Questions about Mac. (Future Mac owner)

Hi,
I have had my HP Vista running laptop for 2 months and am very upset with it. The DVD drive only works when it wants to and it is very slow starting up running a 1.8 ghz AMD Turion X2 process. I have used only 1/4 of the harddrive too!!! 1GB ram is installed in the computer. I do have a few questions to ask about the Mac.
1. I have ISP Comcast and using a Motorola Surfboard modem and a Linksys WRT54G V8 Wireless router to connect to the internet on my PC. If I have it connected wirelessly on my PC, would I be able to connect to the internet wireless easily on the Mac using the same network and same 128-bit encryption? Would I have to reinstall the Linksys or Comcast software? Can you explain how I would connect to the internet wirelessly so I will know if I get a Mac?
2. If I buy the Mac on an online retailer such as Amazon.com, would I still be able to receive support from an Apple genius bar?
3. Can I get Limewire on the Mac and drag it on to iTunes? If Limewire can be used on the Mac, where can I download it?
4. Can I get Windows Live Messenger on the Mac and use my current email and password? Would all of my contacts stay?
5. Are there any other softwares besides for Microsoft Word to type up basic documents or reports for school?
6. If I have my printer currently installed on my PC, can I easily reinstall it on the Mac?
Thanks very much for the help!

Hi Nick
1. All MacBooks come with built-in wireless networking, so all you'd have to do is click on the Airport icon which will appear in your menubar, choose your wireless network's name, and then type in the password. You won't need to reinstall any software, and both PC and Mac will be able to surf wirelessly at the same time. Make sure that your router is set to distribute IP addresses (using DHCP) - if, for example, your router's local IP address is 192.168.1.1, and your PC is currently at 192.168.1.2, then your Mac should have no problem connecting and getting an IP address. If you currently pass your public IP onto your PC, then you would need to reconfigure this at your router.
2. Yes, you can always get free Apple Genius help, and your Apple warranty is for one year (90 days of phone support) wherever you buy it. You also have the option of buying AppleCare within the first year, for two extra years of coverage.
3. Limewire is available for the Mac, from its website.
4. MSN Messenger is available for the Mac (download here). A lot of Mac users prefer Adium, which can access all major chat networks, including MSN, and retrieve your contacts automatically.
5. You can try NeoOffice, which is free and Office-compatible. Apple's iWork includes Pages, which is a fully-featured word processor. Microsoft Office 2004 Student and Teacher edition is only $149 - also, Apple and/or Microsoft occasionally have deals on buying a Mac with Office, so check their websites.
6. Most printers have Mac drivers, check your printer's website. If you can't find it, post back with the model number, and we'll try to help you out.
Good luck!
Matt

  • Question about compatibility w/ Mac OS

Ok... I'm new here (since I've never had a problem with my Zen Vision: M, 30 GB) so I don't know how many times before my question has been asked. I'm thinking about purchasing a Mac Book, and don't know how my Zen will work on it. I know that Mac's can now run Windows, and I've also learned about?this 3rd party?software called XNJB for Creative users running on OS X. My question is, is there any other option? I spoke to this guy at the apple store that said you can install Windows Media Player on OS X, so would it be possible to just use that to transfer my files into my Zen without having to install Windows or some third party program?Message Edited by cinsere89 on 05-08-200709:08 AM

  • Questions about the future directions of InfoPath and Microsoft Access

Because I have been confused about the future directions of InfoPath and Access, I wrote a short blog post, which I have pasted below.  My question is, can Microsoft provide some more guidance on Access vs InfoPath?  If Access is indeed the
the future direction, can you please provide some pointers to resources that can help us transition.
A Short Review of MS Access,  SharePoint ,InfoPath (2013)
After the November 2012 SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas (#spc12) there were a number of blog posts and people saying that Access 2013 was great and would be replacing InfoPath.
    Marc Anderson and
    Ruven
Gotz have short posts summarizing #SPC12 and touch on the subject of InfoPath and Access.  I also spoke with several individuals shortly after #SPC12 and they were excited about Access 2013.
Since I rely heavily on InfoPath for much of what I do, I wanted to kick the tires and see what everyone was talking about.  First, a few notes about SharePoint 2013 and Office 2013.
Microsoft should rename Access:  If you have tried to
bing the word Access, then you know that the search results are overwhelming,  because the word "access" is used for so many other purposes.
Use the RTM version of Office 2013! I was performing  my investigations by leveraging the Office 365 Beta and the Office Applications that come with it.  Not much was working!  After I uninstalled the Beta
version of Office 2013 and Installed the RTM version everything seemed to work.
Windows 7 and IE 9.0: The drag & drop that is being touted as
"manna from heaven" seems to work well with Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and IE 10, but it does
    not work with IE 9!
Non Microsoft browsers are still second class citizens (except for the drag & drop):  Microsoft has finally done away with the Active X's for datasheet view (that is brilliant!)  One can now see the newly
minted datasheet view in many browsers.  But I still find that one needs to be in IE to do a number of key manual opeartions.  For example pasting numerous rows of data from a spreadsheet into the new sheet view works only in IE.
    Access 2013
Microsoft Access is touted as a non developer tool.  I know a number of people who are on the business side and love Access.  These people will like the renewed energy that Microsoft has applied to Access.   One should note that conceptually
this functionality existed  in SharePoint 2010.  Here is what I see that is new:
+The new version works better:Although I haven't tested it fully, it seems that many more features that work on the Desktop version of Access, now work in the published Web Application which is hosted by SharePoint 2013.
+The new version has fairly robust browser based forms: End users can now fill in data using forms that are rendered in the browser.
+The published version that resides in SharePoint now uses its own SQL server tables.  So the engine appears to be SQL Server, not a modified version of Access built for a server.  This stands to be quite robust, but I imagine
that some quirks will surface due to new model.
    The limitations are:
    - Access is pretty much its own application and does not integrate with SharePoint building blocks.  For example, an Access table is not easy to integrate with a SharePoint workflow.  Further, although  Access forms now are visible
in a browser, they are not nearly as rich as InfoPath forms.  InfoPath forms cannot easily integrate with the Access tables.  In order to integrate SharePoint features and Access, one needs to tie SharePoint list(s) to Access as data sources.
This overcomplicates the model and one may very well run into synchronization issues.
In short, although I believe there will be some people who will be happy with newly minted Access, I do not think that Access will be able to replace InfoPath and Workflow technologies.  I do agree that Microsoft does not seem to have put much energy into
InfoPath.  If they leave a vacuum in this space, then others may very well take over, for instance Nintex Forms.

Although I agree with the comments made by Ruven and Marc after the conference please note that those blog posts are their own personal opinions and that they don't work for Microsoft.  A lot of people have asked Microsoft to clarify the future of InfoPath
and the response up until now has been a deafening silence.  In my opinion speculations about Access replacing InfoPath are premature.
I should also point out that most of your comments about Access 2013 above are actually about Access Services in SharePoint Server 2013.  Access Services are NOT Access they are a shared service offering in SharePoint that convert and publish Access
databases and forms.  As you point out once an Access database is published through Access services it is converted to SQL Server and no longer resides in Access.  Of course I don't work for Microsoft either so these are all just my personal opinion.
Having said that I doubt you will get the confirmation/response that you are hoping for from any official Microsoft channel.

  • Few questions about my new mac book? im new to mac

#1.  Im new to mac so i dont know a whole lot about them but today while browsing the web i got a window that opened that said "browse your mac with Mackeeper to clean it and make sure its safe and to optimize your performance"  I didnt click on anything but it wouldnt let me exit out i had to force quit my Safari to get it to go away.  What is this?
#2.  What do i need to do to keep my mac from getting slow and getting viruses? the most i really do on it is typing work, checking email, watching you tube, social networking on facebook, and browsing forums (forums like this where i can ask questions or share my experiences on certain things)  if im not doing any of that im on websites like bestbuy or Cabelas or Bass pro shops doing online shopping.  Every so often i have to do online research but not often.  do i have much to worry about?
#3.  Im on my computer everyday what is better for it? Leaving it turned on 24/7 since i mainly use it at home plugged into the wall turning it on in the morning or whenever i get on and shutting it down before bed? or turning it on and off throughout the day as i get on and off?
#4.  When the computer is plugged in the battery says it only has a 96% charge.. its brandnew shouldnt it be at 100%? even though so far i havent really used the battery?

    1. The popup you received should be ignored, you were wise to ignore it. It is well publicized in other forums. I'd recommend looking over:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3029144?tstart=0 for a more thorough explanation.
    2. There are zero, none, nada, zip Virus's for Macs so the best thing you can do is simply enjoy it. There is no maintenance that is necessary either, everything you were used to doing with a PC is now in your past! OS X is designed to do daily, weekly and monthly maintenance on it's own in the background usually in the middle of the night. Nothing other than that needs to be done. You can download and install Maintidget at:
http://www.giantmike.com/widgets/Maintidget.html this will show you when these scripts were last run.
    3. As for what is best for your computer I'd recommend reading the owners manual that came with it. Because you have a portable it has a battery that needs to be maintained. Please read the following articles on the care of your battery, it needs to be exercised. Leaving it plugged in 24/7 shortens it's life so please read the articles especially the article on calibration.
Batteries , Battery Calibration , Battery Maintenance and Troubleshooting.
    4. Also because you are new to Mac's I'd recommend bookmarking and reading the following sites, they're specifically for folks like yourself that are considering or have changed from MS Windows.

  • Question about converting a mac formatted ipod w/ the restore icon to pc

    Hey Guys.
    Here's a question w/ some background.
I bought an IPOD about 6 months ago and connected it to my MAC at work...where I uploaded music and etc...
I've changed jobs...have a PC at home and at my new job. Earlyer today my IPOD came up with the restore icon, and I'm thinking since I have to reinstall everything anyways...I wanna format it to PC as well as restore it so I start from scratch with my ipod blank and my home computer.
    How should I proceed?
Do I restore with a mac, then bring it to my pc? Let me know what to do.
    Thanks doodz.

I too am trying to do what Say Word is, BUT, even though I have done EVERYTHING on the list, the PC still won't recognize the ipod. The article covering "Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod" states: "You cannot use iPod for Mac with a Windows PC". So my question is -- how will I ever get the PC (using USB) to recognize a Mac formated iPod. HELP Puleeese!

  • A few questions about reformatting my mac

Alright, I have had my Mac for about a year now and have filled up every nook and cranny of its hard drive and it has begun to kind of lag a lot. I want to backup a lot of things and then reformat the hardrive. I have a few questions before I go about doing this:
How do I reformat my drive?
How do I reinstall tiger, when I bought my mac it came with 10.3 but then tiger came out the day after and I got it for 9.99 and had to install it after I started using my mac, I think its an upgrade version, does that matter? Do I install 10.3 and upgrade it again to tiger?
Am I stupid for doing this?
Another question, a little off topic....
I backup my iTunes library on an external hardrive a lot, but its a manual backup, I dont use an application that compresses it to one file, I just copy the iTunes library folder to another drive. Everytime I delete an artist from my library, I delete it permanently, knowing that I still have them saved on the external drive. So if I deleted a folder called AC/DC from my regular itunes folder, when I copy my iTunes folder to the backup, it asks me if I want to replace the folder called iTunes, Will it delete the folder called ac/dc already in the backup, since it isnt in the folder I am copying over.
    -Thanks

    Hi boarderjosh,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Reformat: Boot from the 10.3 install CD 1 by holding down the c-key during boot. Once the installer app has started select "disk utility" from the menu and reformat your drive.
Reinstall: If your Tiger disks are upgrade disks you will have to install 10.3 first and then upgrade to 10.4. Do not forget: Repair permissions before and after each update step!
Stupid: No, because your disk is so full this might be the best way. Keep in mind that MacOS X needs at least 1.5 GB of free hard disk space at all times in order to work properly.
Backup: If you select to replace the folder the system will do exactly that: Erase the old folder and copy the new one. Therefore all contents that was in the old folder is gone and you will only have what is in the new folder. Most backup applications such as Carbon Copy Cloner have a synchronize option and an option where you can select whether files that are not in the new folder should be kept or deleted.

  • Questions about Mid-2010 Mac Pro graphics card upgrades

Hey guys and gals, so I've been searching the web for any PCI-E Mac and Windows Compatible graphics cards. I currently have the stock ATI Radeon 5770. From the sites and resources I've found, I'm set on the EVGA GTX680 Mac Edition but I also heard about the different cards you can use if you "flash" them. I have a few questions: 1. Are there any more recent lists with compatible cards 2. is flashing worth it and how difficult is it. I am moderately tech savey. 3. what websites are trustworthy besides OWC and Newegg.
    Thanks

  • Two questions about my new Mac Pro

Just got my new Mac Pro up and running and have two questions (issues)
First, I had to buy the DVI to ADC Display adapter to hook up my Cinema Display but now I can't turn the computer on from the monitor like I use to. Is that right? It's no big deal to have to turn it on at the computer itself, just wondering if anybody else is having this happen.
Also, the audio out at the back of the computer doesn't work. I've tried plugging in my speaker as well as my headset and nothing. If I plug either of those into the headset jack in the front of the computer all is well. Any thoughts?
Otherwise, I sure do love my Mac Pro!
    Thanks.
    jamie

I had to buy the DVI to ADC Display adapter to hook up my Cinema Display but now I can't turn the computer on from the monitor like I use to. Is that right?
ADC has pins for power control and the power light. DVI does not have these signals so the display's power button cannot turn on the computer when used with a DVI to ADC adapter.

  • A stupid question about the new mac pro

I know the mac pro has dual ethernet ports, but does it also have wifi built in? Or do I actually have to plug it tonto my router? Sorry for the perhaps obvious question.
PS. As a point of interest, I received mine yesterday. There was NOTHING inside of the box except for the cpu. I know the docs will be already installed on the cpu along with my purchase of Final Effex Pro X. It just took me by surprise is all. Now my next problem is trying to take my time and relish the exciting setup today. Unfortunately, I have compression fractures in my lower back from this last snow storm, so my enjoyment will be bitter sweet.
    Thanks for you help.

    From the product page (http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/):
    Wireless: 802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless networking;3 IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n compatible
    and
In the box: Mac Pro, power cord
So, yes, it does have Wi-Fi. However, you are likely to get better local network performance with a gigabit ethernet cable and a gigabit ethernet switch (assuming you have other local gigabit devices similarly connected).
For many years, Apple has been cutting down on the amount of hardcopy documentation shipped with products. Two years ago, my MacBook Pro came with a tiny booklet that was little more than how to plug it in and turn it on, an equally tiny warranty booklet, and some logo stickers. I'm only a little surprised to hear they are now down to zero paper shipped.

  • Two Fold question about MAIL on Mac OS X Tiger

In the left hand margin, on email page, first item is IN, on my Mac, below that was my name, Eva Driscoll, below that my husband, Don Driscoll. Suddenly it was reversed with his name first. Neither of us changed this. No big deal, EXCEPT: Now when I forward anything in my name, Eva Driscoll, on the new "forwarded page" the sender appears as Don Driscoll. This means I have to remember to change it from Don to Eva, before I forward any e mail. Is there any way to fix this, so when I forward something I wrote, my name will stay in place as on the original email, instead of changing to Don? I have already looked at everything under Mail and Preferences, but nothing seems to be there to rectify what is happening. Thanks in advance to anyone who might help me with this problem.

You can click and drag an account's Inbox mailbox to
the top or bottom position in the mailboxes drawer
under Inbox and this can also be done via the
Accounts window at Mail > Preferences > Accounts.
The address chosen when replying to or forwarding a
received message is based on which email
account/address the received message as addressed to
    - namely which account's Inbox mailbox the message
    was received by.
    Does this no longer happen?
reply to Allan Sampson: I am sorry I do not understand your second sentence below. Example: I sent an email to Jan,from me, Eva Driscoll. Then I remembered something else I wanted to add, so I hit forward, added what I wanted to add. But on this forwarded page to Jan,it no longer says from Eva (as on the first email to Jan), now it says fromDon, and I have to change it to Eva.
Where is the mailbox drawer under Inbox? I have On my Mac,then the two names which became reversed without our doing so.
But my question is: why does it change from Eva to Don simply by forwarding the same email to the same person originally sent to?

  • Basic question about upgrading from Mac OS X 10.4.11

Very simple - how do I upgrade my Mac to run the many apps & gadgets which now require more than 10.4.11?
A friend said I'd have to change to Leopard/S Leopard. But is there another way? I think we might be confusing 2 different issues here.
    Thanks for help.

No, there is no other way.

  • Question about importing from mac mail to folder in address book

Is it possible to place imported email addresses (Mac email) into specific folder(s) in Address Book rather than into just the All Folder.? For example, I have several business addresses that I want to import from Mac Mail automatically into my Business Folder and several others that I want to go into Friends Folder. Can this be done? If so how? Thanks
iMac Intel Duo 20" Mac OS X (10.4.10)
      Mac OS X (10.3.7)

The Address Book database is similar to the iTunes database and iPhoto database.
If you use iTunes then you know you can't place a song in a playlist without the song being in the primary iTunes database first and the same with iPhoto. You can't place a photo in an album with the photo being in the main iPhoto library first.
The same with Address Book. You can't place a contact in an Address Book group without the contract being in the primary Address Book "All" Group and I'm not aware of a way to place a contact in the primary All group and in a designated group at the same time.

  • 2 Questions about Windows for Mac

    1) When you install windows for Mac, does that become the "dominant" OS for the computer, or can you go back and forth? The reason I'm asking is because...
    2) I just got a mac, but I have a lot of PC only game,s most of which are PC games, that I want to play. Do PC only games run on Windows for Mac?

Just wanted to clarify one thing and that is that there is no such thing as Windows for Mac. There is Boot Camp that will partition your drive so that you can install Windows on the new partition which in turn will allow you to run Windows Operating system on your Mac.
When you install windows for Mac, does that become the "dominant" OS for the computer, or can you go back and forth?
Neither OSx nor Windows become the dominant system. You are free to choose and go back and forth (requires shut down and reboot) as you see fit. You can set one system as the default over another and switch that too at will.
I just got a mac, but I have a lot of PC only game,s most of which are PC games, that I want to play. Do PC only games run on Windows for Mac?
Yes the PC Only games should run on Windows when installed via boot camp on a Mac however your Mac in turn must meet the games' hardware requirements just like any other windows based PC.

  • Question about the new Mac Mini

I'm considering getting a Mac soon, I've considering my various options and the new Mac Mini has recently caught my eye.
    1. The higher end model now has a 6630M AMD GPU, if I also combine this with the i7 CPU and 8GB RAM upgrades, would this be a good viable option for gaming? The CPU would only be dual-core.
    2. Can the Mac Mini be connected with a new Macbook Air as use as an external monitor? Would Thunderbolt make this possible?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Question about a new Mac and my old iTunes apps and music

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro to replace my old Windows laptop. I'm planning on de-authorizing my old laptop and wiping it. How do I ensure that I won't lose any apps I've purchased for my iPhone, and any Music I've purchased from iTunes?
    Thanks!

There is a "Music" folder in Finder. Put "iTunes" and its whole folder structure in "Music". So it will look like:
    Music
    .....iTunes
    ........itunes Music (folder)
    ........iTunes Library (file)
    ........iTunes Music Library.xml (file)
The first time you launch iTunes it will probably want to rebuild the library. When it finishes you must Authorize the new Mac in the iTunes store. Click on iTunes Store, then got to Store/Authorize Computer in the iTunes menu.
