in it occasionally.
    If you do download it, be sure to download the BufferTabs and WhiteSpace plugins too. And look around--there's a ton of plugins available to improve the performance of it.
    EDIT: On second glance, maybe it isn't providing auto-completion. (Or just JS autocompletion via SideKick or some other plugin I have.)

  • Simple question - minimize application

    I have a simple question to nokia developers. Why I cannot minimize most of my applications in Nokia Asha 302? In Nokia E50 I could. Why are you going backwards in usefulness of your software?

    It is not going backward. Asha series is based on s40 OS while E-series on Symbian. s40 doesn't support multitasking while Symbian does.

  • Difficult interview question?

    Like many tech companies, my company has a lot of open positions and I'm involved in the interview process. My coworkers believe that one of the questions I ask is too difficult and that I'm being too hard on candidates, but I'm not sure that's the case. So I was hoping to run the question by experienced developers here to get more opinions.
    What I ask is basically to implement the following class:
    public class CompoundIterator<T> implements Iterator<T> {
        public CompoundIterator(Iterator<T>... items) {
    }The basic requirement is that it be able to coalesce multiple Iterators into a single Iterator. There are multiple ways of solving this (read all items into a List in the constructor and delegate the iterator() call, save the Iterators in the constructor and return an anonymous Iterator implementation, etc), so I'm not necessarily looking for a specific solution, though I'd prefer the candidate to ask questions about the desired behavior and pick the best implementation based on my answers. But what I'm finding is that people who claim to have 10+ years of experience developing Java are unable to even formulate clarifying questions, let alone come up with a solution.
    So...what do people think...is this an overly difficult question that will disqualify quality candidates or is Iterator important enough and the problem easy enough that any Java developer worth hiring should be able to, at a minimum, figure out some solution?

    In an average work day for the positions that you are interviewing for how often will they be dealing with code exactly like that?
    50% of the day - then yes you certainly want to ask about that.
    0.0001% of the day - then perhaps you should find something a bit more relevant to discuss.Obviously one cannot ask detailed questions about stuff "exactly like" what they'll be dealing with day to day, as what one deals with one day is not "exactly like" what one deals with the next day, or, if it is, the company has such horrendous management and process problems that it can't possibly survive for long. So one asks questions that are, at some level, representative of the kinds of problems one might have to solve on the job.
    Pretty sure that one can ask some more general questions that are still techical but which cover a much larger part of what a user might be doing over time than the question presented though.
    This particular question isn't as hard as the OP's coworkers apparently think it is, but it could be used as part of the overall measure of whether candidate fits into the "junior", "mid-level", or "senior" bucket--or into the "stop wasting my time" trash bin.
    Validation is of course simple.
    Put the co-workers, all of them, in a room with the question and a piece of paper. Give them 10/15 minutes to either solve it or write questions about it.
    Important to NOT do it verbally because
    1. It takes more time
    2. The interviewee is initially going into it without the a comfort of a co-worker
    3. Easier to analyze the results.
    If this is in fact a valid question and if in fact it is deemed necessary that such a test be given then taken the appropriate time to actually validate the question is appropriate.
    >
    Other than that I haven't seen a developer yet that was able to gauge ability from a technical interview. I've met several.And how did you measure their success rate? How many total employees did they hire in that you were either able to directly or with a suitable level of confidence, indirectly, able to judge the new hires as being compentent? What areas of expertise did these individuals interview for?
    >
    Not perfectly, of course. We've all recommended a couple for hire that turned out to be duds, but, despite what you seem to think, asking somebody technical questions can give one some insight into their technical ability. Shocking, I know.Are you claiming everyone will have that success rate? Or that say even 50% of developers have that skill?
    >
    So for myself I use the interview to assure myself that I am going to be able to work with them. I use very generic technical questions not as a gauge of ability but rather as a vehicle to at least get a sense of how this person might interact with me. And sometimes I have the rare pleasure of interviewing someone whose ability shines through all on its own. But that is rare (that ol' distribution curve you know) and I don't have the luxury of waiting years to fill positions I go with what I am given.That's all very well and good, but in the meantime, the OP has a specific question about a specific question, Which I addressed.
    and it's unlikely his employer is going to completely revamp their hiring process based on personal anecdotes related on an internet forum.Nothing at all suggests that has anything to do with it.
    Matter a fact since the poster has already stated that his co-workers are questioning the question then it might in fact be very relevant to the employer as to what exactly is going on in the interview sessions. And what should be going on.

  • PC Card not recognized - hardware or software issue?

    Hello All,
    this is my first post to this forum. I own a PowerBook G4 (late 2005) since February 2006, but still do consider myself being new to the world of Mac.
    Most questions in this forum get good and detailed answers. That's why I hope someone here can help me with some issue regarding my PowerBooks PC Card slot. Thanks in advance for reading this.
    I can't get some special PC Card to work. I'm not sure if it's an hardware or a software problem. For now, I guess it's an hardware issue with the PC Card slot. Regarding this, my Apple Service Provider told me, they will charge me a fee of 90 (Euro-)bucks, if their result of checking the PowerBook is, that the PC Card slot has no hardware damage and needs no repair. I'd like to have some more certainty before paying this for no reason.
    Some facts:
    * The PC Card is an Option GlobeTrotter HSPDA 7.2 READY DataCard
    * This data card proved to work well in a linksys WRT54G3G router
    * I installed a vendor specific driver/kernel extension/whatever that came with this card
    * When the data card is inserted, it seems to get power from the pc card slot, since some lights on it start to flash
    * At the same time a message occurs in system.log:
    'Unable to create cardbus nub for socket 0'
    * The card +does not+ appear in System Profiler
    Provided that a pc card slot works correctly: Does system profiler at least displays an entry in section 'PC Cards', even if a certain card is not supported?
    I'd like to ask you to tell me what you think. Please make a guess, if it's an hardware or a software issue, and let me know for what reason.
    Thank you!

    Hi eww,
    thank you, any help/hint/idea is appreciated, cause I ran out of ideas myself.
    I bought the card from a company called nova media: http://www.novamedia.de/epages/e_produkte_gt_hsdpamac.html. Novamedia develops drivers and connectivity software for those data cards by Option, and sell them bundeled with hardware. So I'm pretty sure this card basically works on PowerBooks. Their support answered several of my questions, and even developers got involved, but at the end they couldn't say for sure if it's their drivers or my PowerBooks fault. They never had this kind of error before.
    Entry 'PCI Cards' in System Profiler shows 5 devices, no matter if the card is inserted or not:
    Entry 1 ... is a network controller
    Entry 2 ... Card: TXN,PCIXXXX-00, Type: cardbus, Bus: PCI, Slot: PC Card
    Entry 3-5 ... USB20 devices
    I had a look at the darwin source code (http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/tarballs/apsl/IOPCCardFamily-45.tar .gz) for the cardbus stuff and even found the log statement, but beyond that, got no clue from it. Unfortunately I'm neither a C programmer nor a device driver expert.
    I guess, the best thing is to bring the PowerBook to my Apple Service Provider now. I'll leave a message here in 1 or 2 weeks what the results were. Currently I need my PowerBook very bad and can't do without it for several days.

  • End Of communication Error while executing java procedure (Urgent)

    Hi All,
    I am using oracle 10g on linux server. Client machine is on xp. I hava a java procedure which executes the sqlldr on server. Earlier it was working fine, but after reinstalling the oracle 10g on server. It started giving "end of Communication channel error". I am not aware that what paramete has to set. Can some body put light on this error.
    Bye
    Sachin

    This is the most frequently asked question from Oracle developers.. Never mind putting some light on this error, I want to put it alight! ;-)
    First thing. It is not The Error. It is a sympton of an error.
    This message does not come from the database. It comes from the client OCI (of JDBC) drivers - which suddenly discovered that the Oracle connection (usually a TCP socket connection) has been torn down at the server side. It attempts to write to that socket, only to find that the other party has hung up.
    Why has the other party hung up? That party is either a Dedicated Server Process or a Dispatcher Process. If a dedicated server dies (crashes), it will take its socket handles with it to The Great Recycle Bin In The Sky. If you was serviced by a shared server and it died, the Dispatcher (who handles the TCP comms for it), will automatically close that shared server's connection.
    Usually when a process dies on the Oracle server, it leaves behind an error in the alert log, and trace files. That is where you will find the inklings of what The Error was that caused your client to get the EOF on comms channel message.

    Eclipse also seems to create the following directory which is mentioned in one of the above configs, so I've manually added this directory to the root of IrisApp project: /.apt_src. It's empty.
    I noticed that Eclipse created several directories once the project in cleaned (I guess, as those directories were not in svn when I get my copy): WebContent with some -INF subdirectories and metafiles in them. So I just removed this structure.
    As for WebLogic.jar in my classpath you mentioned, I need that for the project to compile, there are some HttpServletRequest's etc.
    I've also added WLS 9.2 'Targeted Runtime' to IrisApp which seemed to have created an additional directory in the workspace with the following structure and contents:
    1. .project file
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <projectDescription>

    2. BEA WebLogic Server v9.2 at localhost.server file
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <server IGNORE_COMPILER_ERRORS="false" auto-publish-setting="2" auto-publish-time="15" hostname="localhost" id="BEA WebLogic Server v9.2 at localhost" name="BEA WebLogic Server v9.2 at localhost" runtime-id="BEA WebLogic Server v9.2" server-type="com.bea.wlw.server92" server-type-id="com.bea.wlw.server92" start-timeout="3480" stop-timeout="240" timestamp="22" weblogic_domain_path="C:\CDE\user_projects\domains\MyDomain" weblogic_host_name="localhost" weblogic_is_remote="false" weblogic_port="7001" weblogic_use_bootprop="true" weblogic_use_config_xml="true">

    3. .settings directory
    with the following file in it:
    3a. org.eclipse.wst.server.core.prefs file:
    #Mon Sep 14 12:45:04 EDT 2009
    org.eclipse.wst.server.core.isServerProject=true
    eclipse.preferences.version=1
    So, with the above setup, I'm now trying to deploy it to WLS and getting the following exception:

    I can see spring.jar on my classpath so I'm not sure what it's complaining about.
    The team hear is using MyEclipse with all the configurations cheched into Subversion but there's no more licenses so I need to configure Eclipse to achieve the same task. It would help if you could point me to some documentation as to what's happenning internally as I'm sure I'll get lots of questions from other developers later once it's all configured. Please let me know if I need to share any additional info for you to be able to help.
    Could you please point me in the right direction?
    Thank you very much!

  • How to find out if a mirror is synced ?

    With the recent big updates i have been looking for a way to determine if the mirrors i use for updating are in sync.
    For the last update i manually activated ftp.archlinux.org in pacman.conf, did a pacman -Syu , answering NO then switched to another console.
    There i deactivated ftp.archlinux.org in pacman.conf and ran pacman -Syu against my usual mirrors, then comapred the outputs.
    The 3rd one i tried (belnet.be) was in sync.
    I think pacman uses some kind of database for the repo contents, and comparing the db-files from ftp.archlinux.org with the db files of a mirror should be a possible solution to have pacman check if the mirror is in sync.
    Where can i submit a suggestion to add this as a new sync option to pacman ?

    Hi,
    I would suggest you post this question in the developers forums in SDN.
    I know we have some unfortunate confusion with Business Objects the company name which SAP purchased and the "business objects" within the SAP business suite programming model.
