Questions about accessing data from old drives

I am trying to access data from a 10-12 yr old IDE drive that I used with a PC way back when. I place it in an enclosure, and when connected, receive a message via Lion (see attached). Anyone have any idea if the drive may work when connected to a modern PC? Did Windows 10-12 years ago use some system that makes drives not recognizable with Macs OR are the drives just likely bad?
Thanks.

Wired is with Ethernet. Connect both with an Ethernet cable

Recently i purchased HP Pavillion 500-242ea ( OS Windows 8.1) as my old pc died.I connected the old hard drive via Usb adaptor kit.The old drive shows up in device manager and file explorer and disk management as F drive but does not show volume. I know the old drive is not full and the drive is working as i can put discs in and they load up.When i click on the old drive-F drive- in file explorer 'Please insert disc' message pops up.Any one know how to access data from old drive which has IDE cable.

Just had to ask, do you know the difference between hard drive and CD/DVD drive?  Don't get angry, read this.
You said " I know the old drive .......... is working as i can put discs in and they load up.When i click on the old drive-F drive- in file explorer 'Please insert disc' message pops up.'
All that implies a CD/DVD drive. You can not put a disc into a hard drive.

  • Question about tranferring data from iPhone 3gs to iPhone 4

I just had a couple quick questions about transferring data from my old phone from my new iPhone 4. The reason i am wondering is because i am worried about whether i will encounter any problems when doing so.
First off i have already sold my phone today, i reset all data and settings from the phone and gave it to my buddy so its gone. I did a full sync and backup yesterday so all the necessary files should be on my computer(windows 7). Now, im basically wondering if i will run into any problems if i restore my iphone 4 from a backup. My 3gs was running 3.1.2 on att. Now i know IDEALLY i would have updated it to iOS 4 before backing it up and used the newest version of itunes, but i did not. Does anyone think this will be a problem for me?
Now with that out of the way, my biggest fear is losing my old data(text messages and notes mainly because i am a pack rat for those type of things) so id like to be SURE that none of my old backups will be deleted in any scenario. The reason i dont just restore it right now is because i want my new phone to be as clutter free as possible. I am going to be putting on here only the apps that i used often and would basically like to transfer over the BARE minimum; texts, notes, and highly used apps... So i guess my main question is can you transfer over only certain things like texts and notes after setting up the phone as a new phone. And if i were to set up the phone as a new phone what would happen to my old backups? Would i be able to selectively restore?
Im afraid that it might not be a possibility to transfer only certain things even though it should be.. i should be able to select a text messages folder and put it on my new phone and be done with it... But anyway i dont want to rant. Can anyone explain to me how this all will work?
ULTIMATE GOAL: Transfer only texts, notes, certain apps(and their data) and NOTHING ELSE.
MOST IMPORTANT THING: Not losing texts and notes. I can deal with putting all the old **** on my new phone and cluttering/slowing it down if i NEED to.
Thank you in advance, sorry for the long post.

If the most important thing for you is keeping old text messages, notes, and voicemail, then you'll need to sync the phone from your existing backup. I know of no other way to access those items.
Once you have synced to the new phone, check that you have those items that were important. Then you can reconnect your phone to iTunes, and change the sync settings to remove the apps or other items you no longer want to keep on the phone.
iPhone backups are stored by iTunes; you can see them by opening your iTunes preferences, clicking on "Devices" and then looking in the window. You can delete old backups from here. I don't know how you can open/read the backups though.
I don't expect you'd have any problems syncing from your old phone's backup, but it's definitely an either/or situation. Since you got rid of the old phone already, it's too late to email yourself your notes, or copy the text messages. Your previous backup is your only solution.

  • Oracle B2B 11g question about pulling data from remote TP sftp server

    Hi,
We would like replace our custom b2b solution with oracle b2b, but without resulting much changes in remote TP side. To do that the following issues are to be resolved.
    1) in the existing custom b2b, host tp is pulling data from remote TP location. How does oracle b2b pull data from remote location using sftp(AS1 1.1)? Oracle document says that by using global listening channel, we can make oracle b2b listen to the sftp server? Is that correct? Is there any sample about how to configure and test it.
    2) For outbound file we would like to preserve the file name. If you use sftp for sending the file out, is it possible to preserve the filename?
    3) Some incoming files which are datafiles , does not have any identification pattern. Is there any other way to identify the document type? For example from which location we are pulling the file can tell us the document type.

Oracle document says that by using global listening channel, we can make oracle b2b listen to the sftp server? Is that correct? Is there any sample about how to configure and test it. I am not sure what do you mean by AS1 1.1 but yes, SFTP is supported in Oracle B2B and if you want to poll a SFTP location, then you need to create a listening channel in Oracle B2B. For creating a listening channel, please refer -
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/integration.1111/e10229/bb_listen_chan.htm#BAJJICJJ
    2) For outbound file we would like to preserve the file name. If you use sftp for sending the file out, is it possible to preserve the filename?Yes, it is possible. There is a setting "Preserve Filename" in transport protocol parameter of a SFTP channel which should be enabled for this purpose.
    3) Some incoming files which are datafiles , does not have any identification pattern. Is there any other way to identify the document type? For example from which location we are pulling the file can tell us the document type. In case of FTP/FILE/SFTP, file name can be used to pass document type and revision information to Oracle B2B. Please refer "Filename format" setting on the above mentioned link.
I figured it out from another thread about how to pull the file. I configured the listening channel so that it reads from a remote server using sftpo protocol. And I have given the filename format as %FROM_PARTY%.dat. I am putting a file like TESTBC.dat. TESTBC is the name of the remote TP. B2B is reading the file but, recognizes the document tupe, but says that FromTP null. What is the solution?
Make sure that TP name is same as what you are giving in filename (cross-check for spelling). You may also try with default naming convention (do not mention anything in Filename format in listening channel configuration) - %FROM_PARTY%_%TIMESTAMP%.dat
    for eg -
    Acme_12345.dat

  • Newbie question about extracting data from events

    HI
i am sure there is a simple solution to this, but I am getting frsutrated  trying to extract useful data from an event:
I have set up and event listner, whatching for CHANGE on a HorizontalList
so far so good, event handler called when a list item is clicked, and the event is passed, but what is the syntax for getting the in particular the columnIndex, which can tantalising be seen as part of the event in debug.
        public function ShowGroupTab(event:Event):void{
                var a:Number =event.target.columnIndex;
    causes this runtime error:
ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property columnIndex not found on mx.controls.HorizontalList and there is no default value.

First it would be better to cast your event in the proper class. In this case the event is a ListEvent. ListEvent extends Event so your code will work but be harder to maintain.
Your problem is that you're trying to access the columnIndex property on the event.target instead of the event itself. The event.target is the component on which the action was performed, here it's a HorizontalList, and the list does not have a columnIndex property.
    Try this :
    public function showGroupTab(event:ListEvent):void{
         var a:int= event.columnIndex;

  • Question about retrieving data from two tables

    Hi everyone.
I've been working on this and was wondering what the correct way of handling this would be.
I have two tables, a Billing Table that contains invoices and related information, and a Payments Table that contains payments and related information to that.
Both tables contain a Date Column for the date that the Invoice was generated or the Payment was made.
I want to get a list of all Invoices and the respective payments if the invoice was generated between two dates OR the payment was made between these two dates.
I can get a list of the invoices and their payments if the invoice was generated between those dates.  I can get a list of the payments if they were made between those dates.  But I can't seem to figure out how to do both.
How do I Join two tables and have it return the data from both tables if either meets the required Date Period?
Here is the SQL that I have so far.  This SQL returns all of the Invoices and Payments IF the Invoice was generated between these two dates (Or updated).
    SELECT Billing.ID AS [BID], Billing.AttachmentName, Billing.BillingType, Billing.Invoice, Billing.Description, Billing.Amount, Billing.DateCreated AS [BillingDate],
    Payments.ID AS [PID], Payments.Type AS PaymentType, Payments.Payment, Payments.PaymentNote, Payments.Reason AS [BillReason], Payments.DateCreated AS [PaymentDate],
    Customers.ID AS [CID], COALESCE(NULLIF(Customers.Company,'') + ' - ','') + Customers.LName + ', ' + Customers.FName AS [Name],
    Jobs.ID AS [JID], Jobs.JobType, Jobs.JobStatus, Jobs.JobStatusDate
FROM Billing LEFT OUTER JOIN Payments ON Payments.BillingID = Billing.ID
RIGHT OUTER JOIN Customers ON Customers.ID = Billing.CustomerID
RIGHT OUTER JOIN Jobs ON Jobs.ID = Billing.JobID
    WHERE
    Billing.BillingType = 'Invoice' AND Billing.PaidInFull = 'No' AND Billing.Collections = 'No' AND Billing.ChargeOff = 'No' AND Billing.Lien = 'No' AND Billing.InvoiceCanceled = 'No'
    AND (Billing.DateCreated >= '1/1/2014' AND Billing.DateCreated <= '8/13/14') OR (Billing.DateUpdated >= '1/1/14' AND Billing.DateUpdated <= '8/13/14')
ORDER BY Name Asc, Billing.Invoice, PID
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
    -Matt-

I don't quite follow your query, but your description leads me to think that you need the set of Billing IDs for bills that were created as defined or that have payments that were created as defined.  From that set of IDs you then simply want all Bills
and their associated payments.  So how do you get that set of IDS?  One way is the union operator:
    with allbill (billID) as (
select ID from dbo.Billings where DateCreated between ...
    union
select BillingID from dbo.Payments where DateCreated between ... )
    select ...
from allbill inner join dbo.Billings as bill on allbill.billID = bill.ID inner join dbo.Payments as pay
    on bill.ID = pay.BillingID
    order by ... ;
Your description leads me to believe that you query is much more complicated, but the basic idea is the union in the CTE - generate one combined set of bill IDs that identify all your bills of interest.  Note that I assumed that a payment cannot exist
    with an associated billing.

  • Question about migrating data from mac pro to new macbook

    Hello all,
I ordered a new macbook today and i'm very excited. It will be the first time i've had two apple machines simultaneously. My question is in regards to getting my new macbook all stocked up with the files and apps currently residing on my mac pro.
    1. I don't know if by using migration assistant if the data is removed from the old machine and added to the new. I don't want that. I want everything currently on my mac pro to remain, unchanged.
    2. I'd normally use target disk mode, but no firewire on the macbook, so, no dice there.
    3. My startup disk and apps and such reside on one HDD in my mac pro, while my home folder, or user files, or whatever, reside on a separate HDD. will this cause a problem.
    Your input is much appreciated.

It can be done with USB, but it is slower and less reliable.
Ethernet works great, IF you have two FUNCTIONAL machines. The great thing about Firewire Target Disk mode was that if the HD/OS was corrupted, or the computer was for some reason unbootable you could still get data off of it quickly, without tools or special equipment. Firewire Target disk mode has saved my rear several times on every machine I have owned.
The hard drive is fairly easy to remove on the aluminum Macbook. I would remove it and install it in an external Firewire enclosure temporarily to transfer your files quickly and reliably, then put the drive back in the Macbook.
Firewire allows two operating modes. One is asynchronous, like USB which suffers from latency, bus contention and collisions.
The other is isochronous mode, and it lets a device carve out a certain dedicated amount of bandwidth that other devices can't touch. It gets a certain number of time slices each second all its own. The advantages for audio/video should be obvious: that stream of data can just keep on flowing, and as long as there isn't more bandwidth demand than the wire can handle, nothing will interfere with it. No collisions, no glitches.

  • My MBA is being shipped, question about transferring files from old PB

    Hey guys,
I just ordered a new 13" MBA and am anxiously awaiting for it to arrive... I currently have a 12" Powerbook G4 with 10.5.8 that I use an external drive to back up with time machine.
My question is this; when I get my MBA will I be able to use the time machine back up to migrate my files even though my old computer has an older version of Mac OS on it?

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.

If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.

  • Question about transferring data from 3GS to iPhone 5

I upgraded from 3GS to iPhone 5.  Before reading any articles on transferring data through iTunes, I configured my 3 email programs, contacts and calendar (Google).  The Apple instuctions state that I should backup 3GS FIRST, then restore to iPhone 5.  Question is, if I do the backup and restore AFTER having configured my mail programs, will that cause problems, such as creating duplicate accounts and contacts?  I am especially concerned about creating duplicates in my contact list, which would be a semi-horror if I had to delete every other one of over 1,700 names.  Perhaps I should delete my email accounts and contact list BEFORE restoring to my iPhone 5, basically start from scratch?

When restoring the device, whatever is currently setup on the device is irrelevant.  Everything currently setup on the device will be erased.

  • Some questions about accessing Oracle from another machine with OEM

I followed this great tutorial on how to get oracle8i installed and working on rh6.2. http://jordan.fortwayne.com/oracle/
    Great job to the writer)))
Know I need a little more info on where to go after it is up and running...
I downloaded the client for NT and I would like to access the Linux box using OEM from a Win2000 laptop however I really have no clue what I am doing and how to make this happen can someone please point me to a tutorial simular to the install tutorial I found?
    Thanks
    [email protected]

You need to install OEM on your Windows box. From there go to your OEM configuration assistant in the start menu. Run it and point it to one of your instances on your DB server. You must provide a user name and password for the DB it will then connect and build a repository for OEM. After that run the OEM console application and connect to OEM using sysman for your login and oem_temp as your password. This should get you going.

  • How to Access DATA, Physical Flash Drive from Host machine

    Hello Everyone,
First i am sorry for My English also if i post wrong place.
In HyperV, I created 3 VM machines, and i want each machines can access to Data or Flash Drive from Host machine.

    Hi,
    The Hyper-V forum is here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?forum=winserverhyperv
But, your question is relatively simple.  You will need to use standard Windows networking to access data from the host machine.  Depending on your version of Hyper-V, connecting to it via RDP from the host machine can use the RDP client's ability
to access the host drives also.

What version of word do you have? The TS3938 sounds like it's a PowerPC app- written for an old architecture that is no longer supported in Lion. If this is the case, your files are fine- you just need a newer version of word that will run in Lion in order to open them. The newest version (2011) should be readily available anywhere, and has worked fine for me ever since I switched to Lion on release day....

  • How to transfer icloud data from old computer to new computer

how to transfer icloud data from old computer to new computer

The iCloud data will be on the new computer as soon as you download the iCloud control panel and sign into iCloud with your iCloud ID. What you see in iCloud is stored in iCloud, so it really doesn't matter what computer you are on. Once that computer is signed onto iCloud and the iCloud options are selected, you have full access to all of that information, and much of it is pushed back to your computer.
If you are referring to the data in an iCloud backup created by an iOS device, then that is not something that would be on a computer at all.
Does that answer your question? If not, post back with more info about what you are looking to find out.

  • APEX Application accessing data from two different databases

    Hi All,
Currently as we all know that APEX Application resides in database and is connected to the schema of that database.
I want APEX Application to be running and accessing data from two different databases. Elaborating my question,
Currently, my APEX Production Application is connected with XXXX Schema of DB1 Database(Where APEX Resides). Now I want to add some pages into this APEX Application for REPORT Purpose, But I want to connect this REPORT APEX Pages to get data from Different Schema YYYY for Database DB2.
Is it possible to configure this scenario?
The reason for doing this is to avoid the REPORT related (adhoc queries) resource utilization effect on Production DB1 Database.
    Thanks
    Nil

    1. If you do the joining of two or more tables in DB1 then all data is pulled over to DB1 and then the join is executed: so more data over the databaselink and more work for DB1. Better keep the joining stuff where the data resides and just pull exactly that data over that you need.
    2. Don't know about your different block sizes. Seems a nice question for one of the other forums (DBA or SQL).
    3. I mean create synonyms on DB1 for reports VIEWS in DB2.
    Hope all is clear!
