Questions about different issues on a Satellite A30

Ok, to start, I don't know much about computers let alone laptops but my husband is "usually" good with them but right now we are having major problems.
I have a Satellite A30 (not sure if it's a pro as it doesn't mention it in the manual and Stephen is about to have a heart attack right now and isn't on the laptop so can't check the BIOS).
Anyway. Problems started quite some time ago, in fact not long after the warranty ran out. I bought it second hand and I loved it when I got it.
Ok
Problem 1. - Overheating, we finally solved that by hoovering it out every now and then, problem solved.
Problem 2. - USB 2.0. Some things work some don't. My Nikon camera won't work via USB but my Lumix does. My mobile struggles. Just bought a card reader, worked on Stephen's laptop but not the A30. Bluetooth dongle doesn't work. All these items used to work.
Problem 3. - I can set my processor speed to either 1.6GHz or 3.06GHz. Overheats really easily on 3.06 and tends to slow down and seems to be faster on 1.6GHz and doesn't overheat on 1.6 so end up keeping it on that. Pain though. Even with extra under laptop fan cooler base.
Problem 4. - Not that I'm an expert but I think my power supply is gone. I always have my laptop plugged in about 90% of the time. I can put the laptop on and it will use the AC Adaptor for a while then goes on to Battery Power. If the AC Adaptor was in that was what it used, not the battery. Then when the battery gets to the end of it's power it just goes and I have to wait until it charges again before I can turn it back on. I find that really annoying.
Problem 5. - As from 2 days ago it has went totally and utterly kaput. Won't even log on. It goes as far as Windows XP booting up then an error message saying something about a missing .DLL file. Stephen said he sorted that but hasn't resolved the problem. We decided it was a hard drive problem so bought an external case for it and Stephen after 2 whole days managed to upload everything from the HDD to his laptop. It was a 40gig HDD. Some of the files were warped and had to be deleted so thought that was the problem so went out to buy a new one but went for a 120gig. Stephen formatted that on his laptop then went to transfer it to my A30 but same problems. Now I am wondering if 120Gig is too much. At the mo Stephen is taking out his HDD to put in mine and vice versa. His laptop is recognising it as a 120GHz but according to him my BIOS is not very clear and doesn't tell you anything. As I said I know nothing about computers. I'm really clutching at straws here. Stephen has been brought up on computers but is more used to desktops and we decided to sell our laptops and buy a high spec up to date desktop but I doubt I'd get much money now for my A30 if it doesn't work.
Any ideas would be sooooo helpful to get it rolling again.
Sorry for this thread to be so long but although Stephen won't admit to it, he really needs help and I can try and give any info you need to help us out.
BTW I read in my manual that it can take up to 80Gig HDD but larger ones in the future so we thought it would be fine with 120 by now since they are available if that is any help to you.

Hi there,
do you have still warranty on that machine? If yes then bring it TOMORROW to an authorized service partner.
Why? The problem is that this machine has an Pentium 4 which really gets hot and if the cooling system is clobbed with dust, then the cooling paste which transfers the heat between cpu and cooling module gets dry and cannot transfer the heat accurately to the copper cooling module.
I would suggest you to go to an technician and advise him to exchange the cooling paste, it will really raise your system stability.
Believe me. :)
The other thing with USB is: sometimes there is no enough power in the system and I assume that the problem lies on the AC-adapter. Purchase an new AC-adapter and you probably wont have problems with stability, USB and some other things anymore. I cannot tell it for sure, but I solved a problem with a Satellite 2430 which I had and which is quite the same model like yours, it has just some other colors but the model is the same.
I had that heat problem and I solved it by exchanging the cooling paste, but then the machine was not in warranty anymore and I am a little bit familiar with computers.
I had problems with my AC too, but my error was another because it mades some noise and after a while it stops working. At this time the system did not worked properly and after exchanging the AC everything was fine again.
Regarding the HDD: I cannot tell you something about since I am using just a 60GB drive. You will probably find it our on your own or a experienced user here in the forum could maybe help you.
I wish you good luck with your machine and a nice weekend

  • Some question about Toshiab reocvery disk for Satellite P300-133

    Hello guys ,
I got some questions about unpleasant recovery surprises :
*1)* I just made recovery DVD using Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator and it initially asked for 2 DVDs - but when the first one was done it didn`t require a second blanc DVD . Is it possible all system files of Windows Vista to be written on 1 DVD ?
*2)* Could I reinstall Windows Vista using the HDD Recovery option ( by pressing F8 ) without using recovery DVD ?
*3)* Which HDD partitions`ll be formatted ( just system C: or both C: and E: ) using HDD recovery ?
*4)* What is recovery DVD - Image of the hard drives or Vista installation files ?
Its pretty bad idea not to include OS on DVD when I have paid for it.
Thanks for all the problems to Toshiba :(

    1. I think the recovery disk creator means 2 CDs. I have a Portege M700 with Windows Vista and one DVD too. I recovered it and after this I have a clean Vista installation with all drivers and tools from Toshiba. Nothing is missing.
    2. Yes, you can reinstall Vista using the HDD Recovery option when you press F8 at startup. You dont need the recovery DVD but you should create one when your HDD get some errors or something else. If you need a new Recovery DVD, you have pay for one.
    3. The complete HDD and partitions will be formatted, so backup your data first on a DVD, external HDD, USB stick or something else.
After the reinstallation you have the factory settings.
    4. The recovery DVD is an image of the HDD about the factory settings. If you make a recovery, there are all drivers and tools already installed. Of course on the disk are the installations files of Vista, but you can only use this DVD on your Satellite P300. The disk can not be used on an other Satellite or on a PC.
When you have more questions, have a look in the user manual. There are a many in formations about the recovery. Its in chapter 3.

  • Satellite 2410: Question about different ways to use BlueTooth

    Hi,
I'm having trouble finding somewhere to purchase a bluetooth module for my Toshiba Satellite 2410 - the handbook says I can, and I know there is space on the underside of the laptop to insert it.
I just can't seem to find one to buy - does anybody know if they actually exist, as I am beginning to think not??!...or is the cheapest way to bluetooth enable the laptop to buy a USB adaptor?
If so, will a cheap one affect the download rate when using the Internet?? And what is the difference between an SD card and a USB bluetooth adaptor?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, with the detailed name I mean the full notebook number Satellite 2410-xxx.
However, you ask what a difference between Wireless Lan and Bluetooth.
The WLan is technology which allows you using or/and to create a LAN but without the cables.
;) The Wlan routers for example allow you to connect to the internet without the cable connection.
    Bluetooth technology:
If device like (mobile phones, printer, etc) support BT technology and you notebook uses also a BT so it's possible to connect these devices without cables. The devices should be placed in the available range.
I would recommend searching a little bit in the internet for more information about Wlan and Bluetooth

  • A few questions about common "issues" before buying New iPad

I am hoping to pick up the new iPad in the next few weeks, however I have read up on some issues which I'd like some information on.
I have been using my GF's iPad 2 a lot and I really love it, however I am dead set on buying the new one, I have become pretty resolution-spoilt by the awesome screen on the 4S and this is the primary factor in wanting this new model.
With the following concerns, assuming that an iPad that I may buy might have one or more of them, could you please inform me of: any currently known official or unofficial fix, if the problem could most likely be resolved in an update or if it is likely that since the problem came to light that the later runs to be built were adjusted to avoid the problem? Thanks.
OK- first up, the bad wifi problem that people have. This is the biggest concern to me, as I use wifi a lot and won't have access to 4G, and only occasionaly access to 3G.
Secondly, the heating... OK this is not a deal breaker, I understand that it isn't a real problem however if it could be solved so that it runs almost as cool as the 2 that would be great.
Thirdly, charge times and the extra hour over 100%... Again I do realise that these aren't so much issues as just the way that it works, however I would hope that now lots of people have complained, an update would adjust the display to be more accurate, to say 100% only when it has fully charged, purely because I would rather know... Or perhaps have 100% change colour on absolute 100%. The other thing, 7 hours charging, is there a more powerful adaptor that 1: reduces the charge time, and 2: if you are using a powerdrinking app while charging, will actualy continue charging rather than just slowing the battery drain (I read that some apps will keep draining battery while on charge).
finaly, I have read about screen hue problems, this wont be too much of a problem, as I will be able to check this in store to be sure that the screen is nice, colour balanced and free of dead pixels, I will compare it to my GFs iPad 2 and also the iPhone 4, because I know that the iPad 2 is supposed to look a little more blue to give it a cold feel, while the new model and the iPhone 4S have a slightly yellowed screen for warmth, it's just that lots of people have complained about theres' being too yellow.
Thanks very much for any useful info on this.

A lot of the posts about lack of charging is because iPad "3" users are trying to use an iPod charger, iPhone charger or connected to their computer where they get the "Not Charging" indication. A few others had a defective charger that was replaced by Apple. It remotely possible that a few iPads have defective batteries or charging circuits.
Many of the wifi connection problems are related to the users brand of wireless routers, the router setup, or the need to select a different wireless channel due to interference.
The high temp problem seems to be when users are charging AND running games with intensive graphics. The display on the new iPad takes a lot more power than the iPad 2 display.
Overall I would guess that the chance of a defective iPad is less than 1%.

  • OSD: different pxe, question about different wim-files

    Hi,
Please see this question, I'm somewhat confused about the different
    wim files.
I can see the default winpe.wim and a different wim next to it which has name winpe then environment then number (winpe.sccm0022.wim), what is this file.
And, like in my post, why can't I use this image to import into a pxe and boot from that?
    Please advise.
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

    Hi,
What is your goal with this? boot to SCCM and do OS deployment or what is your purpose? when dowloading the boot .wim file from a DP parameters are passed along like MP and so on. So you cannot use that .WIM file and pxe-boot from another PXE solution and
    do OSD from ConfigMgr.
That is why Johan's unsupported solution would be the way to try it.

  • Question about HDD-upgrade on a Satellite A10

Hello, just wanted to update my laptop, and just interesting. Is this laptop supporting 160 gb ?
Maybe even, what the biggest HDD support this computer ?
Because i am thinking on 120gb or better 160gb... And dunno what to do :)
    Satellite A10...
    Thanks for any advices

    Hey there,
I think you should try it, because I think that machine was shipped with a maximum of 80GB, but I am not sure. You have the following options:
    1. Buy a HDD with about 120GB. Test it, you cannot damage anything. If the drive would not be recognized then bring it back to the shop and try a HDD with less memory (100GB). Repeat the procedure, if the drive was recognized, hold it. :)
    2. Buy a 80GB HDD, which is known to work in that machine. Thats the "secure" way.
    3. Do nothing and buy a external USB-HDD. ;)
I hope I could give you some thoughts on your way.

  • Question about security issues regarding 'cp' and 'mv'

Ok, I wondered about how 'cp' and 'mv' are really working. I have some guesses but I need these things to be confirmed.
    Here is what I have:
A partition with a unix file system, say ext2 or 3 (does this make a difference here?) containing *very* sensitive data. The filesystem is encrypted (whirlpool/serpent) but that shouldn't matter. As I do not want corpses of dead files lying around that could be recovered, I always use 'shred -zu' with 26 passes to overwrite and then delete the data.
And that's where I have my conceirns:
If I want to rename a file or move it to another folder on the same partition. Is it save to 'mv' it? Or should I 'cp' it and then 'shred' the original file. I assume that 'mv' will not touch the actual file and just tell the file system of it's new name or place in the folder-structure. Given that, shredding a 'mv'ed file should not leave a trace of it on the drive (except of the old filename before the 'mv' maybe, but that wouldn't be too critical). I assume that, because it's the only thing that would make sense to me, but have to know it for sure!
However, on moving the file to another drive I should probably 'cp' it, then 'shred' the original file. The question I have here is as follows:
How much information which could be recovered leaves 'cp'ing in my RAM? Will I have to find a way to somehow shred the information in the RAM or can I assume that my RAM get's rewritten often enough, that most traces will be gone, say, in a couple of days?
If you have links at hand to confirm your answer, please post them, too.

Okay, thanks for that, I will have a closer look on flushing the ram.
Sure, I care about security and privacy, but -- as you might expect -- the data I have are not really THAT sensitive/confidential/whatsoever. I've just gotten into it somehow and now I'm just curious/intrested in improving it for it's own sake more or less.

  • Question about different query results with wildcard

Hi, I'm working with a third party app on SQL Server 2000, and from what I can gather, programmed in C# & VisualFoxPro.
    When we search with
        Note contains 94949
we get 571 results, when we search with
        Note contains 94949*
    we get 575 results.
There should be at least a hundred different entries that start with "94949-1" so I expected the query with the wildcard to return something like 680 results, not an additional four rows.
    Searching with
        Note contains 94949-1*
    got 483 results
        Note contains 94949-10*
    got 0 results
Could someone explain or point me to more documentation on the difference results we get?
    Thanks

Hi Arnie, thanks for your response.
My situation is more basic than what appears in your example. Unfortunately, I am working solely through this application so I do not have access to the SQL to test out what you supplied, so my question is more of a need for an explanation of the search results. I do find lots of references to LIKE, Wildcards and pattern matching, but I don't find a way to explain to the users the best and most complete way to search. They mostly need a "this will always get us the results without missing anything" search technique and then to be able to select from a smaller group. I guess I need a basic course in understanding search results: how to get different ones and what they mean.
    Using
            Note contains 94949-'%'
returned one more result than when using an asterisk. I don't understand this difference.
            Note contains 94949-'%1'   or
            Note contains 94949-'1%'
brings nothing nor does not using quotes. But there are hundreds of records which have the string starting with 94949-1 and a varying number of characters after that.
?Does the dash read not as a character in the string but as an expression?
When I use WITHIN 3 characters, I get too few results (eight). If I use AND, I get text unrelated to the account number I am looking for.
Again when I tried to narrow the search by adding one digit to the string to be matched, I did not get any results, but 500 results from the more general search is too much to scan by opening individual records.
Thanks for pondering this with me.

  • Questions about recovery discs and partitioning Satellite A200-QH0

I bought a Satellite A200-QH0 model in Australia and due to lack of forums in our country I'd like to ask some questions here if that's ok.
The notebook contains 3 partitions - a 1.6GB "EISA Configuration" partition, the large OS partition, and the recovery partition. So I've made the recovery DVD??s using the Recovery Disc Creator tool as we aren't supplied with an actual disc. But I would like to know what these discs will do? My questions:
    1. Will they truly return the hard drive back to _exactly_ how it was including the partition layout and pre-installed software?
    2. Will the recovery DVDs work even if the drive has been repartioned? I would like to split the system partition to give space for data files etc. But will this extra partition stop the recovery procedure working properly?
Please understand that I'm not interested in reformatting the entire drive. I just want to split the OS partition. But in case I have to replace the drive in the future or something I'd like to know how close to "original" these discs will get me, no matter what I do to the drive?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi
Im not 100% sure how the recovery works on the Toshiba Australian notebooks but I presume the Recovery CD contains the Toshiba image with the Windows OS, drivers, tools and utilities.
I think if you would use the Recovery CD then the whole HDD will be formatted and all partitions will be erased.
I think the recovery partition will be not created using the recovery CD because the recovery CD was already created so the recovery partition is not necessary anymore

  • Question about speed issues using JSP/JavaBeans/JRun & SQL Server

Hi. I am a developer for a small software company. About 2 years ago we started development on an E-Commerce platform written in Java. It has administrative tools that are actual applications and also web admins that are jsp pages.
Every JSP page we have calls java beans, and these java beans then pull information from or put information into our database.
Our database is SQL server 7.0 and is a relational DB. So, for instance, we have about 100 items, with 15 features each, 3 images, and so its a pretty small database, but it has quite a few rows.
Now, to pull information straight from our database and spit it out on a jsp page, it takes about 2 seconds, to put information into the database (saving a survey), it takes about 5-10 seconds. To me, this seems like a VERY long time just for a page to load. We have about 7 websites all running on the same server with different instances of JRun 3.0, and that same server is running SQL Server and IIS 5.0.
Now, without posting our thousands of lines of code, can anyone help me try to figure out where our bottleneck might possibly be? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Anyone that has done something similar, what was your database access time and what did you use to display your pages? (Jrun with IIS or what)
I'm the last person here (everyone else jumped ship and I wasn't here for the design aspect of this project) and before we bring in a consultant to try to work on this, I was hoping that some of you here could share your insight on any similar projects you may have worked on.
    Thank you very much.

Make sure that your JDBC code is using connection pooling. You would know this since you would have to set up a DataSource in the JMC.
Then instead of going through the DriverManager, you would get your Connection from the DataSource object via the InitialContext object.
If you're already using Connection pooling, verify that the SQL statements are as efficient as possible. That is, make sure they are using indexes in the DBMS. The SQL tracer tool can show any bad performing SQL.
Lastly, re-index any tables if they are not reindexed on a regular basis. How often you re-index will depend on how often the data changes.
    Good luck ...

  • Question about security issue when transferring files from PC

I am in the process of looking at macs. I have always been a PC user and have been EXTREMELY impressed with the features of mac os x. Here's the question. I am probably sure that I have one or more viruses on my PC, what PC doesn't right? When I get my mac, I'm looking at the macbook, I see that I can transfer my files over from a PC to my new mac. The problem is. I want my files, but I'm leery about transferring a virus over also. I've heard about the security of macs and I am wondering if this is something I need to be worried about, or if it won't be a problem. Is there any steps I will need to take to ensure that I don't bring any viruses over with my files? Thanks for the help.
    Micah
P.S. I am really starting to get sick and tired of Vista. I had to download VLC media player to play my Windows Media files because my Windows Media player on Vista WILL NOT play the files meant for that system. Arrrghhh Sorry for the vent.

Be sure to scan all your files for viruses before moving them from the PC to the Mac. Although PC viruses should have no effect on a Mac, it's still possible to pass on a virus to a friend via email.
Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

I want to purchase some internal memory for my A200 Satellite Pro Mod No,PSAE1E but I cannot find my model in the drop down lists, which memory do I need, I want to upgrade using two 1GB memory sticks, at present I have two 512MB sticks installed.

    Hi
    The compatible modules are: *DDR2 667MHz (PC2-5300) 200-PIN SODIMM*
As far as I know all notebooks from the A200 series can be upgraded up to *2GB* .
This means that one memory slot would support max 1GB RAM module.
As the previous user already said, the Kingston modules are not bad.
I use it in my notebook too and till now the modules are ok.

  • Question about Ram upgrade on a Satellite A200

    hi friends,
i`ve a Satellite A200-13O with 120GB HDD, 1.8GHz Intel Centrino Duo, 1GB ram but it has 2 512 chips installed.
if i upgrad 2 1 GB ram is there any chance of improvement in performance....??
and what if i upgrade to 2GB dual channel....??
    it has Windows Vista Ultimate...!!
    Thanks,
    Nagal

You mean you would use only one 1GB ram module?
Well, you would still have 1GB RAM but the dual channel cannot be used due to missing of second module.
So if you can, try to use exactly the same 2 modules to get the best memory performance.
The notebook supports two memory slots therefore you cannot do anything wrong insert 2 modules into the 2 slots to run the modules in dual channel
