Question: Why hasn't Palm put its software in an ereader? Its a perfect fit.

Maybe I'm missing some product out there, but why is Palm putting all its effort into Pre's and other micro screen phone devices, all aimed at twenty-somethings with good eyes, and not into ereaders?  Look, I'm over 50.  My eyes don't focus on miniature letters.  I DON'T read books or anything else on a phone screen.  I'm not going to watch movies on my phone, nor surf the net (slowly, I might add).  What I am going to do is do all the things I currently do on my Palm TX: Schedule my appointments, keep notes (DayNotez is not really available on any other platform), use databases and spreadsheets, etc.  You know.  Business type of applications.
Then I see the ereaders popping up everywhere.  Perfect.  Big screens (or at least considerably bigger than my TX screen). I was sure that Palm, which has the best operating system for such applications, would surely join the fray!  Nope.  Instead Palm is out trying to compete with the iphone for twenty-somethings who want to play music videos on their phones.
Listen up Palm:  There is a huge and growing population of people over the age of 40 who want a WORK application, like the Palm handhelds, that operate on a larger screen.  Imagine a Kindle with a Palm operating system!  I could carry all of the books I need, many of which are work related, AND keep my schedule, AND put all my other very useful Palm applications on my device.
WAKE UP PALM!  Put your system on an Ereader!
Thanks.
P.S.  If any such device already exists, please let me know.
Post relates to: Palm TX

This is precisely my point.  Palm is trying to compete, using its new OS, with the Apple iphone.  It won't win.  Moreover, the presumption of phone based systems is that the eyesight of the users is good, or even excellent.  This is true if you are in your twenties, or maybe thirties.  It isn't true in your 40's of 50's.  I also read ebooks on by Palm TX.  Its just a bit too small.  I can buy an ereader, which I will probably eventually be forced to do because I need a larger screen for larger text, but then I will have two devices to carry rather than one.  The bulk of the U.S. population will be over 50 in a few short years.  They want their PDA's.  Imagine this: If Palm, or the new owner of the operating system, put its system on an ereader (which, by the way, are still in their infancy), it could create a device that is 1) an ereader; 2) a PDA; and 3) able to use other products like spreadsheets and databases.  All of this would be on a screen large enough for a person with less than perfect eyesight (i.e., pretty much anyone over 40) to use.  Moreover, for work purposes, resource books and documents could be carried inside the ereader/PDA along with calendars, contacts, spreadsheets, and everything else. An "all in on" product.  Hmmm, sounds like what Palm used to be.
As it is, Apple's itouch and iphone have really minimal business software.  Most ereaders are limited to reading books bought online from one bookseller or another.  I haven't run Palm's new system, but if they made it so it actually works like a PDA rather than a toy for watching movies on a miniature screen, it might work as the basis for a ereader/PDA.
In any event, I find it sad to see Palm trying to compete in a market where it is highly likely to be swept away.  In the meantime, the perfect niche exists for its original software, where it excelled and where its expertise lies.  Either Palm enters the ereader/PDA environment quickly or it will be left in the dust.  In fact, Apple's new ereader seems oriented toward the PDA market.  The problem is, it will likely have the weak functionality of the itouch, which treats business uses as an afterthought.  As much as I like the dazzle of Apple's itouch and the like, Apple never has obtained the daily nuts and bolts functionality Palm had with its old operating system.  In fact, no one has.  But bet on it:  If Palm doesn't act quickly, someone will.  Maybe the company Palm so foolishly sold its old operating system to.

In some folks' version of the world, you have plenty of ways. YOu have the aforementioned services, you have iCloud, all you need is an internet connection and you're good to go. And that works perfectly...if you always have the internet.
If you want more non-internet dependant ways, then the best way to let Apple know is to send them feedback. They don't monitor or respond to this forum (Beyond removing rule breaking posts) but they do at least log feedback. However, the lack of a file manager will always be an obstacle. There are some apps out there that have at least a pseudo file manager - as in the ability to move documents into multiple other apps. I have Readdle Docs which I can use to download and move things around with, but again, back to the internet or wireless.

  • Question: Why will my Photoshop Elements 10 Software not reload on my computer?

I have been using Photoshop Elements 10 and Premier Elements 10 for some time now on my computer.  Less than a month ago, i had a bad virus on my computer and had to take it to a Computer Tech shop to be repaired.  They had to totally clean off the computer to eliminate the virus, it took two tries to get it clean.
I now can not get my software to reload.  I put the disc in and the 'install' screen does not come up.  How can i get it to reload?  Any help?  I do have the original box with the Serial Numbers ....but the screen to load and note them is not even coming up.
    Please Advise?

I'm not real computer literate. Might you know where'd I would find it?  There are 5 disks in the softwear, the first 3 are install files dependent on what Windows program is loaded. The last two say Content.   Thanks for your help!

  • Why does Apple not put its hands up regarding the "No SIM" problem?

After about 18 months of flawless use my iPad 2 developed the "No SIM" problem.
I tried one of the many nostrums on various bulletin boards, airplane mode on /off and so on, and the "No SIM" went away for a week.
It has since come back and will not shift.
On advice from Apple support I did a full restore.
The "No SIM" problem did not go away.
I have had much fruitless dialogue with the automatons at Apple.
The bottom line is that Apple - despite hundreds of complaints on their own bulletin boards, feign ignorance of this issue.
Opinion seems to be firm that this is a hardware problem.
Apple is saying, pay up almost the price of a new iPad and we will swap nout your iPad.
This is daylight robbery with bells on and typical of Apple's business model of selling products woth built in obsolescence.
Their share price will inevitably decline as the public gets fed up with Apple's arrogance and lack of customer empathy.

While most likely not of interest to you, Spotlight can also tell you where the files it finds are located
Hover the mouse pointer over the name, and press Command-Option and the path to the file will be displayed.
As for opening a terminal session in the directory where a file is located, there is Applescripts that do just that as well as specific features in Lion/Mountain Lion terminal:

  • Why Do People Make and Provide Software and Support for Free?

Hey all, I discovered Linux and open source software a little over 4 years ago now. It transformed the way I thought about software and using the computer. So now in my senior year of college I have chosen for open source software to be the subject of my thesis.
The topic of this thread is the research question of my thesis. But it is also question that I have been thinking about for the last couple years or so. Why do people decide to write software and then give it out for free for all to modify? The second has to do with forums like these. I have always wondered why people do help support on these forums for free when they can be making money doing the exact same thing. Below I will write 13 research questions that you guys can give me your answers or philosophy too.
    1. How long have you been using Linux?
    2. How did you learn/find out about Linux?
    3. Why have you chosen Linux over other operating systems available?
    4. Why did you choose to use your current distribution?
    5. Do you still use any closed source programs that are not available for Linux?
    6. Tell me the reasons that you contribute to the community?
    7. What do you think motivates others to contribute to the community?
    8. In your opinion, what reasons do you think others provide software to everyone for free?
    9. In what ways do you feel contributing to the community could benefit someone's future/career?
    10. What is it about contributing or programming that you enjoy most? Is there any aspects you dislike?
    11. Are you a member of other non-software communities? Such as a church, voluntary organizations or charities?
    12. Does your open source work spillover with any other areas of your life?
    13. If you provide support on forums such as these, why do it for free?
You DO NOT have to answer all 13 of the questions above. Please just pick out the ones that you feel are most important or interesting to answer. If someone else says something that you think is interesting feel free to respond to them if you agree or disagree.
If anyone wants to take this discussion further with me than the forum, I will absolutely love too! Just please send me a private message on here and we can figure out further ways of contacting each other.
I plan on using your user names on this forum to identify people in my paper. If any of you are uncomfortable with me using your username in my paper, please let me know! I will be monitoring this thread on a day by day basis for the next two months or so, until my thesis is complete. If you guys have any other questions that pop up, please do not hesitate to ask! Thank you all in advance for responding!

hockeyfighter09 wrote:1. How long have you been using Linux?
Roughly 3 years, with about 2 of those full-time. Tried out for 6 months a couple of years before that, but didn't stick.
hockeyfighter09 wrote:2. How did you learn/find out about Linux?
Older relatives/friends mentioned it in passing due to my interest in computers, was pointed to the (then-new) Ubuntu and actually given a CD (which I never used). Did read up a bit about it at the time, though.
hockeyfighter09 wrote:3. Why have you chosen Linux over other operating systems available?
Frustration with fixing Windows. Most of that came from my tinkering with it with a bunch of patches/hacks/cracks etc, necessitating a reformat every few months. Oh, and viruses would pop-up once in a while. Mac was always out of my budget (was a student, am still not done with my post-grad).
hockeyfighter09 wrote:4. Why did you choose to use your current distribution?
Ubuntu got quite frustrating from two aspects:-
    1. 'Freeze' policy kept creating lousy bugs. I would have maybe 12 external ppas enabled and of course they wouldn't always play nice with each other, simply because the repos I had been so in awe of when first starting out didn't actually contain all that many useful programs. Used Mint for a while, same problem (now I understand it was the same base).
    2. SNR of forums - When I first joined ubuntuforums it was like heaven-on-earth, so HELPFUL, so many replies almost instantly. It took me roughly 1 and a half months to notice that probably only 2 regular posters were worth listening to, the rest were trying to help with no knowledge to back them up.
So I tried Sidux, OpenSuse, Fedora, and finally read about Arch. Installed it side-by-side, and viola, it was fun! I like tinkering, basically, and Arch allows me to do it far more than Ubuntu/Windows (I class Ubuntu as similar to Windows by now) ever did.
hockeyfighter09 wrote:5. Do you still use any closed source programs that are not available for Linux?
Yes, some games through wine (not sure if that counts as 'available for Linux'. I do not boot into Windows at all, anymore (though its on my laptop).
hockeyfighter09 wrote:6. Tell me the reasons that you contribute to the community?
One of the best things I like about open-source is how most active projects have a community around them. So its not just software, but people working together (of course with heirarchies etc.), fits my Utopian view of how things 'should be(tm)'. I'm a sucker for Utopia, so I try to feed the community as far as possible.
hockeyfighter09 wrote:7. What do you think motivates others to contribute to the community?
A combination of 6. and substituting social deficiencies. Some come across as not actually having much of a social life (probably lack of those sharing nerdy interests in their area) and substituting that in online communities. This isn't really Linux specific, more internet-community specific.
hockeyfighter09 wrote:8. In your opinion, what reasons do you think others provide software to everyone for free?
Perspective of personal developer (one-man projects), I think its a mix of altruism (probably 20-30%), pride (50%) and commercial sensibility (the rest). Most of it is pride, the knowledge that many use my software.
For companies, as mentioned above, its very financially viable, especially in already-saturated markets.
hockeyfighter09 wrote:9. In what ways do you feel contributing to the community could benefit someone's future/career?
Not much, honestly. My career-line is education/engineering, so not much scope there. For someone in the computer sciences, of course there'd be more benefit, but not more than investing the same amount of time into part-time work to expand your portfolio. So for the INDIVIDUAL I believe participating in the community does not bring future/career benefits, we do it because we enjoy the community and want to see it succeed.
hockeyfighter09 wrote:10. What is it about contributing or programming that you enjoy most? Is there any aspects you dislike?
The sense of achievement, that what you do is useful to someone. The BIG dislike is when other members of the community don't feel the same way. There will always be members who are demanding (customer mentality) or abrasive (big tough guy mentality). Both are 'big city' mentalities with no place in the 'homely-little-town' community of Linux (that's how I see it anyway).
Oh, and noobs answering questions with no knowledge (something I've done before as well) are more annoying than noobs asking questions, personal opinion
hockeyfighter09 wrote:11. Are you a member of other non-software communities? Such as a church, voluntary organizations or charities?
I'm very active in my church (various leadership roles), and regularly help out at my fiance's NGO (mostly video work, ffmpeg and cinelerra stuff). A child sponsor and blood donor, etc. etc.
hockeyfighter09 wrote:12. Does your open source work spillover with any other areas of your life?
I don't 'work' on open-source, so a bit of a N/A here. What small patches I provide, or the moderating I do here, is just small contributions. Doesn't spill over to any other areas of my life, because computers are like that, compartmentalized away from the 'real world' (cue Matrix theme tune).
hockeyfighter09 wrote:13. If you provide support on forums such as these, why do it for free?
Like I said, in a small village community setting, people help and are helped for free. I do tech support for friends/relatives in RL for free, so on the forums, for very little time invested, why not?
In answer to litemotiv - yes control is MUCH more important than freedom. I've never really been taken by all of RMS' screaming and ranting. I'm an engineer by training, I want to know what's going on (to a reasonable degree) and control it. Philosophical discussions are interesting but ultimately a waste of time.

  • Why DDL during SELECT is possible. Or why SELECT does not put a table lock?

This is a question to people who really knows Oracle internals or/and RDB theory.
(The question is relocated from another thread for not hijacking on that's original question.)
Why DDL during SELECT is possible? Or why SELECT does not put TM 2 Row Shared lock on table(s)?
This not locking causes a possibility while one session is running a long select, another can truncate and even drop table(s) that are being read by the first session.
I think, humbly assume, that Oracle does not put TM 2 lock on tables, that are being simply SELECTed, by some significant technical reason. But I do not know this reason. If somebody knows please shed a light.
Also, if you know that this behavior is totally correct from perspective of RDB theory, please explain me.
I'll try to explain my point.
It is a matter of data consistency and integrity that is supported in Oracle everywhere except this place.
    a) If one session is reading data from moment T and other session changes data on its way at moment T1, the first session wont read that changed data, it will read the data that was there on moment T.
This is declared as Read Consistency principle.
    b) If one session is changing data, and another session tries to truncate or drop table - the second session will fail with error ORA-00054: resource busy and acquire with NOWAIT specified.
This is declared as Data Integrity principle.
    c) But why not to follow the above principles in case when one session reads data and another session tries to truncate or drop table (or do other DDL operations)?
It is counter-intuitive. Why not to put TM 2 (SS) lock during SELECT execution that would prevent DDLs on this table?
What I only can assume is that this is only because some technical difficulty or limitation.
What is this limitation or other reason in favor of which Oracle sacrificed consistency in this case?

    Aman,
There was no need to clarify how DML lock works, I know that.
Also I know that in Oracle a Select does not lock neither table rows nor table itself.
The reason I mentioned it because you brought up the word change which is far better suited for DML's than DDL's as the former has a requirement to have its Undo preserved.
Again, my question was why Select does not protect itself by locking table(s), partitions and indexes?Protect from what? There is nothing wrong with doing a select. What would happen with a select doing a lock on the table before being executed in its entirety (forget DDL and DML altogether for a moment) ? State one good reason that there should be a lock for the select. If it has to, it would be always isn't it?
The keyword here is concurrency and that's what is the best when the number of locks obtained are lesser at non-required operations. A select doesn't change anything that's why in Oracle, there is no read-level lock.I am not saying about row locks while reading. They are not needed because Undo resolves concurrency.Only in the case of DML where the change is still active and the buffers are dirty. With a DDL, its an implicit commit.
I am asking why Select does not enqueue one, only one lock per object that participates in the Select?Again, my question back to you is, what good you would get from it? What purpose it would solve?
It is not very expensive, I suppose. But it would protect from DDLs that can destroy the Select's result set. You have seen in your system and in my demo(and that's what the the question was on the other thread also) that the result remains intact and its not a behavior from now. Its the same since the time I have started learning Oracle. Can you explain that why you think that the result of select statement would be wrong for a drop table? I believe, its been stated repeatedly that if the select has no requirement to look back the table, it would get completed. Only if the select needs to access the table again, it would fail. So even if we consider your explanation, there is no wrong result shown at all. Once the session encounters that the table is dropped for the statement, the execution stops right away. So where is the destroyed result?
Yes, it is less dangerous when Select does not lock table comparing with what would happen with DMLs in such case (that is why DMLs protect themselves by TM 3), it affects only the Select and its consumer, but still ... I don't understand this Oracle's decision. What is a reasoning behind it?.As I said, to improve concurrency.

Why can I not put a picture from my camera roll into an album now? When I try these are greyed out. I created these albums on my ipad too but ever since I updated to IOS 7 this can't be done, it was so easy before.

I can now answer my own question as I've worked it out. For those who are interested click on Shared Streams then on album you require photo to be in then click on the empty box with a cross in the centre and choose photo you wish to add.

  • Why Can't I put whatever photos I want on my IPAD?

That's it. That is my question. Why can't I put more photos on my ipad from whatever computer I feel like it without having to delete the photos on there? It is incredibly frustrating.

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Why are updated versions of Adobe software (CC Software) not in CLP and TLP agreements?

My company signed a multi-year pricing agreement and incentive program with Adobe called the CLP (http://www.adobe.com/volume-licensing/business.html).
    Then,
Adobe canceled all the SKUs under that agreement and
stopped updating the software in the agreement
So, I have a couple of questions:
Why isn't the current version of software published under the name ‘InCopy’ (for example) included in our CLP agreement?  (You can call it anything you want – like InCopy CC or InCopy CS7 – but it’s still the same ‘updated’ software.)
What prevents adobe from canceling our Creative Cloud Team SKUs, forgoing any future updates to CC, then introducing 'new' pricing and 'new' software (of the same kind) in the future?
    Thanks,

  • Why does my iBookPro drop its WiFi connection so often?

My question: why does my iBookPro drop it WiFi connection so often, and what can I do to prevent it (or at least extend the duration of active connection)?
I have an iBookPro running OSX 10.9.5, with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM.  I think my iBookPro is about 3 or 4 years old.
What seems to happen is that I will use my iBookPro accessing mail & websites for a few minutes, and then when I try to send an e-mail, mail puts up a message that it cannot send mail with the selected server, so I need to either try a different server or try later.  Meanwhile I notice that the WiFi signal indicator shows full service, but when I run diagnostics it shows that the internet is not connected.  Opening the WiFi icon in the top menu bar shows that it is looking for Networks.  After an indeterminate time it finds the network I have had highlighted and logged into (my WiFi -5G router) since I opened my iBook when I arrived at my office.
I often find I have to turn WiFi off, then back on, to get connection with the internet.
What's going on, and what am I missing?

    Hello jBookProAm,
If you are having issues with your MacBook Pro with maintaining a Wi-Fi connection, then take a look at the articles below to get it sorted out. The first article will talk about using Wireless Diagnostics, which you have already done, but also you look at the additional troubleshooting within the article for assistance. You may want to also create a new location as another troubleshooting option and those steps are in the second article.

First of all, I need you to know that I was usung my apple id for four years and I spent nearly 400$ on apps and still had 200$ to spend. Moreover, the total value of id was more than that since I had bought many apps on discount. Anyway, 3 days ago I slept and when I woke up, noticed that my id was blocked for security reasons and that I should reset my password. I did what I was told, however, I was required to enter my recovery key. Now, there begins that huge flaw. I've forgotten it (I know it was my responsibility to remember it). When I click on the "Lost your recovery key?" I'm directed to another page on which it says a lost recovery key can be renewed by signing-in to the account and so on. Interestingly, Apple has blocked my id itself so there is no way to sign-in and get a new recovery key. I called Apple support and talked to them for over an hour. They tried various methods. Nothing worked.
Among things they tried was changing my iforgot.apple.com page in a way to use e-mail authentication or security questions. Unbelievably, the system didn't allow me to use either of options!
I was furious. I remember that I was just yelling at John (Apple support) who was trying to calm me. After wasting one hour and fifteen minutes this was their solution:
"Create new account and ,perhaps, don't use two-step verification again."
The last part hurt the most. I felt dumb. Yes, I was heedless not to properly ssave my recovery key and I accept reprcussions. But, when we hear NSA evesdropping and spying on the Chancellor of Germany, I can't help myself thinking how difficult it can be for Apple to flip the switch and undo what it has done, blocking the account.
So, I spent the rest of day feeling like you know what. I actually created new account and pirated all Apple Mac applications. I know that my feelings for Apple will not be straight again, and that I'm gouing to jailbreak all iDevices I own to exploit poor developers' hardworking. But, this is Apple who should feel ashamed that made such a cumbersome process that even itself can't or doesn't want to bypass it.
    Here are my suggestions:
First: after completion of enabling two-step verification, an email is sent. It would be much better to add the recovey key as an attachment to it. My email was the first place that I looked for it.
Scond: Google's two step verification is more powerful and well-thaought-out. It is bound to your mobile phone and it is much harder to lose your mobile phone than a piece of a paper or a file that your recovery key is on it.
Third: When I asked Apple the reason that caused blocking my account, they said that some A**H**E attempted many times to sign in to it. So, I don't believe blocking my id was a good deterrant and it did more harm than good. Apple blocked my account to protect me but instead it costed me 600$. It would be better to warn me or ask me to change my password than blocking it.
And my question is: Why Apple can't unblock my account when I am its legitimate owner. I just don't get it. Shall I pursue justice in court rooms, or will Apple stop being such a mischeavous pestering child who asks for more cash.
And Steve Jobs said and I quote : "Why join the navy if you can be a pirate?"

Why Apple can't undo its mistake?
Whose mistake? The source of the problem:
I was required to enter my recovery key. Now, there begins that huge flaw. I've forgotten it (I know it was my responsibility to remember it).
If you had just taken the simple steps of storing your recovery key as Apple tells you to when you set it up, none of this would've happened.
As it clearly states in the FAQ on 2-step verification: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570
After you turn it on, there will be no way for anyone to access and manage your account at My Apple ID other than by using your password, verification codes sent your trusted devices, or your Recovery Key. You must be responsible for:
    Remembering your password.
Keeping your trusted devices physically secure.
Keeping your Recovery Key in a safe place.
If you lose access to two of these three items at the same time, you could be locked out of your Apple ID account permanently.
In addition, with two-step verification turned on, only you can reset your password, manage your trusted devices, or create a new recovery key.
Apple Support can help you with other aspects of your service, but they will not be able to update or recover these three things on your behalf.
If you aren't responsible enough to do that, you should not have turned the optional security feature on.
This is your fault, not Apple's.
