Questions about EJB local interfaces - 9iAS 9.03
Intro: I am new in developing EJB, and I am trying to build an example to verify that a stateless session bean with local interfaces is quite efficient.
Q1: I have read that an application trying to access local interfaces of an EJB must run into the same JVM. Does it means that it should be deployed into the same OC4J instance as the servlet?
Q2: I am using JDev 10g to build the EJB, with local and remote interfaces. Using the internal OC4J container, I can use the remote interfaces but not the internal one: an object of class "_Proxy1" is returned after the lookup (with the same name as given for the remote interface related call). Is it possible to access the local interface?
Q3: My application architecture is already defined to split the business logic in two EJBs: one stateless session bean for volatile data and one entity bean for a global user list cache. Where can I find a working example (with source code, please) to be deployed on 9iAS that can validate my design?
Q4: In many places, I read that CMP entity bean are easier to develop than BMP one. Is there any special consideration I should be aware of before implementing a CMP for my global user list cache?

Creating a simple java client for a session EJB local interface

Is it possible to create a simple java client for a session ejb local interface with JDeveloper.
The problem is that it creates a test client for a remote interface only...
i.e.
MySessionEJB sessionEJB = context.lookup("MySessionEJB")
and once i try to adjust it manually for the local interface...
MySessionEJBLocal sessionEJB = (MySessionEJBLocal) context.lookup("MySessionEJBLocal") (MySessionEJBLocal - is the name of my local interface)
it generates the exception:
javax.naming.NotFoundException: SessionEJBLocal not found
at...........................(RMIClientContext.java:52)
There is still no problem with accessing the local interface object from the jsf project where i've added <ejb-local-ref> tag into the web.xml file.
but i need the possibility of testing the simple java client for the local interface to test business methods wich should return objects without indirect properties

I still dont understand what is wrong with my example.
The first peace of the code i wrote (getting the reference to the remote interface object) works pretty well, and even more it is produced automatically by JDeveloper, so why we cant get a reference to the local interface object the same way?
Certanly we should use the local interface for getting access to the resource functioning under the same local jvm and i think it doesnt metter wich app server we really use wls or oas or others

Question about /usr/local/bin in Mavericks ...
I just did a clean install of Mavericks on a 2010 MacPro. I understand Mavericks does not replicate this path (/usr/local/bin) when doing a clean install. Prior to this I was running 10.7.xx and I had a few compiled binaries installed in the bin folder. How do I address this? Can I simply recreate the path manually without risk?

So why would you expect /usr/local/bin to be there? If you install custom, low-level software like this on one system, it will not get migrated to the new system.
As I stated in my original post I did not expect it to be there. All I'm asking is how do I adreess the issue? Do I recreate it manually without any risk of screwing something up? -
Does OAS9i(oc4j) support EJB Local interface?

As far as I know, OC4J only partially implements EJB 2.0 -- it
doesn't implement local interfaces. However, there are several,
different versions available. Which version are you using?
If you haven't already found it, there is a version of the pet
store application available for download from:
http://technet.oracle.com/sample_code/tech/java/oc4j/content.html
but it's an implementation of the 1.1.2 version.

A few questions about the FCE interface
I'm new at FCE, but I've done video editing for a few years in Windows (Vegas Movie Studio mostly, it was pretty good but limited in the number of video and audio tracks). I've finally made the jump to Mac and I'm excited getting started. The ability to do keyframes and motion is outstanding and I can't wait to play with LiveType and Soundtrack.
There's a few things I'm not sure I understand about the FCE interface. I'm working on my first project and it's going to me mostly made up of short (4-10 second) video clips and still photos (with pan and zoom and some motion) and background music. I've done several of these in the past in other software, this project is my learning one for FCE.
However, I can't understand why some things happen they way they do. If I drag a clip or still from the bin to somewhere in the middle of my existing sequence where there are no items on the video track, it 'parts the seas', moving all video on all tracks to the right and cuts my audio track wide open leaving a huge gap to make room for the clip or still even if it has no audio. The same thing happens in reverse if I'm deleting a still or clip, it chops it out and scoots everything over. I think I want to manage my own gaps rather than FCE trying to manage it for me. Does this have something to do with ripple editing - something that I must not have learned in my Windows video editing experience?
I've ordered a few tutorial books based on recommendations in this forum, they're on their way. I didn't expect to be immediately proficient, but it seems I'm not understanding something fundamental about the interface.
There's other questions too, like when I move a video clip from one track to another (up or down, not left or right), why does it move the audio portion of that clip to another audio track? Sometimes it stomps on something I already had on that track. Can't I unlink those somehow?
When I bring two clips or stills together and attempt to overlap them (which I think should mean I'm doing some type of transition), it seems to just truncate one or the other. I suppose I just need to get used to that?

iMac 20" intel Mac OS X (10.4.10)You need to get comfortable with targeting your tracks and, as mentioned, locking off tracks you don't want to affect.
You say you want to add a clip/still to the "middle" of a sequence ... I take it there are clips to either side of this spot that you don't want to affect. Then I would set In and Out (I and O) points in the timeline to define the space you want the clip to occupy. If you don't want audio to carry over, then lock off whatever audio tracks you have edited. Then do an Overwrite by either dragging the clip to the far right of the screen to get the Overwrite pop up or by using the F10 key.
The Delete key to the right of your keyboard (sometimes under the help key) does a ripple delete. The Delete key under the number keys (sometimes a backspace key) removes a highlighted portion of video without rippling the timeline.
If you lay in a new clip with audio and don't want to affect an existing track, target a separate set .. so if you have a clip on V1 with its audio on A1/A2 and you want to overwrite the video but add new audio, target V1 and A3/A4.
As to overlapping clips .. if you want to use transitions, overwrite your first clip. Overwrite the second right up against it .. don't try to overlap. Now select your transition and drop it down between the two clips. NOTE: FCE needs handles ... like about a spare 15 frames of info on both clips
I strongly reccomend Tom Wolsky's book on FCE. It has tutorials and is a great way to start. I've never used Vegas but FCE is a very deep program ... it takes time, practise and patience (and you online manual is a great resource too) -
EJB Local Interfaces / javax.naming.NamingException

I have tried to deploy a very simple (Hello World like)EJB-Application. It contains a simple stateless SessionBean (with local interfaces) and a JSP which is using the EJB.
Opening the JSP i get the following error message:
javax.naming.NamingException: Error instantiating web-app JNDI-context: No location specified and no suitable instance found for the ejb-local-ref 'ejb/TesterEJB', an EJB matching it's ejb-link 'ejb-jar-ic.jar#TesterEJB' was found, but it contained an Entity, not a Session

My understanding is that the concept of local interfaces (i.e.
direct invocation in lieu of an IPC) exist in EJB 2.0. Does
OC4J support this today? If not, will there be support for it
in 9i AS 2.0?
Thanks.oc4j/orion supports ejb 2.0 as it stood in the second draft.
There have been many changes since then, including dropping DO's
and using Local Interfaces instead.
OC4J/Orion will have a new version by the end of this year or
early next year which will implement ejb 2.0.
Until then, if you want the speed you would get with local
interfaces in oc4j/orion, you can modify your orion-ejb-jar.xml
to use copy-by-value="false". This will give you the same
performance gain as using local interfaces. Its a hack, but what
the heck, it works.

Is there support for ejb local interface?
Hi,
Is there support for ejb local intefaces in JDev? By default it creates remote interfaces
& I have to manually edit the interfaces as well as the ejb-jar.xml files.
I am using JDev 9.0.2.

DipankarRight. The aforementioned -migrate flag on the jdev or jdevw command line will migrate the IDE settings from your previous build.
Other upgrade issues are handled automatically the first time you open a project and save it with the new version. -
Using EJB Local Interface problem

I have got a problem in using Local EJB Interface in Weblogic , please attention to my description
I use JDeveloper as IDE
At first I create an Application in JDeveloper that has two projects that their names are Model and ViewContorller that first one contains my EJB and another contains my JSP page respectively
The EJB code is :

and I deploy the ViewContorller project to a WAR file that its name is AliEE1WebApp.war
Now I add this tags to web.xml

Ultimately the JSP can calls the EJB through Local Interface and use the Hi method and shows me the result but JDeveloper while compiles the application give me these Warnings :

I have to define my EJB in ejb-jar.xml like this

Does JDev 9.0.3 support EJB Local Interfaces?
Hi everyone, we are very interested in using local interfaces for our EJB's to set up and use a standard set of server beans that will run in each server. I did not see any reference to local interfaces in any of the release notes on version 9.0.3.
Does anyone know? And if not, does anyone know when they might be supported?

How will be the weblogic-ejb-jar and ejb-jar xml for EJB Local Interface?

I have one ear application which is using Stateless Session Beans. I don't have any Bean to Bean communication . At present, the client is invoking remote methods thro Home/Remote interfaces. My doubt is , shall I implement EJBLocal home/ local interface to obtain this same functionality cos, in this app, both client and EJb bean have been deployed in same JVM. Can Local interfaces only be applicable to Bean - Bean relation ship?If LocalHome/Local interfaces can be implemented in my scenario, then may I know how will be the ejb-jar.xml and weblogic-ejb-jar.xml?

Venkat.Local interfaces are for communication between ejbs and their clients when both are in the same JVM. The clients can be normal clients, jsps, servlets, and other ejbs. If the client is not in the same JVM you cannot use local interfaces even though your client is another ejb.
Advantage of using local interface is it reduces the network overhead.

Question about EJB and thread safe coding - asking again!
sorry everyone, no one seems to be interested in helping me on this, so i post it again.
i have a question about the EJB and thread safe coding. when we build EJBs, do we need to worry about thread safe issue? i know that EJBs are single threaded, and the container manages the thread for us. maybe i am wrong about this. if i wasnot, how can we program the EJB so that two or more instance of EJB are not going to have deadlock problem when accessing data resources. do we need to put syncronization in ours beans, do we even need to worry about creating a thread safe EJB? thanks in advance. the question really bothers me a lot lately.sorry everyone, no one seems to be interested in

I encountered an interesting situation about EJB timer service.
1) For example, I created an implementing TimerObject Stateless Session Bean.
2) In ejbSetSessionContext method I created an timer to invoke ejbTimeout on my EJB every 15 seconds.
3) Ok. Container invokes this ejbTimeout every 15 sec. But what happens is previous ejbTimeout didn't returned because it is waiting for some connection for example. Would container invoke ejbTimeout while processing previous ejbTimeout on this one Stateless EJB?

This isn't specifically mentioned in the spec because the design center of the Timer Service was not fine-grained events. The spec suggests that typical timeouts would be on the order of minutes or hours, which is typically much longer than the duration of the handling time within a timeout method or business method. In SUN's implementation we do not attempt to deliver a subsequent periodic timeout until the previous timeout completes successfully.

Returning cloned objects from EJB Local Interfaces
We'd like to let our WAS 5/J2EE container manage our transactions/unit of work. However, we don't want to have our objects serialized, so we intend to use LocalInterfaces. Additionally, we want to return value objects that support Toplink indirection such that we are not returning the actual cache object but instead a clone.Our question is, how do we return a cloned object that supports indirection from Toplink that we can later do a deepMergeClone on in an explicit update method?
Additional Information on the first post:
The pattern we've been testing is as follows:
1. We set up LocalInterfaces on our EJB's
2. The EJB Getters are using acquireNonSynchronizedUnitOfWork() to get a NON-JTS transaction to perform a readQuery. This results in a Cloned Bis object being generated. We then release the UOW and return the object.
3. The Returned Biz object Getters are using Indirection (probably using the released non-synchronized UOW).
4. The pattern for UPDATE is that we allow the Web Container code (servlet) to change the Cloned Biz Object, they then submit the CLONED and changed object to an EJB update() method where we use getClientSession().getActiveUnitOfWork() to link to the JTS transaction and perform a uow.deepMergeClone(bizObjectClone);
We are trying to use the pattern for the following reasons:
1. Isolation of the Cache to upper layers
2. Transaction Boundry is the EJB Container
3. We understand that there is a performance overhead with CLoned Biz Objects but this more mirrors the ValueObject Pattern then anything else we've tried.
BIG Question:
1. Is this a supported TopLink Pattern?
2. If its not supported, can it be?
3. Do you have any other suggested patterns?
