Questions about Satellite M50-130

Hi All!
I have just got my first Toshiba NB - couldn't decide between them or other one but heard so many horror stories about the others, that I went for Toshiba and I am very pleased.
However, two queries please:
a) the notebook is VERY warm to the touch - is this usual and it is dangerous!;
b) my model has a Trubrite 14" screen but the quality of pictures on it for DVD movies is poor compared to DVD players -is this unusual? and you can only watch DVDs from a certain screen angle - again, is this because of the trubite screen?
Many thanks

Hi BEM
Nice unit. I saw it a few days ago. Nice design and in my opinion very user friendly because on the bottom side you can find all hardware components if you want to make any kind of upgrade.
Back to your questions.
In my opinion you should not be worry about warmness. In my opinion it is nothing unusual. Just in case that the unit is so hot that you can burn your skin than the issue is very serious. Every unit produces a lot of warmness. I have a new Qosmio F20 and the unit is warm too (the left side) but I am not worried about that. The fact is that all components are placed closely. If you think that the unit is too hot and you can not use it please contact service partner. They will check the unit.
I saw this unit in the electronic store and if I am remember right the unit has TrueBrite WXGA TFT colour display and the quality was really ok. Its just my opinion.
Bye and have a lot of fun with your new toy ;)

  • I want to replace the 40GB HDD on Satellite M50-130

I want to replace the hard-disk, since it is becoming unreliable but cannot fnd the specs.
Can anyone help with the exact specs please?
Is the drive IDE or SATA?
    Size = 2.5 inch?
I believe the original size is 40gb, can I replace with any size?
Is the removal and replacement easy? Are there any instructions please?
I have a horrid feeling that there may be recovery data for the operating system on a hidden partition in the drive.
Is that correct? Can that be transferred to a new hard-disk?
    Many thanks,
    Nick

The Satellite M50-130 was delivered with the 2.5" 60GB HDD.
This HDD supports a rotation speed of 5400rpm and it supports an enhanced IDE (ATA 6) interface.
So you need an IDE HDD, and not SATA

  • Satellite M50-130 won't run - BSOD appears

This M50-130 apparently won't let you run it unless it's on the lowest power setting imaginable. At first I thought it was windows, reinstalled, even tried linux, same lockups.
The lockups were either instant reboots or random messages on BSODs. With the lowest power setting it keeps getting on.
The most peculiar thing is that it is not even heat related since I left it off and even without a batter or anything connected for hours and even then got the symptoms. The only way to keep it working is to leave it on the lowest cpu setting imaginable on the power thingimagy on the taskbar and leave it there.
I was using it on a medium-setting for a day and worked but then it hanged again on a game.
I thought at a point it's the ram, nope, checked it and the only error I could get was not on the memory check but a total system hang/reboot.
Then I thought it was the omega drivers, I replaced them with the default toshiba drivers, still the same. Of course, I'm afraid those driver updates may have had a damaging lasting effect but anyway.
The behavior of the lockups/random messages on BSODs seem to be quite random but it seems to stabilize when I just boot windows and leave it on a lower power setting I've made ('1' cpu constant, power consumption optimal, or '2'')
This has no warranty and I really need a laptop NOW so you understand I'm left with two options: either fix it fast any way I can or just buy a new laptop.

    Hello Lela
Your troubleshooting is really impressive and all you tried is right but you must ask yourself is there really something else you can try? I do not think so. If the problem persists after clean OS installation (recovery image) then there must be some serious problem. I can not say for sure what the problem can be but technicians from authorized service provider.
Make a call and let them check the notebook. Maybe they will be able to fix this FAST.
Sorry but I really do not see any other option for you.
At the end I can just say: compare the repair price with prices of some new notebooks and I believe you will make right decision what to do.

  • Few questions about Satellite A300D-14P functionality

I have model Satellite A300D-14P for one month. Warranty 2 yrs. I have few questions, and asking for help, and suggestions what I should do?
*My camera quality * is VERY poor, Only with very much light on, I can get generally ok picture quality. Indoor, beside turned on both options, night mode or backlight compensation I hardly can see my face, very dark and poor quality. Second problem is blue led light, it is annoying because half of picture is always blue, somehow that light taking half picture which is always blue:((( I used notebook model from L300 series ( cheaper than mine) with same camera and that blue light, it is working perfectly :(
*Battery life and start up Vista OS*? ??In power save mode hardly 1.5h ??? Just surfing and nothing else....I asked Toshiba support here in Serbia about that and they told me that it is normal, and measuring of battery life (2, ...h) by specifications, is when my display is off and computer don't do anything ??? They also told me that normal start up time for Vista OS is around 1.45min maybe more???
If I install win XP is it possible to get battery life longer?
Do I need to go in Toshiba service or what?
Thank you very much and sorry if I am boring :))))
    Nikola

    Hay Nikola
You are not boring at all and welcome on this forum.
    I don't know where to start. ;).
I have Satellite A300-1LI in front of me and I use it about a month now. Start-up time is very interesting theme and with right configuration you can optimise it and make it much shorter as with factory setting. Please read one very interesting thread about it under http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947
Do the same with your Satellite and I hope you will be satisfied.
Battery running time? I must say that information about two hours is realistic and I can confirm it. The same on my Satellite. But to be honest for mobile computing it is OK. I have changed several notebooks and just business notebook Tecra has had linger battery running time. What you can do is to check Toshiba support site and pick up info about more powerful battery. I am not sure but you can use Battery Pack (Li-Ion, 9 Cell, 6000mAh).
About cam I cannot say much. On my Satellite it works OK and I am satisfied. OK the quality is not the same like on good external webcams but for integrated cam it is OK.
If you are not satisfied try to talk with nearest service or try to compare it with some other Satellite by your local dealer.
So Nikola, if you have more questions please post again.

  • I've got some questions about Satellite Pro L300

1.) How could I Update my Bios? I find the zip- File but no further Information how it works?
2.) I want to update for more memory. 2GB are less for fast working. Where could I find Informations about the memory controller- e.g. Voltage, Timings... for pass new memory of 4GB.
3.) My PSSD1E shows me in Windows7 - Systems Hardware one empty SATA- Controller.
Is it possible to take it optional for an outgoing connection- eg SATA-OUT for extrenal device?
    Sorry for my worst english.

Satellite Pro L300 is offered with several different hardware configurations. I dont know which one do you have and there is no sense to discuss about this without exact notebook info.
If you want to have general conversation here than dont claim about this forum.
To get some precise answers inform us about exact notebook model.
    One more time:
    1
For all new notebook models Toshiba offers Win update only. That means BIOS update can be done under running operating system. For more details check Toshiba document.
    2
What you need is just part number of compatible RAM modules. All other information is not so relevant for you. If you want to get this info post exact notebook model.
You can test what you want but fact is that Toshiba offers list of compatible RAMs you can use with your notebook. All listed RAMs are tested. Other way you can visit KINGSTON page to check their list of compatible models for different Toshiba notebook models. Kingston offers high quality products and all listed RAMs are tested too.
Who knows which RAMs you have used for your tests? Maybe some cheap no-name products. Many people have used such RAMs and at the end nothing worked.
    3
Why you complicate the whole situation? For external devices you have available ports. For internal device you have ports on the motherboard. End of the story.
And yes, visit your local dealer ant talk with him, especially about question number 3.

  • A question about Satellite P755-S5391 and SSD SATA 3

Hello everybody, I'm new and I need help about this...

    I have a P755-12F with [Intel HM65 Express Chipset|http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/value-chipsets/mobile-chipset-hm65.html].
It's written "Serial ATA (SATA) 6 Gb/s and 3 Gb/s", so this should meen that it supports Sata III (6 gb/s).
I think that you have the same chipset

  • Corrupting photos on my Satellite M50

    Hi,
I have a Satellite M50-130 and have just started having a problem with photo files.
They have started to corrupt and the preview comes up with the words 'drawing failed' or 'no preview available'.
I can still see the thumbnail picture but the info for the file, ie the size and what camera was used is gone.
I'm not sure why this is happening and it doesn't appear to have stopped. I have opened old folders with photos in and found that one or two have corrupted.
It could have been from using ad-aware I guess. I did a system restore to another time but this didn't fix the problem.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks

    Hello James
Please do not be mad on me but I do not see any connection between described issue and Toshiba as notebook manufacturer.
In my opinion corrupting photos has something to do how you use your notebook and the whole stuff you have preinstalled on it. The fact is that under well running operating system you will be able to open all jpeg and bmp files (if not damaged).
Which kind of photos you have (jpeg or something else)? Have you tried to open this files on some other PC?

  • Re: Question about the Satellite P300-18Z

    Hello everyone,
I have a couple of questions about the Satellite P300-18Z.
What "video out" does this laptop have? (DVI, s-video or d-sub)
Can I link the laptop up to a LCD-TV and watch movies on a resolution of 1080p? (full-HD)
What is the warranty on this laptop?

    Hello
According the notebook specification Satellite P300-18Z has follow interfaces:
DVI - No DVI port available
HDMI - HDMI-out (HDMI out port available)
Headphone Jack - External Headphone Jack (Stereo) available
.link - iLink (Firewire) port available
Line in Jack - No Line in Jack port available
Line out Jack - No Line Out Jack available
Microphone Jack - External Micrphone Jack
    TV-out - port available (S-Video port)
VGA - VGA (External monitor port RGB port)
Also you can connect it to your LCD TV using HDMI cable.
Warranty is country specific and clarifies this with your local dealer but I know that all Toshiba products have 1 year standard warranty and also 1 year international warranty. you can of course expand it.

  • Some question about Toshiab reocvery disk for Satellite P300-133

    Hello guys ,
I got some questions about unpleasant recovery surprises :
*1)* I just made recovery DVD using Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator and it initially asked for 2 DVDs - but when the first one was done it didn`t require a second blanc DVD . Is it possible all system files of Windows Vista to be written on 1 DVD ?
*2)* Could I reinstall Windows Vista using the HDD Recovery option ( by pressing F8 ) without using recovery DVD ?
*3)* Which HDD partitions`ll be formatted ( just system C: or both C: and E: ) using HDD recovery ?
*4)* What is recovery DVD - Image of the hard drives or Vista installation files ?
Its pretty bad idea not to include OS on DVD when I have paid for it.
Thanks for all the problems to Toshiba :(

    1. I think the recovery disk creator means 2 CDs. I have a Portege M700 with Windows Vista and one DVD too. I recovered it and after this I have a clean Vista installation with all drivers and tools from Toshiba. Nothing is missing.
    2. Yes, you can reinstall Vista using the HDD Recovery option when you press F8 at startup. You dont need the recovery DVD but you should create one when your HDD get some errors or something else. If you need a new Recovery DVD, you have pay for one.
    3. The complete HDD and partitions will be formatted, so backup your data first on a DVD, external HDD, USB stick or something else.
After the reinstallation you have the factory settings.
    4. The recovery DVD is an image of the HDD about the factory settings. If you make a recovery, there are all drivers and tools already installed. Of course on the disk are the installations files of Vista, but you can only use this DVD on your Satellite P300. The disk can not be used on an other Satellite or on a PC.
When you have more questions, have a look in the user manual. There are a many in formations about the recovery. Its in chapter 3.

  • Satellite U405D - Several questions about overheat/disassembly/upgrade etc.

    Hi there,
I have several questions about my one year old Satellite U405D-S2910
1- When it works, after 2-3 hours (I usually run small programs like safari, msn messenger and bsplayer) CPU gets 85-90 C (178-188 F). When I play Age of Empires 2 (Come on, its an ancient game) like 2-3 hours it shuts down itself. What could be the possible reason?? By the way, let me inform you about the climate of the town I live, temp 30C - humidity 25-35% (nowadays).
    ps. Cpu= AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor. Model, RM-74
2- I'm going to disassemble my laptop in order to clean its cooling units (I think reason of overheating is this). It doesnt seem like a desktop, so complicated. Ive seen a step-by-step disassembly(btw, its so hard to spell disassembly:) I think Im going to do this. What are your suggestions about it? any experiences could help me?
3- My laptops Ram memory consists of 2X2GB PC5300 DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM, I want to replace it to 2x2GB MACH XTREME DDR2 1333MHZ CL9 NOTEBOOK RAM. Should I do it? Does it fit my laptop, work stable? any suggestions?
    ps. mainboard chipset AMD M780V
4- finally :) , Should I use 64 bit OS or 32 bit OS (win7)? what OS would you use if you were me?
    Thank you.

    Hi buddy,
1+2. I think everything is related to a higher internal temperature and you should clean your notebook using compressed air spray. Therefore its not necessary to disassemble it, just blow gently and shortly the air through the notebook. You can buy such compressed air spray from every computer store I think and it takes only 5 minutes.
You can find an useful article about this here:
    3. In my opinion you should forget this update! The RAM speed is related to FSB of CPU and as far as I know on Satellite U405D its 667MHz so its already the fastest RAM that you can have. Save your money and buy a bigger HDD or in best case an SSD that can really improve the performance!
    4. In my opinion the answer is clear: Windows 7 64bit.
    Only a 64bit OS support full 4GB RAM. ;)

  • Few questions about difference between Satellite P70 , L70, S70

Hello, i have many questions about the series P70 , L70, S70 that come with a 1920x1080 panel.
    1) What are the differences between the L70 and S70 series? Except of the HDD capacity and RAM, the notebooks look pretty identical.
    2) Do P70 , L70, S70 support a 2nd HDD or is it just the P70 series that support it ?
    3) Do all three (P70, L70, S70 series) come with the same TFT Panels ?
    4) Which of the above series supports mSata ?
    5) Do all of the model of each series come with a mSata support? E.g. Could it be that L70-a-13m supports mSata while the L70-a-146 does not ?
    6) All of the above, come with a S-ATA II or S-ATA III interface ?
    7) Which is the best of those series listed ? I am trying to understand what makes the big difference from S70 to P70 except of the casing for example.
    Thank you in advance.

    >1) What are the differences between the L70 and S70 series? Except of the HDD capacity and RAM, the notebooks look pretty identical.
What Sat L70 and S70 models do you mean exactly? There are different L70-xxx and S70-xxx models on the market which supports different hardware specifications.
    >2) Do P70 , L70, S70 support a 2nd HDD or is it just the P70 series that support it?
As you can see in this [Sat P70 HDD replacement document,|http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/CRU3903II0000R01.htm] the P70 series supports 2nd HDD bay BUT even if there is an 2nd HDD bay this does not mean that you could use 2nd HDD. In case the 2nd HDD bay would be equipped with HDD connector, you could use the 2nd HDD
I found also the [Sat L70/S70 HDD replacement |http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/CRU3703HG0000R01.htm] document on Toshiba page and there I can see that 2nd HDD bay is not available
    > 3) Do all three (P70, L70, S70 series) come with the same TFT Panels?
See point 1). Different P70, L70, S70 models were equipped with different hardware parts.
    > 4) Which of the above series supports mSata?
As far as I know only some P70 models are equipped with an 256GB mSATA-SSD.
    > 5) Do all of the model of each series come with a mSata support? E.g. Could it be that L70-a-13m supports mSata while the L70-a-146 does not ?
See point 4) not all models supports the same hardware specifications
    > 6) All of the above, come with a S-ATA II or S-ATA III interface ?
I dont think that SATA III is supported. I guess it would be SATA II
    > 7) Which is the best of those series listed ? I am trying to understand what makes the big difference from S70 to P70 except of the casing for example.
Not easy to answer because there are too many models released in Europea.
And not all models are available in each country. So I guess you will need to look for models which were released in your country.

  • Questions about Indexing and Using an Indexing POA

Although I have only about 50 users, at least 15 of them have in excess of 100,000 messages in their accounts and the POA (version 7.0.2) is regularly slowing to a crawl. (I just know that plans for revolution are fomenting!) I have embarked on a campaign to reduce these accounts by archiving everything off to get mail accounts down to 3000 or fewer pieces. I have achieved user buy-in, but have worked on only a few users so far.
In another closely related thread, it was suggested to me that the PO speed issues relate to broken indexes. And I suspect that given so many messages, the indexes were never getting fully rebuilt with the default QF POA settings. I am trying to fix that situation in addition to reducing mail account sizes. So, I have set up a second POA on another server and dedicated it to the indexing task. The /qfinterval is set for 1 hour, other /qf switches at default. The POA-QF does no mail delivery, but it does do nightly user upkeep.
The POA-QF seems to be steadily working away and making progress at reducing the number of unindexed messages. However, I have questions about what I am seeing and what more I can do:
    1. Is the progress I am seeing real progress? For example I have a user with over 100,000 messages to be indexed and every time I check the logs, the count drops by about 500 messages per hourly QF cycle. I assume that if I just let it keep running, it will eventually get caught up and fixed. Not only with this user, but with all the others as well. Will my patience (and theirs) be rewarded? Are there any gotchas I need to prepare for?
    2. One user has recently had virtually all of her messages successfully moved to archive. I can see them in the Archive, and do not see them in the online account. However, now over a week later, QF still shows >130,000 items still left to index for that user. The POA-QF is making slow, steady progress reducing that number, but why is this user's QF count still so high? Does it just need more time, or is there something amiss for this user?
    3. I may want to rebuild indexes for single users from scratch. I have seen the TID 3105742 which tells how to do this: Essentially you turn off mail delivery functions, and make some other switch changes to dedicate the POA to indexing for just a single user, and then you let the POA rebuild the indexes. The implication of that scenario is that the POA is now enjoying exclusive access to the user's databases.
If I want to use my secondary POA-QF to rebuild a user's index from scratch, does the main POA have to be offline and the user out of GWise? That is, Does the QF process require exclusive access in order to rebuild indexes from scratch?
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

Set this switch for this indexing POA - /qflevel=999 - this will index
everything in one run. It will take a long time, but with no qflevel switch you
are indeed only indexing 500 messages at a time, and if the user has that much
mail, it might never really catch up.

This is odd, because really the index count should drop to nothing, but with the
above switch this might get resolved as well.

Not really - the POA is not enjoying exclusive access to the user's database,
the indexer is just avoiding an attempt to index anything else.

No - QF never requires exclusive access. That said, you may find that an
extremely vigorous QF can cause slowdowns for the user.
