Question to SNMP

Folks,
I'm having some issues with the MIB sysName.
Normally with this MIB I will get the FQDN like ""router1.domain.com"" if I have configured the "hostname" with router1 and the "ip domain name" with domain.com.
If I remove the "ip domain name" statement from the config I expect a sysName without the domain like ""router1"" (in this example).
This work pretty well with 98% of my CEs but not for some connected through an internet based circuit.
At this CEs I get back a FQDN like ""router1.kornet"" or ""router1.no-domain-set.bellcanada""  ... so it looks that the ISP add something .. question is now to to eliminate this?!
any idea?
thx
Uwe

Hi,
I am very new to SNMP protocol.. Sorry for asking dumb question..
I am trying to execute weblogic examples.. What should i give the OID value? Is it configarable? If so how to add my own object or key/value pair to MIB?
Started the server successfully using following command..
java weblogic.SNMPAgent -serverURLs t3://localhost:7001 -password weblogic123
When i tried to execute the following commands (given in http://www.weblogic.com/docs51/admindocs/snmpapplications.html)
java snmpget localhost .1.3.6.1.4.1.140.600.20.1.10.10.115.116.97.110.100.97.108.111.110.101.8.109.121.115.101.114.118.101.114
OR
java snmpwalk localhost .1.3.6.1.4.1.140.600.20
do you get any errors in the server logfile ?
Also, about your other question: the current agent cannot be extended to support addditional metrics. However it can co-exist with other SNMP agents running on the same machine which may support custom defined metrics.

  • Question on SNMP Read-Write String ...

    Hi,
My question is that if I am using an SNMP read-write community string on the device, would Prime LMS still require
the logging credentials of the device via ie) telnet/ssh ?
The reason how I undertand this as long as the SNMP manager (Prime LMS) and the agent (end device) have the same read-write community,
couldn't the Prime LMS just write to the device without the standard logging credentials ? or is the logging credential of the device is a must for it
to push configuration to the device ?
    Pls advise.
    Many thanks.
    Cheers,
    - sn -

Even though the SNMP communication is there between device and LMS, it is not possible to configure any device using SNMP, except for the RW variable and OIDs, which are limited in their scope.
It is not possible to configure, but to copy configuration to or from device using SNMP. See the following document to check further:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080094aa6.shtml
Many people use this manual process to copy configuration from device using SNMP, edit it and copy back to device to make configuration changes, but ideally no NMS server does it and LMS is no exception.
It uses transport Layer protocols like telnet/ssh to communicate with device like a normal user to configure commands, which in this case is done by Netconfig job.

  • SNMP v3 question - getting snmp user info

I just started a company that is using SNMP v3.  Problem is that the person before me didnt document some things.  Using the sh snmp user command, I was able to see the snmp v3 account that the switch will accept inquiries from but I dont see a way to display the password for the account.  Is there a way to see the password ?
    Ron

Yes that does. Unfortunately, that didnt show me the snmp v3 user account that I was needed.  Ended up calling the support folks for the NMS system that we use and they were able to help extract that info from their system.

  • SNMP Requests from Solaris

Hi, I am new to Solaris and have some questions about SNMP.
Does Solaris (9,10) include any binaries that allow you to make SNMP request to external equipment such as routers or other SNMP hardware?
I am considering the possibility of using a shell script to pull SNMP data from network elements, save it to a text file and render it to a web page.
Does that sound about right? I figured if binaries exist for this than it should be doable.
    Thanks

  • Snmp oids for the command "show counters interface intx/y delta"

    Hello,
I have a question about SNMP OIDs for the command "show counters interface intx/y delta" on Catalyst6500. The customer wants to create graphs for the following values:Overruns, qos0Outlost, InErrors, OutErrors, InDiscards, OutDiscards etc..
Is possible to get these values using SNMP??
    Thank you
    Roman

Thank you, Dan. These OIDs are for the output from the command "show interface int x/y". But I think, that these OIDs are not for the command "show interface int x/y delta".

  • How to install SNMP ?

    Hello,
I have a v120 server installed with the minimum installation of solaris 10 06/06.
I successfully installed a lot of package from sunfreeware.com, but now I need to install snmp to generate graphs from cacti.
My solaris knowledge is very limited, and I can't find a doc to to that.
Please, could you tell me how to :
    1. Know the required packages to run snmp deamon ? (names?? on the dvd?)
    2. The command to install them ?
Then I suppose that there is a cummunity account or I'll add it in snmp.conf....
Thanks you for your help, bigadmins :) !

  • SNMP - Turning it off, expierencing delay in printing on Toshiba printers

Greetings,I have got a question about SNMP. I have shut off SNMP on all our Toshiba printers. We print from a print server and I have turned it off on the server and the printer. I am quite sure it is off because I have done port scans and they do not respond to sent SNMP packets, which is good. The printers print, but the printing is delayed. When I turn SNMP back on the printers, the delay is gone. We are running Windows 7 in conjunction with a Citrix reciever. I am not sure why SNMP has anything to do with the speed of the printers, and if it does is there a work around. I have also shut SNMP off on the drivers. I have tried adjusting the speed of the printers as well. When turning on SNMP, it may be worthy to note, that it is V1 or V2. I have also tried SNMP V3 on the printer only, and that also causes a delay. We are a running...

That doesn't appear to be a US model, and this is the forums for Toshiba USA. You may want to contact Toshiba in your region.

  • E3200 and SNMP

Before I purchased the E3200 yesterday, I contacted Cisco Sales support and asked specific question about SNMP support on E3200. I was told that E3200 does supports SNMP.. However, I do not find any setup / nor any documentation on how to. Does anyone know If E3200 supports SNMP? I would like to monitor my router using SNMP traps..
    Thanks in advance..

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an "Internet-standard protocol for managing devices on IP networks. Devices that typically support SNMP include routers, switches, servers, workstations, printers, modem racks, and more.” It is used mostly in network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. SNMP is a component of the Internet Protocol Suite as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It consists of a set of standards for network management, including an application layer protocol, a database schema, and a set of data objects.
So on that basis you can refer to a link whether it works better or not...

  • *** Conflicting device support info for DFM 3.2 ***

    Hellows...   ;-)
The helpful folks at TAC have been trying to troubleshoot one of my last and biggest pending items, which was the perceived inability of DFM to manage the devices on our network.  This was a rather puzzling issue, as the other LMS components (CS, CM, RME, etc.) had no apparent issues whatsoever doing everything I asked them to do.  After countless hours trying to troubleshoot DFM discovery errors ("questioned" with SNMP timeout despite the fact that all other LMS modules manage the same devices perfectly fine), an alert TAC engineer finally asked whether or not these devices were, in fact actually supported by DFM 3.2 - low and behold, a can of worms opened up!
The best current guess is rather confusing to me:  There is a Cisco document out there suggesting that NONE of our devices are among those supported by DFM, while I did find another Cisco document that somewhat contradicts that notion.  I’d like to think that this must be confusing (or at least very little known) to TAC as well, since nobody over there considered this a potential culprit for the first almost three weeks of troubleshooting around the globe during countless WebEx sessions.  We basically went through everything imaginable (process monitoring with full debugging, complete removal and new installation of DFM only, complete clean-up and re-initialization of all module databases – and in the process tearing down most of my configurations and settings –, to a midnight conference call with developers in India).
The end result appears to be that DFM functionality will not be available to me – please confirm.  What are the alternatives?  Any rhyme or reason to Cisco not supporting these device types?  Any plans to ever do so?
I run a variety of devices on my network, most of them being 3560G, 3560E and 6504E switches, pretty much bread-and-butter variety of basic Cisco devices.  Why on earth would there even be a question that these are or are not supported by all LMS modules?
Argument AGAINST support in DFM 3.2:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/3.2/device_support/table/lms32sdt.html#3.2table
Argument IN FAVOR of support in DFM 3.2:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_device_fault_manager/3.2/device_support/table/dfm3_2os.html
According to that list, our 6504E with IOS is fully supported by DFM 3.2 with LMS 3.2, and so are the 3560G and 2950 series switches, the 2500 series router.  However, the 3560E series switches are not listed as supported.
Are we seeing ghosts here or have other people had device support issues with DFM?
    Thanks,
    Matthias

Okay.  I have a feeling the DFM Servers may be in a bad state.  If you haven't done so already, install the consolidated patch for CSCtb87449 from http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/go/ImageList.x?relVer=3.2.0&mdfid=282640771&sftType=CiscoWorks+Device+Fault+Manager+Patches&optPlat=Windows&nodecount=2&edesignator=null&modelName=CiscoWorks+Device+Fault+Manager+3.2&treeMdfId=268439477&treeName=Network+Management&modifmdfid=&imname=&hybrid=Y&imst=N&lr=Y .  Then REBOOT the server.
When the server comes back, try to rediscover your devices.  If that fails, post the DFM.log and DFM1.log under NMSROOT/objects/smarts/local/logs.

  • PI2.1:invalid cli credentials for password only login devices

    Hi,
We've got in trouble with a LMS to PI Migration maybe because the target devices are configured for Telnet
with a password only Login in place of the the common username Password Login Dialog in this Network.
LMS seams to can handle a Password only Login CLI Dialog with all of the devices but Prime Infrastructure claims "invalid cli credentials" for most devices but it seams to work with a lower part of the devices.
What can we do that PI can handle CLI login with Password only Dialog for all devices? Customer dont want to reconfiger the Network devices for username Password Login.
    Steffen

    Hi Afroy,
Thx for your reply. Its not a question of wrong credentials. I tested exevry thing from ade+ commandline. I used a converted csv-export from LMS (where all devices was working). The problem is PI only related:
    all devices in question are:
    - SNMP reachable, because green check mark in device work center, but name and type is empty despite SNMP discovered infos and OID + name is written into the discovery=>reachable log if I try to discover this devices
    - unmanaged, because claiming "wrong cli credential"
    - ifm_inventory.log has some following dissent for all this devices:
    postCollection() ... Cache status: false.
Error logging - Device <ip> Updated Successfully
delete and re-add this devices brings no improvement.

  • How to fetch network utilization...

I am doing a project related to network monitoring
so i need to know the the utilization of network
    resource,
we can say the incoming and outgoing traffic of a
particular network interface card, or the percentage
utilization of the capablity of that network card..
Is there any API related to that..so i can use that...
    i shall be really thankfull

If the devices in question have SNMP agents running, you could find an SNMP library and query the appropriate OIDs.
Whatever approach you take will involve a fair amount of research and work. There's no getUtilization(host, interface) method in the core API. You might be able to find a 3rd party library, but that would defeat the purpose of your homework.

  • Questions on Receiving SNMP Traps

    Hi:
    - I have more questions on receiving SNMP traps:
    1) the OEM plug-in can receive traps now, but when I click the metric, I see:
Error getting data for target test20. Exception: ORA-20216: ORA-06512: at "SYSMAN.EMD_MNTR", line 817 ORA-01403: no data found ORA-06512: at line 1
    - the push descriptor looks like:
    <PushDescriptor RECVLET_ID="SNMPTrap">
    <Property NAME="MatchEnterprise" SCOPE="GLOBAL">...</Property>
    <Property NAME="MatchGenericTrap" SCOPE="GLOBAL">6</Property> <Property NAME="MatchSpecificTrap" SCOPE="GLOBAL">31</Property> <Property NAME="MatchAgentAddr" SCOPE="INSTANCE">target_ip</Property>
    <Property NAME="EventsnChasFanIndexOID" SCOPE="GLOBAL">...</Property>
    <Property NAME="ContextsnChasFanDescriptionOID" SCOPE="GLOBAL">...</Property>
    <Property NAME="SeverityCode" SCOPE="GLOBAL">WARNING</Property>
    </PushDescriptor>
    - is the Key Property needed ?
    2) The alerts for some reason do not filter back to the all targets home page.
    - When I click the Home tab and goto to the 'All Targets' pane, I do not see the alert generated by the OEM plug-in.
    - What I am doing wrong ?
    3) Is it okay to receive traps with the metric usage set to either: HIDDEN or HIDDEN_COLLECT ?
    - Does this cause the errors I see in Q 1) ?
    Thanks
    John

    Hi John,
Can you post the full definition of the metric? You would need to use the Key property for each key column in the metric description.
With the SNMP receivelet you can set up definitons for data points or alerts. I would assume (as I've never tried this ;) that if you set up the definition to be a data point, you would see data from the All Metrics page. To me, it wouldn't make sense for a metric that used the PushDescriptor SNMPTrap to have data to be viewed as the result of the SNMP trap coming is would be an alert. I will have to look into that. My gut reaction is that a metric with PushDescriptor SNMPTrap shouldn't even appear on the All Metrics page ...
To be clear are you saying that you don't see the Warning number under "All Targets Alerts" increase by 1 when you SNMP trap is caught and alert is generated? When this occurs do you see the alert on the target instance homepage?
In regards to HIDDEN and HIDDEN_COLLECT, I don't know what effect they would have on a metric defined for an SNMP trap to raise an alert. You definitely wouldn't want to use HIDDEN as this setting is for temporary metrics that are used in the caclulation of other metrics. HIDDEN metrics are not collected (or hence uploaded to the OMS) and don't appear in the UI. HIDDEN_COLLECT are collected, but do not show up in the UI and are not uploaded. I've never used this settings with SNMP trap metrics that are for alerts. If your metrics for the SNMP trap alerts do show up on the All Metrics page (I'd have to get something set up to look at this), then it could make sense to use the HIDDEN_COLLECT as the alert would still be generated, but the metric itself wouldn't be shown in the UI.
Let me find out the expected behavior from someone on the agent team.
    Dave
