  • Deskjet 6940 connected via ethernet cable to Airport, will not print

    Hello,
I used to run my HP Deskjet 6940 printer using a USB connection. I recently installed an Apple Airport Extreme so I can print wirelessly. As required, the printer is now connected to the Airport using an ethernet cable, and the green network light is on. On the advice of an HP rep via telephone, I uninstalled all older HP software and reinstalled HP software downloaded from the HP website.
When I try to add the printer on my "System Preferences," it opens a panel that contains the following options:
Protocol: Automatically chooses "line printer daemon--LPD"
Address: Blank but allows me type in the assigned IP address
    Print using: No idea.
Two more things: when I open HP device manager, and select 'configure a networked printer, all network confirguation info appears fine but the manager does not allow me  to "apply" it.  Not sure if this is important but no printer utilities show up in my utlities folder since the new software download. Thanks.
    This question was solved.

It looks like you are running a Mac.
First of all, the driver for the Deskjet 6940 is built into the Mac OS.  You really didn't need to download extra stuff from www.hp.com (sorry about the bad advice).
Next, let's verify that the printer is on the network.  From Safari, select Bookmarks, Show All Bookmarks.  Select Bonjour from the left hand pane and verify that the Deskjet 6940 appears on the list of devices found on your network.
Next, follow these instructions to reset the Mac printing subsystem:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341
Now add the printer from the Print & Fax applet under System Preferences by pressing the [+] button.  The Deskjet 6940 should be listed as one of the Bonjour kind of printers.  Select it and then press Add.
I think that should do it.

  • Using Time Capsule as an external hard drive with ethernet cable, disabling airport, using wifi from laptop

Okay, first of all, I admit right off the bat that I should have bought an external hard drive.  Now I am stuck with a 3TB Time Capsule that I want to tie to my laptop via ethernet cable, without having the Time Capsule disable my laptop's current wifi.  So, I want to be able to back up my laptop (using the ethernet cable and Time Machine) to my Time Capsule drive and still be able to be surfing the internet as if I didn't have Time Capsule at all.
My MacBook Pro is OS 10.7.5.
    Any thoughts are much appreciated.

    This is not difficult.
You need to work out one issue beforehand..
What IP address range does the computer get from the wifi router.. ?
If you get 10.0.x.x then you will need to adjust the settings on the TC to a different IP range.. eg 192.168.1.1 for the TC.
Tell me what IP you get on wireless. I will assume for now you are getting 192.168.x.x
In the ethernet setup on the laptop, choose configure IPv4 Manually.
Give the computer an IP address say 10.0.1.10 with 255.255.255.0 subnet. Do not fill in router or dns values.
You can now find the ethernet linked TC and get internet via the airport.
On the TC itself, just leave it in router mode.. and ignore all the errors.. turn off the wireless.

  • Two Thunderbolt Ethernet Cables - one for internet, one for Raspberry Pi

Hi, I'm running against a wall with this issue.
I recently purchased a second Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter, so that I could use one to connect to the internet via ethernet, and another, to connect my rMBP with a Raspberry Pi via ethernet. Try as I might, I cannot get both to work at the same time - - I've tried changing the sort-order to be either RPI-TB & Ethernet-TB, or Ethernet-TB followed by RPI-TB - -- I'm simply unable to connect to the RPI's IP-address (which would be 192.168.2.200) if I have functional internet on at the same time.
How should I go about fixing this issue - I would really rather not be using Wi-Fi.

    Hi, JerBear65,
Thanks for the suggestion; I followed your instructions and found:
    1. All of my listed servers are in use, so that wasn't it.
    2. The e-mail account configuration can't be the problem since, when I created the e-mail account(s) to try the various alternative OS X and OS 9 mail applications, I had to create the accounts fresh in those programs (I never normally used them before). Also, when I tried other existing e-mail accounts that I have on the same ISP in my normal e-mail activity, the problem was consistently the same throughout all the trial runs. It would have been unlikely that ALL of the settings for ALL of my seven e-mail accounts were simultaneously corrupted.
On the other hand, if I'm correct in assuming a corrupt preference file somewhere, it would have to be related to sending e-mail in OS X, yet NOT be accessed when sending e-mail while in OS X but sending through Classic 9.
That's what makes this problem so weird...
Regards, and thanks for your suggestion, and any others you might have,
    Alan Paul
    ==============================================
    Hello Alan Paul,
The first thing you might try is from the desktop.
Choose Go>go to folder and type library/scripts/mail
scripts and hit Go. Then choose manage SMTP
    servers.scpt
his will open the Script Editor and you would chose
Run. After it runs, it will show all mail severs not
in use and you can delete them.
When you close Script Editor it will ask if you want
to save the changes click YES so the changes will
take affect. Then restart and see if that helps.
The only other thing would be to delete that email
    account and then reconfigure.

  • Two Ethernet Devices One Airport Express?

I need to connect a non-wireless printer and DirectTV box to my wireless network as they are not located close enough to the router to connect via Ethernet.
I currently have my printer connected to my Airport Express via Ethernet, and have also been able to connect my DTV box this way as well. However, currently I can't connect both at the same time.
Is there a way to connect both at the same time? Some kind of mini-router that plugs into the Airport Express?

I have an old hub, I think the 10/100 type. That should be more than enough for printing, but probably not for the DTV box?
DTV is still using a 100 Mbps Ethernet port as far as I know, so the old hub should work OK. If you buy a new switch, it would be a good idea to spend a few more dollars and get a Gigabit Ethernet switch. it's 10/100/1000 capable.
The USB port on the AirPort will probably work...if you want to go through the hassle of setting up the printer.
If Ethernet is working well now, I would leave well enough alone.  The USB port will only allow for printing....not advanced features like maintenance, scan, copy etc if you have an all-in-one type device.

  • Why can't I locate airport extreme, WiFi HP 7520 all-in-one, and WD MyBook Live (ethernet cable to airport).

I installed OS X Mavericks two days ago.  My computer will not access Airport Extreme.  I downloaded printer software for Mavericks for HP 7520 a wireless machine.  The HP 7520 can find Airport but my computer can find neither.  (A direct USB hookup does work, however.)  For Time Machine backups I am using WD MyBook Live 3T.  The HP and WD are share with my wife who uses a MacBook Pro, is running OSX 10.6.8, and is having no issues.  Software seems to be up to date in both machines.  These things seem to point to the Airport Extreme being the problem.  How can it be fixed?

  • Connecting iMac to Network via Ethernet Cable and Airport Express

I've tried reading through the various posts to solve this and haven't had any luck. Any help is deeply appreciated.
I have an Airport Extreme as my main 'base' for our wireless network. I purchased an Airport Express today with the notion of using it to extend my network in the following way: I want to connect an iMac and a printer to the Express (using Ethernet and USB cables respectively) and have the Express serve as a remote for the Extreme base. I have found a number of websites saying this is possible, but none explain how to. I tried the WDS option, which failed to work. I later saw posts here saying that was not the optimal scenario. I'm afraid the 5Ghz/2.4Ghz settings combined with Airport ID addresses has pushed me past my competency!
Thanks in advance for your help and a festive St. Patrick's Day!

Temporarily, power down the AirPort Express and concentrate on the AirPort Extreme to make sure that it is functioning correctly, can get an Internet connection, etc.
A complete power cycle of the network is often useful when you have been making changes. Power everything off, order is not important.
Wait a moment, (or wait 5-10 minutes if you have cable modem), then power up the modem first and let it run a moment by itself. Then power up the AirPort Extreme the same way.
Check your settings using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
If the Wireless Mode setting is "Create a wireless network", make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Note the exact setting for Security that is being used
    Update to save any changes
Post back when the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly as above and we'll tackle the AirPort Express

  • Connecting two Mac minis and using one monitor

I am thinking about getting two Mac minis to run concurrently, accessing both on the same Thunderbolt Display (also to be acquired) using screen sharing and connecting the two Macs via firewire (or thunderbolt).
I have certain programs I need to run in Windows (Bloomberg terminal and MS Excel in Windows version) but don't want to run them in parallel on one computer as (in my experience) the performance is very slow.
By running two computers at the same time, I'm hoping that can avoid the entire system griding to a halt. I also think it will allow me to upgrade more cheaply as the Mac mini is improved over time.
Is this a completely daft idea? Would I be better off with a new iMac or a refurbish Mac Pro?
Any feedback is welcome, even of the abusive variety.

"File sharing preferences" is indeed how to do it.  Connect both minis to your router (one by ethernet cable, one by wifi, it doesn't matter.)
Then turn on "File Sharing" in Sharing Prefs on both minis.  Also, give them both meaningful, different names under "Computer Name".
Then, when you open a finder window on one mini, the other one should appear under "Shared", like this:

  • How to extend wifi range using Airport Extreme and Airport Express connected via ethernet cable

    Hello,
I'm having an Airport Extreme fifth generation in my living room. I bought yesterday an Airport Express to extend the range of my WIFI in the house and I put in in my bed room. The two devices are connected together via an ethernet cable, from airport extreme (lan 1 port) to airport express to (wan port). Now from the airport utility what configuration I have to set to the airport express in order to extend my wifi range? Inside the wireless tab what i have to select in the network mode?
    1. Create a wireless network (use same same wireless network name and pass work as the airport extreme)
    2. Join a wireless network
    3 Extend a wireless network ?
    Thank you

You are way overthinking this. The utility will literally configure everything for you automatically. All that you need to do is name the device and click Next during the setup.
You can use your Mac using Mountain Lion or an iPhone or iPad.
Post back if you need the steps.

  • Is it possible Cisco E1000 as a Host Router and my airport express as extender without ethernet cable?

i have my cisco E1000 as a router at the moment, just bought airport express for an extender.
is it possible to do it? thx guys

No, not unless you connect the two with an Ethernet cable and configure the Express as a bridge.
Consider replacing the Cisco router with the Express. The Express conveys advantages over the E1000.

  • How to split mailservices among two servers (no xsan yet)

How can I split the load on our mailserver (getting rid of the daily VM growth and potential crashes / down time) by using TWO servers as opposed to one?
Apparently the root of the cause is too many imapd connections and DirectoryServices then gets in to problems stalling the whole server (EG see my latest 3-4 posts)
SMTP out of the house should not pose a problem, and access for the end users to the (manually moved) imap data location should be handled easily after pointing the users to the second mailserver in WGM.
BUT incoming mail makes me unsure - port 25 can only be pointed to one server on the LAN (naturally , so how do I configure the ("primary") mailserver to make sure that the local mail-delivery (for the users that use the second mailserver) will actually be sent to this second server.
I would think that this should be easily possible - somehow - and that the LMTP service will be the part responsible for this change.
PS.: I still cannot understand why a dual 2 GHz intel server is unable to perform satisfactory - with 10.5.6 server - serving the small amount of IMAP users we have, ca. 250 users.
Currently ps ax | grep imapd | wc -l tells me that I have up to ca. 150 connections when the VM growth warnings starts to show up in the system.log

The server is still pretty much having the default setup, though I have implemented Pterobytes "Frontline Spam Defense", but:
    A. I have incresed the number of processes as per an Apple article for "heavily loaded servers":
    cat /etc/launchd.conf
    limit maxproc 1000 2000
    B. I have changed /ets/cyrus.conf
    IMAP increased to 5
    LMTPUNIX increased to 2
    <pre> imap cmd="imapd" listen="imap" prefork=5
    imaps cmd="imapd -s" listen="imaps" prefork=0
    lmtpunix cmd="lmtpd" listen="/Volumes/Bric-RAID-03-up/Mail/imap/socket/lmtp" prefork=2</pre>
I got this advise from Pterobyte a year ago when I had problems with the performance of the old mailserver (the hw was a G4, the hint helped a lot!)
The timeout you refer to is not set in the config file (also not in a fresh in stall of 10.5.6), it's only listed (as 30) in /etc/imapd.conf.default.
But I presume that if the parameter is not set in my cinf file, then the default files settings are in effect(?)
I was thinking of changing this value just yesterday, but after reading the man imapd.conf I thought that it would not make any diference, since 30 is "the minimum":
    timeout: 30
The length of the IMAP server's inactivity autologout timer, in minutes. The
minimum value is 30, the default.
I guess I have to make this chang anyway
The server is a dual 2 GHz intel with 5 GB ram (and still 4 vacant slots).
Today's top output looks like this (the server was rebooted 24 hours ago!)
Mail spool (currently ca. 120 GB) is on an RAID-5 xraid
    <pre>Processes: 171 total, 2 running, 169 sleeping... 741 threads 10:57:37

I have been running Apples top-guide.pl script for a couple of days to monitor the servers "health" in general as well as I am logging the number of imapd connections every minute.
I dont find the numbers alarming.
During the max load yesterday (between 12.10-12.48) there was a peak of 210 imapd connection (users coming back from lunch and checking mail?).

  • Controlling 2 different iPad apps (digital mixer and DMX lights) using one airport express

    Hi,
I'm using an AIRPort Express 802.11n for my digital mixer MACKIE DL1608 which is controlled by my iPad ie. iPad (app is Masterfader) talks to airport express, from LAN out to ethernet to mixer.  My question is: can i use the one airport express to also run another device by using some kind of double LAN out adapter?  I also want the same iPad to controll my DMX lights ie. iPad (app is Luminair) talks to airport express that connects from LAN out to ethernet to lights controller.
Otherwise if I need to get two seperate airport expresses, are there any complications with having them sitting close to one another (as I will operate them from the same carry case)?
    Thanks in anticipation

A small ethernet hub or switch should be able to handle that.

  • It seems like Ethernet backup and Airport backup goes in different ways

Since one month a go, I've been having problems with Time Machine backup over Time Capsule.
When I run Time Machine through Ethernet, there is no problem. Fast and clean. In the Console there is not any error message.
I unplug ethernet cable, start airport, and in the next copy appears: "Bulk settings atributes failled", several times. Few backups after it will appear problems with a "file path" and few after will appear "deep traversal".
I plug the Ethernet cable, disconnect airport and I forced to re-index the image bundle. Few backups correct with Ethernet. Unplug ethernet, connect airport, and again the same history.
It seems like Ethernet backup and Airport backup goes in different ways.
Permissions are corrected and there is no problems in any disc with First Aid.
    ¿Any idea?. Thanks in advance.

I am having the same issue.  I have three layered elements as three columns in the body of the page.  When I add the farthest right element it pushes the other left elements to the bottom of the page.  There are aren't any other elements on the page.
Is this a CSS issue?  I thought about exporting to Dreamweaver and fixing it there but would like to take the easy route first.

  • Plugging working internet cable into Airport disables connection

I updated MacBook Pro to 10.7.3 and Airport 7.6.1.  Now Airport utility shows I have no internet connection, no DNS and ethernet is unplugged (yellow indicator for internet and flashing yellow indicator for airport in utility).  If I plug ethernet cable into my MacBook Pro, internet works fine (internet light shows green in Airport utility, Airport light flashes yellow), but as soon as I plug the cable back into the Airport station, the internet light goes back to yellow and the Airport light continues to flash yellow.  In other words, plugging a working ethernet cable into Airport disables the connection.  I can't figure out what's going on.  Any help please!

I reinstalled combo update, unplugged airport and cable modem for an hour, reconnected both and all is well again.

  • Sharing one ethernet cable with two macs using a USB Ethernet Adaptor

I have two computers running Mac OS 10.6 but only one ethernet cable in my office. One ethernet cable goes from the wall to Mac #1. I have a cisco USB Ethernet Adaptor USB300M that I like to use as OUTGOING ethernet cable from Mac #1 to plug into Mac #2. Does anybody know how this works? Simply plugging it in does not work. Thanks for any suggestions!

If either of these computers is a Mac Pro (65 lb.) tower, all of which have two Ethernet jacks, Internet sharing is crisply supported with any additional Hardware. Cable the wall jack Ethernet to the first Ethernet port, then cable the second Ethernet port to the second Mac. Configuration is described in this article:
