Questions about Oracle client upgrade
Hello,
I have to upgrade my Oracle Client (to 9.2.0.8) on an HPUX server, in order to migrate the database to 10G in a later stage.
I read the note 1017418, but I did not understand it well ...
It's the case of a central instance and I understand that I have to perform the step 6, but there is no usage of command SAPCAR ! just several checks !
and what about the sentence "If at a later stage the database server would be upgraded to Oracle 10.x, you would need to install the Oracle 9.2 client as described in step 5 above." ?
Have I to perform this step 5 right now ? and only this step ?
I hope that somebody in the world already made this operation successfully ...
Please : I need help !
Regards
Hi,
I'll try to explain:
The note mentions on the step 6:
<i> 6. For application servers with database instance (DB Server), if the
database server is Oracle 9.2 please do the following:</i>
On this situation you do not install physically the oracle client.
You already have the RDBS software installed ( lets say it is 9.2.0.8 as you are talking about installing oracle client 9.2.0.8 )
On the RDBMS software is already included the oracle client.
For this reason, insted of installing <u>physically</u> the client you have softlinks from the directories where the SAP kernel is looking for the client to the RDBMS software.
points <b>a</b> to <b>d</b> are cheking what I already explained.
But, the oracle client delivered by SAP contains some bugfixes, therefore you have to check that also those bugfixes are installed on the database. That is point <b>e</b>
Point <b>f</b> only tells you that is valid while you have the 9.2.0.8 software installed on the server. If you upgrade to 10g, probably you will uninstall the oracle 9i software ( about 2 Gb to be freed ) in that case you must install physically the oracle 9.2.0.8 client

Question about Oracle Client Software
Hi!
I'm going to develop a software which will access an Oracle Database somewhere on the network. This software will be developed using C++ language and will run on a Linux RedHat 7.3 machine.
Searching for APIs to connect with Oracle Database, I found OCI and OCCI, which I think will do this job. Also, in another thread in this group, I found that I have to install Oracle Client Software on the machine which will run my software. Then I came into a question: is it possible to install Oracle Client Software alone in a machine, I mean, without the entire database? If yes, how about the licenses? Do I have to have a Oracle Client License for each machine running my software or is it free for Linux?
Thanks in advance,
Fabio Fonseca

BrasilIs there a different client that includes the Oracle Net software as stated in the OBE ? if so, where is it ?Before V11 Oracle used to package a "Client CD" & it appears it is no longer available.

A question about Oracle 1g R2 Enterprise Edition license
Dear all,
I have a question about Oracle license and I would appreciate if you could kindly help me.
I have installed an Oracle server (11g R2 Enterprise edition) on a linux virtual machine. The pc used for this purpose
is my enterprise laptop (therefore a professional and not a personal Computer). However, I use the this Oracle Server
only for learning purpose, that is, only for running the examples in my Oracle Press books (SQL, PL/SQL and some
administration tasks) just for learning the stuff.
There is absolutely no data related to my enterprise, stored or used on this server. Whenever I want to work with my
enterprise data, I use the Oracle server of the enterprise which has of course the appropriate license. So as I said, I
use this Enterprise server on the virtual machine only for running queries/programs in my Oracle Press books just for
learning and I'm the sole person who uses this server (no remote connection for other users).
The reason for which I needed to install this server on my PC was that our DBA couldn't provide a training environment
for me with all required privileges and functionalities.
Am I supposed to buy a license for this installed Enterprise server on my virtual machine?
Thanks in advance,

I think self training can be considered in this category, therefore I think there is no need to buy a license for that.

Question about SAP client setting when create new connection in CR2008
Dear All,
I have a question about SAP client setting in Crystal Report 2008 when I try to create a new connection use SAP OpenSQL(SAP Table,Cluster,or Function).
I have a SAP IDES environment with 5 clients.
While I try to create a CR standard report use SAP OpenSQL, I entered 800 into Client field in u201CUser logon credentialsu201D. The connection can be created and I can get table list. After I built a report ,I can not get data from IDES client 800, but I can get data from client 000.
I am sure client 800 has data.I checked client 800 table with Tcord se16.
I also did other tests and felt confused a lot.
Even inexistent client, such as u201C00u201Dand u201C8000u201D can be used for creating connection.
I just want to know how can I get data from client 800.
Thanks for your kindly help!
WayneDear Ingo,
Thanks for your reply!
I am not sure about your suggestion clearly. What's your mean all the authorizations to use CR?
Maybe I should clarify my operations.
I logon CR2008 as administrator and created two SAP connections with different client.
There is a table named "/BEV3/CHBALLG" be showed in these connections.
I checked clients "000" and "800" both have data in the table.
I can use client 000 connection create report and get right data, but the report base on client 800 connection could not get data.
If change to another table, such as "/SAPDMC/LSOFIL", I can get data both form these connections.
I found one thing is very weird. Client "00" and "8000" do not exist in my IDES environment, but I can use them for creating connection.
May I have your further suggestions?

Several questions about oracle ASM in 11gR2.
Hi, all.
The db is 11.2.0.3 on a linux machine.
I have several questions about oracle ASM functionality.
1. V$ASM_DISKGROUP.ALLOCATION_UNIT_SIZE is the stripe size in bytes??
2. V$ASM_DISK.DISK_NUMBER is unique to a physical disk??
3. if the second question is the case,
disk_number=0 (a physical disk) has 14 partition on it.
And each partition belongs to several diskgroups.
Is ths right??

Edited by: 869578 on 2012. 12. 23 오후 10:051. No. The stripe size always equals 128 KB in any configuration.
(http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e18951/asmcon.htm#BABCGDBF)That is not a true statement. Please read the document, the stripe size depends upon what method of striping we using (fine-grained or coarse-grained)
--from the same oracle document:
To stripe data, Oracle ASM separates files into stripes and spreads data evenly across all of the disks in a disk group. The fine-grained stripe size always equals 128 KB in any configuration; this provides lower I/O latency for small I/O operations. The coarse-grained stripe size is always equal to the AU size (not the data extent size).

Basic Questions about Oracle E-Business Suite
I am just now starting to learn about Oracle E-Business Suite.
I am an Oracle DBA, and I want to become an "Oracle Apps DBA".
The following questions pertain to the DATABASE side of E-Business:
*(1)* Is "Oracle E-Business Suite", and "Oracle Applications 11i" the
same product?
*(2)* Is Release 12, the current version of E-Business Suite?
*(3)* What is the Release of E-Business Suite that most Businesses are
currently using?
*(4)* I want to use 1GB of RAM, for the Laptop, that I want to install
E-Business Suite on, and it will be running under Oracle
Enterprise Linux -- Will this type of setup be OK for building a
personal training and learning environment (especially RAM size)?
*(5)* How much disk space do I need, just to do a basic install (no
demo databases)?Hi,
*(1)* Is "Oracle E-Business Suite", and "Oracle Applications 11i" the
same product?Yes, it even includes R12.
*(2)* Is Release 12, the current version of E-Business Suite?Yes, the most recent versions of R12 are (12.1.1 and 12.1.2).
*(3)* What is the Release of E-Business Suite that most Businesses are
currently using?Depends, some customer still on 11i while other customer managed to upgrade to R12 (or did a fresh installation/implementation of R12).
*(4)* I want to use 1GB of RAM, for the Laptop, that I want to install
E-Business Suite on, and it will be running under Oracle
Enterprise Linux -- Will this type of setup be OK for building a
personal training and learning environment (especially RAM size)?1 GB RAM is not enough, I would suggest you have 4 GB RAM (or more if possible).
*(5)* How much disk space do I need, just to do a basic install (no
demo databases)? This is documented in the installation manual, please refer to it to get the hardware requirements.

Hi,
I am having 10.2.0.1 oracle client running windows xp. I am trying to upgrade this client to 10.2.0.4. for this I downloaded the p6810189_10204_win32.zip.
While installing on 10.2.0.1 client oracle home. I am getting the following message

Please suggest, what to do... since the above services are irrelevant to oracle , is there any alternative?Do you have a web server running on this machine? Microsoft IIS f.ex.?
If yes, try stopping that.
Else, get a copy of Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com and try to find which dll from Oracle installation folder is being used by any of the services (listed or unlisted). -

Satellite U405D - Several questions about overheat/disassembly/upgrade etc.
Hi there,
I have several questions about my one year old Satellite U405D-S2910
1- When it works, after 2-3 hours (I usually run small programs like safari, msn messenger and bsplayer) CPU gets 85-90 C (178-188 F). When I play Age of Empires 2 (Come on, its an ancient game) like 2-3 hours it shuts down itself. What could be the possible reason?? By the way, let me inform you about the climate of the town I live, temp 30C - humidity 25-35% (nowadays).
ps. Cpu= AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor. Model, RM-74
2- I'm going to disassemble my laptop in order to clean its cooling units (I think reason of overheating is this). It doesnt seem like a desktop, so complicated. Ive seen a step-by-step disassembly(btw, its so hard to spell disassembly:) I think Im going to do this. What are your suggestions about it? any experiences could help me?
3- My laptops Ram memory consists of 2X2GB PC5300 DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM, I want to replace it to 2x2GB MACH XTREME DDR2 1333MHZ CL9 NOTEBOOK RAM. Should I do it? Does it fit my laptop, work stable? any suggestions?
ps. mainboard chipset AMD M780V
4- finally :) , Should I use 64 bit OS or 32 bit OS (win7)? what OS would you use if you were me?
Thank you.Hi buddy,
1+2. I think everything is related to a higher internal temperature and you should clean your notebook using compressed air spray. Therefore its not necessary to disassemble it, just blow gently and shortly the air through the notebook. You can buy such compressed air spray from every computer store I think and it takes only 5 minutes.
You can find an useful article about this here:
3. In my opinion you should forget this update! The RAM speed is related to FSB of CPU and as far as I know on Satellite U405D its 667MHz so its already the fastest RAM that you can have. Save your money and buy a bigger HDD or in best case an SSD that can really improve the performance!
4. In my opinion the answer is clear: Windows 7 64bit.
Only a 64bit OS support full 4GB RAM. ;) -
[Urgent] Some questions about Oracle Portal 10g - 11g upgrade
Dear friends,
We are under doing upgrading assessment of Oracle Portal from 10g to 11g. After reviewed the 'upgrading guide', we still have some questions as below:
1. Whether the 'Instant Portal' feature remain in Oracle Portal 11g? If yes, how to migrate the Instant Portal 10g sites? If no, any workaround?
2. Whether the old 10g Page Group and Pages will be still available after 11g upgrade? Also can customer import the old 10g transportset into Portal 11g?
3. How about the customized Portal 10g objects (such as customized template, style, attributes) after 11g upgrade? Still be usable?
4. Customer use PDK to develop many portlets in 10g. Can they use JDeveloper 11g to migrate their old project to 11g automatically?
Thank you in advance and any comment are welcome.1. Whether the 'Instant Portal' feature remain in Oracle Portal 11g? If yes, how to migrate the Instant Portal 10g sites? If no, any workaround?Instant Portal is not available anymore in Oracle Portal 11g. The Instant Portal page groups will be migrated to standard Portal page groups. Maintenance of the Instant Portal can be done with the standard Portal tools. The Instant Portal tools are not available anymore.
Whether the old 10g Page Group and Pages will be still available after 11g upgrade? Also can customer import the old 10g transportset into Portal 11g?Old 10g Page Groups are migrated to Portal 11g. They will still be available after the upgrade.
Export/Import through transports sets has always been limited to instances of the same version. It is not supported between versions as documented in the Administration Guide :
[11.2.1|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/portal.1111/e10239/cg_imex.htm#CCJBCCGD] System Requirements
Before exporting and importing content, ensure that your system meets the minimum system requirements, as described in this section.
Notes:
* Export and import functions only within the same release of Oracle Portal and the same patch release, for example, release 10.1.4 to release 10.1.4 or release 11.1.1 to release 11.1.1. You cannot export and import between two different releases, such as release 10.1.2 to release 10.1.4 or release 10.1.4 to release 11.1.1.
How about the customized Portal 10g objects (such as customized template, style, attributes) after 11g upgrade? Still be usable?Customized objects get migrated as well. Certain types (e.g. PL/SQL item types) need to be checked after upgrade as the behavior of the PL/SQL code may differ between database versions. This is particularly of concern when the 10.1.4.x Portal uses a 10.1 database. A database upgrade to either 10.2, 11.1 or 11.2 is necessary as Portal 11g is not supported with RDBMS 10.1.
Customer use PDK to develop many portlets in 10g. Can they use JDeveloper 11g to migrate their old project to 11g automatically?Never done this, but the Portal framework is able to consume JPDK providers which are running in older versions of the toolkit. If the providers are running in standalone OC4J containers, you would be able to upgrade the framework and keep the providers in their OC4J containers. This will allow you to focus on the framework first and worry about your providers later.

VERY Basic Questions about Oracle eBusiness - what "languages" are used?
Please forgive the very basic nature of this post- (I have been in systems (IT) for over 20 years, so I do have lots of systems experience, but no exposure to this particular software.)
So here are the basic questions - I assume that much of the data base logic is written in PL/SQL, but what other tools / languages are the applications written in?
(Oracle Forms, Oracle Reports, Java, C, something else?)
With over 20 years and experience with a number of other packages, I can learn a great deal about an application by 1. Looking at the DB structures (charts), 2. looking into DB code (Packages, triggers, procedure, functions) and 3. Seeing the screen shots.
None of my customers have had Oracle eBusiness - that have had home grown applications or other COTS/packages.
can anyone suggest a place where an independent person can inexpensively get some exposure?
My sincere thanks for any answers/suggestions.Hi,

Question about Oracle Database 11g: Program with PL/SQL

I've read that:
This course is a combination of Oracle Database 11g: PL/SQL Fundamentals and Oracle Database 11g: Develop PL/SQL Program Units courses.
In order to preparing for this exam, i should read the student guide, so there are 4 pdf files. One is Oracle Database 11g: PL/SQL Fundamentals, and the other 3 are regarding to Oracle Database 11g: Develop PL/SQL Program Units (volume I, II and III). My question is, regarding to this last one (Oracle Database 11g: Develop PL/SQL Program Units), which volume should i read? I saw that volume I has 400+ pages, and the IIIrd ~80.
Which document should i read? What's the difference between them?
Thanks!Passing the exam and becoming certified are not a matter of simply reading a book or taking a training class. While books and classroom materials as well as in-class training are all important steps in preparing for an exam, experience and research are just as important. I cannot tell you that there are 53 questions on the exam and every single question maps directly back to page 13, paragraph 3 in XX book. However, If you have the classroom material, and you have the list of exam topics, you should be able to find most of the information you need. In some cases, if you are not completely familiar with a specific topic, or you don't feel like the information in the book gives you all the information you need, you may need to do a little additional research. This is all part of preparing for an exam. This process is what makes you successful as a certified professional.
Your focus seems to be solely on the course materials that you have and what volumes and chapters you should read. I'm trying to give you a different perspective - preparing for an exam is not necessarily about taking one course or reading one book and being ready. You need to review the exam topics and be sure that you are familiar with each topic.

Question About Inactive Clients / Re-Imaged Clients
Hopefully a quick question... We have client push installation enabled site-wide in our SCCM 2012 implementation. What is expected behavior if a workstation is rebuilt on the same hardware with the same name and the same AD computer account is
reused?
So, for example, one of my coworkers asked me about his workstation. He reinstalled Windows on it recently but the SCCM client hasn't installed since he rebuilt. SCCM shows the client (the one tied to his old SMS GUID I imagine) as inactive.
There is no ccmsetup folder in c:\windows on his newly built workstation - I can't find any evidence that the client attempted to install. I confirmed that the OU where his computer account is located does fall under the OU structure configured in Active
Directory System Discovery. He said that when he joined it to the domain he was prompted (as expected I believe) that there was already a computer account with the same name and asked if he wanted to use the existing account, which he did.
I'd just like to know what behavior should be expected in this scenario. I haven't checked yet but, given how frequently systems get re-imaged in our environment, unless this is abnormal behavior and an isolated instance, I may find I have quite a
few clients that no longer have SCCM installed due to having been re-imaged.Hi,
The installed flag prevents Configuration Manager from reinstalling the client when automatic site-wide client push installation is enabled.
Delete aged discovery data
deletes inactive client records from the site database.
I think the newly built workstation should be assigned a new GUID.

Joyce Li

Cost benefit analysis for using XI 3.0
Hi, Does anyone have a cost benefit analysis document for using XI 3.0 versus developing point to point interfaces ? I need something that can easily justify and sell the idea of using XI over going down the custom path for point to point development
