Question to new MacBook owners

I've just got a MB and checking its Application/utilities folder I find the following files:
iMac firmware updater
iMac SMC firmware update
I just find it strange that it would say iMac when it's MB. And I only get error messages when I try to run them. Does your MB also have these files as iMac and not MB firmware updater?

thanks bunch! I guess somehow they got loaded on mine - no idea how. i haven't having problems trying to complete boot camp on my MB, it won't accept the Mac drivers software that was made by my MB. Hope this will resolve.

I am a long time iTunes user but a new MacBook owner! I keep the majority of my music files on an external hard drive.   I'm trying to view all those files on my MacBook through iTunes.   With windows you would go to : File/Add To Library, and iTunes would add all your selected files to your music library BUT WOULD NOT COPY THEM TO YOUR HARD DRIVE.  In other words, if the external hard drive was connected, you could listen, drag/drop, and edit the files.   When I tried the same thing with my new MacBook... it actually started coping the files to my MacBook harddrive.  I don't want that, it's millions and millions of mp3's that I don't want to keep on my computer, only my external hard drive.   Can anyone help?    I'm sure it's something easy, I'm just so new to the Mac world.   Being an iPhone owner for many many years I'm picking up things fast, but this is getting the best of me!  Help !

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • Severley starting to question the new MacBooks

    Hi,
I bought a new MacBook Early this Month, and loved it straight away. Then I had this issue where the grey material level with the keyboard was seperating from the white base, so I went back to apple and they promptly replaced my MacBook. SO now I've had this new one for maybe 4 days when I notice the other night that it was teetering on two of it's little legs.
So I immediately questioned the level of the floor and ran to my kitchen counter, where it still teetered. So I querstioned the level of that surface and decided to try it once more at work where I know my desk it level. And I found that it was indeed a little warped, but as the computer ran for a while the warp incresed. And then after you shut it off and it had time to cool the warp decreased but not to the point where it was gone completely. SO I'm going back to apple.
But I really do love this computer, I just want to have a good one, i.e one that's not falling apart, or becoming disfigured due to heat or use. So my plan is to wait until a day before the 14 day grace period is up and swap it out again and hope I good one this time. And repeat the process every 13 days untill I get a good one.
I guess I basically need a Apple Faith Boost from all of my fellow mac users. Been loyal to apple for 3 years now, but I'm really losing faith because of this.

I've been a loyal Mac user for almost twenty years (back when they really were overpriced, underpowered, but still WAY cool), and my new MacBook is the only Mac I've ever had where I've had problems from the outset.
It happens. I've owned a lot of Macs over the years, and this is my first problem computer. Frustrating? Heck yeah, but that's still life.
Your plans sounds like a good one, if not a bit frustrating. I'd be surprised if you got another bum machine, but it does happen. I've already had my top case replaced, and the logic board gets replaced tomorrow. Apple gets high marks for customer service for a reason. Sometimes they need a nudge (or a forceful push), but compared to most companies, they come through more often that not.
Hang in there. You're not alone

  • New MacBook owner but would like to do a ram upgrade

hello all. I'm a new mac user and love it. I got my new MacBook on the leopard debut date. Anyways I just wanted to know where I would go about getting a better ram card for my new laptop rather then the 1 gb one I have now. Another question I have is seeing that I already have a 1gb card already installed can I go ahead and buy a 2 gb card and put it in the empty slot to run both. That way I'm running 3 gb or would that not work. Also can someone give me a good place or a good website to guy it from thanx

If you add a 2 GB stick you will have 2.5 GB of RAM which is OK to run with. That way later on you can buy another 2 GB stick and bring it up to 4 GB. All MacBooks come from the factory with two sticks installed.

  • Several unrelated questions about new MacBook

This is probably bad form, but I thought I'd try to get several newbie questions answered at once.
    1) Screen on my new Macbook 2.16 core 2 Duo seems overly bright and almost washed out. I changed the gamma to 2.2 in the DIsplays panel and that helps considerably--is there any downside to running like this?
    2) I have heard "glossy" screen mentioned a lot, and mine said it was a "glossy" screen, but isn't just the standard screen, or are there alternative screens for the Macbook?
    3) How do I find the build date for this Macbook?
    4) I wonder if there's an easy way to get my Win XP installation on Bootcamp on my iMac into a Parallels or VMWare VM on this Macbook?
    5) I read that one small advantage of the newer Macbooks is that they have a revised and improved (and slightly smaller) power supply block. Mine looks **** the same as a friend's Macbook Core Duo -- is there some way to check for the current power supply? Machine may have been in Amazon stock for a while for all I know.
    6. Doesn't this new Macbook have wireless n? Would there be a significant increase in speed were I to get a new wireless n-capable router/modem (right now I've got a wireless G)?
I'm sure I have another half-dozen, but I'll practice retraint and hope nobody minds my ganging up on you.
    Cheers--

    Hi Pier,
    1) Screen on my new Macbook 2.16 core 2 Duo seems overly bright and almost washed out. I changed the gamma to 2.2 in the DIsplays panel and that helps considerably--is there any downside to running like this?
None that I can think of. Obviously, if you are doing professional image manipulation then you could calibrate the screen, preferably with professional calibrating tools.
    2) I have heard "glossy" screen mentioned a lot, and mine said it was a "glossy" screen, but isn't just the standard screen, or are there alternative screens for the Macbook?
The standard screen is matte with glossy available as a free option.
    3) How do I find the build date for this Macbook?
Look at the serial number and specifically the first 4 digits. Mine is W8717XXXXXX. This tells me that my build date is week 17.
    4) I wonder if there's an easy way to get my Win XP installation on Bootcamp on my iMac into a Parallels or VMWare VM on this Macbook?
The only way is if you have the original Win XP CD. Installation of software on to another computer is, of course, subject to the licensing terms - EULA
    5) I read that one small advantage of the newer Macbooks is that they have a revised and improved (and slightly smaller) power supply block. Mine looks ** the same as a friend's Macbook Core Duo -- is there some way to check for the current power supply? Machine may have been in Amazon stock for a while for all I know.
Sorry, don't know but you could pop down to an Apple retail store or dealer and compare the newer power adapters with your one.
    6. Doesn't this new Macbook have wireless n? Would there be a significant increase in speed were I to get a new wireless n-capable router/modem (right now I've got a wireless G)?
802.11n can be enabled for free if you have purchased the new Airport Extreme Base Station. Alternatively, if you wish to enable 802.11n but have a third party wireless router you can purchase the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler for Mac from the online store - it's only $1.99.
The following Apple KB document will guide you on how to check if 802.11n is enabled on your MBP:

  • New macbook owner need insight on downloading a word document?

I just got a new macbook for college.. never had one before and im use to hp with windows..now, is there a program like Microsoft Word i need to download?? to write word documents and stuff?

    Download?
If you mean how to read/edit/use WORD documents on your Mac....your University should be able to sell you MS  Office, or you can buy/download from Amazon.
You can also use NeoOffice (Google is your friend), or switch to Pages, the Apple solution.

  • Potential new MacBook owner

    Hello All,
I'm an IPhone fan and I'm tired of problems with my Dell XPS desktop and laptop. I want to switch to just a MacBook. I'm pretty good with Windows type of computers, but sooo tired of the complexity of software and problems that seem to just arise. My real question is how easy is it going to be to move over all of my photos that I have (using Kodak Easyshare software) and all of my music from iTunes from my desktop. I really only use my old computers to just read on the internet, get email, and manage my photos and music, so I really just want to buy a basic MacBook. Should I just go for the base model or upgrade to a more expensive one. I really want to get Time Capsule, also. Another fear of mine is compatibility with the wireless and my Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii working easily over this wireless network. I know I'm probably being overly fearful, but I would just like some input from some people on here before I make a final decision.
    Thanks a lot,
    Terry

I'll try to help ya out, only area I'm foggy on is transferring music from comp to comp if it's itunes music...
    1. You will most likely enjoy the simplicity of OSX and the great software it comes with in the iLife bundle. OSX is much more worry free, especially if your currently using a Vista computer. However, the difference between windows and OSX is not too much that it would be frustrating or discouraging.
    2. Moving your photos will take some sort of extra harddrive of flashdrive; depending on how many gig's worth of photos you have. Photo filetypes won't be an issue, you'll just end up using iPhoto instead of the kodak easyshare. Also, you most likely wont need to install any software needed to have your camera sync up with the mac. Those 3rd party softwares just muddle up a good computer anyway.
    3. As far as I know for the iTunes, dont you just authorize your new computer with the iPhone/iPod and then move your library onto it?
    4. Just stick with the base macbook and upgrade the harddrive if you want maximum storage onboard. If you plan on buying and external harddrive to store your stuff, then the base specs should be fine.
    5. The wireless won't conflict with those other wireless devices. They will all feed off of the same wireless source: i.e. your wireless router or wireless modem.
If any of this was unclear please let me know. Hope it helps.

  • Questions about New Macbook Pro

    1.  I've heard this system gets hot, but is it only when gaming?  I'll mostly be using this for web/chat and photo editing but am wondering if my legs would start to get warm or sweat by using it in say bed.
1a.  Can you keep the machine on your lap while playing games like World of Warcraft?
1b.  Do only parts of the laptop get hot, keeping where you place your hand or more importanly wrist(left 'awsd' keys) cool?
    2.  How much battery life do you get on average watching a movie(iTunes download or dvd) or just chatting/web?
    3. I'd like to say money doesn't matter in this purchase but it does have an effect.  Which are smart upgrades and which are things to stay away from?
         3a.  2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 or 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
3b. 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm or 128GB Solid State Drive (Yes, I have read about a lot of the current SSD drives failing)
3c. MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display  or MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
    4.  Is it smarter to buy Office and other products with the purchase of this Mac or can they be found for the same/lower price after it arrives?
    5.  Do most get the AppleCare Protection Plan?  And if you have used it how good is the service?
    6.  Parallels or VMware Fusion?
Sorry for all the questions and/or the long read..  I've done a good bit of looking around for a new laptop and this one keeps popping up as a good choice.  If it wasn't for the machine getting hot I might have already bought it.
Thanks in advance for all of your help!
    Dan

AppleCare is NOT insurance.  Insurance implies coverage with user accidents.  AppleCare does not give this kind of insurance.  It does give you warranty, which means any manufacturer defects it can detect that are not obviously usage, wear and tear.  In addition, it gives you unlimited support for one flat fee for both Apple software issues and hardware issues related to the machine it is bought for.  What this sort of support includes, is diagnosing any issues which may arise with the machine, and repairing any that are manufacturer defects.  Other repairs will be at cost.
    To answer your other questions:
    2.  How much battery life do you get on average watching a movie(iTunes download or dvd) or just chatting/web?
Movies, the maximum is probably around 2 hours on DVD, 3 to 4 hours from iTunes. The difference is that the DVD requires constant read from the optical drive, and decoding of the movie.  With iTunes it is just the decoding.
    3. Solid state drives are still in their infancy, and current documentation says that sensitive information should not be put on them.  The problem is that there is no way to 100% erase the data on them.  Antiglare screens are really the only way to do photography and capture the real color of what you are photographing.  Yes, the glossy gives you truer blacks, but the glare you get offsets that benefit if there is anything beyond ambient light in the room.
    4. Office is the same price either way.  You get a demo version of Office when you buy your Mac.  But unless you have a pressing need for 100% compatibility of Office documents, and can deal with the occasional hiccup (I've had none), http://www.neooffice.org/ can handle Excel, Powerpoint, and Word documents without issue.  If you find you can't get what you need from that, then invest in Office.  But at least give Neo Office, and http://docs.google.com/ a change before jumping into more costly versions of Office applications.

  • New Macbook owner

After waiting for the Core 2 Duo to come to the Macbook I finally bought one yesterday and I have to say, this computer is amazing. It takes some time getting used to the Apple Os since I previously used Windows all my life. But now Im getting to the point (only the second day) where Im starting to need the old files on my old computer that ran Windows Xp Pro. So I have a couple questions (some just on how to use the Mac OS)
    1. I would like to ask anyone if there is any easy way to transfer all my files. I really just have one folder that I need to move over but that folder has atleast 4 gigabytes in it (music, etc). So is there a way to just transfer all my files easily without having to buy an external hard drive for example. The most important thing I need from my old computer is my music in my iTunes library, i heard theres a way to use my iPod Mini to transfer but I have no idea how to.
    2. For some reason in firefox all the videos and music player on myspace don show up. Is it because im missing a certain plug-in?
    3. Also related to that, in safari certain myspaces are so laggy to scroll around in that I refuse to use that browser anymore, is it a problem with something I need to do?
I really love this computer and you must imagine the fun I have defending Macs in my family since everyone else uses Windows. But Apple is amazing. I have only found minute issues with the computer (really just the ones listed above) but it probablly is just an error on my part. If theres anyone that can aid me in these problems I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you

Transferring the data using your iPod sounds like the way to go. Let's assume for the moment that all the music you own is already on your iPod. (If this isn't true it only changes the story a little bit.) Connect your iPod to the Mac and when you are told the iPod is synced to another computer and asks if you'd like to sync it to the Mac, select Cancel.
Go to your favorite Mac download site and search for iPod. You'll find several programs that let you copy the music on your iPod to the Mac. Download one and use it. If this is all your music great, if not, disconnect it, move it to your PC, and switch out the music on your iPod putting more of your collection on. Return to your Mac and copy. Keep this up until all the music has been transferred.
Connect the iPod to your PC again and erase the music from your iPod. (The easiest way is to create a playlist and put no music in it. Then set your iPod to sync selected playlists and select only the empty playlist.) With iTunes still running, look at the iPod preferences, and select "Enable disk use" or "Manually manage songs and playlists". Either one will allow you to use iPod as a drive.
The iPod should appear under "My Computer" and when you double click on the icon it should then look just like a hard drive. Copy your data files to it. When it is full, or you have copied everything, dismount the drive (don't just unplug it!) and connect it to your Mac. Its icon will appear on the desktop. Open it, drag the data to your folder(s).
Yes you are probably missing a couple plug-ins - Real and Flash. Go to their respective websites and download them. You will also need to get an updated WMV plug-in. Go to Microsoft's Mac website and get it - not WMV actually. Microsoft has chosen to drop WMV support and has licensed Flip4Mac to provide us with WMV support.
I cannot complain about Safari being slow perhaps your issue is RAM? Do you have 1GB or more? 512 is fairly meagre.

  • Proud new MacBook owner

Well, I took the plunge today and bought my first Mac at the Apple store in my area. I've been trying to find a good notebook for school use and since you can now put Windows XP (For school program use) on a Mac I decided on the MacBook even though there is a current RSD scare.
First let me say, I could not be happier with the exception of 1 dead pixel almost in the dead center of the screen. I've tried massaging it out which has worked in the past for me but it didn't work. It is stuck as a black pixel so it's not too bad unless I have a white screen up. I get giddy with cool gadets so when I saw iAlertU and MacSaber I was like COOL! I'm quickly finding myself using my Windows PC for gaming and wanting some of the features on OS X. But, as a noob Mac user I do have a couple of quick questions:
1.) Is there a way to remove the white boarder around the dock so the icons sit alone down there.
2.) I have a 60GB HD but it only says I have 38gigs open. I know Apple has a ton of stuff on there I will never use so what is the best way to free up some space.

    1) Clear Dock takes the white tape from around the dock and allows you to set the color of the little triangles that indicate when a program is empty. You can find it (and lots of other good freeware) at macupdate.com or versiontracker.com. While you're there, take a look at QuickSilver and VirtueDesktops. I don't know how I lived without them before!
    2) Lots of people recommend removing garageband, iDVD, and languages you don't use as a way to clear up a lot of disk space. But it seems that removing languages in particular can be tricky (you use another free app called Monolingual) and I would search these boards for the threads on this issue before you do it.
    Hope that helps!

  • 2 questions from new mac owner

    Hello all,
I've found some good information on these forums and there seems to be a good community here, I'm glad I finally bought a mac. I have two questions:
1- When I copied many digital photographs from dvd's to my hard drive, all of the directories and files are read only. How do I change permissions to many files at once? Right now I am using 'get info' and changing pulldown to read & write. There has to be an easier way.
2- I use photoshop, dreramweaver, flashpro, blender, etc. Since these are demanding graphics programs, what should I do on a regular basis to keep things running at the best possible speed. I've read about setting up a few things to do automatically each month, but haven't found details. I'm an EX-windows user so I'm used to having to defrag, and do reinstalls from time to time, etc. Thank you and hello everybody.

You can use "Get Info" on the enclosing folder and change the permissions on the folder and all enclosed items in one shot. With the "Get Info" panel open, click the little disclosure triangle next to "Details" under "Ownership & Permissions". Select the desired permissions and then click the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.

    hello everybody.
The only thing you normally have to worry about is keeping a few GB of free space on the boot volume for swap files, etc. Mac OS X maintains its filesystems in such a way as to minimize fragmentation, so defragging is not normally needed.

  • Basic questions from new iMac owner

What exactly should I buy for Time Machine backups (I have 27 inch iMac with 8 gb memory).  Also can I migrate data directly to my iMac from my Dell All-in-One, including Itunes music library?  What type of connector best to use?

You should buy an external disk that uses the usb3 interface (assuming your iMac is new).  Use the disk first with your Dell.  Format it as NTFS if required, put your itunes folder on it, put your documents folder on it, put your pictures folder on it, .....basically get your stuff on the drive.
Move the disk to the mac.  Now, copy the iTunes folder in the Music folder.  Place everything inside the documents folder inside the iMac's documents folder, put the pictures folder inside your iMac's pictures folder, ...basically move your stuff to the appropreiate iMac folder.
Now start up iTunes and it will see the old library and all will be fine.  If any of your album, apps, movie artwork looks weird, simply close iTunes go into the cache folder inside the iTunes folder and delete the old cache files. Restart iTunes and the artwork will look OK.
You can also open iPhoto and import all the photos from your old picture folder.
Finally when you are happy that all your stuff is in the right place.  Reformat the drive as hfs journaled, name the drive Backup, and point time machine to it from system preferences.  You can format the drive using disk utilitiy which is inside your applications/utility folder.
It's really not that hard to convert.  Don't worry about applications you had on the Dell.  They won't work.  You just need your data files.  Data is data so all will be well.
    Good luck

  • Question from new iPad owner

Just a quick question - just bought a white iPad 2 wifi, I notice on the corners there is a small hair thin opening between the screen and the aluminum. Am I being paranoid / OCD or is this normal?  Thanks

I see a similar small difference between the formed aluminum and glass on mine. I've worked it pretty hard for a couple of months with no ill effects and no apparent change in the gap.
the iPad isn't waterproof anyway, so I'm confident that there is no issue with mine. I should also add mine is one of 10 I set up for my company and all were quite similar.
    Hope that helps.
