Question: Which iMovie .plist do you delete?

I'm confused sometimes as to which .plists to delete when iMovie is having problems. I've been noticing as I help people out on the iMovie Discussion group there are a lot of different preferences folders lying around on the Macintosh. For instance:
Example 1: This one is kind of funny because it's two Library folders inside of the Home folder of the user. The path would be like this using the Unix file paths: /Users/Home folder/Library/Library/Preferences. To be honest I didn't find any iMovie .plists in this folder but I did find iPhoto and iDVD.
Example 2: This one is the regular Library that used to be visible in OSes prior to Lion 10.7 but is now hidden away. This is typically where everyone on the iMovie Discussion Group is told to go to delete the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist for problems relating to iMovie '11.
Example 3: This one is in the top level Library folder and it also has a com.apple.iMovieApp.plist contained in it.
Question: Given that there is more than one of these .plist files in more than one spot, should people be deleting more than one .plist file if they are having difficulty with iMovie launching, crashing or unable to operate properly?

Hi elikness,
iMovie should be reading plists from only one directory, the local user library. ~/library/preferences/
Ex1:  /Users/Home folder/Library/Library/Preferences/ could have been a result of poor troubleshooting. If you are to move the library folder, it is better to rename it via ROOT and test and then rename it back via ROOT again.
Ex2: is correct ~/library/preferences/
Ex3: I don't have any imovie plists in /Mac HD/library/preferences/. This will have no effect when pulling it.
I hope this helps clarify.
Let me know you if I can provide further assistance.

  • Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to? NO WAY TO ANSWER THIS

In setting my options. I come to this question: "Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to?"
I also see a system-defined answer: "No topics defined".
And there is no drop-down list or text box, so so no visible way to set up some topics.
So - How do I define a topic or list of topics?

It's FireFox, when I set options for receving posts from the support site (like whether or not I want to receive a digest or individual e-mails). This particular aption is supposedly set be responding to the question "Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to?"

It says 'To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.'
However I only have one account. I've tried to sign out and in several times. But it doesn't work. I do remember changing my password recently. Secondly I'd like to add that I got this macbook air 3 days ago. I'm a first time mac user. It had three updates initially. Mountain lion 10.8.2, iphoto and the imovie. I updated the mountain lion, thinking I'd get the iphoto and imovie done later. However now this problem has come up. Thanks for responding. Hoping to hear from you soon again regarding this.

  • How do I delete an idvd project from my hard drive?  If I do so, will it delete the raw videos/images from iphoto or imovie?  Thank you

I understand that an imovie or idvd project will take up quite a bit of space on my hard drive, so after I create the movies on either program I want to delete them.  I can't figure out how to delete them on idvd.  Should I go to finder?  I'm so confused!

iDVD only uses pointers to the media, photos and QT files, that it uses in its projects.  So if you delete a movie that you used in it that movie will be lost to iDVD.
However you can use the File ➙ Archive Project... menu option and that will copy the media into the iDVD project package. Then if you delete the movie file the archived project will still have its copy of the movie to use.
You won't be able to go back and make any changes to the movie if you do this.  So wait until the project is complete and burned to disk before archiving and deleting the movie files.
Personally I would get an external HD and save those movies and other files that you might want to delete from your boot drive because you never know when you might want to go back and make changes.  Once they are deleted you can't go back.

  • Two part question 1) what happens if you  sign into messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5 after it expired? does the whole application not work or just imessage? 2) does installing messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5  delete ichat?

    Two part question
    1) what happens if you  sign into messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5 after it expired? does the whole application not work or just imessage? can you stil use AIM, jabbar, google talk, or yahoo?  if you open messages beta does it immediately tell you that messages beta expired?
    2) does installing messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5  delete ichat or just transform ichat into messages beta giving the illusion that ichat is deleted?

    Hi,
It was never completely clear whether it was just hidden or whether Apple ran a download page for iChat 6.
As the Download for Messages Beta was separate and "Deleted" iChat it would seem it would be another download for iChat 6.
iMessages will not function as it is only an Account type within Messages and iChat 6 does not have it.
Therefore messages on the iPhone will not sync to the Mac. (until you get Mountain Lion and Messages in that OS X version).
Mountain Lion and it's full version of Messages will not sync the iMessages that have happened in between the 14th December 2012  (end date of Messages beta) and the Install of Mountain Lion if you decide on that route.

    Hi Mva,
If you set up a Rescue email address:
Go into Manage Your AppleID, https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/, select Password and Security, and click the first option (see below), and you will be able to proceed from there..... (I HOPE the first button is showing for you!)
    Reset your password
You can change or reset the password for your Apple ID account by providing some information.
    Select your authentication method.
Email authentication: To access your information, we will send an email to the rescue email address on file for you.
Answer security questions: To access your information, you will need to answer the security question(s) provided when you originally created your Apple ID.
If you did not set up a Rescue email address:
    1. Go to Express Lane  and select 'iTunes' from the list of 'products' in the middle of the screen.
Then select 'iTunes Store', and on the next screen select 'Account Management'
Next choose 'Apple ID Account Security' and fill in that you'd like your security
       questions/answers reset.
You should get an email reply within about 24 hours (and check your Spam folder as well as your Inbox)
    2. Once your questions have been reset, and you set up new ones, also set up a RESCUE EMAIL ADDRESS, so if you forget them again, you won't have to go through all of this.....
    Hope this helps!

    1) The people responding in this forum are just other Apple product users like you, not Apple itself.  Apple Support Communities is primarily an end-user to end-user (i.e., users like you helping other users) technical issue support feature. Feedback will truly get more attention if you send it using:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
    2)  At some stage developers decide it isn't worth the expense of supporting older technology. If I had my way you could still connect iOS7 to OS9, but Apple has decided to make the limit OS 10.6.8  Nor do I like that I can't get spare parts for my 33 year old car...
    Suggestions...
If you are not going to always be running the newest technology always read software requirements before doing any upgrades.  I run a 12 year old computer and yes, I see there are things I can't run (many), but I also then avoid buying any incompatible new technology.  The system requirements are printed on the side of the box (albeit in 9 point medium gray font on light gray box   )  Do not expect the Apple Store people to check with you about your computer first.  I bet half of them were still in grade school when my computer was produced and none of them could possibly imagine anybody would run anything older than 6 years (probably not even that, more like 4).
Why not buy Snow Leopard?  Of course you do not say what model computer you are using, but if you can run Snow Leopard on your computer there's no advantage to staying with Leopard.  Snow Leopard costs $20 which is minimal compared to you now no longer being able to sync your phone.

I'd swear I posted almost this identical post two hours ago...
If you can't/don't want to upgrade your computer, you have 30 days to return the phone I believe.

  • When you delete a clip in iMovie where does it go

When you delete a clip in iMovie where does it go? Is there a trash in imovie?

Where are you deleteing from?  Deleting clips from an Event moves them to the Trash.
Deleteing from a Project only removes it from the project and not from the source Event.
    (I'm refereing to iMovie '11)

  • Question which really disturbs you

    Hi experts,
I have a question which is really tempting me to ask somebody. But due to its
silly nature I never ask anyone. anyway im posting it now.
I'm inserting million of rows in a table which generates enormous Redo records
which makes redo buffer to fill. At one stage( possibly 1/3'rd of redo buffer) it is transferred to redologs, i.e. even uncommited transaction also gets logged in it.
I didn't commit any transaction untill now. My transaction never ends, i continue to insert more and more million records which makes the redolog file to fill and tends to switch the logfile. My database is in archive log mode.
    my question is,
    1. whether the uncommited transaction is written to archived logs.
    2. what will be the status of the controlfile at this point of time.
    3. If i issue rollback, will i retrieve data from undo.
    4. How is the transaction gets synchronized in database.
    please reply me
    Thanks
    SM

Oracle will 'empty' the redo buffer to theredo log file:
    - when it has filled to 1M
    - when it is 1/2 full
    - when a commit happens
    - every 3 seconds
    - when the DBWR is called to move out dirty blocks.
    This is documented at
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/process.htm#i7261
One of the benefits - we can minimize the time required to return from a commit request.
Remember that a commit request is simply a confirmation that the last remaining portion of a transaction's redo has been written to the redo log file. Once the commit has returned, we know that the redo information is safely tucked away, so other processes can use the resources we had been using.
(At the same time - we do not 'release' any resources as part of a commit. Others will come along and look whether the resources are in use, will note that we no longer need them, and will release the resources for us. So a commit can happen really fast.)
One common myth is that the tablespace's data files are important. They are nothing more than a backup (or materialized view) of the most recent contents of the database buffer cache plus any changes in the redo log file. By calling up the backup in the data files, we can avoid recreating a block from the initial format state and applying all redo. In an extreme case (called crash recovery) we actually do use a previous known image of the database blocks and apply redo.
Oracle will create an archive copy of a redo log after switching from the redo log and before reusing it. It does not matter whether a commit has happened.
During a transaction, the person making a change updates the block in place. A copy of the before image of the changed parts of the block (changed parts of the row) is placed in the UNDO or ROLLBACK area. Therefore, when a commit happens, the change is already in the block.
When a person 'A' wants to roll back, the block is rebuilt to the 'start of transaction' state. This is expensive - Oracle is built on the assumption that commits must be fast and commits happen a lot more often than rollbacks.
If person 'B' starts a a long query (say a table scan) on the same table as person 'A' is updating, but the scan gets to the block after person 'A' has updated the block, a 'consistent read' copy of the block will be created and the rollback will be applied to tyhe block. This ensures that person 'B' will always see the block the way it looked when his query started.
This consistent read process fails with an ORA-01555 "snapshot too old" error, if:
    - person 'A' has committed before person 'B' could rebuild the block, and
    - there is not enough rollback space to keep person 'A's undo lying around, and
    - someone else grabbed the rollback because they needed it for an update.

  • Missing iMovie plist?

    Hello,
I have been having some trouble with the clips in a project I'm editing, and have looked online for some solutions. I have often seen people adivsed to go to their references folder and delete the com.apple.iMovie.plist file. Then, when you restart iMovie, it will generate a new plist with the default settings restored.
My problem is that, when I go to Library/Preferences, there is no file by that name. I have com.apple.iLife.plist and com.apple.iLife09.plist, but not one for iMovie. Could this be the source of the problem?

I can't find a folder called "Home" I'm afraid. But, in the meantime, the same problem has occured again: I have been editing a project and it was going fine - but I shut down iMovie to do some other things, and when I reopened it, the project I was working on is now corrupted. When I select it from the list of projects I have, the "Edit Project" button goes grey, and I cannot even enter it to edit. Do you know why this might be? It seems so pernicious: randomly deciding that it is broken now, and cannot be used, which simply wastes so much of my time! I am desperate to be able to use this programme without interference from random bugs and crashes, but I can't seem to avoid them! What is most frustrating is that I use iMovie at work to create some very boring and generic material for my company, and it always works perfectly. But when I want to create something that I want to create, at home, suddenly the programme can't work. It is such a collosal waste of my time, but I really want to use it to make something.

  • Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  Only one Sparse Bundle, same name.

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups.  I use a synology DS212 for my time machine.  Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied  therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014.  As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012.  Not sure what that is.

This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

  • How do you delete a standard text created in SO10?

I have searched the forum and the web and can not find any answers to this question.
    I created a standard text in SO10 - i.e. called ZSTDTEST.
i can not find anyway to delete this.
I see once you are in SO10 under change mode - there is a delete in the drop down under "text" but i believe this is used for delting LINES in the actual text.
I must be missing something here - or perhaps once you create a text - that's it - you can not delete it.
    Thanks.
    Scott

    Well,
If you want delete them in your current system use FM u201CDELETE_TEXTu201D, but if you need to delete the standard texts across the systems basically, you have 2 options:
1-create an ABAP program and use FM u201CDELETE_TEXTu201D and pass all the text you want to this FM for deletion, you can do masking with an asterisk too i.e u201CZ_MY_TEXT_*u201D
2-I personally prefer this one, First, create a blank transport and write down the task id, and then take a list of all your standard texts which you want to delete and go to se38 and execute the ABAP program RSTXTRAN. This program will require the transport task id and the list of your standard texts to enter them in the transport. Once your transport has the unwanted standard texts go to FM u201CDELETE_TEXTu201D and delete these standard texts in your current environment.
Now, release the transport to go to other SAP environments.
This technique takes the deleted text ids and will delete the standard texts in any subsequent environments because you deleted them before releasing your transport.
    I hope this is sufficient
