Questions about which codec to use

At my new job, there is a server full of RAW video files that I will need to use in the future. These were all imported with an iMac through iMovie and are in .mov format with ICOD codec. I have found that PCs can't read ICOD codec, and there is no way around that. I just discovered Compressor on this iMac and was thinking that I could change the codec into something a PC can read.
What codec would be the best choice for me? This is all high definition video, and I would like to retain the quality of the originals. File size doesn't matter.

I believe that ICOD is just another descriptor for Apple Intermediate Codec. That's obviously proprietary to APple and is sort of obsolete – used in FCE, for HD material. (I didn't realize it was still used by iMovie.)
Pro Res is a better codec for editing and is virtually lossless. If the PC folks have (or download) the Pro Res QT
Decoder they could play it. But PR files are very, very large.
If you edit these files into something finished in whatever NLE you want to work in, you could always export as AIC and convert in Compressor. I imagine the PC would be perfectly happy playing an h.264 MP4. It should look good and the file sizes will be much more reasonable.
Try a short test to verify.
Good luck.

  • How can I determine which codec to use?

I'm using PE7 on a PC. I have HD video shot with a Canon. Each video - there are six of them - is less than five minutes. After I finished editing, I uploaded them to youtube and emailed a link to my client, but my client complained that they were out of focus. I explained that it was the compression that youtube uses, and that I'd render them to disk for him to look at.
Trouble is, I can't figure out which codec to use. All I know is that I want clear, sharp video, suitable for posting on the net. These are scientific videos, showing some chemical processes involving gasoline with ethanol and water.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    TIA

I guess I need to explain better. The HD videos I'm editing will not end up on youtube, but will be posted on a government agency's website. I originally posted them on youtube just so the client could take a look without me having to attempt to email large video files or burn to disk, since the client is in a different location from me.
The area of video editing and production that I'm the least knowledgeable - and therefore the most insecure - is when I attempt to render and save a video. Every video project I go through the same frustration of having a project that I'm happy with, but having a final product that either 1) does not look at all sharp or 2) results in a file size which is too large. In this case, since the final video files will be posted online, they need to be small enough for viewing over the net while maintaining enough sharpeness and quality that the video does not look out of focus.
If you take a look at this video, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_X0IKPJrng you can see why my client thought it was out of focus. However, I know that the original footage is very sharp. This link is only temporary, as I've already been told that the agency I work for will not allow them to be posted on youtube.
So, my question is, when I'm rendering and saving a video project from PE7, how do I know what settings to use for the highest quality, yet smallest file size? The manual does not go into much detail about the pros and cons of various codecs, nor does it say much about what settings do what. It's like Adobe expects me to already know this information.
Is the problem with the video above simply that youtube compresses the videos I upload? Is Vimeo a better site to upload videos and maintain sharpness? In PE7, is there a way to set it up to upload to Vimeo, or should I render and save as an MP2 or MP4 file and then manually upload?
Surely there's a site which goes into much greater details about the various settings I can use in PE, and how those settings affect the final viewing product.
Thanks a lot for your help. I realize my questions show an extreme lack of experience, but that's why I'm here, right?

  • My question is which better to use every time my iPad until the battery is 0% then charge it to 100% then use it again until it is 0% or i use it until the percentage is low then charge it until it is 70 - 80 %  then use it but not let it charge to 100%

My question is which better to use every time my iPad until the battery is 0% then charge it to 100% then use it again until it is 0% or i use it until the percentage is low then charge it until it is 70 - 80 % percentage then use it but not let it charge until it is 100% to reduce the number of circles and increase the life of battery as i read that it must at least one time a month use the device until the battery drain to 0% then charge it again to 100% but i don't understand is it must be one, two, three times a month or properly most of the times  to reduce the the number of circles and increase the life of the battery?

    wuzradioman,
I was originally on your side in the discussion of batteries, however, after being contradicted by Meg St._Clair and others I took a leap of faith and took their advice with my Apple devices.  Much to my chagrin their advice has proven true.
Long story short I have not noticed any differences in my battery life by changing my charging habits to what is convienant over what is more in line with conventional battery myths.

  • Workflow question - which codec to use?

Starting a project and want to get a quick check before I possibly do something really dumb:
    • Shooting on Canon t2i, importing footage off cards via Image Capture
    • Taking the resulting .mov (h264) and converting it in compressor to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)
    • Edit AIC files in Final Cut Pro 6
    • Once editing complete, make all clips Offline and reconnect original H264 files
    • Render out Final project to self-contained file
    • Final color correction in Color
I'm a bit rusty in the video production arena and this is my first project shooting on a t2i. I am a bit unsure about the codec situation and finishing editing with the smallest amount of transcoding. I tested a few codecs and I found AIC to be the fastest and easiest to edit with minimal file size, but I have never used it before. Should I just convert the footage to ProRes and be done with it? I'm expecting a high shooting ratio on this project, so I would like to utilize an offline workflow if possible without crating a bunch of headaches down the road, though with drive prices what they are now, it's not a big deal anymore. I'm really just want to edit as quick as possible (minial rendering utilizing RT) while maintianing good quality (I know the client will be worried if I presented them a 50% quality Jpeg version of the current edit).

Thanks Mr. Ross and Mishmumken for the advice, will definetly do the ProRes route. A few final questions though:
    1. I watched the tutorial link a few times which was helpful, but am still fuzzy as to why I need to ingest via FCP. Is there anything wrong with importing from Image Capture and using Compressor to get the footage into ProRes? I see the positives about it, logging the clips, trimming the fat, having it all in the program, avoiding compressor, but does my original method cause any degradation?
    2. Can you elaborate a bit, not sure what you mean by Roundtrip and what do I need to prep?
    mishmumken wrote:
Just roundtrip your timeline but make sure you prep it before sending to Color: there are limitations ....
Thanks again guys, you have been extremely helpful and probibly saved me a lot of future problems!

Hi There, someone seems to have gotten into my personal information somehow and I'm trying to figure out to what extent.
I have changed passwords on everything from iTunes and email accounts and I was just going through online accounts. I was resetting my password on Acklands grander and I was posed with a question:
    "For Which Account"
    - [email protected]
    - Madness
The myemail account is my account. What is this message about "Madness"?
The browser I was using is Firefox and I certainly have never used that name in any way.
Is this a hidden account on my computer, firefox, or the Acklands Granger Website?
I could find no other evidence of this acccount anywhere I looked apart from that message.
    Help!

  • Bluetooth: A2DP. Which codec is used in iOS4.3

    Hi,
does anybody know, which codec is supported for BT A2DP streaming?
    SBC (default)

Then again, this is from the JBL press release :
The JBL OnBeat Xtreme iPad dock supports advanced A2DP and AVRCP Bluetooth profiles for interference-free operation, and uses the higher-quality AAC codec – supported by Apple’s iOS devices, gaming consoles from Sony and Nintendo as well as Android smartphones – for superior audio streaming.

  • Satellite 2410: Question about different ways to use BlueTooth

    Hi,
I'm having trouble finding somewhere to purchase a bluetooth module for my Toshiba Satellite 2410 - the handbook says I can, and I know there is space on the underside of the laptop to insert it.
I just can't seem to find one to buy - does anybody know if they actually exist, as I am beginning to think not??!...or is the cheapest way to bluetooth enable the laptop to buy a USB adaptor?
If so, will a cheap one affect the download rate when using the Internet?? And what is the difference between an SD card and a USB bluetooth adaptor?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, with the detailed name I mean the full notebook number Satellite 2410-xxx.
However, you ask what a difference between Wireless Lan and Bluetooth.
The WLan is technology which allows you using or/and to create a LAN but without the cables.
;) The Wlan routers for example allow you to connect to the internet without the cable connection.
    Bluetooth technology:
If device like (mobile phones, printer, etc) support BT technology and you notebook uses also a BT so it's possible to connect these devices without cables. The devices should be placed in the available range.
I would recommend searching a little bit in the internet for more information about Wlan and Bluetooth

  • Find which codec is used?

How can I tell which codec is being used for sound in an avi file.  I have problems playing some avi's in VLC.  The sound is crackly.  Other files are fine so I figure there is some encoding difference I wanted to track down before I reported a bug.  Totem plays the files fine.

    btw...
theres a command in linux that can be used to get info from any file, its called file
    file /media/Files/Download/movie.avi
    /media/Files/Download/movie.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 640 x 272, 25.00 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)
as for your other problem, could it be a problem in the video instead of vlc?

  • Maybe a dumb question, about which power connectors to use, but....

This may sound like an incredibly dumb question, but here goes anyway....
I upgraded my system a few weeks ago, and will be slapping in a new ATI X850 Pro AGP card in a few days.  My current graphics card is a p.o.s. Radeon 9550, so it doesn't have its own power connector or even a fan.  My PSU is a dual-rail Antec model, and I'm wondering if it should matter any about how many or which devices I have connected to each power cable set.  My psu came with cables to attach, only 2 of the 4 though are the 4-pin molex - the other 2 are pci-e power connectors I believe.  Should it make a difference which or how many devices I connect to each cable?  For ease of plugging in, I believe my DVDRW and CDRom are using 1 cable, and my ide drive and floppy are using the other cable. Also, I have a pci fan and a case fan running off 1 or the other.  I'm likely to jump the power cable for the video card off the one the hard drive is using, unless someone has some suggestion to offer to the contrary.
If it makes a difference, can anyone recommend how they would have them connect?
My list of devices to plug in would be:
    1)IDE HDD
    2)Floppy
    3)CDRom
    4)DVDRW
    5)Case Fan
    6)PCI Fan
    7)Video Card
Thanks for any thoughts!  SAB - you seem to be the man on builds.....any ideas?

Well, I put the new card in and connected it on a cable with the optical drives.  Also, I had unwittingly connected my cdrom on the same ide channel as my hdd    , so I changed that so both optical drives are on the secondary ide.
So far, so good.  3dMark03 jumped up from 3300 with an overclocked Radeon 9550 to 10570 with the stock Radeon 850 Pro
I wish I could find some local source to purchase additional molex cords for my Antec SmartPower 2.0 psu, though - I've got 2 more 'outlets' just sitting there on the psu doing nothing, because the other cables are for pci-e, and I'm not using pci-e......  If I could buy some additional molex cables to plug in like the ones that came with it, I could have the vid card on its own cable....

  • Question on which forum to use

I have a Jakarta POI (for createing XLS files) question. Anyone know which forum is best for asking this type of question?
    Thanks

I figured I would ask before someone jumped down my
throat about posting a question in the wrong forum : )Well done, I sometimes quite unintentionally employ the tactic of hoisting by my own petard; it works well for me. :)
Anyway, my question relates to Jakarta POI, although
I am open to other solutions. I am using this API to
create XLS files. Now, I have been asked to find a
way to password protect the files as I create them.
It does not appear that this API has this
functionality. I'm pretty sure this is the case.
If so, does anyone know of a way to password
protect these files programmatically.I'm afraid that I can't help you there, but there is a dedicated POI forum here:

  • Question about file size when using "Export for Web"

    Hi!
I created a .mov file and worked to get a great balance between file size and quality so that I could deliver it via the web and make it easier for end users to see the video on a slower connection.
My question: When I use "Export for Web," my .mov file is converted into a very large .m4v file--more than double the size of the original file. I know that this export option is to optimize the file for a wide variety of users/internet speeds. Am I correct in guessing that the end size is not an issue? I would post the .mov file instead, but I really like the option of embedding into a html page along with the "click to play" option.
Bottom line--is it better to post the smaller .mov file that i originally started with or to go ahead and link to the bigger .m4v file that was created with the "Export for Web" option?

"Export for Web" is a feature of QuickTime Pro and it makes 4 files and the html page code for easy copy/paste Web page editing.
The very first file is called a "reference movie" and it links to the other 3 files (56kbps, 900kbps and 1.5Mbps). It, and the page code, "read" the connection speed of the viewing hardware and "serve up" the correct file based on that connection speed.
In nearly all cases the "Desktop" version would still be smaller in file size than the original source. The times the file would "increase" in file size would be when an already compressed was used as the source file. You can find out more about your source file by opening it in QuickTime Player and viewing the Movie Inspector window information.
There are dozens of other html "tricks" that could be used if your source file is already compressed but you want a different display size:
Page code to show "aspect" or scale="tofit". This code allows values "outside" of those found in the actual QuickTime file be used for the Web page display. A 320X240 QuickTime .mov file looks pretty good at double size (640X480) but the file size would still be that of the source file.
"Poster Movie" is another html trick that loads the Web based file directly in the QuickTime Player application (bypassing Web page layout restrictions). These files are also known as "Presentation Movies".
Another method is the QuickTime Media Link file (.qtl). These are simple text based files that are used as a "direct link". These use simple XML (Extensible Markup Language) and are easily created in any text editing application. The simple syntax has amazing control over a simple QuickTime .mov file. You can launch (and quit) the QuickTime Player, display at other dimensions and even embed "links" inside the display.
Some of my files as examples:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/Lemon_Trees/ a "Poster Movie" style.
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.qtl
A QuickTime Media Link file. A tiny file should download to the viewing machine, launch QuickTime Player, present the movie and it even includes a "link" to my Web page.
Edit: It appears you must now double click the .qtl download to launch QuickTime.

  • E-recruimtment: Question about landscape standalone with use of MSS view

    Hi ,
Has anyone already done an implementation of E-recruitment with the use of MSS view ?
Or have you reliable information about the combination landscape - manager view ?
For security reasons the choice for the landscape standalone is the best.
But in documentation of SAP we have read that the Manager view isn't possible in a standalone landscape:
ERP installation (Recruiting as integral part of the ERP solution)
    - Required for MSS Manager Role integration and ESS integration
    Kind Regards
    Pascale

    Hello Pascale,
perhaps we mixed up some things according to the manager involvment. There are 2 different solutions.
There is the "internal" e-recruiting solution for manager involvement. This is delivered in 2 separate roles requester and decision maker but usually joined to one manager or hiring department view / startpage.
There is an bsp application for requesting requisitions. The manager can create them, fill in the data he knows and then he sends it to his hr clerk respondible for his requests who adds all stuff missing, checks if it's ok with budget / headcount and then publishes it in the jobborads. In Addition there is an application which provides the mangager with a list of candidates he has to check and fill a questionaire for e.g. to decide if he wants the candate for an interview.
Both applications are parts of the e-recruiting delivery. They have nothing to do with the MSS. They are accessed via a startpage for the amnager and run on the e-recruiting server.
On the other hand there is nearly the same functionality delivered as part of the MSS. The result is nearly the same just the user interface differs. The requisition request is not done in an bsp application but an Adobe Interactive Form (which requires an ADS Server). The intention of this is to rebuild you old paper requisition request in an interactive form and map the data to the e-recruiting requisition. So you train your managers to use a web version of the old form instad of using e-recruiting. Of course if you already use other mss functions everything will be in the same fancy frontend and you do not need to log in twice if you have no SSO. As far as I heard the ADS license alone costs 50k and then youhave the rollout cost and licence cost for the MSS. You have to decide if it is worth it.
The candidate list for questionairs to fill is also available in the MSS scenario.
The MSS solution requires e-recruiting 600 and an hr core system on ECC6.0 (ERP2005) with the newest enhancement package. The MSS is installed and processed on the hr core server no matter if you use an integrated or a standalone installation for e-recruiting.
    Best Regards

  • Question about efficiency, should i use hashmap?

    Hi all
i read a csv file and store each line's data into a class MyData.
this class contains a variable of id - unique for object.
i want to store all my MyData object in a collection for later use.
if i want to access them in the fastest way, should i store my objects in a hashmap, and the key value would be their id?
    like -
    HashMap hashmap = new HashMap();
    MyClass mc1 = new MyClass(1); //id =1
    MyClass mc2 = new MyClass(4); //id =4
    //i add the objects
    hashmap.put(mc1.getID(),mc1);
    hashmap,put(mc2.getID(),mc2);
//then when i want to get a certain object, where id is 4:
MyClass mc = hashmap.get(4);should i use other collection? or is it fine that way?
    Thanks!

don't worry about microoptimisations like selecting a collection class based on how fast it is unless and until you have written evidence that the class you had initially chosen was the sole reason for unacceptably poor performance (which will hardly ever matter, the only time I've ever encountered that was with an ancient web application making extensive use of Vector, where switching to ArrayList made it an order of magnitude faster).Hmmm... I do diagree with that statement, but then again I'm an old f@rt... I cut my teeth on the gory gizzards of all manor of data-structures, and I still believe that selection of the "correct" data structure(s) is a core implementation issue... especially where efficiency is (even occasionally) desirable.
I haven't seen the same big gains when replacing Vector with ArrayList... in fact, I've only seen a very marginal (<10%) increase in "overall" throughput... I have seen a couple of orders of magnitude (or thereabouts) increase when I swapped a Vector<Integer> for an int[], but that was in the inner-loop of an inherently n^2 (I think) spatial algorithm.... and I also made it reuse the int[], instead of creating, growing and throwing away the vector every time through the outer loop. Malloc is expensive ;-)
I'd be interested to hear more details about under the conditions under which ArrayList is 10 times faster than Vector, because I do a lot of work on a 1.3/1.4 era codebase, which is full of Vectors and HashTables... and I would like to be able to make a case for an en mass replacement (and generifying) of the "old school" datastructures... but alas, I see very little bang for our buck, so I just bite my toungue and continue using Vectors, even in new code, because so many existing "helpers" take a (explicitly) Vector parameter.
I heard a "rumor" somewhere (probably a thread here) that there's talk of discontinueing support for non-generic collections in 1.7, because they (the API/VM developers) are having to (sort of) maintain two divergent versions of every collection related thing... and nothing annoys a developer more than that, right... so Please can anyone confirm or repudiate this "rumour".
    Cheers. Keith.

  • Uploading movies / which codec to use?

I want to upload various clips to a .mac site. iWeb says that they should be under 10Mb which seems pretty tiny to me and I would rather not compromise on quality too much if I can help it. Using FCP what is the best codec / QT version to use to publish movies?
Plus... ideally I'd like them all on the same page - is using a photo page the best way to do this? Otherwise it seems to take an age to watch anything.
Lastly, does it make a difference whether the files are on my desktop or on my idisk? Does the latter improve the streaming speed that people can watch movies on iWeb?
If anyone can shed light on the above it would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

Publish for Web (.m4v) is a good idea.
does it make a difference whether the files are on my desktop or on my idisk? Does the latter improve the streaming speed that people can watch movies on iWeb?
Yes it does. Local files load extremely fast. Which is rather useless, since no-one has access to the files.
Files on a server are dependent on the connection speed of the visitor.
As far as I know iWeb only suggest to use smaller files. Can't recall that iWeb prevents uploading larger files.
These pages contain movies from 19-23 MB:
    http://web.mac.com/wyodor/CorinneBaileyRae/
If iWeb does prevent large files, upload a small one and replace it with a larger one on the server.
Or use the HTML Snippet to embed movies.
    http://web.mac.com/wyodor/iFrame
    http://web.mac.com/wyodor/Ajax
    Lots of options.

  • Which codec to use for editing AND motion graphics (ala Final Cut Studio)?

I have a prosumer-level AVCHD camcorder (Panasonic HDC-TM700) and am working with Final Cut Studio. After doing a great deal of research it appears that there is NO real benefit to using any codec other than ProRes 422 for straight editing (a camera at this price point doesn't shoot images of a high enough quality to warrant using 422 HQ, which also requires more processor power, and not only does 4444 require rendering it also takes up a ton of space). However, I have read (many times) that there may be some benefit to using 422 HQ if I am doing motion graphics work (ala Motion 4). Can anyone verify this? Would it make any discernible difference when shooting with a camera like this? Even though it is a prosumer camcorder I am trying to squeeze as much value as I can out of the entire production.
    Any input or advice?
    Thanks!
