  • Question about Video Cards on Laptops

     Hi everyone, and sorry if I post this in the wrong area. I own a few computers, some are consider ancient and others are somewhat old but can run Windows XP just fine. I have a question about the computers in the stores today.
    I am looking to invest in a new laptop, possibly a desktop in the near future depending on my budget. The question I have about video cards today is that, I enjoy a good MMO game now and then, I don't expect to play heavy intensive games, just maybe some more advance games. I notice that for one game that I want to play, it requires a video card to have (Shadow Rendering, Vertex and Pixle Shaders). Do the computers today have those as standard for thier video card? Or do I have to invest in a little bit more expensive laptop/desktop. I am willing to invest money for some more RAM, if I need to improve its preformance. The reason I ask is because I have a 4 year old Laptop with a broken keyboard, and I was thinking about just replacing the laptop with a newer one. it has some pretty good specs and runs everything fine, but it can not play certain games because of those missing video requirements. (Current laptop incase someone is curious: 1.5Ghz Celeron M, 1GB memory 64MB video (Shared) ) Thanks to anyone who has the answer to this question. (P.S sorry if everything is scrunched together. for some reason the formatting is wierd on Opera web browser

    Graphics cards have all those standard today... or at least they should unless you get a really cheap Graphics card. The kind of graphics card and processor and other specs of the computer you want to get should depend on what you want to do with it. It also depends on the kind of games you want to play. If you're playing FPS [first person shooter] then you need a really good graphics card and processor. If you're playing something like Diablo 2 or something that's on the lower end of graphics then you just need decent specs. Graphics cards, I suggest something with aGeForce Nividia card... as of today, they are in the 9 series for high-end cards I believe. For processors... get something like Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 or T9600 or the Core 2 Quatros or Extremes. Extremes are intended for hardcore gaming and would be more expensive. For RAM you should have at least 2GB... you can always upgrade that later.
    For laptops my suggestions are:
    $3k+ get a customized alienware
    $2-3 get a customized dell xps, or macbook pro [although if you're gaming i would suggest you dual boot with windows xp or vista]
    $1-2k get a cheaper customized dell, or sony vaio
    under $1k... well I don't know what to say... you can't really get a nice gaming computer for under that price.
    I personally DO NOT like HP computers at all because they are so quirky and have so many problems and break down easily.

  • Questions about Monthly Connect Subscription

    Adobe's offices are closed for a few more days, so I thought I'd try here and see if anyone has some answers to these questions. I'm planning on purchasing a monthly subscription.
    How long can the recordings be?
    How long will I have access to recorded meetings if I decide to discontinue my subscription?
    Thanks for your time, folks.

    I'm not sure about how long the recordings can be, but I did one tonight that was an hour 33 minutes.
    Caution about the monthly subscription.  You have a cap of 5 people if you go monthly.  To get the "up to 100 people" and all you might think you'd be getting, you'll need to get a yearly subscription ($500) and you will have to go through a sales rep.  Personally, I think it's kind of misleading.  It's still a good deal and it works well, but the advertising they put out there makes it sound different than it really is.
    How long do you have access to them if you discontinue?  I'm not sure, but you can do an offline version of it that basically downloads the flv file to your hard drive so you could keep it forever.
    Hope that helps.

  • Questions about video studio

    Hi.  Not an Abobe question per se, but I'm going to be setting up a video studio / green screen room  and thought some Abode users might be able to point me to an appropriate place to ask some questions about how this should be built.  (Planning a 16' x 16', room, but could be up to 16' x 20' if necessary, standard 8' ceilings (no way around that).
    Would like to film a weekly show in the studio with anywhere from 1-3 people sitting at a greenscreen desk; would also use the room to record singing and piano.
    Will be processing with Adobe master Suite CS6 (and Sonar X2 for music in conjunction with Audition).
    I've done some greenscreen work with a consumer grade digital camcorder and hardboard painted green, Keying with After Effects and using Premiere as nonlinear editor.  But I'd like to set up something more professional now, while trying to keep the budget under control.  Perfectly fine with DIY softboxes and screens as long as they work well.
    Have questions about lighting, cameras, preferred room dimensions, and any othter factors I should consider when having this built (and needs to accomodate the recording of piano and vocals as well).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Thanks Steven.
    I've been worried about the 16' being a little too tight - so will go with the 20' (even bigger might be better, but that's the most I can really do).
    A few other questions:
    1) I thought I was going to be limited to 8' ceilings, but depending how things lay, it might not be a big deal to put in 9' ceilings.  Would that help significantly with the lighting or is it not a big deal.
    2) Should I have electrician install lighting on the ceiling to illuminate the greenscreen (back wall) from above or to shine down on the talent from above and behind for backlighting - or should I just do all the lighting with standing softbox lamps?
    3) I've read that sound in a rectangular studio can be a big problem.  One recommendation was to hang black curtains on tracks that could cover all areas not in the shot - this would reduce bouncing of light and spill over from greenscreen, while also minimizing standing waves / echo.  Any advice on this or other economical things to consider as room is being built?
    4) I have a HV20 Canon consumer grade HDV camcorder - it has an HDMI port.  Anyone have experience with Blackmagic Intensity Pro - which should let you capture uncompressed raw video from the camera?
    5) Any one have advice on the Sony HVR-V1U MiniDV Camcorder  - can get used for under $1000 - would this be a giant step up and make green screening / keying much easier (using Adobe Premiere and After Effects CS6) - or not worth the money?
    6) Any advice on what to do for microphpones during a show where 2-3 people are seated at a rectangular table facing one camera and talking?  Will also record some electric piano and vocals.
    Thanks for any suggestions (including advice about any other forums where I should post my questions)

  • Newbie question about video quality in CS3

    I'm new to Premiere CS3. I've been using iMovie but wanted to move up to an app with more features and finer grained tuning. However, I'm having trouble getting my imported clips to maintain their quality. Don't know if I've got PrCS3 set up incorrectly or if I don't know enough about video formats.
    I'm running Premiere v3.2.0 (374) on a MacBook Pro, 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3GB memory, OSX 10.6.6
    Here's my scenario:
    I have a video clip with the following specs: .mov, 720 x 480, H.264, 30fps, bitrate 244 (see screen shot below). It was captured from my computer using Snapz Pro X.
    I imported the clip into PrCS3 and was surprised the clip preview and composite preview were displayed at less quality than the original (even made sure the quality mode was set to "highest"). The video clip was squeezed a bit and the clean edges of my vector art were jagged. The entire thing seemed out of focus.
    I thought the exported video might be better quality. I exported the sequence using the following settings:
    But the results were no better (I've actually gotten better results using iMovie HD). Below is the final exported movie.
    Any help from the PrCS3 community would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Justin
    Providence, RI

    Hi,
    capturing from your computer would give you square pixel aspect ratio....and you're using an aspect ratio for SD TV ( ntsc ), so it is stretching ....no longer a perfect "circle" in the paw print...
    Your project setting should be made in custom / desktop ( dont use a preset )...and set it for 720x480 square pixels progressive ( no interleaving ), 29.97 fps...  the codec choice for rendering when you set up the project could be dealt with later on if this solves your basic problem..
    your export would then be the same as your project setting....720x480, progressive, square pixels, 29.97 or 30 fps ...should be good.
    one note: h264 is already "compressed" quite a bit....its a "delivery" format...for viewing ...not really meant to be edited...know what I mean ?  So you will lose some quality due to that stuff already being compressed...
    but your pixel aspect ratio being "fixed" with the above should improve what you see quite a bit.
    good luck

  • Question about Video file si

    Hey, I just had a quick question. I just bought a Zen V Plus today and love it so far except for one thing... The video file size.
    I have a bunch of videos on my computer that I have saved of YouTube and had previously converted into regular .avi format, so I could watch them on my computer.
    So I have been looking for an economical alternati've to the iPod, so the V seemed like the right choice for me... But I used media explorer that came with it and encountered a pretty large problem.
    The file size for each of the TV shows that I had saved were fairly small saved on my computer, averaging about 66mb. So I tried to put them on my Zen, but the file was incompatible... Not a huge problem, or so I thought, but when the explorer converted it it nearly tripled in file size, some even going over 200mb. I don't see what's going on, is there any way to make the file sizes smaller? Because as of now, I can only fit about 3 episodes of my shows and a few songs on it, while my brother, who has an iRi'ver Clix, can fit 0- shows and a ton of music.
    Any help would be gladly appreciated.

    Unfortunatly the Zen V PLus was not really designed primarily as a video player, as such it just doesn't have the capabilities to handle compressed video.
    The video playing was designed as something extra that it can do, but doesn't seemed to have been designed for the video heavy user.
    I have tried many different formats but it doesn't appear that you can make the video any smaller, as the devices can't handle compressed video. (My daughter has a a Zen V Plus, I stick music videos on it for her and it works well for that.
    I have a Zen Vision M, as I like watching full length shows.)?If you are into watching videos I would recommend getting one of the players (such as the Zen Vision M) that is designed more around storing and displaying video.

  • IMovie - quick questions about video files when importing and optimizing

    Hi, have some quick questions. I think they are simple.
    1. When I import a video (from say iPhoto), where does it get "Move" or "Copy" to?
    2. Why would I want to do "Copy" instead of "Move", because isn't it then taking up more space?
    3. I'm wondering if after I optimize a video, I can stash away the original (non-optimized video that I either "Move"d or "Copy"d earlier) into an external hd.
    4. By the way, what is the new file name of the optimized video?
    Though things are working fine in iMovie and iPhoto, I'm trying to manage hard disk space, and hope answers to these questions will help.
    Do you guys have a guideline on how to manage hard disk space when it comes to iphoto and imovie?
    Thanks.

    As has been suggested you can encourage people to download QuickTime player by doing something like this...
    http://www.mirroroftheuniverse.com/Songs.html
    You can also present your songs like this...
    http://roddymckay.com/Satellite/JukeBox.html
    This is a SnoCap jukebox and you need an account to use it but you'll get the link to ESnips on the above page.
    A 3 minute song has a file size of about 30 Mb in AIFF format. Converting it to MP3 reduces it to about 3.5 Mb and M4A to about 5.5 Mb.
    iTunes will do these conversions for you and M4A is far superior to MP3 as far as sound quality is concerned.

  • Management needs to address this question about Creative Cloud subscriptions

    Hopefully there is a satisfactory solution for this question.  Then and only then will I feel comfortable giving Creative Cloud a try.  I own Production Premium CS5.5 and Design Premium CS6. In addition I have stand alones of Photoshop CS5.1, Premiere Pro CS6, Acrobat Pro 9, Lightroom 4 (2 copies) and probably another package I'm not thinking about right now.  If I convert to Creative Cloud and two years from now when CS7 or possible CS8 is the current version and I decide end my subscription to Creative Cloud reverting back to the disk version ownership, I will be required to pay additional money because I didn't keep my disk ownership current.  I used to upgrade my Production Premium Suite every other version.  I owned CS4 in that suite and when CS5.5 was released, I was required to pay an additional $250 (if memory is correct) because I hadn't upgraded to Version CS5.  I think that subscribing to Creative Cloud should not open me up to my license being devalued because I chose the subscription (at essentially the same price for what I use) over buying the disk.  Adobe, will you comment on this situation and add it to management discussions to assure faithful customers we won't have our current licenses put into jeopardy?

    akrafter wrote:
    I like the idea of Creative Cloud but subscribing to it for a mandatory 1-year is binding.
    Thare are two joining options: monthly (higher monthly fee) or 12 month contract, billed monthly(lower monthly fee)

    And after the one year, do you go on a month-to-month or do you have to sign on for another year?  I'm sure that's in the fine print someplace but I haven't noticed it.
    Auto-renewed unless you cancel.
    http://www.adobe.com/au/products/creativecloud/faq.html
    At the end of my annual membership, what do I need to do to renew it?
    If you would like to renew your annual membership for another year, you do not need to do anything. Your account is set to auto-renew so that you will not experience any interruption in access to your Creative Cloud products and services.
    How do I cancel my one-year membership?
    To cancel a one-year membership, you can either go online to the Account page on www.creativecloud.com or contact Adobe Customer Service. If you cancel your membership before meeting the 12-month commitment date, you will be charged 50% of the remaining amount left on your contract.
    akrafter wrote:
    I hope a lot more people ask the question and do as I'm doing, not buy into Creative Cloud until a satisfactory solution is arrived at.  I like the looks of the CC package and I think it has value but not at the loss of value for my Creative Suite.
    Not sure you'll get a definitive answer to that before CS7 arrives.
    And you'll need a CS6 perpetual license in order to upgrade to CS7.
    So I suspect a CS6 purchasing/upgrading decision (Cloud or traditional upgrade) will have to be made based on the info currently available.

  • OK: simple question about video out

    My new mac mini should arrive today. I'm taking it one step at a time but planning down the road as I hope to hook it to my TV for Netflix streaming, Hulu, etc. I've ordered the S-Video adapter so I'll be good there.
    My question: I know that to drive a second monitor (not mirrored) that a third party, usually USB solution is needed. But what if I just want to mirror out to my TV what is shown on the monitor? Will a DVI splitter do the job?

    A splitter will generally not work - or at least that well - because it means the mini will receive two separate signals from the displays indicating conflicting possible settings. It would only then work at resolutions which are common to both displays - typically 640x480 and 800x600.
    What complicates it more in your case is that since you want to drive the TV with the DVI-to-S-Video adapter, if you were to add a splitter before that cable, it would eradicate the S-video component since that is catered for by the adapter alone. And clearly you can't add a splitter after the adapter.
    There is no real, easy way to add dual display use to a mini, but the recently released USB adapter and the Matrox dual-head-to-go are probably the most viable. Even then, in as far as the former, the USB display will be relatively slow, and in the latter, you will be limited to what amounts to two 1024x768 screens - in effect, your TV and a 15" LCD. It is also not clear whether the Matrox unit passes the S-video component of the mini's output, meaning that if it does not, it can also not be used if a TV is being connected by composite or S-video.

  • A question about videos.

    Hi,
    I am about to start a project where we will be using a number of videos.  These are going to shot using a studio and I can specify any format that I'd like for the final output.  Can any of you recommend the most trouble free format as well as codec or anything else I might need to know?
    Many thanks as usual for all of your help!

    Hi there
    Captivate basically only likes to use the Flash Video FLV format for video.

  • Question about video recording and size of the recording on a tv/comp

    So i just started editing my iphone movies with imovie for mac. However I ran into a problem right away. When i recorded a video while holding my iphone vertically the playback was horrible on my mac because it was so skinny and not wide at all. First off I was wondering if there was a some way to make it wider? My videos that were recorded while my iphone was horizontal then they are perfect when viewing on my mac. So if anyone can help me with this question i would greatly appreciate it.

    You cannot record a video any wider when recording a video in portrait mode or make it wider after being recorded. If recording a video in landscape mode is what you prefer, you need to record all videos in landscape mode.

  • Question about method calling (Java 1.5.0_05)

    Imagine for example the javax.swing.border.Border hierarchy.
    I'm writing a BorderEditor for some gui builder, so I need a function that takes a Border instance and returns the Java code. Here is my first try:
    1 protected String getJavaInitializationString() {
    2     Border border = (Border)getValue();
    3     if (border == null)
    4         return "null";
    5
    6     return getCode(border);
    7 }
    8
    9 private String getCode(BevelBorder border) {...}
    10 private String getCode(EmptyBorder border) {...}
    11 private String getCode(EtchedBorder border) {...}
    12 private String getCode(LineBorder border) {...}
    13
    14 private String getCode(Border border) {
    15     throw new IllegalArgumentException("Unknown border class " + border.getClass());
    16 }This piece of code fails. Because no matter of what class is border in line 6, this call always ends in String getCode(Border border).
    So I replaced line 6 with:
    6     return getCode(border.getClass().cast(border));But with the same result. So, I try with the asSubClass() method:
    6     return getCode(Border.class.asSubClass(border.getClass()).cast(border));And the same result again! Then i try putting a concrete instance of some border, say BevelBorder:
    6     return getCode(BevelBorder.class.cast(border));Guess what! It worked! But this is like:
    6     return getCode((BevelBorder)border);And I don't want that! I want dynamic cast and correct method calling.
    After all tests, I give up and put the old trusty and nasty if..else if... else chain.
    Too bad! I'm doing some thing wrong?
    Thank in advance
    Quique.-
    PS: Sorry about my english! it's not very good! Escribo mejor en espaol!

    Hi, your spanish is quite good!
    getCode(...) returns the Java code for the given border.
    So getCode(BevelBorder border) returns a Java string that is something like this "new BevelBorder()".
    I want Java to resolve the method to call.
    For example: A1, A2 and A3, extends A.
    public void m(A1 a) {...}
    public void m(A2 a) {...}
    public void m(A3 a) {...}
    public void m(A a) {...}
    public void p() {
        A a = (A)getValue();
        // At this point 'a' could be instance of A1, A2 or A3.
        m(a); // I want this method call, to call the right method.
    }This did not work. So, i've used instead of m(a):
        m(a.getClass().cast(a));Didn't work either. Then:
        m(A.class.asSubClass(a.getClass()).cast(a));No luck! But:
        m(A1.class.cast(a)); // idem m((A1)a);Woks for A1!
    I don't know why m(A1.class.cast(a)) works and m(a.getClass().cast(a)) doesn't!
    thanks for replying!
    Quique
