Questions about free personal or home edition of Oracle

I am considereing downloading the personal edition of Oracle for home use (mostly just learning Oracle) but I have some questions and concerns. Maybe someone could answer some of them.
1) Will it take up a lot of resources and bog down my computer? I have XP Pro with 512M Memory and plenty of disk space with a 1.8 Ghz AMD processor.
2) Is it just one download?
3) What do you actually get with that download? Do you just get the database? Or do you get SQL*Plus? Do you get Oracle Forms?
4) Is it fairly easy to set up and configure?
5) Does it have all the features of the enterprise version except on a smaller basis - Packages, Stored Procedures, Triggers, Functions, Synonyms, etc?
6) Is there any other concerns or comments that I should be aware of?

OK, let's see:
1) Will it take up a lot of resources and bog down my
computer? I have XP Pro with 512M Memory and plenty
of disk space with a 1.8 Ghz AMD processor.The main concern is memory, 512 is fairly good to run OracleXE.
2) Is it just one download?Yes, it is just one download for the database, if you want to have the client, then there is another download, this can be obtained from the same site where you got the database. There are other minor downloads, but those are silent install files, used only when you want to batch the installation process.
3) What do you actually get with that download? Do
you just get the database? Or do you get SQL*Plus? Do
you get Oracle Forms?You get the RDBSM 10gR2XE, and sqlplus as the SQL CLI (Command Line Interface), plus the OracleXE manager (a web based administrator, this cannot be compared with the regular EM DB Console, but it's nice, compact and provides pretty good manageability). You don't get development tools, but it is advisable that you download the SQLDeveloper, and IDE (free too) to develop PLSQL in a Toad like way.
4) Is it fairly easy to set up and configure?Yes, but just like any other rdbms, like MySQL or postgress, you should have an introductory document to tell you the basics to startup. Managing this from its web console gives you a first productive administrative session. Meanwhile, you should be getting involved with more advanced concepts, and you can get the XE documents from the tahiti site (http://tahiti.oracle.com).
5) Does it have all the features of the enterprise
version except on a smaller basis - Packages, Stored
Procedures, Triggers, Functions, Synonyms, etc?There are several limitation, it is a very good point to start, but don't expect this to be used for a massive deployment on high availability and mission critical environments, it can be used for production, but you should be aware of the features and capabilities of the version, there are a couple of very good references where you can get an insight on what you can and cannot expect from XE:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/oracle10g/pdf/twp_general_10gdb_product_family.pdf
and http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/cunningham-database-xe.html
6) Is there any other concerns or comments that I
should be aware of?Just read the above references and get your own conclusions, if you have any further concerns, please don't hesitate to come back to the forum. By the way there is an specific OracleXE forum, if you are interested, if you want to access this forum you must register to it.

    No reason to be embarassed. You are not alone.
    You will need an external drive. If you have a Time Machine drive without enough disk space you can create the clone there however it's advised that you keep your Time Machine and clone on separate drives. If the drive dies you loose both types of backup.
    Download and install the clone software. Everyone has their favorite. These are the two most common applications used. I prefer SuperDuper because of it's simplicity in setting up. It's also free for the first clone where with CCC you have to give a Credit Card then cancel if you do not want to keep.
    SuperDuper! http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    CCC http://www.bombich.com/download.html
    Select your drive in the To popup. Click on Copy Now. That's it.
    Yes, it really is that simple....

    1. It's posssible to download full version. Look at http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/index.html
    2. Minimum requirements are described in documentation.
    More at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/index.html
    3. AFAIK there are not Standard or Personal edition of Oracle Developer Suite just DB is in that versions.
    Check the details about product and choose one.
    4. I'think you just need Oracle DB and Oracle DS. Beter check the details about each of product and make your own decision.

  • Question about pictures file in home folder

    I am trying to create more space on my hard drive and have a question about the pictures file.
    In addition to the iPhoto Library I have several folders named 1, 2, 3 etc each containing a bunch of photos; plus several hundred individual photo files.
    My question is whether these files are duplicates of what is in the iPhoto Library - and is there an easy way to find that out?
    And I guess also to find out how they got there in the first place. Could these be imports from disks as opposed to my digital camera?
    Thanks for any help,
    Laura

    Hey laura,
    I haven't used iPhoto for a while but from memory i think that i work similar to iTunes. Whne files are processed by iPhoto they are catalogued on the hard drive according to the iPhoto preferences. I would check out the iPhoto preferences and see if you can see anything in here that will tell you what is going on.

  • Question about changing XP Media centre edition to xp home

    I don't want to do anything illegal but is there a way for me to put Xp home on to my laptop without having to buy a new
    one.Sort of a downgrade I suppose.MCE came with my laptop which I upgraded to Vista not long after but I would much prefer to have plain ol XP.
    Cheers

    Hello Anthony
    It is not known to me that you can downgrade OS, just upgrade. I am afraid you need to install WXP again using Microsoft installations CD.
    I do not know which notebook model you have but if you want to have clean OS installation I recommend you to install WXP Professional.

  • A question about a personal Arch product

    I am wondering if it is possible that once I arrive at a satisfactory finished ( or at least closed to finished) Arch is it possible to burn this to a disk so that if I ever want to totally reinstall this all I would have to do is through the disk into the cd trayand it would install everything that was on it. let me try to explain this a little better with Windows you can use nlite or vlite ( depending on whish version you have) what you do is just add or take away things you want or don't want them burn them to disk so when you ( because it is microsoft) have to do a reinstall you just use the disk you made.

    yeah but if you use one of those partition copying tools, to keep an up-to-date copy you have to recopy the whole thing over all the time. If you just keep a backup of your /home folder with rsync or something, I think it's easier. And it doesn't really require a whole lot of re-setting up, because all you settings are preserved. You just need to redownload your packages, which you can get with pacman -Qet as I mentioned above. And yeah, if you want to see the output in the terminal, just do a standard pacman -Qet, but if you appened the '> packages.txt' it'll output it into a file in the current directory, which I like. I've even taken my top-level packages and created a simple command called 'initial-install' in my .bashrc. I reglarly update it whenever I install new packages, so if I ever need to reinstall, all I need to do is type 'initial-install' and it'll redownload everything I need, and I'll be back up and running very quickly.

  • I have a question about free hand crop on PhotoshopCC

    I have a pic that I want to take a specific shape from, but the colors are numerous and complex so the magic wand wont work. Is there a way to free hand crop or select only the odd shape with a drawing option?????? I want to snip just the loader machine from this pic and insert it in a collage. Can someone suggest a method for this? I am using Photoshop CC.
    thanks, betdy1345

    Hold down the mouse button over the magic wand tool in the tool bar for a few seconds, a small popup will appear, select the quick selection tool. You can use this to drag over the UTV, then move the UTV to a new layer (ctrl-shift-j {windows} command-shift-j {Mac})
    Instead of moving to a new layer, you could also convert the selection to a mask. Click the icon in the layers panel that looks like a circle inside of a square. Also, if the layer the image is on is a background layer, you need to click on the padlock on that layer to convert it it to a normal layer, that is required to make the mask work.
    The reason for the mask, is it will make it easier to change the shape of the mask if it needs adjusting ex. you can still see part of the house.
    The mask is also non-destructive, meaning you can remove it any time you want at a later date. Whereas the cut to layer is destructive, meaning once it is done and you do not have a backup, there is no going back once the file is closed.

  • Question about using ejb remote home vs ejb reference

    hi guys
    i am new to EJB and want to understand the difference between these two. i notice that the ejb reference is declared in the ejb-jar.xml so that the calling ejb can get the home object by using
    initCtx.lookup("java:comp/env/ejb/CabinHome");which is declared in
    <ejb-ref>
      <description>Cruise ship cabin</description>
      <ejb-ref-name>ejb/CabinHome</ejb-ref-name>
      <ejb-ref-type>Entity</ejb-ref-type>
      <home>com.titan.cabin.CabinHome</home>
      <remote>com.titan.cabin.Cabin</remote>
      <ejb-link>CabinBean</ejb-link>
    </ejb-ref>how does this differ from using the JNDI to get the home interface. which one is preferred?
    thanks for your help.

    Right, portable Java EE applications always access resources via their component environment rather than doing a direct global JNDI lookup. Declaring the ejb dependency provides a level of indirection that allows it to be mapped to the appropriate target ejb in each application server without requiring any code changes. The same principle is used for other kinds of component dependencies such as data sources, queues, etc.
    The downside to this in J2EE 1.4 and earlier was the overhead/complexity of declaring the ejb-ref/ejb-local-ref in the deployment descriptor. Java EE 5 improves this by introducing environment annotations such as @EJB that make it easy to declare the dependencies. In Java EE 5, @EJB is equivalent to ejb-ref/ejb-local-ref but doesn't require the use of .xml.
    The bottom line is if you're writing code that's running within a Java EE component, always access Java EE resources/dependencies through your component environment or use an environment annotation.

  • Question about Tutorial: Developing RIA Web Applications with Oracle ADF

    I'm learning about ADF and JDeveloper:
    According to the tutorial, after I've bound the data controls for the top right panel and bottom right panel, the bottom panel should always show the employee selected from the collection above.
    However when I do the instructions, the employee information in the bottom right employee area never changes regardless if I select a different employee in the top panel collection.
    I can't figure out why the top and bottom panels don't link together. I'm using the same View in both panels....
    I'm using Build JDEVADF_11.1.1.1.0_GENERIC_090615.0017.5407
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
    Rob

    The mechanism that synch the two section of the page is called partial page rendering.
    It should work if you follow the instructions in the tutorial, but if it doesn't it is quite easy to fix:
    In the structure pane, select the Form component that surrounds the employees update section
    Then look at the properties inspector for a property call partial trigger
    Click the arrow on the right of it to select edit - and navigate your page hierarchy to choose the table component.
    An example is here:

  • Question about 'user process' in the context of Oracle

    The following is an except from oracle documentation.
    Overview of User Processes
    When a user runs an application program (such as a Pro*C program) or an Oracle tool (such as
    Enterprise Manager or SQL*Plus), Oracle creates a user process to run the user's application.http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/process.htm
    As my understand, an user process is a piece of software that can connect to an oracle server. You (the user) can start a piece of this kind of software, then connect to oracle. If so, why Oracle creates a user process to run the user's application?
    Thanks.

    Hi. I would suggest reading the 11.2 Concepts manual: it is much improved:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e16508/process.htm
    This text is trying to say that the application starts a client process that can connect to the database. The database manages server processes and background processes; the application runs the client process.

  • A question about creating a Connection pool that uses Oracle JDBC

    Dear all,
    I have an issue with creating a connection pool within a web application in order to be used by several servlets. I appreciate if you could kindly give me a hand.
    I'm using:
    Web server: Apache-tomcat: 6.0.18
    Oracle Database 11g Enterprise: 11.1.0.6.0 - Production
    Operating system: Linux (ubuntu 8.10)
    IDE: Sun Netbeans
    Oralce JDBC Drivers: 11.1.0.7.0-Production (ojdbc6.jar and orai18n.jar)
    JDK 1.6
    Usually, just for creating a connection to my database (without using a connection pool), I proceed in the following way:
    String dbURL = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:database01";
    String username = "scott";
    String user_password = "tiger";
    String userSqlQuery = "SELECT * FROM mytable";
    Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection (dbURL, username, user_password);
    Statement statement = connection.createStatement();
    statement.executeUpdate(query_text);This works pretty well allowing to communicate with my oracle database. By this method I have run several projects
    with different queries (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE ,etc.) and each time it worked without any problem and
    returned the result of the query. Therefore I think that there is no problem with JDBC drivers
    However, when I want to create a connection pool, it seems that the lookup method cannot locate Oracle JDBC drivers. That is,
    try
         InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
         Context envContext  = (Context)ic.lookup("java:/comp/env");
         dataSource = (DataSource)envContext.lookup("jdbc/oracle11gEnterprise");
           Connection connection = dataSource.getConnection();
    catch (Exception e)
         e.printStackTrace();
    }Just after calling dataSource.getConnection() the java.lang.NullPointerException is thrown.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance,
    And for your information, here are context.xml and web.xml files for my project
    Here is my context.xml

  • Oracle 10g on Windows XP Home Edition?

    I was reading the installation guide and in Sofware Requirements section XP Home Edition is not listed just XP Professional.
    XP Professional is recommended or mandatory, Oracle 10g does not work on XP Home Edition?

    Oracle only certifies the database on the Professional edition, not the Home edition of Windows XP. If you are just installing Oracle for personal education, most things will most likely work just fine on the Home Edition.

    I was very confused when I found that this QFE and subsequent ones posted on the 16 April 2005 relate to Pre SP2 critical updates no9t required if one has already taken earlier advice of updating to Service Pack, at the very least your narrative should make mention of this. I find it very difficult to believe that your updates are two+ years out of date.
