Question to the Power Users RE: Time Capsule Disk Mgmt and Security

I was real excited to get the Time Capsule, but now since I have it I have to say its lack of security and disk management features are disappointing.
I am thinking of giving up on Time Machine backups completely (I have never been thrilled with TM) and using the Backup 3.0 that is available to .Mac users. If I backup one machine using TM to the TC, I can login from a different machine and modify/delete the backups, this is not secure from accidental or malicious access.
What I am hoping to do is to create logical partitions on the drive and use a program like PGP to encrypt the disk. This so far has been a real pain in the @$$ because of the lack of disk mgmt with the TC.
I have used the OS X disk utility to create a disk image (takes forever) and it does not automagically mount itself, so PGP will not recognize it is a disk. I then decided to start over and use the Airport Utility to erase the disk (this has been running for about 12 hours now, and is still flashing amber). I am not sure if this TC is DOA or just slow as cr@p.
If anyone has any ideas on how to make an out of the box TC more secure, please share.

Have you been able to get all of your applications to recognize the disk image as a place to save/create/modify files?
All applications? Only tried some - but since I was able to copy 56GB of iTunes content to the drive and access it with TuneRanger - I am fairly certain it is universally available.
With the encrypted disk image, can you decrypt that image from another machine with a passphrase? I believe the answer is no, which is why I want to use PGP to encrypt the disk image.
I believe the image is not machine restricted. The only encrypted image I have is on a USB memory stick. I will have to try and open it on my other mac.
I did create a 50GB disk image successfully, however I changed my mind and decided I wanted to create an image using the entire TC disk.
I deleted the disk image I had created, as well as the TM backups on the disk. I then used the Airport Utility to do a "quick" erase of the disk, and now 36 hours later it is still erasing the disk.
That sounds wrong.

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

  • Time Capsule disk disconnect and reconnect every 5 minutes

This problem began with Airport Firmware 7.6, and has continued to perist with every subsequent firmware version.  Reverting to firmware version 7.5.2 eliminates the problem.  Running with the latest firmware version 7.6.3, on OS X 10.8.2, the Time Capsule disk is disconnected and reconnected every 5 minutes, and this is seen in the console log:

Has anyone found a solution to this, other than reverting to Airport Firmware 7.5.2?

Welcome to the club.. there is a very long thread.. here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526741?tstart=0
There seems to be any number of factors.. where the solutions are little silly things..
Start from the end of the thread and work backwards as this has been ongoing for a long time.. and experience has improved.
What you are seeing btw is the change apple made in Lion and 7.6 to higher security version of AFP.. but it is a mess IMHO.. and has not worked at all well.

  • Length of the power cable for Time Capsule

This probably sounds like a ridiculous question, but I need to know how long the power cable is that comes with the Airport Time Capsule. I'm planning to buy one this week but will need to move some things around to accommodate it, hence my question!

72 inches or about 183 Centimeters.

  • Lost the power cord for time capsule!

So I've lost the power cord for my time capsule. I went to an Apple store and they don't sell them but the employee said that it is a standard cord and I should be able to pick one up at a Radio Shack or the like? Has anybody else had to do this? I can't find the specs on the time capsule either of exactly what type of cord is needed.

who ever told you that has Model: 61-2876 | Catalog #: 61-2876 cord in mind. I'm not sure if it will work...it looks close....are you saying you were told you can't order a replacement cord from Apple?

  • My Epson 645 printer can't see the SSID from my Time Capsule but computers and iPhones can. Any explanation/fix?

I could understand better if none of my devices could see the AirPort, but everything works fine except my Epson printer and my Canon printer--they simply can't see the SSID when I try to set them up.
I've had them a year, they have been working fine until today. I simply can't explain the printers couldn't se it, but everything else can.

Power cycle the printers themselves is perhaps the most important.
The wifi outage is related.. no doubt about that.
Sometimes Apple names are difficult for non apple (ie stuff made by anybody but apple) to work with.
If you have no luck.. full reset is the order of the day.
Use all names that meet SMB network standards.. that means short,, no spaces.. and stick with pure alphanumeric.
Apple wizard chooses your name.. plus device name.. so you end up with a name like
    Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule
This is hopelessly wrong.. reduce it to FBATC
The wireless name can be even worse..
When things go wrong.. setup names that are different for both bands.. and put the band in the name.
So tc24ghz and tc5ghz work well for me.  I often will have a gen number in there as I repair them and need to know which is which so tcgen324ghz is meaningful.. note no full stop.. no punctuation.. no spaces.. you could use other characters like dash or underscore.. but like I said.. stick with simple.
Last bit is channels.. wireless is subject to interference.. one thing that can happen is someone starting up a wifi device near you.. (or a microwave with a leaky door etc). Stick to fixed channels.
The idea is to remove the level of voodoo as much as possible.. ie from 80% to a mere 66%..
All wireless is voodoo but by controlling as much as you can.. you can reduce it slightly.

    Hello,
I have a 1 T time capsule which i use to back up and for wifi.. i am fearing of it being abused for cecking out my data. How can change it and prevent this from happening in the future..
    Thanks

You can encrypt your backup but this is a very long process.
You may do better to simply wipe the backup and start again.
    See Pondini.

Changing wireless password is very easy.. open the airport utility.. click on TC then edit.. and then wireless tab.. and type in a new password.. update.

Where do I find the "Archive" option mentioned here?
Apple left this out (along with a number of other features and functions) in the new "upgraded" AirPort Utility.
Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , which offers far more functionality. This version was introduced on the same day as AirPort Utility 6.0, but apparently many users missed it.
You can keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the one that you want.

I have an existing new belkin modem router which works fine with quiet a few wired and wireless products in my house. My question is if i buy a time capsule can i put it in another room and wirelessly connect it to the belkin modem router, I would then just like my macbook pro and (imac future purchase) to wirelessly back up to it???????????

Your will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the TIme Capsule to clear out the current network settings and then reconfigure it to "join" your wireless network using the AirPort Utility setup application.
To perform the Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule....
Pull the power cord from the back of the device
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule and keep holding it an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power cord back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 25-30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    On your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Continue
Follow the guided setup and choose the "join" option when it appears duriing the setup
You will need to know the exact type of wireless security that the Belkin router is using to enter this information during the setup of the Belkin. Otherwise, the Time Capsule cannot join the network, and you will receive an error message after the configuration process.

    Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.
Apple's printing support documents contain a great deal of redundancy, but this one may be a good place to start: OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer to print wirelessly

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • Power consumption of Time Capsule in standby

    Hi
Just wondering if there is some kind of standby mode on the Time Capsule, which stops the harddrive when it's not in use - in other words, when I'm only using the route functionality of the Time Capsule?
Furthermore: what's the power consumption of the Time Capsule in standby mode? I know that apple stats a max of 30Watts, but at the end of the day that turns out to be quite a lot of money if you only use the harddrive while home playing music or making a backup.
    Kind regards
    Jens

I've spoken to Apple support regarding these questions.
If you are using Time Capsule to back up the data on your computer(s), the hard drive is only spinning during the back up process. If you are listening to music or watching video stored on the Time Capsule, the disc will of course be spinning during this time.
When the Time Capsule disc is not spinning and the unit is providing router and wireless functions, the Time Capsule is using approximately 10 Watts of power.

  • HT1178 What the difference is between WPA and WPA2 and how are these settings affecting the access of other computers to the internet through my Time Capsule

I have a Time Capsule of the 4th generation and I am pretty impressed since I just had a fried harddrive on my 3 month old Imac and Time Capsule restored it fully including all programs etc. without having me to put in all serial numbers etc. for that I give it an A+. However what I find very frustrating is the very short and incomplete user manual and setup instructions. I give those a D-. It does not explain the consequences of certain choices to a normel non computer gig user like me:
I do not understand what the consequences and difference is between the security setting WPA/WPA2 and WPA2 when setting it up. It would be helpful if the manual would explain something like: If you set it onto WPA2 then computers older than XXX years will not able to hook up to the internet through your router...or the likes, since I slowly supect this may be the reason for some of my troubles.
I also have a 5 year old PC with vista connected to the Time Capsule. It can wireless connect to the Time Capsule and access the printer (I have managed that after some painful hours...) but it cannot access the internet with that PC through the timecapsule wireless, only if I hook it up with a cable. Why? Does that have to do with the fact that I have set the TIme Capsule to WPA2?
Our PS3 can connect wireless, no problem. However, I friend of mine tried it with a quite new Toshiba Notebook and he could see the Time Capsule but again it shows the line from the Time Capsule to the internet blocked. All other computers linked with data cable to the Time Capsule are connected to the internet no problem. What have we done wrong? Should I change the security setting to WPA/WPA2?
I tried the latter, but then another problem does come up, which was there from beginning on: When I change the settings for my Time Capsule my Imac suddenly cannot find the Timne Capsule anymore, even so I am only 3feet away from it. When I set it up for the first time 3 month ago it drove me crazy. The very first time it found the Time Capsule right away. But when I discuverd a mistake in my initial setup and I went through the settings again to change stuff it suddenly could not find the Time Capsule anymore. Only after frustrating 20 times or so with turning wi-fi on and off several times inbetween did it suddenly find the Time Capsule in the set up menu. However, when I tried changing my security setting to WPA/WPA2 today to see whether this solves my other problems again it could not find the Time Capsule when I was finished with the settings and I had to give up/cancel. Why is that???
I would really appreciate some help here. But please I am not a computer gig and normally always had assistance with these things. On the other hand I am not all stupid either (even so these manuals assuming we all grew up sleeping on a computer make me feel stupid).....
    Thank you all in advance

Hello Schimi. The Time Capsule is a kind of product that offer you two possibility:
    - To use the TC as a router or as an external HD.
The difference between WPA and WPA 2 are:
    - They are two kinds of internet connection.
WPA uses dynamic key encryption , which means that the key is constantly changing and makes the invasion of a wireless network more difficult than WEP . WPA is considered one of the highest levels of wireless security for your network and is recommended if your devices support this kind of encryption . Newer routers offer WPA2 security . WPA2 is compatible with WPA , but offers higher security level . In fact, it meets the high standards of many government agencies . If the router and computer support WPA2 , this should be your choice.
If you need any help or if you find some difficult setting up it you can contact Apple Support.
I am sure that they can help you with that.
I am sory for the delay. I holpe that you solve your issue.

  • P35 Platinum: I have to press the power button multiple times to start

    Hello fellow MSI customers,
as written in the subject, I have a problem with starting my PC. When I press the power button, the computer powers on, but there is no output to the screen. In fact, my LCD stays in standby mode. I can hear the fans running, so something is going on. According to the LEDs on the mainboard, it is a memory problem.
Now I turn the computer off, using the power button (have to hold it for a few seconds). When off, I start again and everything runs as it should.
After starting, I ran memtest86 multiple times without any errors. I ran a few games, compiled some programs, installed Vista 64bit, Linux, all without any crashes or hangups. It is just the starting that makes problems. After booting it is very stable.
Seeing that it could be a memory problem, I brought another pair of memory, just to be sure. I couldn't reproduce the problem on that day! Any type of memory I put in (the one before, or the newly brought home) the computer always started on the press of the button. So I thought, OK, maybe they were not seated correctly. But, alas, two days later it is again only starting by pressing the power button three times.
     What I tried:
     1. Boot using only 1 piece of memory stick
     2. Boot using only 1 piece of memory, but different one
     3. Use another pair of memory   <-  worked, but on that day it also worked using my original memory
     4. Disconnected everything except graphics card, to make sure it is not a power supply issue (minimized power usage)
     5. Tried all of the above with a different processor
     6. Used another power supply
    Any other ideas?
    Here are my specs:
    MSI P35 platinum
    Core2 Q6600
    Nvidia 7900GT
    4GB V-Data DDR2 800MHz      <--- I think this is the problem, any experiences?
    Enermax Liberty 400W
a few other things (HDDs, XFi, DVD-RW)
By the way, how can I boot from an external DVD-RW? It doesn't show in the menu when I press F11 (boot menu).
Thank you for any help, muro
And just to let a bit of steam off:
    1. I had major problems with the RAID controller (not MSI fault, rather intel) - I put two disks into a RAID 0, then RAID 1 and they always failed after a few boots - member missing on both disks. I was getting angry, so I put them as normal (non RAID) disks and everything is fine since, although no RAID.
    2. Installing anything except windows with an IDE DVD-RW is very hard. It took me ages until I got Ubuntu booting (there are guides on the net, google is your friend), and much longer to get grub (boot loader) working. Long story short - if you have multiple disks, use the Linux disk as the bootable, do NOT put grub on the disk where Vista is installed.
    3. I have no idea, how to update the BIOS, if I had to. I'm using 1.1 that came on the board. I use 64bit Vista and Linux, none of which is supported to upgrade the BIOS. Any hints how to do it (if I needed to)?

    Hello,
now today is the day I've finally received my replacement board. The good news first - it DOES work! Yepeeee!
     Now some more information:
The jmicron controller seems to be missing - a screen with something about "Marvel" is shown before the intel raid screen. However, it is only visible for a fraction of second, so I cannot read it. I think it detects my IDE DVD-RW so I'm quite certain it's the replacement for jmicron. I won't miss it - it took me ages to install Linux with the jmicron controller.
The problem where I had to restart the computer sometimes because it didn't even post (RAM error) is gone. It boots just fine now.
I had an extremely long first post - about a minute, but after that it boots very fast now.
anyway, regarding some questions around here - the manual states MSI recommends using an 350W power supply. My 400W is more than enough. Please note - it is an Enermax, not one bundled with a cheap case. My cheap RAM sticks also work very well now. I did try them on different boards before, so now I know I just had a faulty board.
In the end, I can only say this: This is my 3rd board already and it's the first one that works well. As the hardware changed, I presume there were major issues with this board that lead them to make a new revision. What is strange, though, is that the revision is still 1.1, as were my previous two. I pity everybody who had the same problems as I did, but I can now say that I'm very happy about the board now.
     Cheers, muro

  • How to erase the existance of a Time capsule

    Hi,
I would like to know how to erase the existance of a Time capsule, like it never existed, because sometimes I can see remains of my old network, and I'd like to know how to reset all this,
    sincerely

    Welcome to the discussions!
You will want to do two things to get the TC back to total factory defaults:
1)Return all configuration settings to factory defaults
2)Erase your disk. (Do this only if you want to erase all of your backups).
Power down the TC for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and KEEP holding it in as you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds
Your configuration is now reset to factory defaults.
    To erase the disk:
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Disk icon at the top of the setup pane
Click the Disks tab just below the icons
Click Erase. Choose your erase options only if you want to erase all backups.
    That's it.
